• Why isn't my bundle getting passed?

- by NickTFried
I'm trying to pass a bundle of two values from a started class to my landnav app, but according to the debug nothing is getting passed, does anyone have any ideas why? package edu.elon.cs.mobile; import android.app.Activity; import android.content.Intent; import android.os.Bundle; import android.view.View; import android.view.View.OnClickListener; import android.widget.Button; import android.widget.EditText; public class PointEntry extends Activity{ private Button calc; private EditText longi; private EditText lati; private double longid; private double latd; public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.pointentry); calc = (Button) findViewById(R.id.coorCalcButton); calc.setOnClickListener(landNavButtonListener); longi = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.longitudeedit); lati = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.latitudeedit); } private void startLandNav() { Intent intent = new Intent(this, LandNav.class); startActivityForResult(intent, 0); } private OnClickListener landNavButtonListener = new OnClickListener() { @Override public void onClick(View arg0) { Bundle bundle = new Bundle(); bundle.putDouble("longKey", longid); bundle.putDouble("latKey", latd); longid = Double.parseDouble(longi.getText().toString()); latd = Double.parseDouble(lati.getText().toString()); startLandNav(); } }; } This is the class that is suppose to take the second point package edu.elon.cs.mobile; import com.google.android.maps.GeoPoint; import com.google.android.maps.MapActivity; import com.google.android.maps.MapController; import com.google.android.maps.MapView; import com.google.android.maps.MyLocationOverlay; import com.google.android.maps.Overlay; import android.content.Context; import android.graphics.drawable.Drawable; import android.hardware.Sensor; import android.hardware.SensorEvent; import android.hardware.SensorEventListener; import android.hardware.SensorManager; import android.location.Location; import android.location.LocationManager; import android.os.Bundle; import android.util.Log; import android.widget.EditText; import android.widget.TextView; public class LandNav extends MapActivity{ private MapView map; private MapController mc; private GeoPoint myPos; private SensorManager sensorMgr; private TextView azimuthView; private double longitudeFinal; private double latitudeFinal; double startTime; double newTime; double elapseTime; private MyLocationOverlay me; private Drawable marker; private GeoPoint finalPos; private SitesOverlay myOverlays; public LandNav(){ startTime = System.currentTimeMillis(); } public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.landnav); Bundle bundle = this.getIntent().getExtras(); if(bundle != null){ longitudeFinal = bundle.getDouble("longKey"); latitudeFinal = bundle.getDouble("latKey"); } azimuthView = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.azimuthView); map = (MapView) findViewById(R.id.map); mc = map.getController(); sensorMgr = (SensorManager) getSystemService(Context.SENSOR_SERVICE); LocationManager lm = (LocationManager)getSystemService(Context.LOCATION_SERVICE); Location location = lm.getLastKnownLocation(LocationManager.GPS_PROVIDER); int longitude = (int)(location.getLongitude() * 1E6); int latitude = (int)(location.getLatitude() * 1E6); finalPos = new GeoPoint((int)(latitudeFinal*1E6), (int)(longitudeFinal*1E6)); myPos = new GeoPoint(latitude, longitude); map.setSatellite(true); map.setBuiltInZoomControls(true); mc.setZoom(16); mc.setCenter(myPos); marker = getResources().getDrawable(R.drawable.greenmarker); marker.setBounds(0,0, marker.getIntrinsicWidth(), marker.getIntrinsicHeight()); me = new MyLocationOverlay(this, map); myOverlays = new SitesOverlay(marker, myPos, finalPos); map.getOverlays().add(myOverlays); } @Override protected boolean isRouteDisplayed() { return false; } @Override protected void onResume() { super.onResume(); sensorMgr.registerListener(sensorListener, sensorMgr.getDefaultSensor(Sensor.TYPE_ORIENTATION), SensorManager.SENSOR_DELAY_UI); me.enableCompass(); me.enableMyLocation(); //me.onLocationChanged(location) } protected void onPause(){ super.onPause(); me.disableCompass(); me.disableMyLocation(); } @Override protected void onStop() { super.onStop(); sensorMgr.unregisterListener(sensorListener); } private SensorEventListener sensorListener = new SensorEventListener() { @Override public void onAccuracyChanged(Sensor arg0, int arg1) { // TODO Auto-generated method stub } private boolean reset = true; @Override public void onSensorChanged(SensorEvent event) { newTime = System.currentTimeMillis(); elapseTime = newTime - startTime; if (event.sensor.getType() == Sensor.TYPE_ORIENTATION && elapseTime > 400) { azimuthView.setText(Integer.toString((int) event.values[0])); startTime = newTime; } } }; }

