• What kind of screen has the best image quality for reading/programming?

  I'm thinking about buying a new laptop, and while I bought my original one oblivious to the fact that there could be different quality screens out there, after seeing the screen on my sister's netbook I realized that I might have to be cautious with my next purchase. Granted, I did not confirm that the reason my sister's screen looks the way it does is due to the screen itself and not color scheme/graphics card, but I know very little about the different screen technologies and how they differ in image quality and therefore can't really tell if wondering about it even makes sense or not. So what I'm asking is: should I be worried about screen quality? And if so, what technologies should I be looking for? How do they differ and which are the best ones? What are the different elements that determine the quality of a screen and which stats should I go for in each element? For the record, I'm not interested in opinions about screen size, but picture quality for lots of reading/coding.

• Got black screen when recording screen from xvfb by ffmpeg x11grab device

  I'm trying to record video from a firefox run by xvfb-run but it always output nothing in the video file except black screen. Here's what I did: start a firefox, open google.com: $ xvfb-run firefox https://google.com Then it will use the default display server number 99. I can see the display information by command xdpyinfo -display :99. A screenshot works very well by command: $ xwd -root -silent -display :99.0 | xwdtopnm |pnmtojpeg > screen.jpg Start using ffmpeg to record a video: $ ffmpeg -f x11grab -i :99.0 out.mpg When I play the video file out.mpg, there's black screen all the time. Is there any parameter I missed? Updates I made progress that the video works instead of black screen only by this command: $ ffmpeg -y -r 30 -g 300 -f x11grab -s 1024x768 -i :99 -vcodec qtrle out.mov Notice it requires the screen resolution matches by specify more options to xvfb-run: $ xvfb-run -s "-screen 0 1224x768x16" -a firefox http://google.com But I still want to get more feedbacks and answers here.

• Gnu screen, how to update dynamically the title of a window?

  I googled a lot, but I can't find the answer I'm looking for... I'm trying to improve the aspect of GNU Screen using the screenrc file, I tuned colors, status line, caption and the list of the loaded windows. The only thing I'm not able to achieve is getting the caption with the current executed command as in this picture, note the vim caption in the right pane. What I currently have is this, and what I would like to obtain is having captions (and if possible also hardstatus line) with |0 less| 1 man instead of the current |0 bash| 1 bash. How to do this? • "dm-tool lock" doesn't lock my session

  When I use dm-tool to lock the screen for userA, I can log in as userB and then use dm-tool to switch back to userA's session without having to enter a password. Is that the expected behavior? If not, how should I switch from A to B without leaving userA exposed? userA$ dm-tool lock -- Shows Greeter. Login as userB. userB$ dm-tool switch-to-user userA -- Expected this to go to greeter, but it goes right back to userA's session. Do I have something mis-configured, or what?

• iPhone SDK "White Flash" transition

  I want to make a button; when you press it the screen fades to a "flash of white" and back like in those powerpoint transitions. I'm thinking maybe dynamically changing the opacity of a white square or something? What do you think? Is there something like this that already exists like part of Catransitions or something?   I got an email today asking for help to scrape Twitter. In particular, to be able to login. So I am going to show everyone, NOT to encourage anyone to violate Twitters terms of use but as an educational blog post about how PHP and cURL can be used to post variables and store cookies. Again, I am using the cScrape class I wrote, which you can download. Step 1 First go to twitter.com and look at the source code of the login to get the form field names and the form post location. You will see that the form posts to https://twitter.com/session and the username and password fields are session[username_or_email] and session[password] respectively. Step 2 Now you are ready to login. So using the fetch function in the Scrape class you create an associative array to contain the form values you want to post. The other thing you will need to do is uncomment the lines for CURLOPT_COOKIEFILE and CURLOPT_COOKIEJAR. Cookies will be required to stay logged in and scrape around. The paths to the cookie files need to be writable by your app. Also you will need to uncomment the line about CURLOPT_FOLLOWLOCATION. $data = array('session[username_or_email]' => "bradino", 'session[password]' => "secret"); $scrape->fetch('https://twitter.com/sessions',$data); Step 1.5 Oops that didn't work. All I got back was 403 Forbidden: The server understood the request, but is refusing to fulfill it. Ahhh I see another variable called authenticity_token I bet Twitter was looking for that. So let's back up and first hit twitter.com to get the authenticity_token variable, and then make the login post request with that variable included in our array of parameters. $scrape->fetch('https://twitter.com'); $data = array('session[username_or_email]' => "bradino", 'session[password]' => "secret"); $data['authenticity_token'] = $scrape->fetchBetween('name="authenticity_token" type="hidden" value="','"',$scrape->result); $scrape->fetch('https://twitter.com/sessions',$data); echo $scrape->result; So that's basically it. Now you are logged in and can scrape around and request other pages as you normally would. Sorry it wasn't a longer post. I really do enjoy this kind of stuff so if anyone has a request, hit me up. Errors? 1) Make sure that you are properly parsing the token variable 2) Make sure that you uncommented the lines about CURLOPT_COOKIEFILE and CURLOPT_COOKIEJAR, those options need to be enabled and be sure the path set is writable by your application 3) Make sure that the path to the cookie file is writable and that it is getting data written to it 4) If you get a message about being redirected you need to uncomment the line about CURLOPT_FOLLOWLOCATION, that option needs to be enabled true

