• All of ESX4 hosts not responding after rebooting vCenter server

  Hello I'm constructing 5ESX+a vCenter serv. I'm testing FT on the system. Today vCenter OS (W2008) demanded system reboot. After rebooting vCenter Serv. All of ESX hosts have alert icon. end indicate "not responding" I tried to connect ESX (version 4) hosts to vCenter again. Once they came back normally, but after few seconds ,They turned red again. All of them have ping connection to vCenter serv. There are no red messages in Tusks and events. Two messages are found in Summary of Cluster ·There aren't sufficient resource for HA failover. ·Can't contact primary HA agent. I'm also not able to reset FT configuration because all of VMS aren't accessed from vCenter What should I do?

• Oracle Database 11g upgrade egy érdekes hozadéka

  A napokban olvastam egy érdekes 11g upgrade hatást Tom Kyte blogjában. Mivel mostanában sok hazai ügyfél tervez 11g upgrade-et, úgy gondoltam beszámolok én is errol, hátha valakinek hasznos lehet, bár szerintem viszonylag kevesen futnak majd bele ebbe a problémába. Az érdekes jelenséget az Oracle Database 11g Release 2 verzióban bevezetett deferred segment creation okozza. Ez egy alapértelmezetten bekapcsolt képesség, ami arra való, hogy egy új tábla készítésekor az adatbázis-kezelo automatikusan nem foglal tárterületet, azaz nincs initial extent allokáció. Ennek az újításnak a célja az, hogy alkalmazások telepítésekor a létrejövo számtalan táblának ne legyen lefoglalva a tároló terület, amíg azokba nem kerül adat. Ez azért hasznos, mert sok dobozos alkalmazás számos olyan táblát létrehoz, amihez aztán végül nem is nyúl az adott környezetben (pl. nem használt alkalmazás funkció miatt). Összességében tehát sok feleslegesen lefoglalt diszk területet spórolhatunk ezzel, azonban ha egy táblatérre nincs kvótánk, akkor az eddig tapasztalt muködéssel szemben létre tudunk hozni táblákat, hiszen nem foglalunk le vele területet. Viszont az elso insert muveletnél kapunk egy "ORA-01950: no privileges on tablespace 'USERS'" hibát, ami nem volt megszokott insert muveletek esetén korábban. Hogy ez most bug, vagy feature, azt döntse el mindenki maga :-) Ha valakinek nem tetszik így, akkor persze kikapcsolhatja a deferred segment creation képességet akár az init/spfile szintjén, akár session szintjén ("alter session set deferred_segment_creation = false;"), de lehet a tábla létrehozásakor is szabályozni: "create table t ( x int ) segment creation immediate;"

• Cross-platform distributed fault-tolerant (disconnected operation/local cache) filesystem

