• Slow Starting DHCP Client Service - HP Thin Clients

  We have recently began adding XPe thin clients to our domain in preperation for a new citrix environment. One thing that has been picked up on in testing is that they appear slow to boot. The issue manifest's it's self as the classic "Applying Computer Settings..." screen we are all used to seeing. After digging into the issue it appears the DHCP Client service is taking some time to load on boot, this varies but I would estimate it can take around 1 minute in some cases. I've eliminated the classic issues, DHCP is responding correctly and in quick time. DNS is not the cause and GPO's are applying promptly. A simple workaround is to assign the client a static IP which work's great so the TCP/IP servies are obviously firing up quickly, just not DHCP Client. Does anyone have any idea's on how I may be able to improve the service start time? Keen to find a better solution before I get my arm twisted into setting up 250 thin clients with static addressing!

• How do I mount an Exchange mail store from the Windows Command Line?

  Our Exchange server is running Exchange Server 2003 Standard on the Windows Server 2003 platform. We're dealing with the mail store size issue, where if the mail store goes over the limit, it gets dismounted. While we are working with the powers-that-be on a policy that will prevent this happening in the future, I would like to see if it is possible to re-mount the mail store via the Windows CLI. I'm already monitoring the Event Logs and alerting on mail store warnings and dismounts - I'm just tired of getting up at 5am to manually re-mount the store while the political wars ensue. My alerting tools have the ability to execute a batch script when an alert is generated. I would greatly prefer a native CLI option. I'm not too keen on running some random vbscript found on the Internet and I don't really care to spend my time debugging someone else's code. PowerShell might be an option, if it can be triggered from the CLI.

• Upgrading from php 5.3 to php 5.4 with Macport

  PHP5.4 has been available for sometime now and Macport recently caught up with the release of port php54 but the process of upgrading is not as clear as possible. Even worst for those who are new to maintaining multiple versions of PHP on the same machine. I am keen on trying out some of the new features in PHP5.4 like traits, new array form etc but falling back on to php5.3 for other compatibility stuff. So i sudo port install php5+ (all the variants, apache2 etc) Then i tell it what PHP port to use as default sudo port select --set php php54 Check what version of PHP is active in the terminal using php -v outputs php 5.4.3. But i seem to be having issues with choosing the right non cli version as in the version of the module run by apache etc is still php5.3.12. Do i have to change the reference to the libphp5 in apache httpd.conf? Any advice on the right workflow for switching between php version on macport greatly appreciated!

  I'm paying for a VPS and hoping to launch my first website on it in the next few days. I'm worried there might be some glaringly obvious security holes in the standard setup, so I'm keen to get some tips About the only thing i know is turn off error reporting in PHP and create users/privilages for MySQL... any more stuff along those lines? I'm using: cpanel and WHM centos 5 php mysql google apps as mail server (so maybe i should disable built in mailer server somehow?!!) This is my first post of Server Fault (i use stack overflow alot), I hope i'm posting this in the right place, with the right tags - please feel free to edit if i'm wrong. Thanks guys!

• Mini-jack problem with Sony Vaio (running XP)

  I have a five year old Sony Vaio laptop (vgn-fw31m) that has had impact damage to the audio-output mini-jack for about the last year or so. In a recent discussion with my brother, we wondered whether it would be possible to write a program that would enable windows to use the microphone mini-jack input as the audio-output? As I currently use this laptop for work I am not keen to risk pulling it apart in order to replace the components comprising the audio-out. I therefore 'hope' that a programming solution exists. I would really appreciate any advice on this and eagerly await your response. Kind regards, qftme :)

• How to find malicious IPs?

  Cacti shows irregular and pretty steady high bandwidth to my server (40x the normal) so I guess the server is udnder some sort of DDoS attack. The incoming bandwidth has not paralyzed my server, but of course consuming the bandwidth and affects performance so I am keen to figure out the possible culprits IPs add them to my deny list or otherwise counter them. When I run: netstat -ntu | awk '{print $5}' | cut -d: -f1 | sort | uniq -c | sort -n I get a long list of IPs with up to 400 connections each. I checked the most numerous occurring IPs but they come from my CDN. So I am wondering what is the best way to help monitor the requests that each IP make in order to pinpoint the malicious ones. I am using Ubuntu server. Thanks

• How can I get Google to re-point its search entries to new domain?

