• Framework Folders and Duplicate File Names

  I have been working with Framework folders a little bit in the past few days and found one unexpected behavior that is different from Contribution Folders (Folders_g). If you try and check a file into a Framework Folder that already exists in the folder it will allow it and rename the file for you. In Folders_g this would have generated an error and prevented you from checking in the file. A quick check of the Framework Folder configuration settings in the Application Administrator’s Guide for Content Server does not show a configuration parameter to control this. I'm still thinking about this and not sure if I like this new behavior or not. I guess from a user perspective this more closely aligns Framework Folders to how Windows handle duplicate file names, but if you are migrating from Folders_g and expect a duplicate file name to be rejected, this might cause you some problems.

  I've worked out how to get my linux based Netbeans PHP development machine to behave much like what happens when you create a new ASP.Net project in Visual Studio. Firstly create multiple PHP project in Netbeans,say for example mysite1 and mysite2. Next edit the apache2/sites-enabled/000-default file and add two virtualhost sections as below <VirtualHost 127.0.1.1> ServerName mysite1.localhost DocumentRoot /var/www/mysite1/ </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost 127.0.2.1> ServerName mysite2.localhost DocumentRoot /var/www/mysite2/ </VirtualHost> For each site you add, pick a different ip address similar to the above where I use the third octet to increment, next edit the etc/hosts file and add the following two lines 127.0.1.1 mysite1.localhost 127.0.2.1 mysite2.localhost Then in Netbeans, go to File->Project Properties click on 'Run Configuration' and set 'Project Url' to http://mysite1.localhost for the first project and http://mysite2.localhost for the second project. That will give you a PHP development box which develops multiple PHP projects similar to how a Visual Studio Windows based box handles multiple ASP.Net sites. Hope this helps someone :)

The main piece of code i need explaining is below: Why and when should i be declaring variables inside the interface statement and why do they have the same variable with _ and then the same one as a property. • Meet Windows Azure Sweden &amp; SWAG Sommeravslutning

  The Meet Windows Azure event last week saw some great announcements about the current and future developments on the Windows Azure platform. Microsoft Sweden will be hosting an event at their offices that will run through these releases and demo some of the new technologies. It will be a great chance to see the new capabilities in action, and chat to Microsoft Evangelists, MVPs and other developers about the future of the platform. • grub rescue error, [on hold]

  I was trying to install a Linux OS to an partition alongside Windows 8 and Ubuntu, but I got confused and I just canceled the installation. Then I booted into Windows 8 and deleted the 20GB partition that I created. When I restarted the computer I got stuck at the following error message: error: no such partition grub rescue> I don't know what to do. I do not want to lose any data. Please help! Sorry for not selecting any answers, I overrited Linux with Windows XP and then repaired the Master Boot Record for Windows 8 and deleted XP, I'm now staying at Windows 8.

Because with a long type the argument could be much larger than Integer.MAX thus making the method more flexible? In the second 'if', is n&0x1 the same as n%2? If so why didn't the author just use n%2? To me it's more readable. The line that sets the 'root' variable, why add the 1L? What is the run-time complexity? Is it O(sqrt(n/6)) or O(sqrt(n)/6)? Or would we just say O(n)?

• Joomla: Cross site link boxes

  I am currently evaluating Joomla for use on the the rebuild of our corporate website. One of the features our designs have is spaces for what we've been calling widgets. These widgets include common ones for each page, contact us boxes, section navigation, that all seem pretty easy to implement. The other widgets we would us to highlight specific pages within the site relevant to the one you are on, and are therefore different for each article. We've called these link widgets and these are a pretty common site on many websites. I'm honestly at a bit of a loss as to how to do this with Joomla. From a CMS perspective I'd like to allow users to just select which three link widgets they want when editing the article and have some way of creating the widgets within the CMS as well. Editing the link widget would allow setting a title, a bit of text and selecting the page that it links to. Am I going to be able to do this with Joomla, and if I can roughly how to I go about it ?

