  • Free CodeRush Express: worth the time?

    - by rp
DevExpress has announced a free express version of CodeRush (for C# and VB.Net). http://blogs.microsoft.co.il/blogs/kim/archive/2008/10/28/coderush-for-free-coderush-xpress-for-visual-studio-announced.aspx I've read about CodeRush Pro and suspect that it is probably worth the money--but I've always had other things I needed to spend the money on. Is CodeRush Express worth the time and effort to download and learn to use. It's help file didn't install and I'm a little frustrated as to how to use it. Thanks, rp

  • Clojure editor/IDE recommendations on OS X

    - by Julien Chastang
I am starting to learn the Clojure programming language. Are there any recommendations for Clojure editors/IDEs on OS X? Update 2009-9-23: The clojure space has changed tremendously since I originally posted this question. Many of the links below, especially those that refer to clojure-mode with emacs, are out-of-date. The best clojure IDE I found was the enclojure Netbeans plugin which was recently released (2009-08-25). Update 2010-4-30: Here is another very good link on this subject by Lau B. Jensen. Also, for my own clojure development, I have actually moved to emacs / swank-clojure.

  • My control key doesn't work, how do I fix it??

    - by Blaine LaFreniere
My control key on the right doesn't work how it should. E.g. Right ctrl + T won't open new tabs in firefox, right ctrl + w won't switch windows in vim, etc. I know the key isn't physically broken, because xev shows that the right ctrl key generates events, but it just isn't responding as I expect it to in applications. Screenshot: http://i46.tinypic.com/33w1h76.png I tried Kim's answer but it still doesn't work. blaine@blaine-laptop ~ $ xmodmap -pke | grep 105 keycode 105 = Control_R Control_R Control_R Control_R Control_R Tried to map as Control_L as well, didn't work. The computer is a laptop, I am unable to plug the keyboard in to another computer.

  • What You Said: How Do You Sync Your Files Between Your Devices?

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
Earlier this week we asked you to share your tricks and techniques for keeping files synced between your different devices. Now we’re back to highlight how you do it. Overwhelmingly, you do it with Dropbox. Despite the proliferation of different platforms there has been little inroads made into any sort of universal syncing. We heard from quite a few different readers and by far the most popular option was to use Dropbox to ensure that you could get the music and documents you wanted whether you were on your desktop, laptop, netbook, iPhone, or Android device. In the same breath however, nearly all of your added on an additional service. The real message, it would seem, is that there simply isn’t a service good enough to meet all of the needs most users have, all of the time. The most common response to our Ask the Readers question was “Dropbox and…”; this pattern is illustrated nicely in the following quotes. Kim writes: Dropbox for all kinds of things. (Would also use Sugarsync, but it doesn’t support Linux.) Lastpass for passwords. Xmarks for bookmarks, although I’m going to try Firefox Sync soon. Evernote for things like shell commands I might want someday. Google Beta for music, once I get it uploaded. I have an Amazon account too, but Google gives you more space. Gmail. Michael finds himself in a similar situation and writes: How to Make and Install an Electric Outlet in a Cabinet or DeskHow To Recover After Your Email Password Is CompromisedHow to Clean Your Filthy Keyboard in the Dishwasher (Without Ruining it)

  • 24 Hours of PASS scheduling

    - by Rob Farley
I have a new appreciation for Tom LaRock (@sqlrockstar), who is doing a tremendous job leading the organising committee for the 24 Hours of PASS event (Twitter: #24hop). We’ve just been going through the list of speakers and their preferences for time slots, and hopefully we’ve kept everyone fairly happy. All the submitted sessions (59 of them) were put up for a vote, and over a thousand of you picking your favourites. The top 28 sessions as voted were all included (24 sessions plus 4 reserves), and duplicates (when a single presenter had two sessions in the top 28) were swapped out for others. For example, both sessions submitted by Cindy Gross were in the top 28. These swaps were chosen by the committee to get a good balance of topics. Amazingly, some big names missed out, and even the top ten included some surprises. T-SQL, Indexes and Reporting featured well in the top ten, and in the end, the mix between BI, Dev and DBA ended up quite nicely too. The ten most voted-for sessions were (in order): Jennifer McCown - T-SQL Code Sins: The Worst Things We Do to Code and Why Michelle Ufford - Index Internals for Mere Mortals Audrey Hammonds - T-SQL Awesomeness: 3 Ways to Write Cool SQL Cindy Gross - SQL Server Performance Tools Jes Borland - Reporting Services 201: the Next Level Isabel de la Barra - SQL Server Performance Karen Lopez - Five Physical Database Design Blunders and How to Avoid Them Julie Smith - Cool Tricks to Pull From Your SSIS Hat Kim Tessereau - Indexes and Execution Plans Jen Stirrup - Dashboards Design and Practice using SSRS I think you’ll all agree this is shaping up to be an excellent event.