  We are facing a design "challenge" where we are required to set up a storage solution with the following properties: What we need HA a scalable storage backend offline/disconnected operation on the client to account for network outages cross-platform access client-side access from certainly Windows (probably XP upwards), possibly Linux backend integrates with AD/LDAP (permission management (user/group management, ...)) should work reasonably well over slow WAN-links Another problem is that we don't really know all possible use cases here, if people need to be able to have concurrent access to shared files or if they will only be accessing their own files, so a possible solution needs to account for concurrent access and how conflict management would look in this case from a user's point of view. This two years old blog posts sums up the impression that I have been getting during the last couple of days of research, that there are lots of current übercool projects implementing (non-Windows) clustered petabyte-capable blob-storage solutions but that there is none that supports disconnected operation nicely and natively, but I am hoping that we have missed an obvious solution. What we have tried OpenAFS We figured that we want a distributed network filesystem with a local cache and tested OpenAFS (which, as the only currently "stable" DFS supporting disconnected operation, seemed the way to go) for a week but there are several problems with it: it's a real pain to set up there are no official RHEL/CentOS packages the package of the current stable version 1.6.5.1 from elrepo randomly kernel panics on fresh installs, this is an absolute no-go Windows support (including the required Kerberos packages) is mystical. The current client for the 1.6 branch does not run on Windows 8, the current client for the 1.7 does but it just randomly crashes. After that experience we didn't even bother testing on XP and Windows 7. Suffice to say, we couldn't get it working and the whole setup has been so unstable and complicated to setup that it's just not an option for production. Samba + Unison Since OpenAFS was a complete disaster and no other DFS seems to support disconnected operation we went for a simpler idea that would sync files against a Samba server using Unison. This has the following advantages: Samba integrates with ADs; it's a pain but can be done. Samba solves the problem of remotely accessing the storage from Windows but introduces another SPOF and does not address the actual storage problem. We could probably stick any clustered FS underneath Samba, but that means we need a HA Samba setup on top of that to maintain HA which probably adds a lot of additional complexity. I vaguely remember trying to implement redundancy with Samba before and I could not silently failover between servers. Even when online, you are working with local files which will result in more conflicts than would be necessary if a local cache were only touched when disconnected It's not automatic. We cannot expect users to manually sync their files using the (functional, but not-so-pretty) GTK GUI on a regular basis. I attempted to semi-automate the process using the Windows task scheduler, but you cannot really do it in a satisfactory way. On top of that, the way Unison works makes syncing against Samba a costly operation, so I am afraid that it just doesn't scale very well or even at all. Samba + "Offline Files" After that we became a little desparate and gave Windows "offline files" a chance. We figured that having something that is inbuilt into the OS would reduce administrative efforts, helps blaming someone else when it's not working properly and should just work since people have been using this for years. Right? Wrong. We really wanted it to work, but it just doesn't. 30 minutes of copying files around and unplugging network cables/disabling network interfaces left us with (silent! there is only a tiny notification in Windows explorer in the statusbar, which doesn't even open Sync Center if you click on it!) undeletable files on the server (!) and conflicts that should not even be conflicts. In the end, we had one successful sync of a tiny text file, everything else just exploded horribly. Beyond that, there are other problems: Microsoft admits that "offline files" in Windows XP cannot cope with "large files" and therefore does not cache/sync them at all which would mean those files become unavailable if the connection drop In Windows 7 the feature is only available in the Professional/Ultimate/Enterprise editions. Summary Unless there is another fault-tolerant DFS that supports Windows natively I assume that stacking a HA Samba cluster on top of something like GlusterFS/Lustre/whatnot is the only option, but I hope that I am wrong here. How do other companies allow fault-tolerant network access to redundant storage in a heterogeneous environment with Windows?

• Setting up an Active-Active IIS Cluster with ARR - is it possible?

  I would like to know if we can setup an Active-Active IIS Cluster using Windows Cluster services that shares a common storage to store web content and WITHOUT the use of Windows NLB. I'm aware that this may not be a best practice or not a recommended setup, however, the setup is to be configured as below: Two web servers running IIS 7.5 (needs a common storage for web content) for HA and another set of two servers for sql cluster in active-passive mode for HA. Also is it possible to enable ARR on 2 node active-active IIS cluster for load balancing http requests? Appreciate if someone replies with both pros & cons of the setup.

  Il 26 Giugno scorso presso l’Aula Magna della Fondazione CUOA si è tentuo il workshop “L’evoluzione dei modelli e dei sistemi di analisi e reporting direzionale”, promosso dal Club Finance CUOA con la collaborazione di Oracle .  Una recente analisi di Gartner ha evidenziato che Executives Finance ed IT hanno identificato Business Intelligence, Analytics e Performance Management come tema prioritario su cui concentrare gli investimenti “tecnologici” nel 2013 confermando, se mai qualcuno ne avesse avuto bisogno, la continua e crescente attenzione delle aziende alla propria capacità di definire, produrre e gestire informazioni funzionali all’identificazione di opportunità, alla valutazione di rischi ed impatti, alla simulazione degli effetti di operazioni ordinarie e straordinarie...in un solo concetto, informazioni funzionali alla guida dell’azienda. Questo dato è ancora più interessante se incrociato con il risultato di una survey condotta da CFO Magazine e KPMG International nella quale il 48% dei CFO intervistati ha dichiarato di ritenere i propri sistemi datati ed poco flessibili, quindi un limite, se non proprio un freno, alla loro volontà di essere agenti del cambiamento. A fronte di tutto questo, le aziende dimostrano un crescente interesse a capire cosa fare, oggi e domani, per migliorare la propria capacità di sfruttare una risorsa aziendale estremamente pregiata quale l’informazione. • Problems compiling with Quickly

