• What to do about unreadable grub screen

  I have been upgrading my Ubuntu, from 10.04 to 12.04 to 12.10 to 13.04 in the past few days with varying degrees of success. One problem that has been constant through every step of the upgrade, since 12.04 is that a portion of the text on the grub screen is off the screen to the left so I can't completely make out what the options are. As I am having other troubles with the upgrade I would like to at least be able to see what options there are to me at boot time. Is there some sort of grub configuration that can handle this?

• Is it a bad practice to have an interface to define constants?

  I am writing a set of junit test classes in java. There are several constants, for example strings that I will need in different test classes. I am thinking about an interface that defines them and every test class would implement it. The benefits I see there are: easy access to constants: "MY_CONSTANT" instead of "ThatClass.MY_CONSTANT" each constant defined only once Is this approach rather a good or bad practice? I feel like abusing the concept of interfaces a little bit. You can answer generally about interfaces/constants, but also about unit tests if there is something special about it.

• Create Custom Speech Bubbles in Silverlight.

  I had a reader email me the following question: “How do you create Speech Bubbles in Silverlight/WPF without adding any extra .dlls? Right off the bat, I know at least two ways to create the speech bubbles that look just like the ones in comic books. Using the Callout Shapes included with Blend 4. Using the free 3rd party control named FreeBubbles (I used this before Blend 4). Unfortunately, we cannot use either of these as they will both add extra .dll’s to the project. So why wouldn’t you want to use one of those? I can think of a few reasons: You do not want to increase the size of your .XAP by including extra .dll’s. You do not have Expression Blend or the license to the use the .dll’s. You want a custom Speech Bubble that is not included in the four “Callout” Controls with Blend. Instead of using one of these methods, we will create a Speech Bubble in Blend 4 using Path element and a TextBlock. Before we get started, lets look at the Callout Shapes included with Blend 4. Using Blend 4 you can simply drag/drop these controls onto your Silverlight application and you are ready to go. We can create all of these Speech Bubbles and even some of the modern bubbles used in recent comic books. Lets get started. Start up Expression Blend 4 and select the Pen Tool. On the Art Board, start connecting the dots like I did below. You can add a color if you wish. …keep going …complete Let’s go ahead and add some text to the Speech Bubble. Drag a TextBlock from the Panel and put it directly inside the Speech Bubble. Go ahead and set the TextAlignment to Center for the TextBlock. and give it some text. At this point, you could go ahead and create a user control if you want to reuse the Speech Bubble you created. Select both the Path and the TextBlock by clicking then while holding down CTRL and then Right Click them. Select Make Into User Control. Give it a name and then Build your project. Lets create another one using the Ellipse for the older comic book style of Speech Bubbles. Drag an Ellipse to the Artboard and give it a color. Now, grab the Pen and drag a triangle like I did below. Simply drag it over a corner of the Ellipse. Select Combine then Unite and you will have a Path. At this point, you can go ahead and add a TextBlock like we did earlier. Lets go ahead and create a rounded rectangle one by adding a Rectangle to the Artboard. Go ahead and set the RadiuX and RadiusY to 25 to give it rounded edges. Let’s create another path and drag it right on top of our rounded rectangle like we did earlier. …looking good Select Combine then Unite and you will have a Path. At this point, you can go ahead and add a TextBlock like we did earlier. So let’s look at what we’ve created today using the path element and TextBlock. • How do developers find the time to stay on top of latest technologies?

  I was a freelance web developer until circa 2004 when I started going down the management route but have decided to try to get back into development again (specifically JavaScript and HTML5 web/mobile web apps) and I really get the impression to be truly good at these and similar fast moving technologies a constant amount of time is required to be set aside to invest in getting better at existing skills in addition to learning new skills. I understand right now since I am getting back into things there is a pretty steep learning curve, but seeing how good many guys are out there - the only way I see of getting up there is putting in a serious amount of time. For those working as fulltime developers, what I am trying to understand is this - on most days, how much time in the office is spent actually grinding out code compared to learning/research. I could easily spend 2-4 hours daily getting on top of the best ways to go about doing things. Do most good developers who are employed full time invest significant hours outside of work sharpening their skills? Or maybe I'm looking at all of this completely wrong?

• Targeting a vehicle with complex movement?

  Targeting a vehicle with known constant velocity is simple, and collision is guaranteed. Imprecise AI can be modeled by adding a small error factor. But how would one go about targeting a vehicle whose movements are more complex? Perhaps it's evading the AI or another game object. I've been thinking about how I'd do it myself in a FPS (in which bullets have finite speed) and think there might need to be at least couple of targeting modes based on the target's movement in the previous second or so: If it's near linear (peak acceleration in a certain range) target with the linear model If it's highly irregular (perhaps size of bounding box of recent positions could be used?) , target at an average For now I can assume 2d space, AI is stationary and projectile moves linearly.