  • The Freemium-Premium Puzzle

The more time I spend thinking about the value of information, the more I found that digitalizing information significantly changed the 'information markets', potentially in an irreversible manner. The graph at the bottom outlines my current view. The existing business models tend to be the same in the digital and analogue information world, i.e. revenue is derived from a combination of consumers' payments and advertisement. Even monetizing 'meta-information' such as search engines isn't new. Just think of the once popular 'Who'sWho'. What really changed is the price-value ratio. The curve is pushed down, closer to the axis. You pay less for the same, or often even get more for less. If you recall the capabilities I described in relevance of information you will see that there are many additional features available for digital content compared to analogue content. I think this is a good 'blue ocean strategy' by combining existing capabilities in a new way. (Kim W.C. & Mauborgne, R. (2005) Blue Ocean Strategies. Boston: Harvard Business School Publishing.). In addition the different channels of digital information distribution significantly change the value of information. I will touch on this in one of my next blogs. Right now, many information providers started to offer 'freemium' content through digital channels, hoping to get a premium for the 'full' content. No freemium seems to take them out of business, because they are apparently no longer visible in today's most relevant channels of information consumption. But, the more freemium is provided, the lower the premium gets; a truly puzzling situation. To make it worse, channel providers increasingly regard information as a value adding and differentiating activity. Maybe new types of exclusive, strategic alliances will solve the puzzle, introducing new types of 'gate-keepers', which - to me - somehow does not match the spirit of the WWW and the generation Y's perception of information consumption and exchange.