• Mouse cursor lag after lock screen, 64 bit 12.04

  Recently I have noticed that when I return to my computer after it has been "locked" for a while, the mouse pointer has significant lag. The cursor position appears to only update a few times a second. Moving the mouse results in the pointer "following" the movement in a jerky kind of way, and then continuing for some fraction of a second after I have stopped using the mouse. Replacing the mouse has no effect. (I have two differently branded and constructed usb optical mice). Plugging either mouse into a different usb port has no effect. Once the problem was resolved by "suspending" the system, and then re-starting it with the power switch, but this does not work every time. So far, the only fool-proof fix is to shut the system down and re-start it (re-boot). I have tried this suggested fix. It had no effect.

• How to calibrate Toshiba LED screen - the colours are over saturated

  I have purchased a new Toshiba Satellite C850-A812 laptop, with ATI Radeon HD 75xx series. When i first installed Ubuntu 12.04.1, the open source driver worked like a charm with the colors, i mean the colors were so vivid. However after installing the ATI proprietary driver from the repos, the colors went too "whity" and too bright. I even installed the updated driver, and went further to download the latest driver from ATI and install it in vain. I tried to use the ubuntu build in calibration tool, but it keeps on asking me to enter the ICC profile before i proceed to calibrate. I played with the catalyst control center, tried everything possible, but still the colors are still wayyyyyyyyy over exposed. Please advice :)

  Using a brand-new install to a usb stick of 12.04 lts installed by Universal USB Installer 1.8.9.8. I log in as "ubuntu" with a blank password, the console appears for a second or two with text scrolling past and then it returns to the login page. I've used the same usb stick on several computers with the same results, so it doesn't appear to be a hardware/driver issue. I have not tried installing to the hard drive, because I wanted to try it out first.

• Login Screen hangs after entering password

  When I enter my password in the login box nothing happens. It gets stuck. It was running fine earlier. I have installed gnome-panel and cairo-dock, after which, I logged out, logged back in, and choose gnome classic session. I also added a ppa from the webupd8.org to install the themes (link). I opened Ubuntu Tweak tool, and changed the theme to Evolve the whole laptop stopped responding. The keyboard and mouse were unresponsive. So I was forced to do a shut down. Now whenever it starts, I cannot login into Ubuntu. I hear the fan noise, as its spinning very fast, when the laptop freezes.(Probably the CPU is running at 100%). Please help me. How can I login back to Ubuntu? I am using Ubuntu 12.04 and have installed all the latest updates.. EDIT: I want to know how can I delete a folder from the file system using the live CD?

I found out the problem is /home/user/.Xauthority ownership. root owns this folder and giving the ownership to the user will solve the problem... for a while. I don't know how or when, but the ownership will go back to root pretty often; It can happen just after one boot or ten. Is there a definitive solution to this problem?

• How can I keep gnu screen from becoming unresponsive after losing my SSH connection?

