  • Post 12.04 Update, stuck on splash screen

    I updated to 12.04 a couple of weeks ago and I haven't started up Ubuntu until now. On start up the computer gets stuck on the splash screen. I am a beginner in all of this linux mechanics. I've seen many people post about relatively the same problem but I have a hard time following. I am using Wubi and running it along side Windows Starter on a Toshiba netbook.   • No sound through hdmi to TV

    I have a Toshiba Satellite Laptop Model P745-S4102 with Intel integrated graphics and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS installed recently. When I connect my HDMI TV to it I only get video through it and no audio. In the System Settings - Sound, there is no option to select HDMI as the output. I read other threads in this site and it seems like at least guys had HDMI option but no sound. I don't even get that. Please help!!

    Installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a hard drive by itself (no windows). All updates are up to date. Everything`works fine except when I plug in a 320 gig Toshiba external hard drive....it is not recognized. When I plug in an 8 gig flash drive it is recognized no problem. What do I mean by "not recognized"? I mean: how do you know it was not recognized. You can check the command "cat /proc/partitions" in a terminal with and without the hdd attached. If you see some difference, it's ok. If the difference is something like "sda1" (sd+letter+number) then you have partition on it, maybe it can't be handled in Ubuntu (no filesystem on it or so). If there is only "sda" in the difference for example (sd+letter, but no number after it) then the drive itself is detected, just no partition is created on it. Also you can check out the messages of the kernel, with the "dmesg" command in the terminal. If there is no disk/partition/anything in /proc/partitions, there can be an USB level problem, you can issue command "lsusb" as it was suggested before my answer. It's really matter of what do you mean about "not recognized". @Marco Ceppi @Oli @Pitto By "not recognized" I meant that when I plug in a 8 gig flash drive an icon immediately appears on the desktop imdicating that there is a flash drive plugged in and I can click on it and view the files on the flash drive.   • How do I get keyboard to write hiragana instead of katakana?

    I added the Japanese Layout in Keyboard preferences, however all the layouts look like being in katakana. I suspect that the key that is left of number 1 (above Tab and under Esc) could be the one to switch from katakana to hiragana however I don't have that key in my keyboard and my other Toshiba laptop does not have it either. I really don't know what to do, I simply want to be able to write in hiragana in Ubuntu. Thanks

  • Ubuntu 14.04 hangs at purple screen after it asks for my password

    I have installed Ubuntu 14.04LTS onto a Toshiba Tecra M5. The install appears to have been successful but when it says "install complete restart your computer" the computer does not restart. It just sits there, then after a forced shut down Ubuntu appears to start, icons appear in the top right hand corner of the screen but after it asks for my password it just hangs up on the purple screen. Can anyone help ?

  • Why is Ubuntu 12.04 taking very long to start and run programs?

    I have a Toshiba laptop with 2.8 gb of ram, 1.87x2 GHz processor, and Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit on it as a partition installed with wubi. It takes 5-10 mins to start up, and opening any program (such as Chromium, Chrome, Skype, Firefox, Thundermail, etc) takes over half a minute. I stopped using Unity because my graphic card couldn't handle it and swapped over to Cinnamon. It's a little better, but everything is still really really slow. Any suggestions/solutions?

    I have an integrated Intel 945GM in a Toshiba laptop. Previously the graphics driver was reported correctly, but at some point it has changed. I've noticed general poor performance and though it should meet minimum requirements for unity 3d is using unity 2d. Under the details panel in system settings it is now reporting Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 0x300). any help would be appreciated. I have searched google for hours trying to find an answer.

