  • Performance problem with Win Server 2008 at vbox on Ubuntu 9.10 Server

    Hey, i´ve got an Ubuntu 9.10 Server and tried to install Windows Server 2008 in a virtual machine. The Problem is, the Server has got 8 cores, but the virtual machine seems to have problems with that. The VM is very slow and not really usable if i set the VM-config to more than one core. Is it set to only one core everything works fine, but thats not a solution because I bought the Server with several cores for a reason... Does anybody know this problem or has got a solution? I feel like I read the entire internet via Google... no solution found. Greetz Diskilla P.S.: I´m from Germany and it´s kind of hard to ask in english :-) I hope I din´t make that much mistakes.

    I would like to setup a machine with Windows Server 2008 R2 Server Core and install following server roles: Active Directory Domain Services Active Directory Federation Services Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services (I'm not sure whether I actually need this one - see note below) I'm obviously going to install Enterprise Edition. Question Can I have an AD administration graphical user interface to manage Active Directory on Server Core machine? I would really like to have it, because I'm not so keen to do stuff using power-shell, because I've never managed AD as well, so a GUI would be much more helpful, because I could at least visualize it a bit better and maybe understand AD structures. Note: I'm setting up development environment machine as well and installing Sharepoint Foundation 2010 on in so it would use this AD machine.

  • Connection to SQL Server 2008 R2 Database Server is SLOW

    The database server is a VM running SQL Server 2008 R2 on top of Windows Server 2012, 24GB RAM allocated and 2TB of disk space. Overall, the database connections are very slow and one thing that stands out is that the connection to the database server via SSMS takes 5-10 seconds. On other much less powerful servers, it takes 1-2 seconds. The VM is technically way more powerful than other machines, but the connection to the server is too slow. So, my guess is the issue is network related, but any clues on where I should be looking? Thanks!

  • How to create SQL Server Express DB from SQL Server DB

    I have a SQL Server 2008 DB. I want to extract SOME tables (and associated schema, constraints, indexes, etc) and create a SQL Server Express DB. It isn't a sync of the target, we stomp on it. We ONLY need to do this in the file system (not across the wire). We are not fond of the synchronization stuff and at this point don't know how to run SSIS. We are a C# shop and a little code is ok. Like using the C# bulk import stuff, but that won't create the schema. Suggestions?

    Copy data from one table to another table is one of the most requested questions on forums, Facebook and Twitter. The question has come in many formats and there are places I have seen developers are using cursor instead of this direct method. Earlier I have written the similar article a few years ago - SQL SERVER – Insert Data From One Table to Another Table – INSERT INTO SELECT – SELECT INTO TABLE. The article has been very popular and I have received many interesting and constructive comments. However there were two specific comments keep on ending up on my mailbox. 1) SQL Server AdventureWorks Samples Database does not have table I used in the example 2) If there is a video tutorial of the same example.   • simple method to install a mail server

    I am looking for a simple way to install a mail server on my Ubuntu server. I would like to be able to receive and send emails though a webmail (e.g. roundcube). I have a domain name. The web server already works without any problem. When I googled "simple method to install mail server on Ubuntu", I arrive on blogs with literally hundreds of steps to install a mail server: A Mailserver on Ubuntu 12.04: Postfix, Dovecot, MySQL Creating a Mail Server on Ubuntu Postfix But, for sure I will make a mistake, if I follow those tutorials, and it will be very very time consuming. Most of the steps look very easy to automate, though. I've try several install methods: sudo apt-get install dovecot-postfix sudo tasksel install mail-server But from there, I have no idea how to add email accounts, and test if it actually works. Do you know if there is an automated way to install a mail server?

  • SQL Server Windows Auth Login not working

    I've had someone set up a domain controller on windows 2008 on one server, and sql server 2008 on another. The domain seems to be working fine, I'm logged on as a domain user on both servers, nothing seems to be a problem there. However, when I try to add a domain user/group to SQL Server Security (e.g. clicking ok from the create login screen) it says it can't find it (even though I've used the search to find the correct account in the first place), when I try to logon (even though I haven't added it yet) it says something about the account being part of an untrusted domain instead of saying I don't have permission to log on. Anyone have any ideas on what is set up incorrectly?

  • Can't connect to Windows Server 2008 shared folders via VPN connection

    I set up an VPN connection on my 2008 server using RRAS. The VPN seems to work fine. I can connect from outside the network. I am also able to establish a remote access connection via the VPN-IP. However, I can't access my shared folders. After connecting to the VPN I can ping the server, but it is not shown in my networks. using \ip or \server-name doesn't work either, cannot be found. I checked ipconfig and this is what I found regarding the VPN: DNS-Suffix: Description: test Physical Adress: DHCP activated: No Auto-Config: Yes IPv4-Adress: 192.168.2.114 Sub: 255.255.255.255 Standard-gateway: DNS-Server: 192.168.0.1 NetBIOS: activated To clarify my IP-situation: server is connected to router with 192.168.0.x, the test-client is in an external network connected to a router with 192.168.1.x, server-client connection is using static ips with 192.168.2.x Can anyone help me with this one? The VPN should be ok since I am able to establish remote access.