• How to offer a cookie opt in/out to users?

  I intend to use google analyticts, and as I understand it I will need to offer users the option to opt out of cookies. The question is this: I HATE these constant cookie option boxes, everyone I ask it getting annoyed by them too. Its nice to have the option, but we all know they have been in use for well over a decade. So - how big of a deal do I have to make about the fact that I'm using GoogleAn? can I pop a small link at the bottom of the page, maybe integrate it into "Privacy policies" page, and give people the option to opt out there? This would be very much the "Assume the majority of users don't mind, but at least make the option available" stance. Ironically setting a cookie seems to be the only way I can see to enforce the opt-out! as IP's change.

I understand how MVC frameworks work. I have made a couple websites for friends ( one with my own engine ). Maybe it is time to try to do some interesting stuff for someone? ( say freelance or try to find some job in this industry ) Which expierence did you have, when you got your first job?

• Good places to submit a business profile?

  We have a new graphic/web design site that we've created and we'd like to give it a boost in terms of back links. What are the obvious places to submit a website to achieve some good back links? And what would be the recurring work load (if any) that those back links would need? Are there any good industry specific websites we could submit a profile to? E.g Twitter, would need constant interaction and new content with back links to the website. UPDATE: I've always felt it's worth it but after several years trying to submit different websites, I've never successfully managed to get a site into DMOZ!!

• How to calculate shot angle and velocity to hit a moving target?

  I am developing a 2D Android game and I am making an aiming algorithm for AI projectiles to hit enemies either following a path, or free moving. At the moment it just calculates where the target will be after a distance and fires a projectile to meet it at that distance. Of course this means varying the projectile speed to meet the target. Does anyone have any tips for a simple-ish algorithm (optimal-ish) to calculate when the projectile needs to fire and where it needs to aim if it can only travel at a constant velocity? Say the projectile goes twice the speed of the target? The only way I can think of involves searching and seems quite large.

• Moving from Windows 8.1 to Ubuntu - what can I do to replace OneDrive?

  That's it - I got tired from the constant problems on and about Windows I'm having. Network issues, performance issues, compatibility issues... But I'll seriously miss OneDrive integration (all my files are there). There is some kind of app that can sync with it? And what is the easiest way to install JDK? Through PPAs? Note that I have no plans to keep Windows, I'll just replace the d*mn thing with Ubuntu (maybe Mint).

• ASPNET MVC - Override Html.TextBoxFor(model.property) with a new helper with same signature?

  I want to override Html.TextBoxFor() with my own helper that has the exact same signature (but a different namespace of course) - is this possible, and if so, how? The reason for this is that I have 100+ views in an already existing app, and I want to change the behaviour of TextBoxFor so that it outputs a maxLength=n attribute if the property has a [StringLength(n)] annotation. The code for automatically outputting maxlength=n is in this question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2386365/maxlength-attribute-of-a-text-box-from-the-dataannotations-stringlength-in-mvc2. But my question is not a duplicate - I am trying creating a more generic solution: where the DataAnnotaion flows into the html automatically without any need for additional code by the person writing the view. In the referenced question, you have to change every single Html.TexBoxFor to a Html.CustomTextBoxFor. I need to do it so that the existing TextBoxFor()'s do not need to be changed - hence creating a helper with the same signature: change the behaviour of the helper method, and all existing instances will just work without any changes (100+ views, at least 500 TextBoxFor()s - don't want to manually edit that). I tried this code: (And I need to repeat it for each overload of TextBoxFor, but once the root problem is solved, that will be trivial) namespace My.Helpers { public static class CustomTextBoxHelper { public static MvcHtmlString TextBoxFor<TModel, TProperty>(this HtmlHelper<TModel> htmlHelper, Expression<Func<TModel, TProperty>> expression, object htmlAttributes, bool includeLengthIfAnnotated) { // implementation here } } } But I am getting a compiler error in the view on Html.TextBoxFor(): "The call is ambiguous between the following methods or properties" (of course). • LinkBuilder.BuildUrlFromExpression not working anymore in .Net 4 / VS 2010 ?