• Trouble Installing the new Android SDK

- by Dan Monego
I've installed the newest Android SDK using eclipse's software updates feature to hit the resource at https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/eclipse/. After installing it, it seems like the SDK is integrated into Eclipse, but when I try to create a new project with a single blank activity in it, I get the following error: [2009-06-06 11:41:24 - TestProject] no classfiles specified [2009-06-06 11:41:24 - TestProject] Conversion to Dalvik format failed with error 1 This is using eclipse version 3.4.2 running on top of Mac OS 10.5.7 on a 32 bit processor. Is this a misconfiguration on my part? Have I missed a part of the installation?

• How to prevent column b containing the same value as any column a in Oracle?

- by Janek Bogucki
What is a good way to prevent a table with 2 columns, a and b, from having any record where column b is equal to any value in column a? This would be used for a table of corrections like this, MR -> Mr Prf. -> Prof. MRs -> Mrs I can see how it could be done with a trigger and a subquery assuming no concurrent activity but a more declarative approach would be preferable. This is an example of what should be prevented, Wing Commdr. -> Wing Cdr. Wing Cdr. -> Wing Commander Ideally the solution would work with concurrent inserts and updates.

• Passing empty list as parameter to JPA query throws error

- by Tuukka Mustonen
If I pass an empty list into a JPA query, I get an error. For example: List<Municipality> municipalities = myDao.findAll(); // returns empty list em.createQuery("SELECT p FROM Profile p JOIN p.municipality m WHERE m IN (:municipalities)") .setParameter("municipalities", municipalities) .getResultList(); Because the list is empty, Hibernate generates this in SQL as "IN ()", which gives me error with Hypersonic database. There is a ticket for this in Hibernate issue tracking but there are not many comments/activity there. I don't know about support in other ORM products or in JPA spec either. I don't like the idea of having to manually check for null objects and empty lists every time. Is there some commonly known approach/extension to this? How do you handle these situations?