  • What Media Extender / Centre Set up should I use?

    I have installed cat6 throughout the house which I use for telephony and network. In my cellar I have a NAS Server, gigabit switch and I want to install a Media Centre to stream my video's, music, photo's and live TV (coax from the aerial to the cellar) over the cat6. Yeah I know I can get stuff on the internet but shared experience of watching TV as a family as it happens is a big plus for live TV. I'm aiming for 1080p. I want different users to be able to watch different channels. Max users = 4. I've played a little with Windows Media Centre, works fine with live TV. Likewise I have XBMC up and running with live TV. The issue I have is what do I put near the TV. I'd like a consistent user interface (grandma and the the other technophobes in the house are continually pestering me on how to use different TVs, change channel, inputs etc.) so a key part of this for me is to make the user experience the same and simple i.e. no keyboards / PCs hanging around the TV. I've just bought a Linksys DMA 2200 to test the Windows Media Centre, but obviously off eBay as they're a dying breed. And with Windows Media Centre removed from Microsoft plans such devices will get rarer. And as for 1080p, think I can forget it with that set up. I have tested XBOX 360, also works but ditto on Microsoft plans for WMC. I was thinking of a WD Live TV to test the XMBC setup. Now to the question. Any advice on Media Centre / Extender setups that will do the job as above and have some degree of futureproofing (building my own with my Raspberry PI is a last resort). I'd like to understand the standards involved in the futureproofing if anyone knows (DNLA, RVU etc.).

  • Issues configuring CUPS print server for Ubuntu Server 9.10

    I have a 9.10 Ubuntu Server installed and I want to make it a print server and am trying to get access to the cups browser admin page from a windows client machine. I installed cups: sudo apt-get install cups then I edited the /etc/cups/cupsd.conf file and tried several different listen cominbations: Listen 192.168.1.109:631 #ip my router gives it3 Listen /var/run/cups/cups.sock #already in conf file Listen fileserver:631 #hostname of server Port 631 #listen for all incoming requests on 631? samba is also installed (which I think is necessary to share the printer out? and finally I added my user to the lpadmin group: sudo adduser tone lpadmin but when I try to navigate any of the following I get 403 forbidden http://fileserver:631/admin http://fileserver:631 http://192.168.1.109:631/admin http://192.168.1.109:631 What did I miss?

  • Enabling Session Directory under Terminal Server Configuration Tool and Server Settings

    Yello, I'm trying to add up a Terminal Server Session Directory client to an already fully functional Session Directory cluster which today runs two clients as well as the server. I've been reading up on both Google, Microsoft KB's as well as old documentation from an earlier employee but to no avail. The step I'm stuck at is when I open up Terminal Server Configuration Tool (tscc.msc), chooses ServerSettings. I know there should be an option saying "Session Directory" on the right hand side along with Active Desktop, Licensing and whatnot, but it's not there. I've logged on to both the other already functional clients and checked the same list and there the Session Directory option sure is both visible as well as working good with the specified information. This picture is the same view that I'm looking at at the moment, but mine is missing the bottom option that says "Session Directory" http://www.inetnj.com/doc/images/TerminalServerConfiguration.jpg Any help would be greatly appriciated.   • Edit Media Center TV Recordings with Windows Live Movie Maker