• Code Clone Analysis on Rawr &ndash; Part 1

  In this post we’ll take a look at the first result from the Code Clone Analysis, and do some refactoring to eliminate the duplication.  The first result indicated that it found an exact match repeated 14 times across the solution, with 18 lines of duplicated code in each of the 14 blocks.   Net Lines Of Code Deleted: 179     In this case the code in question was a bunch of classes representing the various Bosses.  Every Boss class has a constructor that initializes a whole bunch of properties of that boss, however, for most bosses a lot of these are simply set to 0’s.     Every Boss class inherits from the class MultiDiffBoss, so I simply moved all the initialization of the various properties to the base class constructor, and left it up to the Boss subclasses to only set those that are different than the default values. In this case there are actually 22 Boss subclasses, however, due to some inconsistencies in the code structure Code Clone only identified 14 of them as identical blocks.  Since I was in there refactoring the 14 identified already, it was pretty straightforward to identify the other 8 subclasses that had the same duplicated behavior and refactor those also.   Note: Code Clone Analysis is pretty slow right now.  It takes approx 1 min to build this solution, but it takes 9 mins to run Code Clone Analysis.  Personally, if the results are high quality I’m OK with it taking a long time to run since I don’t expect it’s something I would be running all that often.  However, it would be nice to be able to run it as part of a nightly build, but at this time I don’t believe it’s possible to run outside of Visual Studio due to a dependency on the meta-data available in the VS environment.

• Blender 2.63a window position unstable with dual monitor extended desktop

  I have two 1920 x 1200 HP monitors and running Ubuntu 12.10. If I set them up as an extended desktop, (both 1280 x 1024 positioned for 2048 x 1280, all my applications work fine EXCEPT Blender (even Inkscape). Blender works great on a single monitor but always defaults to a window size that uses all available real estate and it can't do that with 2048 x 1280. It launches, but jumps all over the screen. Does any know a way to start Blender in a fixed size window so it would run in just one monitor?

  I am being offered - as a final year project - to do a Company Website. This is basically an out-house project and I am not completely sure whether I should take it. The requirements are : Company Information User Registration Order placements. The technologies that I should use are PHP, Javascript, HTML, CSS and maybe Java Servlets. This appears to me a very basic project and I need an opinion as to what effect it might have on my CV. Is it worth to do it? • How important is it for a programmer to know how to implement a QuickSort/MergeSort algorithm from memory?

  I was reviewing my notes and stumbled across the implementation of different sorting algorithms. As I attempted to make sense of the implementation of QuickSort and MergeSort, it occurred to me that although I do programming for a living and consider myself decent at what I do, I have neither the photographic memory nor the sheer brainpower to implement those algorithms without relying on my notes. All I remembered is that some of those algorithms are stable and some are not. Some take O(nlog(n)) or O(n^2) time to complete. Some use more memory than others... I'd feel like I don't deserve this kind of job if it weren't because my position doesn't require that I use any sorting algorithm other than those found in standard APIs. I mean, how many of you have a programming position where it actually is essential that you can remember or come up with this kind of stuff on your own?

• Can I make query strings produce separate pages?

  I have a profile page with a URL like so: localhost/profile.php/?username=Bob I was wondering, if I had a separate <title> which changed according to the username, would they produce separate pages in the google search results? How do I tell Google to only use the username string or does it search within the title? On a similar note, how would I create a separate page with the username like so: localhost/bob instead of a query string like facebook does. Do that make a new file for each user?

• Where should I store and verify files manipulated by an app

  I'm working on a little Ruby script to move screenshots while renaming them based on a specific convention. I'll be writing tests to confirm the behavior. Ruby has lots of conventions for where to store files (e.g. the "spec" and "features" directories for RSpec and Cucumber, respectively), but I'm not finding best practices for storing files that will be acted upon by the tests. The same goes for a destination for the final copies of the files. So, the question in two parts is: Where should I store files that the test cases will use for a source input. Where should tests that need to write output files send them to.

• Google Analytics on Demo Site

Isn't my usage of functional programming approach in snippet 1 is an overhead and why?

• What kind of hosting do I need?