  • Testing Entity Framework applications, pt. 3: NDbUnit

    - by Thomas Weller
This is the third of a three part series that deals with the issue of faking test data in the context of a legacy app that was built with Microsoft's Entity Framework (EF) on top of an MS SQL Server database – a scenario that can be found very often. Please read the first part for a description of the sample application, a discussion of some general aspects of unit testing in a database context, and of some more specific aspects of the here discussed EF/MSSQL combination. Lately, I wondered how you would ‘mock’ the data layer of a legacy application, when this data layer is made up of an MS Entity Framework (EF) model in combination with a MS SQL Server database. Originally, this question came up in the context of how you could enable higher-level integration tests (automated UI tests, to be exact) for a legacy application that uses this EF/MSSQL combo as its data store mechanism – a not so uncommon scenario. The question sparked my interest, and I decided to dive into it somewhat deeper. What I've found out is, in short, that it's not very easy and straightforward to do it – but it can be done. The two strategies that are best suited to fit the bill involve using either the (commercial) Typemock Isolator tool or the (free) NDbUnit framework. The use of Typemock was discussed in the previous post, this post now will present the NDbUnit approach... NDbUnit is an Apache 2.0-licensed open-source project, and like so many other Nxxx tools and frameworks, it is basically a C#/.NET port of the corresponding Java version (DbUnit namely). In short, it helps you in flexibly managing the state of a database in that it lets you easily perform basic operations (like e.g. Insert, Delete, Refresh, DeleteAll)  against your database and, most notably, lets you feed it with data from external xml files. Let's have a look at how things can be done with the help of this framework. Preparing the test data Compared to Typemock, using NDbUnit implies a totally different approach to meet our testing needs.  So the here described testing scenario requires an instance of an SQL Server database in operation, and it also means that the Entity Framework model that sits on top of this database is completely unaffected. First things first: For its interactions with the database, NDbUnit relies on a .NET Dataset xsd file. See Step 1 of their Quick Start Guide for a description of how to create one. With this prerequisite in place then, the test fixture's setup code could look something like this: [TestFixture, TestsOn(typeof(PersonRepository))] [Metadata("NDbUnit Quickstart URL",           "http://code.google.com/p/ndbunit/wiki/QuickStartGuide")] [Description("Uses the NDbUnit library to provide test data to a local database.")] public class PersonRepositoryFixture {     #region Constants     private const string XmlSchema = @"..\..\TestData\School.xsd";     #endregion // Constants     #region Fields     private SchoolEntities _schoolContext;     private PersonRepository _personRepository;     private INDbUnitTest _database;     #endregion // Fields     #region Setup/TearDown     [FixtureSetUp]     public void FixtureSetUp()     {         var connectionString = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["School_Test"].ConnectionString;         _database = new SqlDbUnitTest(connectionString);         _database.ReadXmlSchema(XmlSchema);         var entityConnectionStringBuilder = new EntityConnectionStringBuilder         {             Metadata = "res://*/School.csdl|res://*/School.ssdl|res://*/School.msl",             Provider = "System.Data.SqlClient",             ProviderConnectionString = connectionString         };         _schoolContext = new SchoolEntities(entityConnectionStringBuilder.ConnectionString);         _personRepository = new PersonRepository(this._schoolContext);     }     [FixtureTearDown]     public void FixtureTearDown()     {         _database.PerformDbOperation(DbOperationFlag.DeleteAll);         _schoolContext.Dispose();     }     ...  As you can see, there is slightly more fixture setup code involved if your tests are using NDbUnit to provide the test data: Because we're dealing with a physical database instance here, we first need to pick up the test-specific connection string from the test assemblies' App.config, then initialize an NDbUnit helper object with this connection along with the provided xsd file, and also set up the SchoolEntities and the PersonRepository instances accordingly. The _database field (an instance of the INdUnitTest interface) will be our single access point to the underlying database: We use it to perform all the required operations against the data store. To have a flexible mechanism to easily insert data into the database, we can write a helper method like this: private void InsertTestData(params string[] dataFileNames) {     _database.PerformDbOperation(DbOperationFlag.DeleteAll);     if (dataFileNames == null)     {         return;     }     try     {         foreach (string fileName in dataFileNames)         {             if (!File.Exists(fileName))             {                 throw new FileNotFoundException(Path.GetFullPath(fileName));             }             _database.ReadXml(fileName);             _database.PerformDbOperation(DbOperationFlag.InsertIdentity);         }     }     catch     {         _database.PerformDbOperation(DbOperationFlag.DeleteAll);         throw;     } } This lets us easily insert test data from xml files, in any number and in a  controlled order (which is important because we eventually must fulfill referential constraints, or we must account for some other stuff that imposes a specific ordering on data insertion). Again, as with Typemock, I won't go into API details here. - Unfortunately, there isn't too much documentation for NDbUnit anyway, other than the already mentioned Quick Start Guide (and the source code itself, of course) - a not so uncommon problem with smaller Open Source Projects. Last not least, we need to provide the required test data in xml form. A snippet for data from the People table might look like this, for example: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <School xmlns="http://tempuri.org/School.xsd">   <Person>     <PersonID>1</PersonID>     <LastName>Abercrombie</LastName>     <FirstName>Kim</FirstName>     <HireDate>1995-03-11T00:00:00</HireDate>   </Person>   <Person>     <PersonID>2</PersonID>     <LastName>Barzdukas</LastName>     <FirstName>Gytis</FirstName>     <EnrollmentDate>2005-09-01T00:00:00</EnrollmentDate>   </Person>   <Person>     ... You can also have data from various tables in one single xml file, if that's appropriate for you (but beware of the already mentioned ordering issues). It's true that your test assembly may end up with dozens of such xml files, each containing quite a big amount of text data. But because the files are of very low complexity, and with the help of a little bit of Copy/Paste and Excel magic, this appears to be well manageable. Executing some basic tests Here are some of the possible tests that can be written with the above preparations in place: private const string People = @"..\..