  My main .com domain registration lapsed and when I went to re-register it, I found that a domain reseller service squatted it and I've lost access to it. As I wasn't terribly keen on spending money on funding scammers and the like, I registered a .co.uk domain under the same name. Is there any way of getting Google to re-point all its indexed links to the new domain? It's been indexing my blog for a couple years now and while it's not too big a deal, I'd like to not have to start all over again. Also, searching for my site results in an old entry which is currently pointing at a "Apply for a Tax Break NOW!!!" page.

• Hosting solution for sensitive client data

  Hello, We are developing a web application that will deal with highly sensitive (financial) data of clients (audience is medium to large sized businesses). Clients will be under scrutiny from regulators & auditors and, as such, we will be too. More importantly to give clients a level of comfort our application and related hosting arrangement should instill a lot of confidence with them. We are looking into using a cloud based service like Linode, Amazon EC2, etc. To allow for maximum flexibility We are keen on putting everything on virtual servers and avoiding having to buy our own hardware. Does a cloud based service make sense for our particular scenario? If not what type of hosting should we consider? If so what should we look out for? Thanks!

  In recent blog posts I have introduced the new SSIS Catalog that is forthcoming in SQL Server Code-named Denali: What's new in SSIS in Denali Introduction to SSIS Projects in Denali Parameters in SSIS In Denali SSIS Server, Catalogs, Environments and Environment Variables in SSIS in Denali The SSIS Catalog is responsible for executing SSIS packages and also for capturing the metadata from those executions. However, at the time of writing there is no mechanism provided to view analyse and drill into that metadata and that is the reason that I am, in this blog post, introducing a suite of SSIS Catalog reports called the SSIS Reporting Pack which you can download from my SkyDrive at http://cid-550f681dad532637.office.live.com/self.aspx/Public/SSIS%20Reporting%20Pack/SSISReportingPack%20v0.1.zip. • Podcasting vs Stack Overflow vs Geekswithblogs

  For a few years now I have been looking for effective ways to be involved in the “community”. While there are a few community programming events in my area (Johannesberg), there isn’t too much face to face stuff – which has caused me to turn to the internet. My internet attempts have been varied – at first I took the passive approach of listening to tech podcasts. This was great for a while, but soon the content became semi-repetitive and a little boring. It seemed that the podcasts I was listening to all went round the same themes and speakers and while I am still a keen listener to several tech podcasts – it didn’t quench my thirst. So I began to be a bit more active – starting with stack overflow – where I would scan the site for questions that were in the realm of my ability to answer. It worked for a while but soon it began to be discouraging – there seems to be so many people that know so much more than me and are quicker at typing that I felt fairly ineffective. So while I still use Stack Overflow when I am in a pickle and need some help – it feels more like me taking from the community than giving anything. Which brought me to Geeks with blogs. Till I found GWB I hadn’t felt like I was an active part of a community. I had blogged before on Blogspot and Wordpress but hadn’t felt associated to the community. Now when I get a comment from someone on one of my GWB posts either thanking me or adding a bit more or correcting me, it makes me feel like I am contributing to a community. So well done GWB. Thanks for making a spot that makes me feel at home!

• My Expert F# Book has now arrived!

  So it has finally arrived from Amazon. Expert F# by Don Syme, Adam Granicz & Antonio Cisternino. I got a note from the post office yesterday that I needed to collect a package from their offices. After paying a 10% customs fee (that I wasn’t expecting) I had my new Yellow & Black F# Book… it’s so shinny. Trust my luck though – I have a few university assignments due this week as well as a crazy week of work so it has been sitting on my desk for a day and I haven’t managed to get into it. Eventually I managed to take a few minutes this evening to page through it and it looks really good. I can’t wait! So my goal this week is to cover Chapter 2 (by the end of the weekend) and put the appropriate posts up. F# is slowly working on me but I am keen to get a deeper understanding of the language which I am hoping this book will help me achieve.

• The emergence of Atlassian's Bamboo (and a free SQL Source Control license offer!)

