  • Linux: prevent outgoing TCP flood

    - by Willem
I run several hundred webservers behind loadbalancers, hosting many different sites with a plethora of applications (of which I have no control). About once every month, one of the sites gets hacked and a flood script is uploaded to attack some bank or political institution. In the past, these were always UDP floods which were effectively resolved by blocking outgoing UDP traffic on the individual webserver. Yesterday they started flooding a large US bank from our servers using many TCP connections to port 80. As these type of connections are perfectly valid for our applications, just blocking them is not an acceptable solution. I am considering the following alternatives. Which one would you recommend? Have you implemented these, and how? Limit on the webserver (iptables) outgoing TCP packets with source port != 80 Same but with queueing (tc) Rate limit outgoing traffic per user per server. Quite an administrative burden, as there are potentially 1000's of different users per application server. Maybe this: how can I limit per user bandwidth? Anything else? Naturally, I'm also looking into ways to minimize the chance of hackers getting into one of our hosted sites, but as that mechanism will never be 100% waterproof, I want to severely limit the impact of an intrusion. Cheers!

  • Variable Assignment for arguments with a for loop

    - by RainbowDashDC
    Alright, so, I've searched quite a bit on how to do this but I've given up as I simply couldn't find anything. So, I have a code (below); it's main purpose is to get 9 arguments and assign them as a variable-- ignore the echo's and pipping. My question is: How can I simplfy this with a for loop or such so it doesn't take as much code, and if possible, have more than 9 arguments aswell set pkg1=%1 set pkg2=%2 set pkg3=%3 set pkg4=%4 set pkg5=%5 set pkg6=%6 set pkg7=%7 set pkg8=%8 set pkg9=%9 IF DEFINED pkg1 (echo %1.ini 1> %WINGET_TEMP%\args.rdc 2>nul) IF DEFINED pkg2 (echo %2.ini 1>> %WINGET_TEMP%\args.rdc 2>nul) IF DEFINED pkg3 (echo %3.ini 1>> %WINGET_TEMP%\args.rdc 2>nul) IF DEFINED pkg4 (echo %4.ini 1>> %WINGET_TEMP%\args.rdc 2>nul) IF DEFINED pkg5 (echo %5.ini 1>> %WINGET_TEMP%\args.rdc 2>nul) IF DEFINED pkg6 (echo %6.ini 1>> %WINGET_TEMP%\args.rdc 2>nul) IF DEFINED pkg7 (echo %7.ini 1>> %WINGET_TEMP%\args.rdc 2>nul) IF DEFINED pkg8 (echo %8.ini 1>> %WINGET_TEMP%\args.rdc 2>nul) IF DEFINED pkg9 (echo %9.ini 1>> %WINGET_TEMP%\args.rdc 2>nul)

  • Windows batch-file that continues after launching each program

    - by Sandy
I'm trying to create a very simple Windows-XP batch file: Program1.exe Sleep 3 Program2.exe Sleep 5 Program3.exe Sleep 11 Of course, I don't want to have to exit each program, before the next 1 starts. The default for batch-files seems to be "stop until the previous program exists". How do I get this script to run as expected? Edit: The 3 executables listed above are more like "notepad" type programs. They open and run and don't just "open, run, close".

  • Determining End of Line Delimiter

    - by Michael Merchant
How do you verify what the delimiter for a file is? I'm using eclipse to edit a script file on my windows system that I use to deploy on my unix server. The script specifies file names and I'd like to be certain that eclipse is saving the files with unix end of line delimiters. I've set my preferences to use the Unix Line Delimiter on new files using: Window > Preferences > General > Workspace > "New text file line delimiter" And have changed my script file's line delimiter using. File -> Convert Line Delimiters To Is there a way (preferably with the eclipse IDE) to check that there is no "\r"?

  • Finding day of week in batch file? (Windows Server 2008)

    - by Daniel Magliola
I have a process I run from a batch file, and i only want to run it on a certain day of the week. Is it possible to get the day of week? All the example I found, somehow rely on "date /t" to return "Friday, 12/11/2009", however, in my machine, "date /t" returns "12/11/2009". No weekday there. I've already checked the "regional settings" for my machine, and the long date format does include the weekday. The short date format doesn't, but i'd really rather not change that, since it'll affect a bunch of stuff I do. Any ideas here? Thanks! Daniel

  • Windows 7 batch files: How to write string to text file without carriage return AND trailing space?