\TestData\School.People.xml"; ... [Test, MultipleAsserts, TestsOn("PersonRepository.GetNameList")] public void GetNameList_ListOrdering_ReturnsTheExpectedFullNames() {     InsertTestData(People);     List<string> names =         _personRepository.GetNameList(NameOrdering.List);     Assert.Count(34, names);     Assert.AreEqual("Abercrombie, Kim", names.First());     Assert.AreEqual("Zheng, Roger", names.Last()); } [Test, MultipleAsserts, TestsOn("PersonRepository.GetNameList")] [DependsOn("RemovePerson_CalledOnce_DecreasesCountByOne")] public void GetNameList_NormalOrdering_ReturnsTheExpectedFullNames() {     InsertTestData(People);     List<string> names =         _personRepository.GetNameList(NameOrdering.Normal);     Assert.Count(34, names);     Assert.AreEqual("Alexandra Walker", names.First());     Assert.AreEqual("Yan Li", names.Last()); } [Test, TestsOn("PersonRepository.AddPerson")] public void AddPerson_CalledOnce_IncreasesCountByOne() {     InsertTestData(People);     int count = _personRepository.Count;     _personRepository.AddPerson(new Person { FirstName = "Thomas", LastName = "Weller" });     Assert.AreEqual(count + 1, _personRepository.Count); } [Test, TestsOn("PersonRepository.RemovePerson")] public void RemovePerson_CalledOnce_DecreasesCountByOne() {     InsertTestData(People);     int count = _personRepository.Count;     _personRepository.RemovePerson(new Person { PersonID = 33 });     Assert.AreEqual(count - 1, _personRepository.Count); } Not much difference here compared to the corresponding Typemock versions, except that we had to do a bit more preparational work (and also it was harder to get the required knowledge). But this picture changes quite dramatically if we look at some more demanding test cases: Ok, and what if things are becoming somewhat more complex? Tests like the above ones represent the 'easy' scenarios. They may account for the biggest portion of real-world use cases of the application, and they are important to make sure that it is generally sound. But usually, all these nasty little bugs originate from the more complex parts of our code, or they occur when something goes wrong. So, for a testing strategy to be of real practical use, it is especially important to see how easy or difficult it is to mimick a scenario which represents a more complex or exceptional case. The following test, for example, deals with the case that there is some sort of invalid input from the caller: [Test, MultipleAsserts, TestsOn("PersonRepository.GetCourseMembers")] [Row(null, typeof(ArgumentNullException))] [Row("", typeof(ArgumentException))] [Row("NotExistingCourse", typeof(ArgumentException))] public void GetCourseMembers_WithGivenVariousInvalidValues_Throws(string courseTitle, Type expectedInnerExceptionType) {     var exception = Assert.Throws<RepositoryException>(() =>                                 _personRepository.GetCourseMembers(courseTitle));     Assert.IsInstanceOfType(expectedInnerExceptionType, exception.InnerException); } Apparently, this test doesn't need an 'Arrange' part at all (see here for the same test with the Typemock tool). It acts just like any other client code, and all the required business logic comes from the database itself. This doesn't always necessarily mean that there is less complexity, but only that the complexity happens in a different part of your test resources (in the xml files namely, where you sometimes have to spend a lot of effort for carefully preparing the required test data). Another example, which relies on an underlying 1-n relationship, might be this: [Test, MultipleAsserts, TestsOn("PersonRepository.GetCourseMembers")] public void GetCourseMembers_WhenGivenAnExistingCourse_ReturnsListOfStudents() {     InsertTestData(People, Course, Department, StudentGrade);     List<Person> persons = _personRepository.GetCourseMembers("Macroeconomics");     Assert.Count(4, persons);     Assert.ForAll(         persons,         @p => new[] { 10, 11, 12, 14 }.Contains(@p.PersonID),         "Person has none of the expected IDs."); } If you compare this test to its corresponding Typemock version, you immediately see that the test itself is much simpler, easier to read, and thus much more intention-revealing. The complexity here lies hidden behind the call to the InsertTestData() helper method and the content of the used xml files with the test data. And also note that you might have to provide additional data which are not even directly relevant to your test, but are required only to fulfill some integrity needs of the underlying database. Conclusion The first thing to notice when comparing the NDbUnit approach to its Typemock counterpart obviously deals with performance: Of course, NDbUnit is much slower than Typemock. Technically,  it doesn't even make sense to compare the two tools. But practically, it may well play a role and could or could not be an issue, depending on how much tests you have of this kind, how often you run them, and what role they play in your development cycle. Also, because the dataset from the required xsd file must fully match the database schema (even in parts that otherwise wouldn't be relevant to you), it can be quite cumbersome to be in a team where different people are working with the database in parallel. My personal experience is – as already said in the first part – that Typemock gives you a better development experience in a 'dynamic' scenario (when you're working in some kind of TDD-style, you're oftentimes executing the tests from your dev box, and your database schema changes frequently), whereas the NDbUnit approach is a good and solid solution in more 'static' development scenarios (when you need to execute the tests less frequently or only on a separate build server, and/or the underlying database schema can be kept relatively stable), for example some variations of higher-level integration or User-Acceptance tests. But in any case, opening Entity Framework based applications for testing requires a fair amount of resources, planning, and preparational work – it's definitely not the kind of stuff that you would call 'easy to test'. Hopefully, future versions of EF will take testing concerns into account. Otherwise, I don't see too much of a future for the framework in the long run, even though it's quite popular at the moment... The sample solution A sample solution (VS 2010) with the code from this article series is available via my Bitbucket account from here (Bitbucket is a hosting site for Mercurial repositories. The repositories may also be accessed with the Git and Subversion SCMs - consult the documentation for details. In addition, it is possible to download the solution simply as a zipped archive – via the 'get source' button on the very right.). The solution contains some more tests against the PersonRepository class, which are not shown here. Also, it contains database scripts to create and fill the School sample database. To compile and run, the solution expects the Gallio/MbUnit framework to be installed (which is free and can be downloaded from here), the NDbUnit framework (which is also free and can be downloaded from here), and the Typemock Isolator tool (a fully functional 30day-trial is available here). Moreover, you will need an instance of the Microsoft SQL Server DBMS, and you will have to adapt the connection strings in the test projects App.config files accordingly.