  I use a VPN tunnel to connect to my work network and then SSH to connect to my work PC running cygwin. Once logged in I can attach to a screen session and everything works great. Now, after a while, I walk away from my computer and sooner or later, the VPN tunnel times out. The SSH connection on each end eventually times out and then I eventually come back to my computer to do some work. Theoretically, this should be a simple matter of just restarting the VPN, reconnecting via SSH, and then running "screen -r -d". However apparently when the sshd daemon times out on the cygwin PC, it leaves the screen session in some kind of hung state. I can reproduce a similar hung state by clicking the close box on a cygwin bash shell window while it's running a screen session. Is there any way to get the screen session to recover once this has happened, so that I don't lose anything?

  I connect to my network using VPN. I have screen running and 'ssh' to a server. I then kill my shell and I was able to 'resume' by 'screen -r'. This works as expect. But when I disconnect VPN and re-connect VPN, and type 'screen -r' again. I was not able to get my last screen again. And I see "Write failed: Connection reset by peer46.11 MiB | 642 KiB/s" in the screen. Can you please tell me if it possible to reconnect 'screen' if my VPN is disconnect. Thank you.

I would assume there is a problem with the shell and it exits instantly, but I can't find anything wrong with it. I have tried using quotation marks around the path and the entire command, which only leads to "file not found" errors. The command works just fine when I enter it directly into a shell. The screen version is: Screen version 4.00.02 (FAU) 5-Dec-03 Help?

• Screen randomly goes blue/black/white

  Problem Randomly, while using my computer, the monitor goes dark grey/almost black, or it goes white with faint grey vertical lines, or it goes blue with black vertical lines. It's as if the computer powers off. People tell me I sign out of Skype, Spotify stops playing when it happens, etc. When I look at the tower, it doesn't seem like it's off at all. Nothing changes, fans are spinning, lights are on, etc. If you were only looking at the tower, you'd never know there was a problem The only way I can get it to come back up is to push and hold the power button and turn it off, then back on This never happens while I'm playing video games. I've done 5-6 hour sessions of League of Legends, and it doesn't do anything When I'm just browsing the web, reading email, checking Reddit, etc, it happens all the time. It can happen multiple times in a session, it usually takes only about 5 minutes from the time I start browsing to when the computer crashes This started happening after I moved to a new apartment (this has to be relevant somehow, it was not happening where I lived before) There is nothing in the crash logs or event logs System Specs i5 2500k CPU AMD Radeon 6800 GPU Gigabyte z68a-d3h-b3 motherboard WD VelociRaptor 1 TB HDD Screenshots Device manager About screen Things I have tried I was getting a WMI Error in my event logs, but I fixed it using Microsoft's fix, KB 2545227 I was using Windows 8. I wiped the HDD and downgraded to Windows 7 64 bit I took out the video card and used a can of air to totally clean out the video card, all fans, and the inside of the computer in general. I made sure all of the video card pins were fine, then reconnected it I tried to update my motherboard BIOS, but anything I downloaded from Gigabyte was only for 32 bit machines, not 64. I don't even know how to tell what my motherboard BIOS is at right now I am using a power strip, and anything else connected to it works just fine If I re-seat the monitor cable while this is happening, nothing changes Please, help me. I've been battling this for several weeks now, and it's so frustrating it makes me not even want to use the computer.

• White view when launch iOS app in simulator

  I have been working for 4 months on an app, its pretty complex and works fine. Now suddenly, I added a new class and did some changes to the MainWindow.xib with all my views there and now I just get a plain white view when I launch it with simulator. I even stripped it down completely to nothing but the appdelegate and one simple plain view with a button. So basically I've got an app with nothing but an appDelegate managing a tabBar, launching with one simple view, no frameworks no nothing and I still get a white app. There must be an option somewhere that I must have activated for the running of app in simulator but I can't figure it out. • Screen Flicker on a black MacBook

  I have a MacBook Black. For about the last six months I have had a strange screen flicker when I: start my machine and plug in the power cord of my machine This morning when I woke up my computer the screen backlight did not turn on at all. When I held the computer in direct sunlight I could see the screen and I could tell that everything was working normally (other than the backlight). Pressing the screen brightness controls (F2) brought up the brightness panel. The brightness panel informed me that the screen was at maximum brightness. I did a bit of Searching and this is what I found: This post describes how to buy and replace a macbook screen. Do you think that this would solve my problem? Additional info: I am running 10.6.4 I recently upgraded from 10.4. I experienced similar issues in 10.4. I am pretty sure that this is a hardware issue. The problem does not occur when the screen is at a specific angle. It usually only happens at startup/wakeup or when the power is plugged/unplugged.

