  I've just built a new PostgreSQL server for my employers, which is happily replicating using WALs. I'm now left with the problem of verifying its performance. One nice way which came up in conversation is to break replication with the slave caught up and then direct all production traffic to both servers, discarding the responses from the new server and returning those from the current one to the clients. Once we're sure performance is OK, we re-sync the slave and can fail over with confidence. Bliss. This would require a TCP proxy capable of opening two outgoing connections for each incoming one, and discarding the data returned from one of them, which is a tricky thing to google for, it seems. Do the assembled brains know of such a thing, before I dive into libevent and write one?

• Access Bind9 DNS in Virtualbox on Host

  I've set up a Ubuntu 10.04 Virtual Box with a Bind9 DNS server. The Box has a NAT Network connection for internet access and a host-only adapter for static ip connections from the host (OSX Lion). Thats the only way i managed to get internet and static ip inside the box, guess there is a better one ... The DNS works fine from inside the virtualbox, but not from the host. The http and ftp on the guest system is accessible via both addresses, so connection between host and guest are fine i guess. I tried to add both IP's as name servers. I'm completely new to Bind9 and DNS configuration. Anybody has a hint for me whats wrong? Or how i have to configure the DNS server?

The scenario is as follows: For location public (employee plugging in his laptop in hotel, public wi-fi,etc) all inbound connections are restricted, only outbound VPN + www is enabled. Employee then initiates a VPN connection, VPN pushes routes to 10.0.0.0/8 subnet Now I would like to have lax security rules for traffic from/to 10.0.0.0/8 that comes through the VPN interface, while still protecting the laptop from traffic that comes via uplink interface as if it was private. • 2 x Netgear GS724T (Dual GBIC) trunking issue

  I have the following: Netgear GS724T (Firmware Version V1.0.3_35, Protocol Version - 2.001.002) 4 x Indineon ISFP GBR/FC Settings STP Function - Enabled Fast Link - Enabled Trunking port 23,24, (21,22 - RJ45 cables, but not connected.) I have connected both switches via 2 fiber cables and want to use trunking. The problem I am having. Sometimes I get a an issue when none of the switches cannot talk with each other, nor the devices, sometime they can. The problem is irregular and no patten can be determined The statistics shows that when the switches does not work, they have RX errors If I remove one to the GBIC connections, then everything works as normal.] Question Does anyone have a solution for this please? • Monitoring/logging a malfunctioning internet connection

  I have a mysterious internet connection problem: Every 15-20 minutes, the connection will become very slow, and take 2-3 minutes for anything to load. I've had a technician from the ISP over here to test the hardware, and everything is in pristine condition. They have no other explanation than a configuration error on my machine, a possibility I can exclude 90% because I'm experiencing the same problems with another machine. I will have to monitor the situation now, and I would like to run a program that logs when internet connections become slow. I thought about putting something together using at and wget. Does anybody know of some other tool for this that does this out of the box - maybe something with an adjustable request frequency, logging connection speeds etc.?

• Recommendations for a JetDirect print server for USB 2.0 printers?

  I have been using some older HP JetDirect 300x print servers for a variety of parallel printers over the years. These things work great for every printer I have tried them with, including HP's, Dell's, and even a Mountbatten braille embosser! These have been a boon for printers whose internal network cards fail, but whose parallel ports continue working. I don't have to throw away the $500 printer that is one year and a week old, and can keep using it for many, many years. Now that very few printers are coming with parallel ports, but are coming solely with USB connections and network cards. When the network card fails but the printer is still usable, I want to continue using it on the network with a JetDirect card. In summary: Does anyone have any recommendations for JetDirect cards that will work as well with USB 2.0 printers of unspecified manufacturer that my old JetDirect 300x cards do?

• Is there an apache module to slow down site scans?

  I am administering a few web servers. Each night, random hosts from the Internet are probing them for various vulnerabilities in php, phpadmin, horde, mysqladmin, etc. Is there a way (apache plugin?) to slow down the rate of attack? For SSH, I have a rate limiting rule on the firewall, which does not allow more than three connections per minute. But I don't want to rate limit all HTTP access, only the access that returns 404s. Is there such an apache module?

• Acer Aspire PC locked up and won't re-start

  Vista Home Premium locked up on 5/12/10 while on a website and could not get to 'control-alt-delete.' Mouse locked, too. On/off switch would not work (stayed lit) so I unplugged the power cord. When I tried to re-start the computer I could hear a fan running but it would not boot up, nothing on the monitor and no lights on the keyboard. O/S was preloaded so I do not have a boot disk.I tried pressing F1, F2 and F11 and also with monitor off but nothing worked. Computer has not been been moved or abused so all internal connections should be fine. Have updated Windows Vista Home Premium regularly and also updated Avira anti virus and anti malware programs regularly. Using Firefox and Vista Home Premium O/S. Computer is 2 years old and was purchased new from Best Buy.