  Welcome to another of my questions about compiling! :P So, after days of stress trying to compile my app, first manually, after porting the project to Quickly, I decided to create the project from scratch using this time Quickly. Now I've finished the app, it works great using quickly run and I haven't added any new file, just removed, replaced or modified. But it can't be compiled using quickly package --verbose --extras... why, if there doesn't seems to be errors related with my project? The fail happens because python-mkdebian doesn't haves enough parameters to work. Strategie per progettare un Servizio eccellente e profittevole." che ha visto il contributo del gruppo di ricerca CELS (Research Group on Industrial Engineering, Logistics and Service Operations) e della sezione ASAP SMF dell’Università degli Studi di Bergamo. Giuditta Pezzotta (PhD - Cels) e Roberto Pinto (PhD - Cels) ci hanno presentato la Service Engineering Methodology (SEEM), innovativa piattaforma metodologica che permette di ottimizzare la creazione di valore sia per il cliente finale sia per l’azienda, partendo dalla progettazione del prodotto e arrivando alla progettazione della soluzione prodotto-servizio, e valutando la bontà del prodotto-servizio ipotizzato attraverso strumenti concettuali e di simulazione dei processi. Armando Janigro, CX Strategy Director EMEA - Oracle ha invece parlato di Modern Customer Service, ovvero di come adattarsi in modo agile e veloce alle mutevoli necessità dei clienti, ipotizzando l’adozione in chiave strategica di nuovi strumenti di differenziazione e di leadership come la Customer Experience (CX) e sfruttando le nuove dinamiche di relazione azienda-singolo consumatore per ottimizzare l’esperienza multicanale e per render più efficiente il Customer Service, creando ulteriore valore. • Heartbeat won't start up from a cold boot when a failed node is present

  I currently have two ubuntu servers running Heartbeat and DRBD. Let's say one node is down... The servers are directory connected with a 1000Mbps cross over cable on eth1 and have access to a IP camera LAN on eth0 The node that is still functioning won't start up heartbeat and provide access to the drbd resource. I have to manually restart heartbeat by "sudo service heartbeat restart" to get everything up and running. How can I get it to start fine from a cold start?   Gyakran kapok kérdéseket az Oracle Enterprise Manager Grid Control licencelésével kapcsolatban, ezért az alábbiakban igyekszem összefoglalni a legfontosabb információkat. Az alábbi ismerteto nem teljes köru, mivel számos olyan termék van (Data Masking, Real Application Testing, Real User Experience Insight, Application Testing Suite), melyek kapcsolódnak az Enterprise Manager-hez, azonban licencelésük másképp muködik. Az Enterprise Manager licenceléssel kapcsolatban az elsodleges információ forrás a Licensing Information doksi. A legfontosabb információk: - A Grid Control keretrendszer (Agent-ek és a konzol az alapfunkciókkal - lásd késobb) önmagában ingyenes, sot restricted-use licencet tartalmaz Oracle Database-re, amennyiben azt csak az Oracle Management Repository céljára használják. • Setting up Cluster Configuration using an existing web server as a Primary Node?

  Thanks in advance for any help which is issued! I am having a slight issue, and need help with the decision making process when it comes to setting up my Cluster Configuration, consisting on a line of Ubuntu Servers (12.04). We currently have a Primary node, which resides in the US within a Datacenter, but we are going to be using this for all serious bandwidth and resource intensive websites, and through a configuration of Virtualmin + Webmin, will be setup as a sort of pseudo-cluster, using Virtualmins Cluster Modules. Anyways, on to the issue: We also have a business line setup locally, with three servers. here are their specs: Intel P4 2.4 ghz, 1GB Ram, 110 gb sata, Ubuntu 12.04* AMD 1.3 ghz, 512MB Ram, 20 GB IDE P3 Xeon 800mhz (dual physical processors), 1GB Ram, 3 * 25 GB Raid Configuration (one in use for host operating system). The first machine is currently IN USE and is serving virtual hosts off a sub-domain. My question is this: How can I integrate the Secondary node (which will be the Primary node per say, in this smaller configuration...) which is currently in use, into the cluster configuration w/ the other two servers for: Sharing Resources Redundancy (HA?) NFS /w the two Raid Disks without having the FORMAT the secondary node, and start fresh moving all my services in to a DRBD network drive or something similar, and than restoring all active virtualmin's Virtual hosts. the idea is that I want minimal downtime to people currently being served from server2.mywebsite.com, and from what I understand, all services need to be on a NFS so that they can be mounted on demand and accessed from the other machine taking over (i.e. Heartbeat + DRBD Config.) but my issue is that i already have all these services installed to their default directory structure: how can i most easily setup this NFS and HA system, move all my desires services to this new drive, and do it with minimal down time, and without breaking Virtualmin and everything else on my server? even just some pointers, a thread i could read, or a step by step check list or run down of commands i could issue to get started would be great! thanks!