  The rise in demand for database continuous integration has forced me to skill-up in various new tools and technologies, particularly build servers. We have been using JetBrain's TeamCity here at Red Gate for a couple of years now, having replaced the ageing CruiseControl.NET, so it was a natural choice for us to use this for our database CI demos. Most of our early adopter customers have also transitioned away from CruiseControl, the majority to TeamCity and Microsoft's TeamBuild. However, more recently, for reasons we've yet to fully comprehend, we've observed a significant surge in the number of evaluators for Atlassian's Bamboo. I installed this a couple of weeks back to satisfy myself that it works seamlessly with Red Gate tools. As you would expect Bamboo's UI has the same clean feel found in any Atlassian tool (we use JIRA extensively here at Red Gate). In the coming weeks I will post a short step-by-step guide to setting up SQL Server continuous integration using the Red Gate command lines. To help us further optimize the integration between these tools I'd be very keen to hear from any Bamboo users who also use Red Gate tools who might be willing to participate in usability tests and other similar research in exchange for Amazon vouchers.   So I was tasked with looking at converting 10 million tracks from mp3 320k to AAC and also Converting from mp3 320k to mp3 128k After a bit of hunting around the tool you need to use is FFMPEG Download x64 WindowsAlso for the best results get the Nero AACEncoder Download Now the command line STEP 1(From Flac)ffmpeg -i input.flac -f wav - | neroAacEnc -ignorelength -q 0.5 -if - -of output.m4aor (From mp3)ffmpeg -i input.mp3 -f wav - | neroAacEnc -ignorelength -q 0.5 -if - -of output.m4aNow the output.m4a is a intermediate state that we now put a ACC wrapper on via FFMpeg STEP 2ffmpeg -i output.m4a -vn -acodec copy final.aacDone :) There are a couple of options with the FFMPEG library as in we can look at importing the librarys and manipulation the API for the direct result FFMPEG has this support. • ASUS EPC 1015CX won't boot with display after installing additional drivers

  I have a ASUS EPC 1015CX with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS installed using wubi alongside Windows 7. It worked perfectly after installing except that the supported screen resolution was only 800*600 instead of 1024*600. The specifications of the 1015CX device can be found here I tried installing additional drivers which was Broadcom for wireless and Cedarview-drm. By this time there was no display coming up after the boot. I could hear a voice and then the letters I typed got pronounced correctly. So, I guessed the issue has to be with the graphic terminal. I tried repair broken packages in the menu and booted and the display is now at 1024*600. But, if I restart normally the problem continues like before. As per what I found out after searching, I again opened additional drivers and installed Cedarview-graphics-driver. I tried restarting hoping it will work. But again, the result was same. There was no display but the system was working. I did more searching and followed the instructions found here. But still the result was same. I am keen to switch to linux from windows after hearing and learning great things about it. I know this community is good and always helping. I wanted to thank you all for the help in advance. Please let me know what I am doing wrong and help me to switch to linux from this same old windows.

• Mobility Card in Bangalore for Transportation

  Transport Minister R Ashoka announced Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) services are going to be best in the world soon. BMTC has planned to launch a Mobility Card with which commuters can get rides in BMTC, KSRTC and future Metro Train facilities without buying tickets for each ride. The conductor with have a simple device in which the commuters can swipe their cards to deduct the ticket tarrif for bus or metro rides automatically. This Mobility card can be obtained by paying a fixed amount. This method is time saving and the commuters can be saved from paying the exact change for tickets. Ashoka says the Volvo Vayu Vaira services have internet connectivity and voice announcements of every bus stop names and this has been appreciated by the commuters. With WiFi Connections in Shatabdi Trains soon and Mobility Cards, India is soon to match the services of US Standards. Government officials are keen in implementing these services before the end of this year. • Are copyright notices really required?

  Ever since I made my first web page 13 years ago I have followed the pattern of showing a copyright notice in the footer of each page. Over the years the format of this notice has changed in the following way; Copyright © <NAME> yyyy. All rights are reserved. Copyright © <NAME> yyyy © yyyy <NAME> © <NAME> This has generally mirrored the format used by Google. However, I recently noticed that they no longer display a copyright notice on their home page nor have one in their source code/meta tags. I see they still display it on most (if not all) other pages. I understand that Google are very keen to keep the word count down on their homepage, which could be the reason for this sacrafice, but my question is more general and relates to all websites. Since I've always just done it out of habit, I'm hoping someone can explain if/when I a copyright notice is actually required to protect your content and rights. Also, when it is required, is there a format in which the notice must adhere to in order to be valid?