  • SQL Server Scripts I Use

    - by Bill Graziano
When I get to a new client I usually find myself using the same set of scripts for maintenance and troubleshooting.  These are all drop in solutions for various maintenance issues. Reindexing.  I use Michelle Ufford’s (SQLFool) re-indexing script.  I like that it has a throttle and only re-indexes when needed.  She also has a variety of other interesting scripts on her blog too. Server Activity.  Adam Machanic is up to version 10 of sp_WhoIsActive.  It’s a great replacement for the sp_who* stored procedures and does so much more.  If a server is acting funny this is one of the first tools I use. Backups.  Tara Kizer has a great little T-SQL script for SQL Server backups.  Wait Stats.  Paul Randal has a great script to display wait stats.  The biggest benefit for me is that his script filters out at least three dozen wait stats that I just don’t care about (for example LAZYWRITER_SLEEP). Update Statistics.  I didn’t find anything I liked so I wrote a simple script to update stats myself.  The big need for me was that it had to run inside a time window and update the oldest statistics first.  Is there a better one? Diagnostic Queries.  Glenn Berry has a huge collection of DMV queries available.  He also just highlighted five of them including two I really like dealing with unused indexes and suggested indexes. Single Use Query Plans.  Kim Tripp has a script that counts the number of single-use query plans.  This should guide you in whether to enable the Optimize for Adhoc Workloads option in SQL Server 2008. Granting Permissions to Developers.  This is one of those scripts I didn’t even know I needed until I needed it.  Kendra Little wrote it to grant a login read-only permission to all the databases.  It also grants view server state and a few other handy permissions.   What else do you use?  What should I add to my list?

  • Too Few Women in IT!

