  • Certain SFTP user cannot connect

    - by trobrock
I have my Ubuntu Server set up so users with the group of sftponly can connect with sftp, but have a shell of /bin/false, and they connect to their home directories. This is working fine with three of the user accounts I have. But I added a new user account today the same way that I added the others and it will not successfully connect. sftp -vvv user@hostname debug1: Next authentication method: password user@hostname's password: debug3: packet_send2: adding 48 (len 73 padlen 7 extra_pad 64) debug2: we sent a password packet, wait for reply debug1: Authentication succeeded (password). debug2: fd 5 setting O_NONBLOCK debug3: fd 6 is O_NONBLOCK debug1: channel 0: new [client-session] debug3: ssh_session2_open: channel_new: 0 debug2: channel 0: send open debug1: Requesting [email protected] debug1: Entering interactive session. debug1: channel 0: free: client-session, nchannels 1 debug3: channel 0: status: The following connections are open: #0 client-session (t3 r-1 i0/0 o0/0 fd 5/6 cfd -1) debug3: channel 0: close_fds r 5 w 6 e 7 c -1 debug1: fd 0 clearing O_NONBLOCK debug3: fd 1 is not O_NONBLOCK Connection to hostname closed by remote host. • Problem setting up Master-Master Replication in MySQL

    - by Andrew
I am attempting to setup Master-Master Replication on two MySQL database servers. I have followed the steps in this guide, but it fails in the middle of Step 4 with SHOW MASTER STATUS; It simply returns an empty set. I get the same 3 errors in both servers' logs. MySQL errors on SQL1: [ERROR] Failed to open the relay log './sql1-relay-bin.000001' (relay_log_pos 4) [ERROR] Could not find target log during relay log initialization [ERROR] Failed to initialize the master info structure MySQL Errors on SQL2: [ERROR] Failed to open the relay log './sql2-relay-bin.000001' (relay_log_pos 4) [ERROR] Could not find target log during relay log initialization [ERROR] Failed to initialize the master info structure The errors make no sense because I'm not referencing those files in any of my configurations. I'm using Ubuntu Server 10.04 x64 and my configuration files are copied below. I don't know where to go from here or how to troubleshoot this. Please help. Thanks. /etc/mysql/my.cnf on SQL1: # # The MySQL database server configuration file. # # You can copy this to one of: # - "/etc/mysql/my.cnf" to set global options, # - "~/.my.cnf" to set user-specific options. # # One can use all long options that the program supports. # Run program with --help to get a list of available options and with # --print-defaults to see which it would actually understand and use. # # For explanations see # http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/server-system-variables.html # This will be passed to all mysql clients # It has been reported that passwords should be enclosed with ticks/quotes # escpecially if they contain "#" chars... # Remember to edit /etc/mysql/debian.cnf when changing the socket location. • Changed login for a user with encrypted home, now I can't login

    - by HappyDeveloper
I changed a user's login by doing this: $ usermod old_login -l new_login I also wanted to move his home to reflect his new username, but it wouldn't let me, so I just rebooted. But now after I login, the screen blinks and I'm redirected back to the login screen. And that's what happens when you cannot access your home, that's why I think it has something to do with his home being encrypted. How do I fix this? I'm on a Ubuntu 12 Virtualbox VM.

  • why must i uninstall libavcodec53 and libavutil51 to install ubuntu restricted extras

    - by honestann
When I try to install "ubuntu restricted extras" in "ubuntu software center", it displays a warning dialog that says the following items must be removed: libavcodec53 libavutil51 Why? And if I choose to install "ubuntu restricted extras", what will I lose? PS: I think I noticed libavcodec53 flash past as my daily build of codeblocks package was installing... so that's one possibility. Will I break my software development environment if I install "ubuntu restricted extras"? Or do these packages need to be removed because they are included in "ubuntu restricted extras"? If so, why doesn't the dialog mention that (and remove the worry and confusion)? PS: The output generated by "apt-get -s install ubuntu-restricted-extras" is HERE.