  Last year I've got a MsC degree on CS. On the beginning of the MsC course, I was keen on moving on with research and go for a PhD. However, as the months passed, I started to feel the urge to write software that people would, well, actually use. The programming bug had bitten me, again. So, I decided that before deciding on getting a PhD degree, I would spend some time on the "real world", working as a software developer. Sadly, most companies here in Brazil are "services" companies that seem to be stuck on the 80s when it comes to software development. I have to fend off pushy managers, less-than-competent coworkers and outrageous software requirements (why does everyone seem to need a 50k Oracle license and a behemoth Websphere AS for their CRUD applications?) on a daily basis, and even though I still love software development, the situation is starting to touch a nerve. And, mind you, I'm already lucky for getting a job at a place that isn't a plain software sweatshop. Sure, there are better places around here or I could always try my luck abroad, but then I hit the proverbial brick wall: Sorry, you're too unexperienced as a developer and too under-qualified as a researcher I've already heard this, and variations of that, multiple times. Research position recruiters look for die-hard, publication-ridden, rockstar PhDs, while development position recruiters look for die-hard, experience-ridden, rockstar programmers. To most, my MsC degree seems like a minor bump on my CV (and an outright waste of time for some). Applying for abroad positions is even harder, since the employer would have to deal of the hassle of a VISA process, which I understand that, sometimes, is too much. Now I'm feeling I've reached a dead-end. I'm certain that development (and not research) is my thing, so should I just dismiss my MsC (or play it as a "trump card") and play the "big fish on a small pond" role while I gather some experience and contribute on some open-source projects as a plus? Is there a better way to handle this?

  I have several years of software development experience, but I am not a keen and adroit programmer, to perform better I need helping hands. Recently I engaged in an ERP project. For this project want a very effective structure, which will be easily maintainable and have no compromise about performance issue. Below structures are now present in my old projects. For my new project want to change my project structure, I want to follow below steps: Core Layer(common) BLL DAL Model UI Bellow picture describe how they are internally connected. Though goggling some initial type question’s are obscure to me, they are : For new project want to use Entity framework, is it a good idea? Will it increase my project performance? Will it more maintainable than previous structure? Entity Framework core disadvantages/benefits are? For my project need help to select best structure. Will my new structure be better than the old one?

• What to do when 'dpkg --configure -a' fails with too many errors?

  During an upgrade from lucid (10.04) to precise (12.04), the X session froze, and I have been trying to recover the upgrade to get a stable system. I have performed the following steps: Used ssh to log in to the stalled system over the network. Checked the contents of the /var/log/dist-upgrade directory. There was no activity on main.log, apt.log or term.log. top showed that process 'precise' was using about 3% CPU, but I could find no evidence that the upgrade process was still doing anything. 'dpkg' did not show up in top, but it came up with pgrep dpkg | xargs ps Killed the 'dpkg' and 'precise' processes Tried to recover the upgrade by running sudo fuser -vki /var/lib/dpkg/lock;sudo dpkg --configure -a. This was partially successful (some packages were configured), but failed with the message Processing was halted because there were too many errors. I ran the same command a few times, and each time some packages were configured but others failed. Tried running sudo apt-get -f install. It fails with similar errors to dpkg. The current situation is that dpkg --configure -a and sudo apt-get -f install fails with two kinds of error: Dependency issues, e.g.: dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of cifs-utils: cifs-utils depends on samba-common; however: Package samba-common is not configured yet. dpkg: error processing cifs-utils (--configure): dependency problems - leaving unconfigured Resource conflict, e.g.: debconf: DbDriver "config": /var/cache/debconf/config.dat is locked by another process: Resource temporarily unavailable Additionally, it seems there's reference to potential boot problems, so I'm not keen to reboot without fixing the install first: dpkg: too many errors, stopping Processing triggers for initramfs-tools ... update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-3.2.0-25-generic cryptsetup: WARNING: failed to detect canonical device of /dev/sda1 cryptsetup: WARNING: could not determine root device from /etc/fstab So my question is, how to get a working install when dpkg --configure -a fails?