    - by Yolande
Last year, only 1% of attendees at Devoxx were women . This year, Devoxx addressed the issue in a panel entitled "Why We Should Target Women." On the panel were Kim Ross, Régina ten Bruggencate, Trisha Gee, Antonio Goncalves and Claude Falguiére. The moderator was Martijn Verburg. The discussion focused on how to attract women to programming and how to get current women programmers to be more active in the community. The panelists agreed that the IT field should not just attract more women but also men of different ethnic backgrounds. The lack of women in programming is in part a cultural issue that differs from region to region. In developed countries, very few women work as programmers whereas in Brazil and India a lot of women pursue careers in IT.  Women in developed countries perceive the field as isolating and very few young women graduate in computer science.  This perception of isolation was based in reality decades ago, but that is no longer the case today. Main ideas discussed by the panel: - Parents should encourage their daughters to play with Lego and learn programming - More organizations should target girls in high schools and young women in university to expose them to programming.  Duchess organization is planning on being more involved with young girl events and mentoring. - Women tend to be more self-critical about their skills and are intimidated by high skill requirements in job advertisements. Companies should change job advertisements to get more women to interviews. - Panelists don't recommend affirmative action because women feel favored and lose credibility. They want to be judged for their skills. - Panelists recommend acting the same way when dealing with either female or male co-workers and managers - Women need mentors (men or women) to learn to become speakers at conferences and to promote themselves better - Men should be sensitive to the fact that women are alone at work to respond to men teasing. The balance of power at work is different from a social setting. - Men also experience discrimination on the job. It is more difficult for men to take time off when their children are sick, for example. Equal valuing of parental obligations could result in equal pay for women. • 9000+ different subdomains 301 to main domain, .htacess apache

    - by Karim
I bought a domain that had various subdomains such as Kim.domain.com/whatever john.domain.com/whatever1 Lizo.domain.com/whatever2 Simon.domain.com/whatever1 And this was in the thousands, and also had links to these pages I'd like to do a 301 redirect for all these urls into http://domain.com Any idea how this could be done? This is for a apache web server and needs to be done via .htaccess I have implemented the solution from reading the answer below. RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www. domain.com$ RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^$ RewriteRule ^/(.*)$ http:/ / www. domain.com/$1 [L,R=301] However I have a slight problem, I would like to redirect all subdomains + subfolders to http://www. domain.com/ With the exception of http: //domain. com/subfolder/, in which case I would like to redirect to http: // www.domain. com/subfolder/ [i.e. exception for no subdomain] I'm guessing I need to add an exception, what can I do to implement this. Note: example URLs above have had spaces added to them to prevent spam blocks for blocking the post.

The focus of my talk was Mobile Technology in Human Resources, and while still a new and developing area, the enormous growth and ubiquitous presence of mobile devices and increasing importance of and demand for constant connectivity in both our personal and professional lives has put planning and developing a mobile HR technology strategy high on many organizations lists of priorities in 2012. Numerous studies have shown that the confluence of ever-rising sales of smartphones and tablets; and the increasing tendency for workers of all kinds to be more mobile and less tied down to traditional, fixed-location workplaces and what now seem like old-fashioned PC-centric and traditional computing environments are driving Human Resources leaders to think about how, where, when, and for whom that the deployment of mobile HR solutions will help them address their business needs, and put information in the hands of those that need it, when they need it, and on their preferred devices. In the session we talked about some of the potential opportunities for mobile HR technologies, from simple workflow-based approval capability, to employee directories and robust employee profiles, to more advanced use cases like internal social networking and location-based mobile recruiting applications. And truly we are just scratching the surface of the potential and the value that all kinds of HR-related mobile technologies will help deliver to enterprises in the coming years. Additionally, it was encouraging to talk with many of the HR leaders in attendance who expressed interest in these kinds of mobile HR technology opportunities, as well as to hear how some of them are already working on developing their own mobile strategies or experimenting with mobile solutions in their workforces. It was a fantastic meeting and I’d like to express my thanks to Kim Bryant, IHRIM Atlanta/SE Board President, the other board members, and also the IHRIM Atlanta Chapter members and attendees at the event. If you are in the Atlanta area and are interested in HR and HR Technology, you can learn more about the programs and services that the Chapter has to offer at their website - http://www.ihrimatlantase.org/. And for people that are interested in what we at Oracle are working on in mobile, you can also sign up to receive the latest updates about the Oracle Fusion Applications tablet solutions, Oracle Fusion Tap, at https://fusiontap.oracle.com/.