  • Ubuntu 9.1 Install from Disc Stalls After "Install Ubuntu" Sleclection is Made - eMachine

    - by nicorellius
I am trying to install Ubuntu 9.1 from the ISO on a CD (it needs to be this version) on an eMachine with a brand new Seagate hard disk. The CD boots OK, and I choose the language. Then I am presented with the choices: Try Ubuntu Install Ubuntu.... etc, etc... I have tried the top two choices several times (trying Ubuntu and installing it), but each and every time the installation stalls and the disc stops spinning right after I hit enter after choosing the option I want. I have tried different CD/DVD drives, changing the jumpers on both CD drives, different hard drives, and nothing works. Maybe there is a BIOS setting that is choking the installation? Any help would be appreciated.

  • Port forwarding + shared connection with Ubuntu

    - by Joey Adams
Because my wireless router's ethernet ports are defective, I set up a shared wireless connection from my laptop (which has wifi) to my eMac (which does not) via a crossover ethernet cable. The laptop is behind a router as 192.168.1.131, and the eMac is behind the laptop as 10.42.43.1 . The laptop is running Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic). I achieved the shared connection through NetworkManager Applet. I right-clicked on the network icon at the topright, went to Edit Connections, selected the Wired connection named "Auto eth0", clicked "Edit...", went to the "IPv4 Settings" tab, and selected the Method "Shared to other computers". The eMac can now access the Internet. Now I want to enable port forwarding. There's a game I want to play that needs port 6112 forwarded (both TCP and UDP) in order to host games. I set up the router to enable port forwarding for 192.168.1.131 (the laptop), but port forwarding still isn't available on the eMac. I suppose I need to pretend my laptop is a router and configure port forwarding on it, indicating that incoming connections to the laptop (192.168.1.131) should be forwarded to the eMac on the shared connection (10.42.43.1 ). Thus, packets coming into the router on port 6112 would be redirected to the laptop (by the router), then to the eMac (by the laptop). My question is, how would I do that on Ubuntu (in light of NetworkManager's presence)? Also, if I can't get this to work, does anyone mind hosting a comp stomp? :D

  • Need to make a scheduled task run as another user but keep the current user’s environment

    - by Chad Marmon
I need to backup users .pst files. The current method I am trying is making a shadow copy using Diskshadow. My script works great all but Diskshadow needs to be ran as administrator but also needs to retain the logged-on user's environment variables; specifically, the %USERNAME% and %HOMESHARE% variables so the right user’s files get copied up to the right network location. I have for the most part got this to work), but there’s no straightforward (or secure, at least) way to pass the password. If I set up a scheduled task to run the script as a domain user with local admin privs, the environment variables get lost. I need to run this script automagically so that there should be no user interaction. If I could figure out how to make a scheduled task run as another user but keep the current user’s environment, I think this would work, but I’ve been beating my head against that for a while now, without any luck.

  • Ubuntu tweak and Mozilla (firefox and thunderbird) cache

    - by Avatar Parto
I usually use Ubuntu tweak to do cleanup jobs on my PC. This includes apt and program cached data and old kernels. This goes alright for most programs except Mozilla based application - Firefox and Thunderbird. Ubuntu tweak doesn't seem to know where their cache folders are and always returns 'zero packages can be cleaned' even when the cache folder is full. Check screenshot below: I am looking for a way to clean up ALL my cache data and unneeded packages at one point. If someone knows how to change the ubuntu tweak cache folders for Firefox and Thunderbird, that would be perfect. I tried bleachbit last but it crashed my PC to a point I had to re-install Ubuntu. I am using Ubuntu tweak 0.8.6 on Ubuntu 13.04. Thanxs.

  • Install Ubuntu 10.10 from loopback mounted ISO image

    - by Zifre
I have a laptop with a faulty BIOS that has stopped booting from CDs even though it supports it (and it doesn't support booting from USB drives). I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 on it. I already had 9.10 installed. I tried using Kexec, but it refused to accept the kernel image. Eventually I found this page which shows how to make GRUB 2 boot from an ISO file. That worked fine, and I am now running the live image from the file. (If I can get this to work, it will be my new preferred way of installing Ubuntu, as it saves CDs and boots much faster.) However, I can't install it. The installer won't make changes to the hard drive, because the partition containing the ISO is mounted (and can't be unmounted because it is in use). Even if I only choose to use other partitions that are not mounted, the installer refuses to go any farther. Clearly, it should be possible using other partitions on the same disk. Is there any way to work around this issue or force the installer to go ahead?