• Listview selects mutliple items when clicked

- by xlph
I'm trying to make a task manager, and I only have one problem. I have a listview that gets inflated. All the elements in the listview are correct. The problem is that when I select an item, the listview will select another item away. I've heard listviews repopulate the list as it scrolls down to save memory. I think this may be some sort of problem. Here is a picture of the problem. If i had more apps loaded, then it would continue to select multiple at once. Here is the code of my adapter and activity and XML associated public class TaskAdapter extends BaseAdapter{ private Context mContext; private List<TaskInfo> mListAppInfo; private PackageManager mPack; public TaskAdapter(Context c, List<TaskInfo> list, PackageManager pack) { mContext = c; mListAppInfo = list; mPack = pack; } @Override public int getCount() { return mListAppInfo.size(); } @Override public Object getItem(int position) { return mListAppInfo.get(position); } @Override public long getItemId(int position) { return position; } @Override public View getView(final int position, View convertView, ViewGroup parent) { TaskInfo entry = mListAppInfo.get(position); if (convertView == null) { LayoutInflater inflater = LayoutInflater.from(mContext); //System.out.println("Setting LayoutInflater in TaskAdapter " +mContext +" " +R.layout.taskinfo +" " +R.id.tmbox); convertView = inflater.inflate(R.layout.taskinfo,null); } ImageView ivIcon = (ImageView)convertView.findViewById(R.id.tmImage); ivIcon.setImageDrawable(entry.getIcon()); TextView tvName = (TextView)convertView.findViewById(R.id.tmbox); tvName.setText(entry.getName()); convertView.setOnClickListener(new OnClickListener() { @Override public void onClick(View v) { final CheckBox checkBox = (CheckBox)v.findViewById(R.id.tmbox); if(v.isSelected()) { System.out.println("Listview not selected "); //CK.get(arg2).setChecked(false); checkBox.setChecked(false); v.setSelected(false); } else { System.out.println("Listview selected "); //CK.get(arg2).setChecked(true); checkBox.setChecked(true); v.setSelected(true); } } }); return convertView; public class TaskManager extends Activity implements Runnable { private ProgressDialog pd; private TextView ram; private String s; @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.taskpage); setTitleColor(Color.YELLOW); Thread thread = new Thread(this); thread.start(); } @Override public void run() { //System.out.println("In Taskmanager Run() Thread"); final PackageManager pm = getPackageManager(); final ListView box = (ListView) findViewById(R.id.cBoxSpace); final List<TaskInfo> CK = populate(box, pm); runOnUiThread(new Runnable() { @Override public void run() { ram.setText(s); box.setAdapter(new TaskAdapter(TaskManager.this, CK, pm)); //System.out.println("In Taskmanager runnable Run()"); endChecked(CK); } }); handler.sendEmptyMessage(0); } Taskinfo.xml <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:orientation="horizontal" android:gravity="center_horizontal"> <ImageView android:id="@+id/tmImage" android:layout_width="48dp" android:layout_height="48dp" android:scaleType="centerCrop" android:adjustViewBounds="false" android:focusable="false" /> <CheckBox android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:id="@+id/tmbox" android:lines="2"/> </LinearLayout> Taskpage.xml <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:orientation="vertical"> <ListView android:id="@+id/cBoxSpace" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="400dp" android:orientation="vertical"/> <TextView android:id="@+id/RAM" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:textSize="18sp" /> </LinearLayout> Any ideas for what reason mutliple items are selected with a single click would be GREATLY appreciated. I've been messing around with different implementations and listeners and listadapters but to no avail.

• How to have onSearchRequested not open a web browser.

- by pcm2a
I have a button in my app. When it is pressed I call the onSearchRequested() method. When this is called the stock search box comes up so the user can type some junk in there. When they press "Go" I need the results returned back to my application but instead the stock browser is opened and a google search is performed. How can I tell it to return the results to my application instead. I've tried these items in my manifest.xml file: <meta-data android:name="android.app.default_searchable" android:value=".MainActivity" /> <activity android:name=".MainActivity" android:launchMode="singleTop" <intent-filter> <action android:name="android.intent.action.SEARCH" /> </intent-filter> I've also tried to capture the result in my onCreate with this: Intent intent = getIntent(); if (Intent.ACTION_SEARCH.equals(intent.getAction()))

• Custom View - Avoid redrawing when non-interactive

- by MasterGaurav
I have a complex custom view - photo collage. What is observed is whenever any UI interaction happens, the view is redrawn. How can I avoid complete redrawing (for example, use a cached UI) of the view specially when I click the "back" button to go back to previous activity because that also causes redrawing of the view. While exploring the API and web, I found a method - getDrawingCache() - but don't know how to use it effectively. How do I use it effectively? I've had other issues with Custom Views that I outline here.

• How to set notification sound volume programatically?

- by Vitalii Korsakov
I have this method in my main activity private void beep() { AudioManager manager = (AudioManager) getSystemService(Context.AUDIO_SERVICE); manager.setStreamVolume(AudioManager.STREAM_NOTIFICATION, 0, AudioManager.FLAG_SHOW_UI + AudioManager.FLAG_PLAY_SOUND); Uri notification = RingtoneManager .getDefaultUri(RingtoneManager.TYPE_NOTIFICATION); Ringtone r = RingtoneManager.getRingtone(getApplicationContext(), notification); r.play(); } As I understand, notification sound volume should be regulated by STREAM_NOTIFICATION. But notification always plays with the same volume despite that volume number in setStreamVolume method. Why is that?