  • Infiniband: a highperformance network fabric - Part I

    - by Karoly Vegh
Introduction:At the OpenWorld this year I managed to chat with interesting people again - one of them answering Infiniband deepdive questions with ease by coffee turned out to be one of Oracle's IB engineers, Ted Kim, who actually actively participates in the Infiniband Trade Association and integrates Oracle solutions with this highspeed network. This is why I love attending OOW. He granted me an hour of his time to talk about IB. This post is mostly based on that tech interview.Start of the actual post: Traditionally datatransfer between servers and storage elements happens in networks with up to 10 gigabit/seconds or in SANs with up to 8 gbps fiberchannel connections. Happens. Well, data rather trickles through. But nowadays data amounts grow well over the TeraByte order of magnitude, and multisocket/multicore/multithread Servers hunger data that these transfer technologies just can't deliver fast enough, causing all CPUs of this world do one thing at the same speed - waiting for data. And once again, I/O is the bottleneck in computing. FC and Ethernet can't keep up. We have half-TB SSDs, dozens of TB RAM to store data to be modified in, but can't transfer it. Can't backup fast enough, can't replicate fast enough, can't synchronize fast enough, can't load fast enough. The bad news is, everyone is used to this, like back in the '80s everyone was used to start compile jobs and go for a coffee. Or on vacation. The good news is, there's an alternative. Not so-called "bleeding-edge" 8gbps, but (as of now) 56. Not layers of overhead, but low latency. And it is available now. It has been for a while, actually. Welcome to the world of Infiniband. Short history:Infiniband was born as a result of joint efforts of HPAQ, IBM, Intel, Sun and Microsoft. They planned to implement a next-generation I/O fabric, in the 90s. In the 2000s Infiniband (from now on: IB) was quite popular in the high-performance computing field, powering most of the top500 supercomputers. Then in the middle of the decade, Oracle realized its potential and used it as an interconnect backbone for the first Database Machine, the first Exadata. Since then, IB has been booming, Oracle utilizes and supports it in a large set of its HW products, it is the backbone of the famous Engineered Systems: Exadata, SPARC SuperCluster, Exalogic, OVCA and even the new DB backup/recovery box. You can also use it to make servers talk highspeed IP to eachother, or to a ZFS Storage Appliance. Following Oracle's lead, even IBM has jumped the wagon, and leverages IB in its PureFlex systems, their first InfiniBand Machines.IB Structural Overview: If you want to use IB in your servers, the first thing you will need is PCI cards, in IB terms Host Channel Adapters, or HCAs. Just like NICs for Ethernet, or HBAs for FC. In these you plug an IB cable, going to an IB switch providing connection to other IB HCAs. Of course you're going to need drivers for those in your OS. Yes, these are long-available for Solaris and Linux. Now, what protocols can you talk over IB? There's a range of choices. See, IB isn't accepting package loss like Ethernet does, and hence doesn't need to rely on TCP/IP as a workaround for resends. That is, you still can run IP over IB (IPoIB), and that is used in various cases for control functionality, but the datatransfer can run over more efficient protocols - like native IB. About PCI connectivity: IB cards, as you see are fast. They bring low latency, which is just as important as their bandwidth. Current IB cards run at 56 gbit/s. That is slightly more than double of the capacity of a PCI Gen2 slot (of ~25 gbit/s). And IB cards are equipped usually with two ports - that is, altogether you'd need 112 gbit/s PCI slots, to be able to utilize FDR IB cards in an active-active fashion. PCI Gen3 slots provide you with around ~50gbps. This is why the most IB cards are configured in an active-standby way if both ports are used. Once again the PCI slot is the bottleneck. Anyway, the new Oracle servers are equipped with Gen3 PCI slots, an the new IB HCAs support those too. Oracle utilizes the QDR HCAs, running at 40gbp/s brutto, which translates to a 32gbp/s net traffic due to the 10:8 signal-to-data information ratio. Consolidation techniques: Technology never stops to evolve. Mellanox is working on the 100 gbps (EDR) version already, which will be optical, since signal technology doesn't allow EDR to be copper. Also, I hear you say "100gbps? I will never use/need that much". Are you sure? Have you considered consolidation scenarios, where (for example with Oracle Virtual Network) you could consolidate your platform to a high densitiy virtualized solution providing many virtual 10gbps interfaces through that 100gbps? Technology never stops to evolve. I still remember when a 10mbps network was impressively fast. Back in those days, 16MB of RAM was a lot. Now we usually run servers with around 100.000 times more RAM. If network infrastrucure speends could grow as fast as main memory capacities, we'd have a different landscape now :) You can utilize SRIOV as well for consolidation. That is, if you run LDoms (aka Oracle VM Server for SPARC) you do not have to add physical IB cards to all your guest LDoms, and you do not need to run VIO devices through the hypervisor either (avoiding overhead). You can enable SRIOV on those IB cards, which practically virtualizes the PCI bus, and you can dedicate Physical- and Virtual Functions of the virtualized HCAs as native, physical HW devices to your guests. See Raghuram's excellent post explaining SRIOV. SRIOV for IB is supported since LDoms 3.1.  This post is getting lengthier, so I will rename it to Part I, and continue it in a second post.

  • Beautifulsoup recursive attribute

    - by Marcos Placona
Hi, trying to parse an XML with Beautifulsoup, but hit a brick wall when trying to use the "recursive" attribute with findall() I have a pretty odd xml format shown below: <?xml version="1.0"?> <catalog> <book id="bk101"> <author>Gambardella, Matthew</author> <title>XML Developer's Guide</title> <genre>Computer</genre> <price>44.95</price> <publish_date>2000-10-01</publish_date> <description>An in-depth look at creating applications with XML.</description> <catalog>true</catalog> </book> <book id="bk102"> <author>Ralls, Kim</author> <title>Midnight Rain</title> <genre>Fantasy</genre> <price>5.95</price> <publish_date>2000-12-16</publish_date> <description>A former architect battles corporate zombies, an evil sorceress, and her own childhood to become queen of the world.</description> <catalog>false</catalog> </book> </catalog> As you can see, the catalog tag repeats inside the book tag, which causes an error when I try to to something like: from BeautifulSoup import BeautifulStoneSoup as BSS catalog = "catalog.xml" def open_rss(): f = open(catalog, 'r') return f.read() def rss_parser(): rss_contents = open_rss() soup = BSS(rss_contents) items = soup.findAll('catalog', recursive=False) for item in items: print item.title.string rss_parser() As you will see, on my soup.findAll I've added recursive=false, which in theory would make it no recurse through the item found, but skip to the next one. This doesn't seem to work, as I always get the following error: File "catalog.py", line 17, in rss_parser print item.title.string AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'string' I'm sure I'm doing something stupid here, and would appreciate if someone could give me some help on how to solve this problem. Changing the HTML structure is not an option, this this code needs to perform well as it will potentially parse a large XML file. Thanks in advance, Marcos