  • Installing 64-bit Ubuntu alongside 32-bit Ubuntu?

    - by Macha
I have a 64-bit processor in my PC, but because of worries over application compatibility, up until now I have been using 32-bit Ubuntu (and 32-bit Vista because Dell wouldn't sell me 64-bit with my PC). Is it possible for me to install 64-bit Ubuntu alongside 32-bit ubuntu and 32-bit Windows Vista, so I can choose between them at boot and share data, and without uninstalling my 32-bit Ubuntu? My partitions are as follows Drive 1: 10 GB Vista recovery partition (E:), 240 GB Windows NTFS parition (230 GB used, C:). Drive 2: 167 GB Windows NTFS Partition (130 GB used, D: ), 8 GB swap partition, 13 GB / partition (6 GB used), 62 GB /home partition (20 GB used).

  • Unable to connect to shared (iscsitarget) dvd-rw drive on ubuntu karmic box

    - by Develop7
Intro I have desktop with DVD-RW drive that runs primarily on Linux (namely Ubuntu 9.10). My wife has netbook that rins Windows XP with no cd/dvd drive. There's also LAN through our ADSL modem/router. I've "ported" (actually, I've just grabbed sources and ran dpkg-buildpackage) iscsitarget package from Ubuntu Lucid to Karmic (here are packages), installed it (sudo aptitude install iscsitarget; sudo m-a a-i iscsitarget) and configured it in the following way (/etc/ietd.conf): Target iqn.2020-01.local.develop7-desktop:storage.disc.dvdrw Lun 0 Path=/dev/sr0,Type=blockio #I've skipped commented lines Also, I've opened port 3260 with ufw: $ sudo ufw status | grep 3260 3260 ALLOW 192.168.1.0/24 Problem But (here's the trouble) I still can't connect to this target from Windows box. Microsoft Software iSCSI Initiator screams "Logon failure" upon connect attempt, and, respectively, fails to connect. After unsuccessful connection attempt I've noticed this line in dmesg | tail's output: iscsi_trgt: ioctl(299) invalid ioctl cmd c078690d Question So the question is — what's wrong with my config/iSCSI target/whatever else? Or, in short — what I'm doing wrong? Thanks in advance.

  • Ubuntu One using 500 MB memory also when idle

    - by cdysthe
I'm a Dropbox convert (I hope!), but after having used Ubuntu One for a couple of weeks I notice a few differences from Dropbox. The most glaring difference is that the sync daemon constantly takes 500MB ram on my system (Ubuntu 12.04 x64). It hogs this amount of memory as soon as I log in, does it's initial sync/check but keeps the memory. All in all it seems to me that Ubuntu One uses more system resources than Dropbox. I am syncing the same folders and files with Ubuntu One as I was with Dropbox. Also, afte I log in Ubuntu One grids at 100% CPU for at least five minutes which can be annoying on a laptop, but is not a showstopper. I'm wondering if this is a problem on my system, or if Ubuntu One is expected to use that amount of memory even when idle?

  • Ubuntu Touch Official Hardware? [duplicate]

    - by user1628
This question already has an answer here: Where can I get a device with 'Ubuntu for phones' pre-installed? 1 answer I really like the look of Ubuntu touch and I want it ASAP, however, I am NOT willing to buy a device simply to port ubuntu touch on it. I don't want to void all warranties and take any risks. Therefore, I am really just waiting for official ubuntu touch hardware (devices made for ubuntu touch). I can't find any rumours or estimated release dates online, in fact, I can't find out anything at all. Can anyone? If so, what and where? When do you think they'll be official hardware? What price do you think it'll be? Do you think canonical/ubuntu will manufacture it themselves? Thanks, Zach

  • Bug unsubscribing from Ubuntu One Mobile

    - by rhino
Hi guys, I have an Ubuntu One Mobile subscription, which I can see in my subscriptions page: one.ubuntu.com/account/subscription/756082 I no longer need my Ubuntu One Mobile subscription, so click the link to cancel the Mobile service subscription: one.ubuntu.com/account/cancel/756082/ Then confirm that request to cancel: one.ubuntu.com/account/cancel/756082/confirm/ But the process ends there showing a "Something has gone wrong page", and my subscription remains active :( The same problem occurred when I attempted the same a few weeks back, so not a temporary problem I'm thinking. Any input gratefully received. I would like to report this problem directly to the maintainer of this part of the Ubuntu site but cannot see how to do that.