• Right way to create [self]respawning app in python

- by grapescan
I am using jabber bot written in python to log some MUC talks. Sometimes it drops on some network or XMPP problems. In this case I have to start it again by myself. The goal is to make it "self-respawning". I have some variants about how to do it. Bot is one process. Another process monitors its activity and starts it if bot died. Main process spawns bot subprocess and controls it. Also I think daemonizing bot process is useful here. Platform is Linux, as you could guess. What is the right way to solve this problem?

• Fast single thread comet server, possible?

- by Pepijn
I recently encountered a few cases where a server would distribute an event stream that contains the exact same data for all listeners, such as a 'recent activity' box. It occurred to me that it is quite strange and inefficient to have a server like Apache run a thread processing and querying the database for every single comet stream containing the same data. What I would do for those global(not per user) streams is run a single thread that continuously emits data, and a new (green)thread for every new request that outputs the headers and then 'merges' into the main thread. Is it possible for one thread to serve multiple sockets, or for multiple clients to listen to the same socket? An example o = event # threads received | a b # 3 o / / # 3 - |/_/ | # 1 o c # 2 a, b | / o/ # 2 a, b o # 1 a, b, c | # connection b closed o # 1 a, c Does something like this exist? Would it work? Is it possible to do? Disclaimer: I'm not a server expert.

• Android - Notification bar height from a service

- by Vitaliy
Hi, The application I'm working on is a service which runs in the background in android. The problem is that I need to determine the height of the notification bar for some functionality of the service. I found a number of solutions for this, for regular activities - a view inside an activity can determine its own height without the notification bar, based on checking its actual view size from its onSizeChanged event, after it is already drawn. However, this is not applicable to a service which has no physical view drawn. I would really appreciate any ideas on getting the size of the notification bar at a system level, perhaps? Thanks so much! Vitaliy

• How do I take advantage of Android's "Clear Cache" button

- by Jay Askren
In Android's settings, in the "Manage Applications" activity when clicking on an app, the data is broken down into Application, Data, and cache. There is also a button to clear the cache. My app caches audio files and I would like the user to be able to clear the cache using this button. How do I store them so they get lumped in with the cache and the user can clear them? I've tried storing files using both of the following techniques: newFile = File.createTempFile("mcb", ".mp3", context.getCacheDir()); newFile = new File(context.getCacheDir(), "mcb.mp3"); newFile.createNewFile(); In both cases, these files are listed as Data and not Cache.

• Checkbox 'Checked' in ListView is restored after scrolling

- by adrianrdzv
I'm having the following problem: I have a ListActivity, which its ListView is composed by an icon, text and a checkbox (using LayoutInflater). The Adapter for the ListView extends ResourceCursorAdapter (i.e. the data source of the ListView is retrieved from a database, also the Checked status of each row) Everything works pretty Ok, except when I uncheck/check the checkbox in any row, if I scroll down until the modified checkbox is no longer visible, and then scroll up, the checkbox is restored to its original state. The database IS modified, this is not the problem (i.e. if I modify a row and exit the activity, and enter again, the modified row is displayed Ok). My guess is that this has something to do on how the list is rendered because for some reason the ListView "renders" the original state of all rows when it was first populated when scrolling. I've been looking around for this bug but I don't find anybody that had this problem. I appreciate any advice you have.

