• Does SpinRite do what it claims to do?

  I don't have any real (i.e. professional) experience with Steve Gibson's SpinRite so I'd like to put this to the SF community. Does SpinRite actually do what it claims? Is it a good product to use? With a proper backup solution and RAID fault tolerance, I've never found need for it, but I'm curious. There seems to be some conflicting messages regarding it, and no hard data to be found either way. On one hand, I've heard many home users claim it helped them, but I've heard home users say a lot of things -- most of the time they don't have the knowledge or experience to accurately describe what really happened. On the other hand, Steve's own description and documentation don't give me a warm fuzzy about it either. So what is the truth of the matter? Would you use it?

  Trying to get casperjs running on Ubuntu 12.04. After installing it when I run I get: 09:20 $ ll /usr/local/bin/casperjs lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 26 Nov 6 16:49 /usr/local/bin/casperjs -> /opt/casperjs/bin/casperjs 09:20 $ /usr/bin/env python --version Python 2.7.3 09:20 $ cat /opt/casperjs/bin/casperjs | head -4 #!/usr/bin/env python import os import sys 09:20 $ casperjs : No such file or directory 09: 22 $ python Python 2.7.3 (default, Sep 26 2013, 20:03:06) [GCC 4.6.3] on linux2 So Python is present and runnable, casperjs is pointing to the right place and it is a python script. But when I run it I get "No such file". I can fix it by changing the first line of the casperjs python file from: #!/usr/bin/env python to: #!/usr/bin/python Result: $ casperjs --version 1.1.0-DEV I managed to fix it, but I'm wondering why it didn't work with #!/usr/bin/env python, since that seems to be a normal interpreter line. Do I have something configured wrong?   My company publishes sites on a somewhat convoluted domain structure, and we're having trouble getting accurate numbers in Analytics when we have multiple trackers on the page. We publish under two brands (A, B). • Puppet: how to use data from a MySQL table in Puppet 3.0 templates?

  I have some data whose source-of-truth is in a MySQL database, size is expected to max out at the some-thousands-rows range (in a worst-case scenario) and I'd like to use puppet to configure files on some servers with that data (mostly iterating through those rows in a template). I'm currently using Puppet 3.0.x, and I cannot change the fact that MySQL will be the authoritative source for that data. Please note, data comes from external sources and not from puppet or from the managed nodes. What possible approaches are there? Which one would you recommend? Would External Node Classifiers be useful here? My "last resort" would be regularly dumping the table to a YAML file and reading that through Hiera to a Puppet template, or to directly dump the table in one or more pre-formatted text file(s) ready to be copied to the nodes. There is an unanswered question on SF about system users but the fundamental issue is probably similar to mine - he's trying to get data out of MySQL.

• Should a sysadmin contractor charge overtime for off-peak hours?

  This is not necessarily a server-related question, but more of a system admin question that I think would related to many on SF. I'm doing Sysadmin/IT consulting for a small company. I only work about 3 days a week for them on average. If a server goes down or something like that during off hours (nights, weekends, 3am, etc) and they need it fixed during those time periods, should I be charging overtime for that? I would I not be justified in charging overtime until I've logged 40 hours for the week? Perhaps calling it overtime isn't the best name. I guess maybe its better to call it an off-peak hourly rate. Anyways I just was curious what other consultants did in these circumstances.

  I have some basic iptable rules set up now for my vps. Just block everything except some default ports, 80,21,22,443. I do get brute forced a lot. I have heard that iptables is very powerful but I have not seen many use cases. Can you give me an example of a(some) rule(s) you always use and give a small example why.   hi,.. Can somebody help in understanding how Lun Provisioning is done in clariion based on client requirement. Say, a client needs one 50 GB space on the host( for application) ,two -350 GBs ( for DB and stuff) on the same host and i have 4 raid groups with space of 200 GB in one 50 GB in second and 400 GB and 400GB in rest two all having 5 disks. And , I 'm using Raid 5 only. How do i provision keeping performance in mind( so that performance hit is not there)?..And i need to understand the concept of meta head as well. Please help me by elaborating the above scenario..I am learning to provision storage in non productive environment( b'fore going ahead and working on client prod server) and i have been learning a lot from SF ...I request the seniors here to help me understand it better. • Configuring port forwarding on Fortigate 50B

  I can't for the life of me get port forwarding to work on my Fortigate 50B. I followed the setup tips described on this other SF thread with no success. The only specific difference I can find is we are using load balancing through 2 different internet uplinks. Is there any caveat specific to this scenario that I might be missing? If you need any specific additional information please ask because I think I have checked everything: Virtual IP mapping on external interface wan1 ACCEPT all from any on wan1 to the corresponding server on internal No seeming offending firewall rules (any specific pitfalls that I might want to check for?)