  • What's the better user experience: Waiting once at startup for a long time or waiting frequently for a short time?

    - by Roflcoptr
I'm currently design an application that involves a lot of calculation. Now I have generally two possibilities which I have both tested: 1) During startup of the application I calculated only the most important values and these values that consume a lot of time. So the user has to wait approximately 15 seconds during startup. But on the other hand a lot of user interactions require recalculation so that the user often has to wait 2-3 seconds after clicking somewhere until the application has calculated and loaded all values 2) I load everything during startup. This takes from 90 to 120 seconds... This is quite a long time, but the big advantage is that all the user interactions are executed immediately. So what would you generally consider the better approach? Loading all time-consuming operations during startup or when needed?

  • X-ming, Ubuntu apps - getting the Ubuntu style/theme to load

    - by user5402
I am running X-ming on Windows 7 and using putty to ssh into an Ubuntu system. On the Ubuntu system I use the command: $ gnome-terminal & to display a terminal back on the Windows box. When I do this I don't get the standard Ubuntu style, i.e. dark purple background, Mono font, solid cursor (which I've configured in the Gnome Control Center.) Instead I get a very plain style - white background, blinking cursor, very small font. However, if I run gnome-control-center and then click on, say, the Keyboard icon, the terminal window will be reconfigured with the Ubuntu style with my customizations (e.g. block cursor vs. blinking cursor.) Just starting one of the control applets seems to trigger this style change. My question is: How can I trigger this style change more directly - without having to launch the Gnome Control center and launching one of the configuration applets?

  • Ubuntu 9.10 LiveCD stalls after "Install Ubuntu" selected from boot menu on eMachines

    - by nicorellius
I am trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 from the ISO on a CD (it needs to be this version) on an eMachine with a brand new Seagate hard disk. The CD boots OK, and I choose the language. Then I am presented with the boot menu: Try Ubuntu Install Ubuntu etc I have tried the top two choices several times (trying Ubuntu and installing it), but each and every time the installation stalls and the disc stops spinning right after I hit enter after choosing the option I want. I have tried different CD/DVD drives, changing the jumpers on both CD drives, different hard drives, and nothing works. Maybe there is a BIOS setting that is choking the installation? Any help would be appreciated. Edit - I just tried running the hard drive as the master on the primary IDE and the CD drive as the slave on the primary with the same results. Maybe flash the BIOS?

  • How do I reinitialise a failed RAID 5 drive using terminal on Ubuntu Server

    - by Stephen
I've currently put together a new system and part of that has been creating a software RAID 5 using 'mdadm' in Ubuntu Server. I successfully got to the point where I create the array using: sudo mdadm --create --verbose /dev/md0 --level=5 --raid-devices=4 /dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1 /dev/sdd1 I left it to do its thing overnight then used the following command to check on it: watch cat /proc/mdstat To which the following was returned: Personalities : [linear] [multipath] [raid0] [raid1] [raid6] [raid5] [raid4] [raid10] md0 : active raid5 sdd1[4](S) sdc1[2] sdb1[1] sda1[0](F) 5860535808 blocks super 1.2 level 5, 512k chunk, algorithm 2 [4/2] [_UU_] unused devices: <none> It appears that one has failed (and I'm not too savvy with why another is a spare). So, just to be sure that something else isn't amiss I wanted to try and re-engage the failed drive. Can someone explain how I can do that and what I should do with the spare (if anything). And also how do I know when synchronisation is complete? The tutorial I used to get this far is located here: http://sonniesedge.co.uk/2009/06/13/software-raid-5-on-ubuntu-904/ Many thanks! p.s.