  Hi, I recently migrating my ASP.Net MVC 1 application from VS.Net 2008 / C# 3.5 to VS.NET 2010 / C# 4.0. I massively used a builder to get URL strings from the strongly typed calls. It looks like this : // sample call : string toSamplePage = Url.To<SampleController>(c => c.Page(parameter1, parameter2)); the code is added as an extension to the default UrlHelper : public static string To<Tcontroller>(UrlHelper helper, Expression<Action<Tcontroller>> action) where Tcontroller : Controller { // based on Microsoft.Web.Mvc.dll LinkBuilder return LinkBuilder.BuildUrlFromExpression<Tcontroller>(helper.RequestContext, helper.RouteCollection, action); } The only problem of this, is the reference to Microsoft.Web.Mvc dll, but the gain in readability was worth it. Problem : it does not work anymore, return (null) whatever the parameters. Questions : is there a better way now to build links from an expression ? (yes I tried to google it without success) is there a trick to have the former LinkBuilder.BuildUrlFromExpression works ? I tried to recompile it into C# 4.0, but the problem is that it implies working on my own compilated version of System.Web.Mvc which is not an option. I'm currently trying to migrate to MVC 2 but I still have issues... Waiting for your suggestions...

• VS2008 -> VS2010 leads to cryptic STL errors

  The following C++ library was successfully compiled in VS2008 http://sourceforge.net/projects/xmlrpcc4win/files/xmlrpcc4win/XmlRpcC4Win1.0.8.zip/download When I open it in VS2010, it goes through the conversion wizard process without any errors. • LINQ to Entities exceptions (ElementAtOrDefault and CompareObjectEqual)

  I am working on a shipping platform which will eventually automate shipping through several major carriers. I have a ShipmentsView Usercontrol which displayes a list of Shipments (returned by EntityFramework), and when a user clicks on a shipment item, it spawns a ShipmentEditView and passes the ShipmentID (RecordKey) to that view. I initially wrestled with trying to get the context from the parent (ShipmentsView) and finally gave up resolving to get to it later. I wanted to do this to keep a single instance of the context. anyhow, I now create a new instance of the context in my ShipmentEditViewModel, and query against it for the Shipment record. I know I could just pass the record, but I wanted to use the Ocean Framework that Karl Shifflett wrote and don't want to muck about writing new transition methods. So anyhow, I query and when stepping through, I can see that it returns a record, as soon as execution reached the point where it assigned the query result to the e.Result property, it throws up the following exception depending on the query I used. I have been trying to get this thing to display a record for like three days. i am seriously thinking about going back and re=-engineering it without the MVVM pattern (which I realize I am only starting to learn and understand) if only to make the &$^%ed thing work. Given: type 'a tree = Tree of 'a * 'a tree list Define a function mtree : 'a tree -'a, that returns the greatest value of all the nodes in a multiway tree, following the usual order relation in OCaml (<=) I've come to do something like this below, which, of course, is not working. let rec mtree (Tree (r, sub)) = let max_node (Tree(a, l1)) (Tree(b, l2)) = if a >= b then (Tree(a, l1)) else (Tree(b, l2)) in List.fold_left max_node r sub;; After reading an answer to this I'm posting the fixed code. let rec mtree (Tree(r,sub)) = let max_node (Tree(a, l1)) (Tree(b, l2)) = if a >= b then a else b in List.fold_left (max_node) r (List.map mtree sub);; The idea is the same, fold the list comparing the nodes making use of my local function to do so and travel through the tree by calling the function itself over the nodes lists of the consecutive levels. Is still not working, though. Now complains about max_node in the fold_left part. Error: This expression has type 'a tree -> 'a tree -> 'a but an expression was expected of type 'a tree -> 'a tree -> 'a tree And here I'm definitely lost because I can't see why does it expects to return an 'a tree

• How can I use external expressions in Linq with EF4 (and LINQKit)?

  I want to separate out often used expressions in linq queries. I'm using Entity Framework 4 and also LINQKit but I still don't know how I should do it the right way. Let me give you an example: Article article = dataContainer.Articles.FirstOrDefault(a => a.Id == id); IEnumerable<Comment> comments = (from c in container.Comments where CommentExpressions.IsApproved.Invoke(c) select c); public static class CommentExpressions { public static Expression<Func<Module, bool>> IsApproved { get { return m => m.IsApproved; } } } Of course the IsApproved expression would be something much more complicated. The problem is that the Invoke() won't work because I didn't call .asExpandable() from LINQKit on container.Comments but I can't call it because it's just an ICollection instead of an ObjectSet. So my question is: Do I always have to go through the data context when I want to include external expressions or can I somehow use it on the object I fetched (Article)? Any ideas or best practices? • Blank subreport in Jasper Reports