• Is there a screen sharing/remote desktop app for mac that lets you use a different host screen resolution?

  Ok, there are tons and tons of questions about remote desktop for mac and they're all being closed as duplicates. I however am specifically looking for one that will let me use a different resolution than the host, the way you can with Remote Desktop for Windows. For instance, when I connect to my 11" Macbook Air booted into Windows7 from my quad-screen desktop, also booted into Win7 using Microsoft's Remote Desktop Client, it blanks out the screen on the notebook, then virtualizes the video across all four of my desktop's monitors at their native resolutions (2560x1600, 2 x 1920x1200 and 1600x1200) and the notebook now acts as if it has four physical monitors connected to it. All of this from a notebook that only has a 1366 x 768 native resolution. Even when running OS X on the client running RDC, while it doesn't support multi-monitors like its Win counterpart, it still lets me run at the native resolution of the client screen of 2560x1600. Again, it just blanks out the host screen while doing so. However when using Mac's screen sharing, since that is just glorified VNC, it just mirrors what's already on the host's screen, meaning it will always be a single screen with the resolution of 1366x768. This of course makes sense since VNC is a mirroring solution, not a video-virtualizing one like RDC, but it means that on my quad-monitor setup, the remote window isn't even large enough to fill up a single monitor, let alone four (unless you have a client that can scale it up, but that's video scaling. It's still only 1366x768.) So what I'm looking for is if there is a solution on the Mac that lets me do the same thing as RDC in a Win environment. Don't care if I have to pay. I'd gladly pay several hundred dollars for this. I just need that specific feature. Note: People have suggested various VNC clients, but the VNC host still runs at 1366x768 so that will not work here. Ever. Also, people have suggested Synergy/Synergy+/Teleport and such which share the keyboard and mouse, not video. Completely different animal unrelated to what I'm looking for.

• Howto get exit code of a script started in screen session

  Hi folks, I am currently creating a backup script which uses screen to start a backup job with rsync inside a screen session. The backup jobs are started as follows. screen -dmS backup /usr/bin/rsync ... As soon as the rsync job is finished, the screen session is terminated automatically. To make sure, that the backup was successful, I would like to check the exit code of the rsync job but unfortunately I really don't know how to get the exit code after the screen was terminated. Does someone have a good idea how to automatically check, if the rsync job was successful or not? Would be great if someone does. I already thought about using a temp file but like this: screen -dmS myScreen "rsync -av ... ; echo $? /tmp/myExitCode" but this unfortunately does not work. Then I thought about using stderr like in the example below: screen -dmS myScreen "rsync -av ... 2 /tmp/rsync-sterr None of my ideas worked out so far, since stderr is not written when I use the command above. :-( ? • Windows 7, Black screen with cursor, impossible to logon

  First - I have gone through as many possible solutions I've found here and elsewhere. [Edit - to describe the issue in more detail, the PC appears to boot correctly, but instead of the logon screen, I have been getting a black screen WITH the pointer cursor, and it responds correctly to the mouse. Pressing CTL-ALT-DEL brings up the logon screen's background, but with no logon area nor any other content. This screen was at the full resolution before I uninstalled the graphics driver in safe-mode.] I also just ran a full up-to-date AVG scan from boot media. [Edit - the AVG scan, which was updated to today's virus signatures, found no issues at all.] So - steps I've tried: Safe Boot, Restore from before the issue - done, no help. Uninstall the graphics driver - done, now i have a 1024x768 fallback screen, still no way in. sfc /scannow - only doable from Safe boot obviously, but no change. [Edit - booting from restore media, performing a startup repair and...]Restore further back - restored to 2 days ago, and I'd had many reboots since then with no problem. Enable autologin to try to get beyond the login screen - done, doesn't work. It seems the best advice is complete reinstall, but I really don't want to do that because it'll take 3-4 days to add all the apps I use. Some key points to note - in both states - before and after removing the video driver, I always had a mouse cursor on the screen. CTL-ALT-DEL flashes up the login background, but no login info. I can (and often do) reinstall from scratch, but was at a fairly stable state before this, and would prefer not to. -Paul