  I liked the core of this question, and wanted to re-ask it in a way that made it less about 'fun' and more about 'What do these past mistakes tell us about how we can write and test software better?' As an SDET, I'm always looking for anecdotes about new and interesting ways that programs can fail. I've learned a lot from these tales in the past, and would like to get that from the intelligent people in this community as well. I'd be interested in hearing what the issue was, how it was caught, if you think there was anything that could have reasonably done to catch it earlier or to avoid the same issue on later projects, and any other interesting lessons you took away from this bug. Please only write about bugs you personally were involved with, ideally on a project you worked on (e.g., no "10 years before I was born, this happened and it was FUNNY!" answers). • ALPS touchpad stops working after reboot

  I recently upgraded to 12.04 LTS. My Compaq Presario CQ-40 324la touchpad worked after first restarting after installation. But after restarting a second time, the touchpad is completely disabled, without having changed anything in the system. I've tried solutions but haven't had good results. The applications I've installed (fro "solutions" are: Pointing Devices Synaptiks Dconf-Tools I've also tried updating GRUB, adding this line: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash i8042.nomux") I tried these commands in a terminal. Neither has worked. sudo modprobe -r psmouse sudo modprobe psmouse proto=imps El Touchpad ALPS se desactiva al reiniciar Recién he actualizado a Ubuntu 12.04LTS y a mi parecer ha mejorado mucho con respecto a 11.10... Pero ese no es mi punto ahora. El Touchpad funcionó correctamente luego del primer reinicio después de la instalación. Pero luego de volver a reiniciar, el Touchpad queda totalmente deshabilitado sin haber hecho cambio alguno en el sistema. He probado las soluciones en su mayoría y no he tenido buenos resultados. Las aplicaciones que he instalado (de las "soluciones") son: -Dispositivos apuntadores. -Synaptiks -DConf-Tools Y he intentado también actualizando el grub (añadiéndole una linea así: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash i8042.nomux") Intenté en la terminal con el comando: sudo modprobe -r psmouse sudo modprobe psmouse proto=imps Ninguno me ha resultado bien. • High Availability Clustering and Virtualization

  I'm trying to understand how the various virtualization vendors (specifically Amazon EC2, but also VMware and Xen) enable software vendors to provide a real HA solution in the environment where the servers are virtualized. Specifically, if I'm running any HA application (exchange, databases, etc) I need to ensure that my redundant virtual "servers" aren't located on the same physical server. Using in-house virtualization solutions (VMware, Xen, etc) I can provision accordingly as well as check the virtual - physical arrangement. I could, however, accidentally "vmotion" to the same physical hardware. With EC2, I don't even have the ability at provision time to select different physical servers. Since their Cluster Compute Instances are 1 virtual server per physical server it seems to be the only way to guarantee I don't have a false sense of redundancy. Any ideas or thoughts would be helpful. What are others doing about this problem? If the vendors provided an API where I could get something as simple as a unique physical system identifier I could at least know if I'm going to have an issue. -Tim

• SQL 2008 R2 Mirroring Issue

  Windows 2008 R2 with SQL 2008 R2 - Using Mirroring of a Database across the WAN in a HA setup with one witness. One issue I am having is during a failure (ever so often) the system fails over or tries, but leaves both databases in a Restoring State. My guess is the failover issue happens when there is a WAN bouncing and the systems get confused. The usual fix is to reboot the sql servers. Has anyone seen this type of failure? While this does not happen often it does causes an issue and concern with HA not being trusted fully.

• Will the VMs on the ESXi cluster be running after disconnection from the network?

  What will happen if I disconnect the ESXi cluster configured with HA from the switch(I need to change the power source on the main switch) and there is no management port redundancy? I'm going to disable the host monitoring and VM monitoring within HA settings, and connect to the switch after it boots up. Will the virtual machines be running if I disconnect the hosts from the network so they will not see any other ESXi host? I hope everything will work fine and the hosts will join the cluster after they connect to the network again, but I would like to be sure ..
