  I set up an AdWords campaign for website following the instructions for Google AdWords ValueTrack. One of the things that it is supposed to be able to do is pass the keyword as a URL parameter using the code {keyword} in the URL. I set it up for integration with Google Analytics such the landing URLs would look like: http://example.com/landing.html?utm_source=adwords&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=%7Bkeyword%7D&utm_content=my_content&utm_campaign=my_page where {keyword} is in the utm_term parameter. Hower, this keyword substitution isn't happening. Why?

• How can I run Ubuntu if it's not on my main drive?

  I have a 120GB SSD and a 750GB HDD in my computer. My SSD has Windows 7 installed and my HDD has Windows 8 installed. When I boot my computer normally, I boot it to my SSD. I went through the installation process, putting Ubuntu on a separate partition on my HDD. When I restarted my computer, it didn't give me an option to boot to Ubuntu. If it helps, I believe I used ext4 and only set it to '/'. If I want to make Ubuntu bootable from my computer, how would I go about doing that?

• Google Analytics: How long does it take users to trigger an event

  I implemented Google Analytics event tracking on my currency conversion website. The typical user flow is: User lands on a page about two currencies. User enters an amount to be converted. The site shows the user the value in the other currency. The JavaScript sends Google Analytics an "converted" event when the currency conversion is done. Because most of the sessions on my site are single page, the event tracking is very important to me to be able to know if users find my page useful. I'm looking for a way to be able to figure out how long it typically takes users to enter a value in the form. I expect that this data would form a bell curve with around a specific amount of time after page load. If I can't get a graph, I could make do with a median value. I would like to be able to use this as a core metric around usability testing. Is there a way to get this information out of Google Analytics?

• Questions to ask to ensure someone understands programming? (and iOS)

  So, I've been tutoring my friend for 2 years. Most people learn programming on their own in 3-6 months, (sans algorithms). It's confusing 'cause he'll run anywhere I tell him to, understands how to read C and C++ honestly better than the average college student, and he'll modify and repeat anything I do... but for the love of god he doesn't move on to new things and he still has test anxiety. I've recently realized he's copied and toyed with existing, but not once gained an understanding of why. I was under the impression he was learning fast because he could write it, but when you say "Make a function that takes an NSString" and he says "How?" and I say "The same way you make ANY function that takes any parameter, NSString is just a type like int" and all I hear is "No, it's an NSString, it's a special thing." and we get into an arguing match 'cause I'm like "It's just a class like any other class, you've used them for months now" and blah... I've subconsciously avoided comprehension questions because of this. Anyway, if you have him copy a program and say "Just initialize it" "Where?" "I don't care, didLoad or initWithCoder or Awake from nib, anywhere it gets initialized" and "No, it has to be exactly where you had it!" "No it doesn't!" I'm sick of this, but he won't give up. So I'm done avoiding these yelling matches and becoming a sadist from now on. I would like some help in finding questions to ask him that force him to understand what he's doing. I'd like some help and any resources I can find. CQuestions looked like a good site, but now I need some iPhone stuff. For example: *What do properties do? How are they changed? How do you change the name of the getter? *Why are Booleans inefficent? What advantage does int have over a boolean and how does the bit-shift operator help? *What does Copy do to a string? *What's the difference between a view controller and a uiview? *Write a program from memory that displays blah on screen, and flashes each view one by one. From beginner up to intermediate, hobbyist with some algebra at most. I'm just looking for resources to work with. I left in backstory so you know to "twist" the questions so he doesn't know he's supposed to init a variable here or there, but has to figure it out, and learn why it goes "here" or that "anywhere is fine as long as it's". Sample programs, anything. I'm relatively open about this because, being a programmer, I seriously doubt he's the only one who has this issue. I'd like to know how others have overcome similar. What made things "click"? for you? Did you have a hard time finding answers on Google, and how did you learn a better way to find what you were looking for? (He's so exact, he'll search for how to write a checkers program with color X and Y inside a uiview, as his search string, instead of breaking it up into components, I need help with that too, and believe it is related). This type of problem has to remind one of us of someone they know. So, Exercises to force them to think? Ways we overcame this thing in the past? I greatly appreciate any help.