  I migrated this question from serverfault. Hopefully this is the appropriate place. I have been trying to answer this question but I haven't found an specific answer to my situation. As I want to pay for what I need, I thought I could get a good answer here. I have a custom made forum (rather than a built-in forum like the ones you can find in plugins, e.g. WP-Forum or phpBB type of software) in Django. I don't want to use Apache and modwsgi because it's usually very memory-hungry and I can't afford a big server. I prefer a combination of nginx and gunicorn which I think is very efficient (maybe you can also tell me what you think about that). I'm expecting to receive 10,000 to 20,000 visits each month with 15,000 to 30,000 page impressions. I have reviewed some cloud services like Amazon EC2 or Rackspace and other more traditional services (Linodo). This site won't use videos or big images and I certainly don't need a huge amount of bandwidth (200GB would be definitely too much). I need shell access so shared hosting is out of the question. What do I need to run a website like that without problems? What about RAM? 256MB would be enough (that's the amount of RAM offered by small instances in Amazon and Rackspace)? Do you know of any alternative to those I mentioned? If you need more information to provide a useful answer, please don't hesitate to ask. By the way, I was told that Linodo is not all that different to Amazon EC2 but this website is supposed to work 24/7, so I can't take advantage of Linodo's flexibility regarding creating and deleting instances. • Should I extract specific functionality into a function and why?

  I have a large method which does 3 tasks, each of them can be extracted into a separate function. If I'll make an additional functions for each of that tasks, will it make my code better or worse and why? Edit: Obviously, it'll make less lines of code in the main function, but there'll be additional function declarations, so my class will have additional methods, which I believe isn't good, because it'll make the class more complex. Edit2: Should I do that before I wrote all the code or should I leave it until everything is done and then extract functions?

• point to rectangle distance

  I have a 2D rectangle with x, y position and it's height and width and a randomly positioned point nearby it. Is there a way to check if this point might collide with the rectangle if closer than a certain distance? like imagine an invisible radius outside of that point colliding with said rectangle. • Google Analytics goal funnel does not recognize virtual page views

  I have a setup wizard with 3 steps. Since I'm using AJAX each step uses a virtual pageview with an appropriate URL for each step (see below). The pageviews are being recorded in the Content section of Google Analytics but the Goal Funnel still shows zero for each step. I've tried advise on other forums such as... Make sure Goal URL is set to Exact match Make sure no steps or the Goal URL are a parent directory of any other steps. For example, don't track /wizard/ as a Goal/step and track /wizard/step2/. Not sure why this would be a problem since it is an exact match, but it shouldn't hurt so I tried it... Require (or don't require - tried both) the first step in the funnel ...but none of these seem to work. Thoughts? • Avoiding "double" subscriptions

  I am working on a website that requires a bit of marketing; let me explain. This website is offering a single, say, iTunes 50$ voucher to a lucky winner. To be entered in the draw, you need to invite (and has to join) at least one friend to the website. Pretty straightforward. Now, of course it would be easy for anyone to just create a fake account and invite that account so, I was thinking of some other way to somehow find out of possible cheating. I was thinking of an IP check on the newly subscribed (invited) user, and if there is the same IP logged in the last 24 hours, and if that's the case, investigate more about it. But I was thinking that maybe there is a more clever way around this issue. Has anyone ever though about this? What other solutions did you try? Thanks in advance.

• Simple Hierarchical Clustering Implementations for C#?

  I need a C# library that can do hierarchical single/complete link clustering. It's for a BSc final year project and I can't find any free implementations. I'd be happy to port a small(ish) Java project to C#, but most of the Java implementations are contained within huge libraries that have 30+ algorithms. The problem with large libraries is that one has to port 50% of the entire library due to dependency fanout. I'd be extremely grateful if anyone knows of any free single/complete link clustering implementations for C# or a small Java implementation of either! By the way, as I am a student, it may be possible to ask for an academic/research license from commercial companies.

• Should I expect my peers to read or practice on a regular basis? [closed]

  I've been debating asking this question for some time. Based several of the comments I read in this question I decided I had to ask. This feels like I'm stating the obvious, but I believe that regular reading (of books, blogs, StackOverflow, whatever) and/or practice are required just to stay current (let alone excel) in whichever stack you use to pay the bills, not to mention playing with things outside your comfort zone to learn new ways of doing things. Yet, I virtually never see this from many of my peers. Even when I go out of my way to point out useful (and almost always free) learning material, I quite often get a sense of total apathy from those I'm speaking to. I'd even go so far as to say that if someone doesn't try to improve (or at least stay current), they'll atrophy as technology advances and actually become less useful to the company. I don't expect people to spend hours a day studying or practicing. I have two young kids and hours of practice simply aren't feasible. Still, I find some time; perhaps on the train, at lunch, in bed for a few minutes, whatever. I'm willing to believe this is arrogance or naivete on my part, but I'd like to hear what the community has to say. So here's my question: Should I expect (and encourage) the same from my peers, or just keep my mouth shut and do my own thing?