• 'server was unable to allocate from the system nonpaged pool' error

  Currently users at my company are unable to access their home folder (or any folder on our domain controller). I am working remotely and cant physically access the machine until tomorrow morning, but I can access it with RDC. When I attempt to ping other machines on our network from the machine in question (connected with RDC), I immediately get the error PING: transmit failed. error code 1450. Event Viewer is full of 2019 errors: The server was unable to allocate from the system nonpaged pool because the pool was empty Does anyone have experience with this specific issue? I have found some info with Google, but would like to hear what the pros at SF have top say. This is a Windows 2000 server.

• Rsync plugin to many local wordpress installs via script or cli

  I am maintaining a large number of wordpress installs on a production server, and we are looking to deploy InfiniteWP for managing these installs. I am looking for a way to script the distribution of the plugin folder to all of these installs. On server wp-prod, all sites are stored in /srv//site/ The plugin needs to be copied from ~/iws-plugin to /srv//site/wp-content/plugins/ Here's some pseudo code to explain what I need to do: array dirs = <all folders in /srv> for each d in dirs if exits "/srv/d/site/wp-content/plugins" rsync -avzh --log-file=~/d.log ~/plugin_base_folder /srv/d/site/wp-content/plugins/ else touch d.log echo 'plugin folder for "d" not found' >> ~/d.log end end I just don't know how to make it happen from the cli or via bash. I can (and will) tinker with a bash or ruby script on my test server, but I'm thinking the command-line-fu here on SF is strong enough to handle this issue much more quickly than I can hack together a solution. • Handling window resize with arbitrary aspect ratios

  I'm currently making a 2D game using SFML. I want the aspect ratio to be maintained when the user resizes the window. I also want the game to work with any arbitrary aspect ratio (like any media player would). • Finding the shorter turning direction towards a target

• System time wrong after running ntpdate because DST ignored

  When I run ntpdate, my system clock displays the time as an hour behind what it should be. I know that ntpdate does everything in UTC, so I'm guessing there's a timezone setting wrong and it's ignoring Daylight Savings Time, but I can't figure it out. Here's what I've done so far: ln -sf /usr/share/zoneinfo/EST /etc/localtime to set the timezone Set UTC=true in /etc/sysconfig/clock so that DST will be automatically applied date -s hh:mm::ss to set system clock correctly hwclock -systohc --utc to set the hardware clock correctly At this point date and hwclock both display the correct time. But if I then run ntpdate 0.us.pool.ntp.org, the date output is an hour behind what it should be. I've looked at a dozen tutorials and can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Does anyone have any ideas?

• how to prevent log output from PostgreSQL stored procedure ?

  I am running a number of PostgreSQL scripts that used to produce excessive log output. I managed to reduce most of the output to an acceptable amount by passing --quiet as parameter to the psql command line client and adding SET client_min_messages='warning'; to the beginning of my SQL scripts. This works fine for most basic statements like SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, etc.) However, when I call a stored function in a script using e.g. SELECT my_func(my_args);, there is still log output similar to my_func (omitted a long with many '-' here because SF thinks that's a headline) (1 row) The output is useless; it only makes me having to scroll back up a long way after the script has run and also makes it much harder than necessary to spot any relevant error output. How can I get rid of it ?

• How can I restrict a group to reading only two particular folders with Windows Server?

  I have a group of users on Windows Server 2003 who need to be able to read the contents of two directories but not be able to access anything else on the server (including read-only access). One of the directories is K:\projectFour\config — and the other is similarly formatted — so it would be okay for group members to be able to list the contents of K:\ and K:\projectFour\ but not actually read anything in those directories. I've found several resources via SF/Google, including how to restrict individual folders/drives and how to allow users to only run specific executables, but that information ultimately didn't solve my issue. Sorry if this is a really simple thing to do, I'm usually a developer and don't know the first thing about servers or group policies. Finally, I should mention that this isn't a fully concrete question, as it will be implemented eventually but I don't personally have a copy of Windows Server 2003 to test with right now.

