    Hi I have a very rudimentary question. Assume I call a function, e.g., def foo(): x = 'hello world' How do I get the function to return x in such a way that I can use it as the input for another function or use the variable within the body of a program?   • How to output to S-Video on Windows XP in single-monitor mode (clone display)?

    I am using an IBM ThinkPad T30 running Windows XP. It is connected to a TV system via S-Video output. Windows is currently set up in multi-monitor mode with monitor 2 being output to S-Video. However, since there is no preview monitor, I can't interact with anything I drag to monitor 2 as I can't see it. I would rather have the system set up so that there is only one monitor and the output is cloned to the laptop display and S-Video. This allows me to see what I'm doing on the TV system. Is this possible?

  • Understanding Microsoft Word Formatting Behavior. Does anyone?

    This isn't a question about how to do something (well, not directly), but rather an inquiry to see if anyone understands why MS Word behaves the way it does with respect to formatting from a design perspective. This is also admittedly a rant about Word. This is a question that has plagued me, well, every time I open a document in Word, and covers a lot of individual topics, so I'll restrict the discussion here to two concrete behaviors that baffle me. 1) Backspacing over whitespace changes the format of preceding text. This seems to most often occur when the preceding text is a header or list number. The strangest thing about this is the new format of the changed text usually doesn't appear anywhere else in the document. 2) Numbered lists count almost at random. I am working on a document today where the list numbers count as follows: 1, 2, 2, 3, 3. The lettering in the sublists go like this 1: a, 2: a, 2: b c d, 3: e f g, 3: a. Clicking on each number or letter highlights the other numbers or letters that Word thinks it is related to, which are scattered around the document pretty heavily. Attempts to renumber the list have so far proven fruitless, as Word seems to maintain these associations through clipboard copies, etc. Why could this even happen?

    Hi, so I need the user to write a review about an article or book and send it to a DB via PHP but with some basic HTML formatting.. I mean, I have a form , when the user writes the review, the data is sent but without any kind of formatting, If the user want to write in a new line, the text is sent like plain text, I need to get also those new line breaks and simple stuff. I know how to use PHP and DB connection, I just need to know how to get those new line breakes and stuff..

  • How to change the audio output device in Firefox or any other modern browser?

    I'm trying to play music through Ventrilo and currently I use Virtual Audio Cable. The way it works is that in foobar2000 (a music playing program) I set the output device in preferences to Virtual Audio Cable. Then in Ventrilo I log in to another name and set the input device to Virtual Audio Cable. This routes the music through the Virtual Audio Cable and allows me to play the music through Ventrilo. However, I would also like to change the output device for Firefox (or any other browser) or "Plugin Container for Firefix" to Virtual Audio Cable so that I could play music from Pandora or YouTube on to Ventrilo. Unfortunately I could not find an option for this anywhere.

  • Changing the cell range of conditional formatting in LibreOffice Calc

    Is there any way of changing the range of conditional formatting in LibreOffice Calc (version 3.6)? I have a set applied already to a range of cells, but there is no obvious way of changing which cells a given set of conditional formatting is applied to. I either have to copy and paste the formatting, which results in multiple entries in the conditional formatting (which makes it difficult to manage), or delete the entire thing and create a new one every single time I want to change the range of cells.     I have some strange problem, after I've made switch from excel 2007 to excel 2010 I've started to receive duplicates of conditional formatting rules in excel. For example: I have conditional formatting which colors the cell when it detects that cell contains a word "hello". When I copy this cell to other cells (which also contains the same rule) sometimes I receive duplicates. Those duplicates really slows down excel. So my question is: is there any possiblity to disable copy/paste of conditional formatting (I want to copy/paste all content excep conditional formatting, all formulas values and other stuff). P.S. Just to make it clear, I don't know how to reporduce that problem, it occurs sometimes and I work with excel a lot

  • Installed Windows 7 without formatting disk? Possible?

    I've just installed Win7 but I'm little confused. When booting from XP cd, there is an option to format hard drive. After choosing which partition to format, format process takes usually not less than hour (depends on size of partition), but when I clicked on Format when in Windows 7 installation interface, I received some message (I cant remember what was it, but it was not any error message or something like that) and that was it. After that I choose to install Windows 7 and installation began. "Expanding Windows Files" was the longest process of installation. Was that the part when the hard drive was formatted? I don't understand what happened? Is it possible that my hard drive was not formatted but still installation was successful?

    in java if I run : Locale.getDefault().toString() I get zh_tw I am sending this to a joomla site and setting the language like this: $lang = &JFactory::getLanguage(); $lang->setLanguage( $_GET['lang'] ); $lang->load(); however the site requires the following format zh-TW It appears that if it is not in that exact format the language will not change. Is there a function somewhere in java or php that will convert the format for me? I realise that I could write the method myself like this: public static String convertLanguageToJoomlaFormat(String lang) { String[] parts = lang.split("_"); if(parts.length ==2) return parts[0]+"-"+parts[1].toUpperCase(); return lang; } but am unsure if there are any cases where the format changes for particular languages.

  • Weird formatting in Word 2010

    A few months ago while writing a paper, I copied some paragraphs created in one computer to a different computer. I guess the formatting was different. Please see the following image: I noticed that a strange formatting has also been imported. I thought it would go away when I select all and choose a format. But the problem did not go away. Now, when I am trying to finish the paper, the weird formatting still remains. Does anyone have any solution? Also, how to make sure that when we copy something from a file with different Styles, we retain the destination style definitions? EDIT I would prefer a solution where I do not have to re-do the formatting manually.

I am also considering whether to add a rule specific for ADDCOLUMNS / SUMMARIZE because I would like to see the “pairs” of arguments to define a column in the same row or with a special indentation rule (DAX expression for a column is indented in the line following the column name).   • Conditional formatting of duplicate values in Excel

    One of the infrequent pleasures of being a data geek like me is that one does occasionally stumble across little-known yet incredibly useful features in a tool that you use day-in, day-out. Today this happened to me and the feature is Excel’s ability to highlight dupicate rows in a worksheet. Check this out: Notice that I have got some data in my worksheet that contains duplicated values and simply by selecting Conditional Formatting->Highlight Cells Rules->Duplicate Values… Excel will highlight (shown here in red) which rows are duplicated. It seem such a simple thing but when you’re working on a data integration project and the data that is being sent is of, well, let’s say dubious quality features like this are worth their weight in gold. I tweeted about this and it happened to catch a few people’s attention so I figured it might be worth blogging too. Note that I am using Excel 2013 but I happen to know that the feature exists in Excel 2010 and possibly in earlier versions too. Have a great weekend! @Jamiet