It goes to grub command prompt. When on initial screen it briefly shows error message as failed to open /efi/Microsoft/boot/grubx64. Please advise.   • I cannot format my PC

    I have a Toshiba Satellite(1) l505 6gb RAM, 6.00GB hard disk.Initially I have problem with another satellite(2) I had (mother board problem). I took my Laptop to a technician and cost a lot of money (almost as much as buying new one). So, since I have HDD problems with the first one(1) I decided to use the hard disk of the other one(2). I formatted the HDD and erased the partitions it had into 1 partition (or no partition). The problem is that when I try to format with the SO CD, in the screen, where I have to decide in which partition I want to install the SO, the only one option I have says "unallocated partition and I receive this message "Windows cannot install the SO in this partition, run files do not existed or maybe corrupted" When I erased the disk with Parted Magic, Did I erased any files needed for running the installing disk? I don't know. Is it possible to fixed or reinstate the disk to install the OS? By the way, I checked the disk physical health with Parted Magic, and it is OK. One more thing when I erased the disc to 0, I used the safety option offered by the Parted Magic.Need help please.

    I hope someone can follow this and I'll explain as best I can. I'm trying to forward all traffic from port 6999 on x.x.x.224, through an ssh tunnel, and onto port 7000 on x.x.x.218. Here is some ASCII art: |browser|-----|Squid on x.x.x.224|------|ssh tunnel|------<satellite link>-----|Squid on x.x.x.218|-----|www| 3128 6999 7000 80 When I remove the ssh tunnel, everything works fine. The idea is to turn off encryption on the ssh tunnel (to save bandwidth) and turn on maximum compression (to save more bandwidth). This is because it's a satellite link. Here's the ssh tunnel I've been using: ssh -C -f -C -o CompressionLevel=9 -o Cipher=none [email protected] -L 7000:172.16.1.224:6999 -N The trouble is, I don't know how to get data from Squid on x.x.x.224 into the ssh tunnel? Am I going about this the wrong way? Should I create an ssh tunnel on x.x.x.218? I use iptables to stop squid on x.x.x.224 from reading port 80, but to feed from port 6999 instead (i.e. via the ssh tunnel). Do I need another iptables rule? Any comments greatly appreciated.   • Acronis Disk Director AFTER Clone Disk error: PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable

    Used Acronis Disk Director on my desktop, plugged in the laptop drive 240GB SSD (USB) and the new hard drive 500GB SSD (usb) and the copy seemed to be fine. I didnt see any error messages but I didnt stare at it for 3 hours either. The clone disk of course the Toshiba hidden restore partition, the primary partition C drive and the active (boot?) partition and yes, did check box for copy NT signature. The computer boots up fine most of the time, but it seems that when the computer goes to sleep (i believe its sleep, hard to do much testing during school) or hibernate or reboot it will sometimes display this message: Intel(R) Boot Agent GE v1.3.52 Copyright (C) 1997-2010, Intel Corporation PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel Boot Agent Insert system disk in drive. Press any key when ready... Of course any key does nothing but repeat a similar method. However, if I press the power button on the laptop (Toshiba Portege R705, Win 7 Pro 64-bit) it puts computer into hibernate. After hibernating I press power button again and it comes out of hibernation without any odd messages or problems described above... so apparently that is my TEMP fix. Another recent issue I noticed is on occasion when creating a new folder or modifying something in the system variables, other random areas I will get a message: "The Stub received bad data" and simply retry the task and it works. Perhaps these two issues are linked.

  • Laptop hangs on POST and does not finish except on rare occasions

    I have an old Toshiba Satellite A100 laptop that hangs on POST when I try to start it. On rare occasions it does finish the POST and boots Windows successfully, but most times it just finishes it partially and continues to hang. I can enter the BIOS though when it has frozen, but I have to open the DVD-drive first for some reason. The keyboard is not quite right either, and I can't navigate the BIOS properly because the arrow keys doesn't work. I tried an external keyboard, but the problem persisted. I have tried to remove the memory, hard drive, and battery to see if any of these were the problem, but it did not solve it. The one logical thing left to do would be to remove the CMOS battery, but the "brilliant" engineers at Toshiba have place it such that a complete disassembly of the machine is necessary. What this all boils down to is basically the question of whether I can "save" this machine and get it to boot properly, or if I should just send it off to recycling. I suspect it might need costly repairs, but I can't bring myself to throw it away before I have made sure it's completely dead.