    Have you ever wanted to take a TV program you’ve recorded in Media Center and remove the commercials or save clips of favorite scenes? Today we’ll take a look at editing WTV and DVR-MS files with Windows Live Movie Maker. Download and Install Windows Live Movie Maker. The download link can be found at the end of the article. WLMM is part of Windows Live Essentials, but you can choose to install only the applications you want. You’ll also want to be sure to uncheck any unwanted settings like settings Bing as default search provider or MSN as your browser home page.   Add your recorded TV file to WLMM by clicking the Add videos and photos button, or by dragging and dropping it onto the storyboard.   You’ll see your video displayed in the Preview window on the left and on the storyboard. Adjust the Zoom Time Scale slider at the lower right to change the level of detail displayed on the storyboard. You may want to start zoomed out and zoom in for more detailed edits.   Removing Commercials or Unwanted Sections Note: Changes and edits made in Windows Live Movie Maker do not change or effect the original video file. To accomplish this, we will makes cuts, or “splits,” and the beginning and end of the section we want to remove, and then we will delete that section from our project. Click and drag the slider bar along the the storyboard to scroll through the video. When you get to the end of a row in on the storyboard, drag the slider down to the beginning of the next row. We’ve found it easiest and most accurate to get close to the end of the commercial break and then use the Play button and the Previous Frame and Next Frame buttons underneath the Preview window to fine tune your cut point. When you find the right place to make your first cut, click the split button on the Edit tab on the ribbon. You will see your video “split” into two sections. Now, repeat the process of scrolling through the storyboard to find the end of the section you wish to cut. When you are at the proper point, click the Split button again.   Now we’ll delete that section by selecting it and pressing the Delete key, selecting remove on the Home tab, or by right clicking on the section and selecting Remove.   Trim Tool This tool allows you to select a portion of the video to keep while trimming away the rest.   Click and drag the sliders in the preview windows to select the area you want to keep. The area outside the sliders will be trimmed away. The area inside is the section that is kept in the movie. You can also adjust the Start and End points manually on the ribbon.   Delete any additional clips you don’t want in the final output. You can also accomplish this by using the Set start point and Set end point buttons. Clicking Set start point will eliminate everything before the start point. Set end point will eliminate everything after the end point. And you’re left with only the clip you want to keep.   Output your Video Select the icon at the top left, then select Save movie. All of these settings will output your movie as a WMV file, but file size and quality will vary by setting. The Burn to DVD option also outputs a WMV file, but then opens Windows DVD Maker and prompts you to create and burn a DVD.   Conclusion WLMM is one of the few applications that can edit WTV files, and it’s the only one we’re aware of that’s free. We should note only WTV and DVR-MS files will appear in the Recorded TV library in Media Center, so if you want to view your WMV output file in WMC you’ll need to add it to the Video or Movie library.   • SQL SERVER – OLEDB – Link Server – Wait Type – Day 23 of 28

    When I decided to start writing about this wait type, the very first question that came to my mind was, “What does ‘OLEDB’ stand for?” A quick search on Wikipedia tells me that OLEDB means Object Linking and Embedding Database. (How many of you knew this?) Anyway, I found it very interesting that this wait type was in one of the top 10 wait types in many of the systems I have come across in my performance tuning experience. Books On-Line: ????OLEDB occurs when SQL Server calls the SQL Server Native Client OLE DB Provider. This wait type is not used for synchronization. Instead, it indicates the duration of calls to the OLE DB provider. OLEDB Explanation: This wait type primarily happens when Link Server or Remove Query has been executed. The most common case wherein this wait type is visible is during the execution of Linked Server. When SQL Server is retrieving data from the remote server, it uses OLEDB API to retrieve the data. It is possible that the remote system is not quick enough or the connection between them is not fast enough, leading SQL Server to wait for the result’s return from the remote (or external) server. This is the time OLEDB wait type occurs. Reducing OLEDB wait: Check the Link Server configuration. Checking Disk-Related Perfmon Counters Average Disk sec/Read (Consistent higher value than 4-8 millisecond is not good) Average Disk sec/Write (Consistent higher value than 4-8 millisecond is not good) Average Disk Read/Write Queue Length (Consistent higher value than benchmark is not good) At this point in time, I am not able to think of any more ways on reducing this wait type.     I think I have finally gotten back my faith in social media. If you are following my blog I am sure you are aware of my views on social media – SQLAuthority News – Social Media Confusion – Twitter, FaceBook, LinkedIn and Me. I was not happy about how social media was evolving. Whenever I go to Twitter, LinkedIn or Facebook, I noticed the same updates everywhere. I just thought I was wasting my time doing the same thing everywhere. I strongly believe that there is no dictator on internet. Nobody has authority over others, everybody can express their ideas as long as it is not violating others privacy and it is not morally wrong. I have decided that instead of trying to improve the world, I should change myself and adjust my needs. Here are few things I have done to relieve my social media confusion. Twitter I un-followed people who were taking up my time with too many updates. I un-followed people who hardly updated at all. I did not follow anybody else’s list, as I have no control over who other people follow. I follow not only serious SQL people but some fun stuff as well. I removed all my friends who were on Facebook and repeating the same updates on Twitter. I engage with them on Facebook. I followed people who are very conversational on Twitter. I let anybody follow me. I update all my blog posts through at least five tweets online. I decided to re-tweet at least five of my favorite tweets of the day, this way I force myself to remain active in the community. Follow me on Twitter! LinkedIn I updated my career and professional info on LinkedIn. I keep my LinkedIn profile updated with my latest jobs and career news. I let anybody connect with me on LinkedIn. I specify my email address in my profile, keeping it easy for those who want to add me. I read all the profile related updates of my connections – it is very valuable to know who is where and what changes are happening. I do not add my personal tweets or comments in LinkedIn profile. I just keep it professional. Link with me at LinkedIn Facebook I use Facebook only for personal friends. I visit all of my friends at regular intervals and make sure that they are really my friends. I often remove my friends from my Twitter list who are sending duplicate updates. I upload my family photos as well as family updates on Facebook, making sure that only my approved friends are able to read my updates. I keep my Facebook very personal and I often chat with my friends on Facebook chat. I am no longer confused about social media and I think I am using it appropriately. As I said, one cannot decide for others how to use social media, you can only decide for yourself. I have finally found my peace with social media.