• mod-rewrite: what's wrong with this simple rewrite to redirect to a subdirectory?

  the root directory http: // www .mydomain .com (SF won't let me post hyperlinks - rep is too low) has a catchall index.php page in it, and an .htaccess file. Within this root directoy I have a wordpress/ directory which contains (suprise surprise) a wordpress installation. My goal is that when the user types in http: // www .mydomain .com they are instead taken to http: // www .mydomain .com/wordpress Here is my rewrite rule: RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/wordpress RewriteRule ^/(.*)$ http://%{SERVER_NAME}/wordpress/$1 [L] At the moment it appears to do nothing - it still loads index.php within the root directory. What should my rewrite rule be (I'm assuming the one I'm using is wrong)?

  I'm trying to create a Self-Signed Certificate in IIS 7 (Win7 Ultimate x64), and getting the following error: I found this question on SF, which says I should set permissions on the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys folder to allow rights - but that's also not working. Firstly, note that "Everyone" has "Full Control" rights: And when I try to delete and recreate rights, look what comes up: I am logged in as a user with admin privileges, and I've even tried running Explorer with Admin rights... nothing seems to help. What do I do to get this right?

• Why does PsExec hang after successfully running a powershell script?

  The script is fairly straight forward. Simply tries to start a bunch of windows services. Execution locally works fine when on the target machine. The script is actually executing fine as well when done via PsExec, it just never returns until I hit the "enter" key on my CMD prompt. This is a problem, because this is being called from TeamCity, and it makes the Agent hang waiting for PsExec to return. I've tried the following: Adding an exit and exit 0 at the end of the Powershell script Adding a < NUL to the end of the PsExec call, per the answer in this SF question Adding a > stdout redirect This is how I am actually calling psexec: psexec \\target -u domain\username -p password powershell c:\path\script.ps1 No matter what I do, it hangs until I the locally on the cmd prompt. After I hit enter, I get the message: powershell exited on target with error code 0.

• CentOS 6.5 server time zone won't persist?

  I'm setting my timezone like so: ln -sf /usr/share/zoneinfo/Europe/London /etc/localtime It works fine, I check with date and all is good. But then a few days later I'll realise it's reset itself to CEST, so 9am becomes 10am, etc. The server is located in Paris, in the CEST time zone. But I should be able to use any zone I want, surely? I (and most of my users) am based in the UK, so I want to operate on that timezone. I just did a yum update and noticed it wanted to update tzdata. That had the effect of changing from BST to CEST, but I don't think it's the only thing that triggers the change, as I'm sure it's gone wrong on days where I've done no such update. I could be wrong though. What's the trick to set a timezone permanently? Thanks

• 'Buy the app' landing page implementations

  My site (using Django) has an app that I'm trying to push - I currently have a piece of middleware that redirects the user to a page advertising the app if they're accessing the page on the iPhone, then setting a cookie so that the user isn't bugged by the message every time they visit the site. This works fine, however checking the page with the mobile Googlebot checker shows that the Googlebot gets stuck in the redirect (since it doesn't store cookies) and therefore won't index the proper content. So, I'm trying to think of an alternative implementation that won't hurt the site's Google ranking and won't have any other adverse effects. I've considered a couple of options: Redirect (the current solution), but don't redirect if the user agent matches the Googlebot's UA string. This would be ideal, however I'm not sure if Google like their bot being treated differently from other users, and I'm afraid the site's ranking may be somehow penalised if I go ahead with this. Use a Javascript popup instead of a redirect. This would make sure the Googlebot finds the content it needs, however I envision this approach causing compatibility issues with the myriad mobile devices/browsers out there, and may affect the page load time. How valid are these options? And is there a better option for implementing this feature out there? I've tried researching this topic but surprisingly can't find any reputable-looking blog posts that explore this topic. EDIT: I posted this on SF because it seemed unsuitable for SO, but if there's another site that would be better for this issue then I'd be happy to move the question elsewhere.