• Android draw using SurfaceView and Thread

- by Morten Høgseth
I am trying to draw a ball to my screen using 3 classes. I have read a little about this and I found a code snippet that works using the 3 classes on one page, Playing with graphics in Android I altered the code so that I have a ball that is moving and shifts direction when hitting the wall like the picture below (this is using the code in the link). Now I like to separate the classes into 3 different pages for not making everything so crowded, everything is set up the same way. Here are the 3 classes I have. BallActivity.java Ball.java BallThread.java package com.brick.breaker; import android.app.Activity; import android.os.Bundle; import android.view.Window; import android.view.WindowManager; public class BallActivity extends Activity { private Ball ball; @Override protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { // TODO Auto-generated method stub super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); requestWindowFeature(Window.FEATURE_NO_TITLE); getWindow().setFlags(WindowManager.LayoutParams.FLAG_FULLSCREEN,WindowManager.LayoutParams.FLAG_FULLSCREEN); ball = new Ball(this); setContentView(ball); } @Override protected void onPause() { // TODO Auto-generated method stub super.onPause(); setContentView(null); ball = null; finish(); } } package com.brick.breaker; import android.content.Context; import android.graphics.Bitmap; import android.graphics.BitmapFactory; import android.graphics.Canvas; import android.view.SurfaceHolder; import android.view.SurfaceView; public class Ball extends SurfaceView implements SurfaceHolder.Callback { private BallThread ballThread = null; private Bitmap bitmap; private float x, y; private float vx, vy; public Ball(Context context) { super(context); // TODO Auto-generated constructor stub bitmap = BitmapFactory.decodeResource(getResources(), R.drawable.ball); x = 50.0f; y = 50.0f; vx = 10.0f; vy = 10.0f; getHolder().addCallback(this); ballThread = new BallThread(getHolder(), this); } protected void onDraw(Canvas canvas) { update(canvas); canvas.drawBitmap(bitmap, x, y, null); } public void update(Canvas canvas) { checkCollisions(canvas); x += vx; y += vy; } public void checkCollisions(Canvas canvas) { if(x - vx < 0) { vx = Math.abs(vx); } else if(x + vx > canvas.getWidth() - getBitmapWidth()) { vx = -Math.abs(vx); } if(y - vy < 0) { vy = Math.abs(vy); } else if(y + vy > canvas.getHeight() - getBitmapHeight()) { vy = -Math.abs(vy); } } public int getBitmapWidth() { if(bitmap != null) { return bitmap.getWidth(); } else { return 0; } } public int getBitmapHeight() { if(bitmap != null) { return bitmap.getHeight(); } else { return 0; } } public void surfaceChanged(SurfaceHolder holder, int format, int width, int height) { // TODO Auto-generated method stub } public void surfaceCreated(SurfaceHolder holder) { // TODO Auto-generated method stub ballThread.setRunnable(true); ballThread.start(); } public void surfaceDestroyed(SurfaceHolder holder) { // TODO Auto-generated method stub boolean retry = true; ballThread.setRunnable(false); while(retry) { try { ballThread.join(); retry = false; } catch(InterruptedException ie) { //Try again and again and again } break; } ballThread = null; } } package com.brick.breaker; import android.graphics.Canvas; import android.view.SurfaceHolder; public class BallThread extends Thread { private SurfaceHolder sh; private Ball ball; private Canvas canvas; private boolean run = false; public BallThread(SurfaceHolder _holder,Ball _ball) { sh = _holder; ball = _ball; } public void setRunnable(boolean _run) { run = _run; } public void run() { while(run) { canvas = null; try { canvas = sh.lockCanvas(null); synchronized(sh) { ball.onDraw(canvas); } } finally { if(canvas != null) { sh.unlockCanvasAndPost(canvas); } } } } public Canvas getCanvas() { if(canvas != null) { return canvas; } else { return null; } } } Here is a picture that shows the outcome of these classes. I've tried to figure this out but since I am pretty new to Android development I thought I could ask for help. Does any one know what is causing the ball to be draw like that? The code is pretty much the same as the one in the link and I have tried to experiment to find a solution but no luck. Thx in advance for any help=)

• Abort a slow flush to disk after write?

- by Therealstubot
Is there a way to abort a python write operation in such a way that the OS doesn't feel it's necessary to flush the unwritten data to the disc? I'm writing data to a USB device, typically many megabytes. I'm using 4096 bytes as my block size on the write, but it appears that Linux caches up a bunch of data early on, and write it out to the USB device slowly. If at some point during the write, my user decides to cancel, I want the app to just stop writing immediately. I can see that there's a delay between when the data stops flowing from the application, and the USB activity light stops blinking. Several seconds, up to about 10 seconds typically. I find that the app is holding in the close() method, I'm assuming, waiting for the OS to finish writing the buffered data. I call flush() after every write, but that doesn't appear to have any impact on the delay. I've scoured the python docs for an answer but have found nothing.