  • php split array into smaller even arrays

    - by SoulieBaby
    I have a function that is supposed to split my array into smaller, evenly distributed arrays, however it seems to be duplicating my data along the way. If anyone can help me out that'd be great. Here's the original array: Array ( [0] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 42 [name] => Ray White Mordialloc [imageurl] => sp_raywhite.gif [clickurl] => http://www.raywhite.com/ ) [1] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 48 [name] => Beachside Osteo [imageurl] => sp_beachside.gif [clickurl] => http://www.beachsideosteo.com.au/ ) [2] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 53 [name] => Carmotive [imageurl] => sp_carmotive.jpg [clickurl] => http://www.carmotive.com.au/ ) [3] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 51 [name] => Richmond and Bennison [imageurl] => sp_richmond.jpg [clickurl] => http://www.richbenn.com.au/ ) [4] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 50 [name] => Letec [imageurl] => sp_letec.jpg [clickurl] => www.letec.biz ) [5] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 39 [name] => Main Street Mordialloc [imageurl] => main street cafe.jpg [clickurl] => ) [6] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 40 [name] => Ripponlea Mitsubishi [imageurl] => sp_mitsubishi.gif [clickurl] => ) [7] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 34 [name] => Adrianos Pizza & Pasta [imageurl] => sp_adrian.gif [clickurl] => ) [8] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 59 [name] => Pure Sport [imageurl] => sp_psport.jpg [clickurl] => http://www.puresport.com.au/ ) [9] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 33 [name] => Two Brothers [imageurl] => sp_2brothers.gif [clickurl] => http://www.2brothers.com.au/ ) [10] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 52 [name] => Mordialloc Travel and Cruise [imageurl] => sp_morditravel.jpg [clickurl] => http://www.yellowpages.com.au/vic/mordialloc/mordialloc-travel-cruise-13492525-listing.html ) [11] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 57 [name] => Southern Suburbs Physiotherapy Centre [imageurl] => sp_sspc.jpg [clickurl] => http://www.sspc.com.au ) [12] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 54 [name] => PPM Builders [imageurl] => sp_ppm.jpg [clickurl] => http://www.hotfrog.com.au/Companies/P-P-M-Builders ) [13] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 36 [name] => Big River [imageurl] => sp_bigriver.gif [clickurl] => ) [14] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 35 [name] => Bendigo Bank Parkdale / Mentone East [imageurl] => sp_bendigo.gif [clickurl] => http://www.bendigobank.com.au ) [15] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 56 [name] => Logical Services [imageurl] => sp_logical.jpg [clickurl] => ) [16] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 58 [name] => Dicount Lollie Shop [imageurl] => new dls logo.jpg [clickurl] => ) [17] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 46 [name] => Patterson Securities [imageurl] => cmyk patersons_withtag.jpg [clickurl] => ) [18] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 44 [name] => Mordialloc Personal Trainers [imageurl] => sp_mordipt.gif [clickurl] => # ) [19] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 37 [name] => Mordialloc Cellar Door [imageurl] => sp_cellardoor.gif [clickurl] => ) [20] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 41 [name] => Print House Graphics [imageurl] => sp_printhouse.gif [clickurl] => ) [21] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 55 [name] => 360South [imageurl] => sp_360.jpg [clickurl] => ) [22] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 43 [name] => Systema [imageurl] => sp_systema.gif [clickurl] => ) [23] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 38 [name] => Lowe Financial Group [imageurl] => sp_lowe.gif [clickurl] => http://lowefinancial.com/ ) [24] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 49 [name] => Kim Reed Conveyancing [imageurl] => sp_kimreed.jpg [clickurl] => ) [25] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 45 [name] => Mordialloc Sporting Club [imageurl] => msc logo.jpg [clickurl] => ) ) Here's the php function which is meant to split the array: function split_array($array, $slices) { $perGroup = floor(count($array) / $slices); $Remainder = count($array) % $slices ; $slicesArray = array(); $i = 0; while( $i < $slices ) { $slicesArray[$i] = array_slice($array, $i * $perGroup, $perGroup); $i++; } if ( $i == $slices ) { if ($Remainder > 0 && $Remainder < $slices) { $z = $i * $perGroup +1; $x++; $z++; } } }; return $slicesArray; } Here's the result of the split (it somehow duplicates items from the original array into the smaller arrays): Array ( [0] => Array ( [0] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 57 [name] => Southern Suburbs Physiotherapy Centre [imageurl] => sp_sspc.jpg [clickurl] => http://www.sspc.com.au ) [1] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 35 [name] => Bendigo Bank Parkdale / Mentone East [imageurl] => sp_bendigo.gif [clickurl] => http://www.bendigobank.com.au ) [2] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 38 [name] => Lowe Financial Group [imageurl] => sp_lowe.gif [clickurl] => http://lowefinancial.com/ ) [3] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 39 [name] => Main Street Mordialloc [imageurl] => main street cafe.jpg [clickurl] => ) [4] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 48 [name] => Beachside Osteo [imageurl] => sp_beachside.gif [clickurl] => http://www.beachsideosteo.com.au/ ) [5] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 33 [name] => Two Brothers [imageurl] => sp_2brothers.gif [clickurl] => http://www.2brothers.com.au/ ) [6] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 40 [name] => Ripponlea Mitsubishi [imageurl] => sp_mitsubishi.gif [clickurl] => ) ) [1] => Array ( [0] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 44 [name] => Mordialloc Personal Trainers [imageurl] => sp_mordipt.gif [clickurl] => # ) [1] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 41 [name] => Print House Graphics [imageurl] => sp_printhouse.gif [clickurl] => ) [2] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 39 [name] => Main Street Mordialloc [imageurl] => main street cafe.jpg [clickurl] => ) [3] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 48 [name] => Beachside Osteo [imageurl] => sp_beachside.gif [clickurl] => http://www.beachsideosteo.com.au/ ) [4] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 33 [name] => Two Brothers [imageurl] => sp_2brothers.gif [clickurl] => http://www.2brothers.com.au/ ) [5] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 40 [name] => Ripponlea Mitsubishi [imageurl] => sp_mitsubishi.gif [clickurl] => ) ) [2] => Array ( [0] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 56 [name] => Logical Services [imageurl] => sp_logical.jpg [clickurl] => ) [1] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 43 [name] => Systema [imageurl] => sp_systema.gif [clickurl] => ) [2] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 48 [name] => Beachside Osteo [imageurl] => sp_beachside.gif [clickurl] => http://www.beachsideosteo.com.au/ ) [3] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 33 [name] => Two Brothers [imageurl] => sp_2brothers.gif [clickurl] => http://www.2brothers.com.au/ ) [4] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 40 [name] => Ripponlea Mitsubishi [imageurl] => sp_mitsubishi.gif [clickurl] => ) ) [3] => Array ( [0] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 53 [name] => Carmotive [imageurl] => sp_carmotive.jpg [clickurl] => http://www.carmotive.com.au/ ) [1] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 45 [name] => Mordialloc Sporting Club [imageurl] => msc logo.jpg [clickurl] => ) [2] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 33 [name] => Two Brothers [imageurl] => sp_2brothers.gif [clickurl] => http://www.2brothers.com.au/ ) [3] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 40 [name] => Ripponlea Mitsubishi [imageurl] => sp_mitsubishi.gif [clickurl] => ) ) [4] => Array ( [0] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 59 [name] => Pure Sport [imageurl] => sp_psport.jpg [clickurl] => http://www.puresport.com.au/ ) [1] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 54 [name] => PPM Builders [imageurl] => sp_ppm.jpg [clickurl] => http://www.hotfrog.com.au/Companies/P-P-M-Builders ) [2] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 40 [name] => Ripponlea Mitsubishi [imageurl] => sp_mitsubishi.gif [clickurl] => ) ) [5] => Array ( [0] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 46 [name] => Patterson Securities [imageurl] => cmyk patersons_withtag.jpg [clickurl] => ) [1] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 34 [name] => Adriano's Pizza & Pasta [imageurl] => sp_adrian.gif [clickurl] => # ) ) [6] => Array ( [0] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 55 [name] => 360South [imageurl] => sp_360.jpg [clickurl] => ) [1] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 37 [name] => Mordialloc Cellar Door [imageurl] => sp_cellardoor.gif [clickurl] => ) ) [7] => Array ( [0] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 49 [name] => Kim Reed Conveyancing [imageurl] => sp_kimreed.jpg [clickurl] => ) [1] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 58 [name] => Dicount Lollie Shop [imageurl] => new dls logo.jpg [clickurl] => ) ) [8] => Array ( [0] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 51 [name] => Richmond and Bennison [imageurl] => sp_richmond.jpg [clickurl] => http://www.richbenn.com.au/ ) [1] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 52 [name] => Mordialloc Travel and Cruise [imageurl] => sp_morditravel.jpg [clickurl] => http://www.yellowpages.com.au/vic/mordialloc/mordialloc-travel-cruise-13492525-listing.html ) ) [9] => Array ( [0] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 50 [name] => Letec [imageurl] => sp_letec.jpg [clickurl] => www.letec.biz ) [1] => stdClass Object ( [bid] => 36 [name] => Big River [imageurl] => sp_bigriver.gif [clickurl] => ) ) ) ^^ As you can see there are duplicates from the original array in the newly created smaller arrays. I thought I could remove the duplicates using a multi-dimensional remove duplicate function but that didn't work. I'm guessing my problem is in the array_split function. Any suggestions? :)

  • StaX: Content not allowed in prolog

    - by RalfB
I have the following (test) XML file below and Java code that uses StaX. I want to apply this code to a file that is about 30 GB large but with fairly small elements, so I thought StaX is a good choice.