• Easy way to identify pages which are index, but not linked to on my site

  I'm just wondering if there is an easy way to find out what pages Google has indexed, that are not directly linked on my site, for example: www.mysite.com/skype.html originally had a link in my site menu, but this link was removed. The page is still available when the url is typed directly, but there is no direct link to it. I don't want Google indexing this page any more and want to put a 'disallow' in my robots.txt.

• DB Object passing between classes singleton, static or other?

  So I'm designing a reporting system at work it's my first project written OOP and I'm stuck on the design choice for the DB class. Obviously I only want to create one instance of the DB class per-session/user and then pass it to each of the classes that need it. What I don't know it what's best practice for implementing this. • Objective-C++ Memory Problem

  Hello, I'm having memory woes. I've got a C++ Library (Equalizer from Eyescale) and they use the Traversal Visitor Pattern to allow you to add new functionality to their classes. I've finally figured out how it works, and I've got a Visitor that just returns the properties from one of the objects. (since I don't know how they're allocated). so. My little code does this: VisitorResult AGLContextVisitor::visit( Channel* channel ) { // Search through Nodes, Pipes until we get to the right window. // Add some code to make sure we find the right one? // Not executing the following code as C++ in gdb? eq::Window* w = channel->getWindow(); OSWindow* osw = w->getOSWindow(); AGLWindow* aw = (AGLWindow *)osw; AGLContext agl_ctx = aw->getAGLContext(); this->setContext(agl_ctx); return TRAVERSE_PRUNE; } So here's the problem. eq::Window* w = channel->getWindow(); (gdb) print w 0x0 BUT If I do this: (gdb) set objc-non-blocking-mode off (gdb) print w=channel->getWindow() 0x300effb9 // an honest memory location, and sets w as verified in the Debugger window of XCode. It does the same thing for osw. I don't get it. Why would something work in (gdb) but not in the code? The file is completely a cpp file, but it seems to be running in objc++, since I need to turn blocking off. Help!? I feel like I'm missing some memory-management basic thing here, either with C++ or Obj-C. [edit] channel-getWindow() is supposed to do this: /** @return the parent window. @version 1.0 */ Window* getWindow() { return _window; } The code also executes fine if I run it from a C++-only application. [edit] No... I tried creating a simple stand-alone program since I was tired of running it as a plugin. Messy to debug. And no, it doesn't run in the C++ program either. Granted, the objects are different but neither of them contain the key @"type" and they both should throw errors, yet the Osirix code Tests for both conditions: if ([[item valueForKey:@"type"] isEqualToString:@"Series"]) { ... } if ([[item valueForKey:@"type"] isEqualToString:@"Study"]) { ... } And throws no errors. Yet when I load an NSManagedObject of the same exact model and entity @"Series" it throws the 'no key value' when passed into the conditions above. Am I missing something? Both the superentity and subentities of itemSeries and itemStudy are nil so they don't inherit from something that has KVC @"type". I'm totally at a loss as to explain what is going on. --- EDIT --- I know no one can explain what is going on... but maybe where to start looking? How would itemStudy have the extra KVC @"type" that doesn't show up in it's property list? Thank you for your assistance, -Stephen