• User Interface functionality modelling languages?

- by naugtur
I am looking for a UI functionality modelling language (UML-alike "thing", but for user interfaces) that is already accepted and maybe has its design patterns and handles the problem better than state or activity diagram. (If there is no such thing I'm planning to develop that BTW :)) This question came to mind as a result of a discovery that UML and its diagrams fails at describing complicated UI functionality with event-driven flow of execution (ie. javascript/jQuery big projects) EDIT: I've been thinking of using BPMN but It was not created for this purpose. EDIT2: See this community topic of mine - I decided to start developing said language.

• How do you find out release, mailing list statistics information on open source projects

- by Samuel
We are interested in finding out some statistics of various frameworks Mailing list activity on say richfaces. Much similar to what is available on http://code.google.com (Low, Medium, High) + average number of emails per day | per month. Number of releases made in a year including patch, minor, major releases. We did look at the maven repositories but that wasn't very useful either. We did look at ohloh, but didn't get the desired information. Any other ideas on where to get this information (any maven-2 plugins)?

• Problem with filling dataset

- by Brian
This is a small portion of my code file. Each time my debugger reaches the line 'NewDA.Fill(NewDS);' at runtime it jumps to the catch. I'm positive the daynumber variable gets a value that's present in the database and I've tried the query outside of the codefile on my database and it works fine. I'm also using the connectionstring 'db' on more parts of the code with successful results. string QueryNew = "SELECT activityname AS [Name], activitycategorynumber AS [Category] " + "FROM ACTIVITY WHERE daynumber = @daynumber"; SqlCommand NewCmd = new SqlCommand(QueryNew, db); NewCmd.Parameters.Add("@daynumber", SqlDbType.Int).Value = daynumber; SqlDataAdapter NewDA = new SqlDataAdapter(NewCmd); DataSet NewDS = new DataSet(); NewDA.Fill(NewDS);

• Caching generated QR Code

- by Michal K
I use zxing to encode a qr code and store it as a bitmap and then show it in ImageView. Since the image generation time is significant I'm planning to move it to a separate thread (AsyncTaskLoader will be fine I think). The problem is - it's an image and I know that to avoid memory leaks one should never store a strong reference to it in an Activity. So how would you do it? How to cache an image to survive config changes (phone rotation) and generally avoid generating it onCreate()? Just point me in the right direction, please.

• polymorphic hql

- by Berryl
I have a base type where "business id" must be unique for a given subclass, but it is possible for there to be different subclasses with the same business id. If there is a base type with a requested id but of the wrong subclass I want to return null, using a named query. The code below does this, but I am wondering if I can avoid the try/catch with a better HQL. Can I? Cheers, Berryl current hql <query name="FindActivitySubjectByBusinessId"> from ActivitySubject act where act.BusinessId = :businessId </query> current fetch code public ActivitySubject FindByBusinessId<T>(string businessId) where T : ActivitySubject { Check.RequireStringValue(businessId, "businessId"); try { return _session.GetNamedQuery("FindActivitySubjectByBusinessId") .SetString("businessId", businessId) .UniqueResult<T>(); } catch (InvalidCastException e) { // an Activity Subject was found with the requested id but the wrong type return null; } }

• How can I prevent my Android app/service from being "killed" from a task manager?

- by Don
It is very important that my service stay running until someone with a password stops the service from my UI screen. My app runs great but it is designed to be turned on/off by parents (with a password) on their kids phones. I have managed to make everything work but the problem I'm having is that if the kid uses a task manager to kill my service then my app is useless. I would be grateful to anyone who knows a way to either 1) monitor the service and start it back up automatically if its "killed" or 2) prevent someone from being able to kill it except from the activity (administration screen) that launched the service. Or both? I'm sorry if I'm not very clear in describing the problem, I'm a beginner. I've made great progress so far but I am stuck at this last hurdle.