  Hi all, I'm trying to launch a report that I created in iReport which contains a main report and a subreport. In iReport, the subreport launches fine and contains data, however when I try to launch it from within my java code, the subreport is blank. What I've done so far: I have a String parameter in the main report called "SUBREPORT" that is used to define the path to the subreport. E.g. value: "E:\java\ReportLauncher\reports\test_subreport1.jasper" The subreport expression in the main report is set to: $P{SUBREPORT} The subreport connection expression is: $P{REPORT_CONNECTION} I also have a subreport parameter defined called "INVOICE_NUMBER" that is set to $F{InviInvNo}, which maps to a field in the main report. In my java code, I have: HashMap<String, Object> paramHash = new HashMap(); paramHash.put("INVOICE_NUMBER", invoiceID); paramHash.put("REPORT_CONNECTION", this.conn); paramHash.put("SUBREPORT", subReportPath); JasperPrint jasperprint = JasperFillManager.fillReport(this.reportPath, paramHash, this.conn); The main report is created fine and is populated. The subreport area however is blank. Any thoughts for what I'm doing wrong? Thanks in advance, Andy.

• Powershell: Select-Object with additional calculated difference value

  Let me explain my question. I have a daily report about one PC's free space as in text file (sp.txt) like: DateTime FreeSpace(MB) ----- ------------- 03/01/2010 100.43 DateTime FreeSpace(MB) ----- ------------- 03/02/2010 98.31 .... Then I need to use this file as input to generate a report with difference of free space between dates: DateTime FreeSpace(MB) Change ----- ------------- ------ 03/01/2010 100.43 03/02/2010 98.31 2.12 .... Here are some codes I have to get above result without the additional "Change" calculation: Get-Content "C:\report\sp.txt" ` | where {$_.trim().length -gt 0 -and -not ($_ -like "Date*") -and -not ($_ -like "---*")} ` | Select-Object @{Name='DateTime'; expression={[DateTime]::Parse($_.SubString(0, 10).Trim())}}, ` @{Name='FreeSpace(MB)'; expression={$_.SubString(12, 12).Trim()}}, ` | Sort-Object DateTime ` | Select-Object DateTime, 'FreeSpace(MB)' |ft -AutoSize # how to add additional column Change to this Select-Object? My understanding is that Select-Object will return a collection of objects. Here I create this collection from an input text file(parse each line into parts: datetime and freespace(MB)). In order to calculate the difference between dates, I guess that I need to add additional calculated value to the result of the last Select-Object, or pipe the result to another Select-Object with the calculation as additional property or column. In order to do it, I need to get the previous row's FreeSpace value. Not sure if it is possible and how?

• Eclipse Plugin does not work in FlashBuilder/FlexBuilder Standalone

  Hi, created an Eclipse plugin that contributes to the UI by a new project wizard a new menu in the context menu of projects in the Package Explorer a new project nature + builder a new preference page for the plugin The plugin works fine when installed in a normal Eclipse instance with Flex/Flashbuilder as plugin. The problem now is, that the plugin never gets activated when i install it in a Flex/Flashbuilder Standalone instance. Neither of the features described above is available. I even have no idea how to debug this, error-log (workspace/.metadata/.log) the following message appears, (but i dont think it is related to the problem) !ENTRY org.eclipse.ui.workbench 2 0 2009-07-20 17:51:17.984 !MESSAGE A handler conflict occurred. But they appear under Configured features and Configured plug-ins. Starting FlashBuilder with -clean didn't solve the problem. (the start command is now "C:\Programme\Adobe\Flash Builder Beta\Gumbo.exe" -clean) My plugin depends on org.eclipse.ui, org.eclipse.core.runtime, org.eclipse.core.resources, com.adobe.flexbuilder.project com.adobe.flexbuilder.project.ui com.adobe.flexbuilder.ui All of these should be available, as i see it. (and an error should be generated if they were not, i hope)

• Date query with Hibernate on Timestamp Column in PostgreSQL

  A table has timestamp column. A sample value in that could be 2010-03-30 13:42:42. With Hibernate, I am doing a range query Restrictions.between("column-name", fromDate, toDate). The Hibernate mapping for this column is as follows. <property name="orderTimestamp" column="order_timestamp" type="java.util.Date" /> Let's say, I want to find out all the records that have the date 30th March 2010 and 31st March 2010. A range query on this field is done as follows. Date fromDate = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyy-MM-dd").parse("2010-03-30"); Date toDate = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyy-MM-dd").parse("2008-03-31"); Expression.between("orderTimestamp", fromDate, toDate); This doesn't work. The query is converted to respective timestamps as "2010-03-30 00:00:00" and "2010-03-31 00:00:00". So, all the records for the 31st March 2010 are ignored. A simple solution to this problem could be to have the end date as "2010-03-31 23:59:59." But, I would like to know if there is way to match only the date part of the timestamp column. Also, is Expression.between() inclusive of both limits? Documentation doesn't throw any light on this.