  Hello, This one is real simple, run this Silverlight4 example with the ContentType property commented out and you'll get back a response from from my service in xml. Now uncomment the property and run it and you'll get an exception similar to this one. System.Net.ProtocolViolationException occurred Message=A request with this method cannot have a request body. StackTrace: at System.Net.Browser.AsyncHelper.BeginOnUI(SendOrPostCallback beginMethod, Object state) at System.Net.Browser.ClientHttpWebRequest.EndGetResponse(IAsyncResult asyncResult) at com.patten.silverlight.ViewModels.WebRequestLiteViewModel.<MakeCall>b__0(IAsyncResult cb) InnerException: What I am trying to accomplish is just pulling down some JSON formatted data from my wcf endpoint. Can this really be this hard, or is it another classic example of just overlooking something simple.   I was looking into google.com's Net activity in firebug just because I was curious and noticed a request was returning "204 No Content." It turns out that a 204 No Content "is primarily intended to allow input for actions to take place without causing a change to the user agent's active document view, although any new or updated metainformation SHOULD be applied to the document currently in the user agent's active view." Whatever. I've looked into the JS source code and saw that "generate_204" is requested like this: (new Image).src="http://clients1.google.com/generate_204" No variable declaration/assignment at all. My first idea is that it was being used to track if Javascript is enabled. But the "(new Image).src='...'" call is called from a dynamically loaded external JS file anyway, so that would be pointless. Anyone have any ideas as to what the point could be? UPDATE "/generate_204" appears to be available on many google services/servers (e.g., maps.google.com/generate_204, maps.gstatic.com/generate_204, etc...). You can take advantage of this by pre-fetching the generate_204 pages for each google-owned service your web app may use. • How to use wkhtmltopdf.exe in ASP.net

  After 10 hours and trying 4 other HTML to PDF tools I'm about ready to explode. wkhtmltopdf sounds like an excellent solution...the problem is that I can't execute a process with enough permissions from asp.net so... Process.Start("wkhtmltopdf.exe","http://www.google.com google.pdf"); starts but doesn't do anything. Is there an easy way to either: -a) allow asp.net to start processes (that can actually do something) or -b) compile/wrap/whatever wkhtmltopdf.exe into somthing I can use from C# like this: WkHtmlToPdf.Save("http://www.google.com", "google.pdf");

• Problem printing google maps printing and using 'page-break-before' in IE8

  Hi, I'm having an annoying problem trying to get an html page with a google map on it to print correctly, I have a google map with an <h2> above it all wrapped in a div and the div is set to 'page-break-before:always;' in the css so that the map and its heading always sits on a new page. The problem is that in IE8 only i can always see a large portion of the map rendered on the previous page when printed, also the part of the map that is visible on the previous page is that which is outside the visible bounds of the map. • Change an input's HTML5 placeholder color with CSS

  Chrome supports the placeholder attribute on input[type=text] elements (others probably do too). But the following CSS doesn't do diddly squat: <style> input[placeholder], [placeholder], *[placeholder] { color:red !important; } </style> <input type="text" placeholder="Value" /> "Value" will still be grey (er, gray. whatever) instead of red. Is there are way to change the color of the placeholder text? p.s. I'm already using the jQuery placeholder plugin for the browsers that don't support the placeholder attribute natively.

  I can't, for the life of me, figure out how to change grey highlight color in the screenshot below to something that will make the text a little more legible. Does anyone know what the "Display Item" name is that I need to change? To get to the "theme editor" select Tools = Options = Environment = Fonts and Colors. I can't find what to edit.   Background: I couldn't find any decent free HTML to PDF conversion utilities in C#. There are 100s of them for PHP with extensive documentation, support, and CSS support. So I am using html2ps and html2pdf (php). I have PHP 5.2 installed on IIS7 and its working beautifully to create PDFs. • How to determine if "html" or "body" scrolls the window.

However, when the height of the document is the same or less than the window the method above will not work because scrollTop() will always be equal to 0. This becomes a problem if the DOM is updated and the height of the document grows beyond the height of the window after the code runs. Also, I generally don't wait until document.ready to set up my javascript handlers (this generally works). I could append a tall div to the body temporarily to force the method above to work BUT that would required the document to be ready in IE (you can't add a node to the body element before the tag is closed). For more reading on the document.ready "anti-pattern" topic read this. So, I'd love to find a solution that finds the scrollable element even when the document is short. Any ideas?