    - by oscilatingcretin
I am trying to have my batch file write a string of text to a text file. At first, the command I was using was writing an extra carriage return to the end of the string, but I found this command that prevented that: echo|set /p=hello>hello.txt However, now it's putting a trailing space at the end. I need only the string I specify to be written without any extra characters. Is this possible?

  • Blocking IP addresses Load Balanced Cluster

    - by Dom
Hi We're using HAproxy as a front end load balancer / proxy and are looking for solutions to block random IP addresses from jamming the cluster. Is anyone familiar with a conf for HAProxy that can block requests if they exceed a certain threshold from a single IP within a defined period of time. Or can anyone suggest a software solution which could be placed in front of HAProxy to handle this kind of blocking. Thanks Dom--

  • Home server running 2008 R2 intermittently bringing our internet down by creating a large amount of connections [closed]

    - by Philip Strong
Possible Duplicate: My server's been hacked EMERGENCY My Server 2008 R2 home server is intermittently (every 30 minutes or so, for about 3-4 minutes) creating a huge amount of connections which reaches the 4096 connection limit, thus effectively DOSing our internet connection. I've run a couple of network traffic monitors, and it appears to be a system process causing the problem. I thought I'd fixed it by reinstalling Comodo Antivirus, but it appears that wasn't the problem. Any thought? Thanks in advance.

  • Void in main and keeping Dos program from dying

    - by TimothyTech
Alright, so im using bloodshed complier, first thing i should note is im using a 2001 edition C++ for the aboslute beginner, was there any changes to C++ since 2001 that would effect the validity of this book? i ask because i know php has php5 and now php6 but i havent seen any C++3. now for the reason i asked that, in this code it uses, void main (void) why would i want an arguement to be void? what does this do. But when i run the " void main (void) in my compiler it says that main must have a "int" before it. so i cant have "void" main (void); also, once the code runs through, as long as there isnt a "cin" the program closes. is this normal behavior, is there a better way to stop this besides making a cin at the end of my program.

  • Unable to link to opengl libraries? DOS / MSVC

    - by Mark
Is there something wrong with this link.exe command line? OpenGL32.lib and Glu32.lib are found at both of the LIBPATH directories. Is it possible the libraries are somehow incompatible? Is there a way to have the link.exe say that instead of unresolved external symbol? Googling shows that this error usually means the libraries are not found, but they are there. • Batch file script to remove special characters from filenames (Windows)

    - by njreed.myopenid.com
I have a large set of files, some of which contain special characters in the filename (e.g. ä,ö,%, and others). I'd like a script file to iterate over these files and rename them removing the special characters. I don't really mind what it does, but it could replace them with underscores for example e.g. Störung%20.doc would be renamed to St_rung_20.doc In order of preference: A DOS batch file A Windows script file to run with cscript (vbs) A third party piece of software that can be run from the command-line (i.e. no user interaction required) Another language script file, for which I'd have to install an additional script engine Background: I'm trying to encrypt these file with GnuPG on Windows but it doesn't seem to handle special characters in filenames with the --encrypt-files option.

  • Batch File input validation - Make sure user entered an integer

    - by B2Ben
I'm experimenting with a DOS batch file to perform a simple operation which requires the user to enter a non-negative integer. I'm using simple batch-file techniques to get user input: @ECHO OFF SET /P UserInput=Please Enter a Number: The user can enter any text they want here, so I would like to add some routine to make sure what the user entered was a valid number. That is... they entered at least one character, and every character is a number from 0 to 9. I'd like something I can feed the UserInput into. At the end of the routine would be like an if/then that would run different statements based on whether or not it was actually a valid number. I've experimented with loops and substrings and such, but my knowledge and understanding is still slim... so any help would be appreciated. I could build an executable, and I know there are nicer ways to do things than batch files, but at least for this task I'm trying to keep it simple by using a batch file.

  • why this assembly program is loaded from the address 0B3D:0000?

    - by viperchaos
I have seen a assembly program written from a book about assemble: assume cs:code code segment dw 0123h,0456h,0789h,0abch,0defh,0fedh,0cbah,0987h mov bx,0 mov ax,0 mov cx,8 s: add ax,cs:[bx] add bx,2 loop s mov ax,4c00h int 21h code ends end This program's function is to add eight numbers. The author compiled this program in the DOS and use the DEBUG to see how this program be loaded. The author use the R command and got that DS = 0B2DH ES = 0B2D SS = 0B3D CS = 0B3D IP = 0000 And then the author said that this program is loaded from the address 0B3D:0000. I'm a confused that why this program is loaded from the address 0B3D:0000? Is this because the existence of the Program Segment Prefix(PSP)? If the answer is the existence of the PSP, what is in the PSP?

  • Decompiling an old Program

    - by Pedro Laranjeiro
Hi. I have been asked to update a program written in 1987 in Delphi (I guess). I have no documentation about this program only a few side notes the programmer took that don't make too much sense to make. The cd show this files: Size | Filename - 19956 VP.DTA - 142300 VP.LEX - 404 VP.NDX - 126502 VP.RCS - 131016 VP.SCR - 150067 VP.XEL - 101791 vp.exe Is anyone of this files a database? If so can I access it's data? I tried several code decompilers but they show a message saying it was not a Win32 compatible application. The program run in MS-DOS. Is it possible to obtain the source code? Can I use this code in any way to build a new application? Thanks Update01: I can run the program in MSDOS. The program conjugate verbs and shows an example sentence where the verb can be used. The GUI is a little bit confusing and there is no help menu so I can't see all the capabilities of the program.

  • reading keyboard input without "consuming" it in x86 assembly

    - by Bob
Ok so here the deal: I have an assignment regarding DOS and interrupts: I need to write a sort of key-logger function that can be called from C code. what it means is a c program would call an assembly function called startlog that would indicate to start logging the keys pressed until a function called endlog is called. the logging should work like this: write the ascii value of any key pressed without disturbing the C code between startlog and endlog, meaning that if the C code also needs to read the input (let's say by scanf, it would work ok). I managed to write the logger by changing the interrupt vector 9th entry (interrupt for keyboard press) to a function I wrote that writes the values to a file, and it works fine. however the C code does not get the input. Basically what i did is read the key pressed using int 21h, however after reading the ascii value it is "consumed" so I need a way to either simulate the key press again or read the value without "consuming" it so next time a key is read it reads the same key. (I described the code in english because it is long and clumsy assembly code)

  • permanently load module

    - by Radu
I have a Compaq Presario CQ-61 320SQ, I am using Ubuntu 10.04 because after update to 10.10 my mouse and touchpad won't work, network won't work, sound won't work ... (I managed to fix most of them after almost a month of googling, but not all, my 2 Desktops have no problem with 10.10) so I decided to switch back to 10.04, where I have a problem: My broadband speed is very low beacause of the kernel module r8169, I downloaded the good module r8101 and every time the computer boots have a rc.local entry to fix this. Question: Can I load the modul permanently from a specific location. I heard about /etc/modules but there I need the module name, but I have to load it from a specific path (where is the default path for that) Thank you. So I studied the script: It creates the file r8101.ko in /lib/modules/uname -r/kernel/drivers/net so I think as long as nobody will delete that file, and I don't update the kernel, maybe adding r8108 to /etc/modules will work, and add r8169 to blacklist ... I will give it a try. EDIT2: So I added r8101 to /etc/modules and blacklist r8169 to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf It still uses the old module, lsmod prints: radu@adu:~$ lsmod | grep r8 r8101 67626 0 r8169 34108 0 mii 4381 1 r8169 EDIT: the module is loaded using this script that came with it: #!/bin/sh # invoke insmod with all arguments we got # and use a pathname, as insmod doesn't look in . by default TARGET_PATH=/lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/net echo echo "Check old driver and unload it." check=`lsmod | grep r8169` if [ "$check" != "" ]; then echo "rmmod r8169" /sbin/rmmod r8169 fi check=`lsmod | grep r8101` if [ "$check" != "" ]; then echo "rmmod r8101" /sbin/rmmod r8101 fi echo "Build the module and install" echo "-------------------------------" >> log.txt date 1>>log.txt make all 1>>log.txt || exit 1 module=`ls src/*.ko` module=${module#src/} module=${module%.ko} if [ "$module" == "" ]; then echo "No driver exists!!!" exit 1 elif [ "$module" != "r8169" ]; then if test -e $TARGET_PATH/r8169.ko ; then echo "Backup r8169.ko" if test -e $TARGET_PATH/r8169.bak ; then i=0 while test -e $TARGET_PATH/r8169.bak$i do i=$(($i+1)) done echo "rename r8169.ko to r8169.bak$i" mv $TARGET_PATH/r8169.ko $TARGET_PATH/r8169.bak$i else echo "rename r8169.ko to r8169.bak" mv $TARGET_PATH/r8169.ko $TARGET_PATH/r8169.bak fi fi fi echo "Depending module.