• Unable to extend desktop

  I'm trying to hook up my TV to my computer as a gaming/multimedia center but I'm having troubles setting it up. I have a custom built machine running Windows 7 RC. It has an ATI Radeon 4800 video card with 2 dvi output and 1 S-video output. I have an s-video to composite adapter that connects to my tv. (It's an old TV with only Cable, composite, and s-video connections). I can switch the desktop to my TV without a problem, but I can't duplicate or extend my desktop onto it. I've installed the latest drivers and Catalyst Control Center, but it won't let it work any more readily than Windows would. Any suggestions? Would using an s-video cable instead of the adapter change anything? (The only reason I use the adapter is because it came with the graphics card) (Edit) I installed the latest drivers and I can now duplicate the screen (show on one monitor and on the TV), but I still can't extend the desktop.

I thought I would install SQL2008 SP1, but after install I cannot connect to SQL via Management Studio, and in configuration manager I cannot start SQL? • Clever recording using AVFoundation

  Hello I am working on my master thesis and I am programming app for iOS using AVFoundation framework. I can make by myself session and attach devices to it and record video with sound. The main problem is that I need continous recording (3hours or longer). After three hours user will stop recording and user will choose time eg. 15 mins (max 30 mins) and only this last 15 mins will be stored to iphone memory. Is it possible to 'cut' video while recording or should I record it eg. in 10 minutes block and then delete old video segments and last two segments connect to one bigger? Will perform these connections (stop recording, start new recording and then connect these two segments) lags in final long video segment? Is there any way to perform this 'clever' recording? Thank you for any ideas.

I have an issue because they come from svchost.exe and go to web content/application delivery providers - or similar: 5 IP in range: 82.96.58.0 - 82.96.58.255 --> Akamai Technologies akamaitechnologies.com 3 IP in range: 93.150.110.0 - 93.158.111.255 --> Akamai Technologies akamaitechnologies.com 2 IP in range: 87.248.194.0 - 87.248.223.255 --> LLNW Europe 2 llnw.net 205.234.175.175 --> CacheNetworks, Inc. cachefly.net 188.121.36.239 --> Go Daddy Netherlands B.V. secureserver.net So is it possible to know which service does a particular connection? • Multiple interfaces to one IP address?

  At present, I have: a Netgear router with DHCP off at 192.168.0.1 my computer eth0 at 192.168.0.2 wlan0 at 192.168.0.2 The wlan0 interface always connects to the router, while the eth0 interface connects to other computers with crossover and acts as a dnsmasq DHCP server for network boot and installation. If I use the Gnome NetworkManager to enable both connections, that is, with wlan0 connected to the router/internet and eth0 to another computer, both as 192.168.0.2, I cannot access the internet while eth0 is connected. Why is this? How can I configure my computer to follow wlan0 for Internet usage, but use eth0 for itself (the latter is working but blocking wlan0).

• Remote Desktop Services In A Virtual VMWare Environment

  I have a quick question regarding Microsoft Remote Desktop Services in a virtualized environment using VMWare. This environment will actually be hosted in a large data center with in a cloud that is offered. This particular data center has the ability to establish high speed point to point connections with customers via metro-ethernet who are hosted in the cloud. The result is that customers can actually host their corporate domain in the data center's cloud. Put the merits of such a configuration aside for the time being. Believe me when I say that the cloud is stable and had enough hardware behind it to rival a dedicated cabinet. My question has to do with RDS in a virtual environment, which would amount to virtual desktops hosted on a virtual server. I've read that this works without issue using Hyper-V and VMWare. But before I take the plunge I wanted to get some feedback from the community.

• Exploratory Question for Security Admins (/etc/passwd + PHP)

  Hi everyone, I've been seeing a few issues lately on a few of my servers where an account gets hacked via outdated scripts, and the hacker uploads a cPanel / FTP Brute forcing PHP script inside the account. The PHP File reads /etc/passwd to get the usernames, and than uses a passwd.txt file to try and brute force it's way in to 127.0.0.1:2082. I'm trying to think of a way to block this. It doesn't POST anything except "GET /path/phpfile.php", so I can't use mod_security to block this. I've been thinking of maybe changing permissions on /etc/passwd to 600, however I'm unsure how this will result in regards to my users. I was also thinking of rate-limiting localhost connections to :2082, however I'm worried about mod_proxy being affected. Any suggestions?

• PSAD Firewall/ UDP flood?

  Well I'm actually trying to block a UDP Flood on the Application port because the string "getstatus" is causing my application to make large output due to a small input to the attacker's IP. I installed PSAD firewall to do the job. psad -S shows 3000,000 logged packets at the application port and top ports in Scan but does not block the IP of the attacker however other IP Addresses with small number of connections are dropped. I'm thinking that since output is also being made to the attacker, this is why its not getting blocked because iptables rate-limiting is also exactly doing the same thing and not blocking the IP where outgoing connection is also made. Any guesses why it won't work?

• Laptop HDMI out to monitor DVI in

  I have a laptop that i'm trying to fix, and it has HDMI out. I have a cable i bought for my HTPC which does DVI out to HDMI in, which worked fine. Was hoping to be able to use this same cable for HDMI out to DVI in, is it possible? UPDATE: Point of clarification, The laptop's display doesn't work (it was dropped) and I'm trying to figure out what's working and what isn't. in addition to HDMI out, it has VGA out, but that seems to have a short in it, and doesn't display properly (sometimes it works, sometimes, it shows stuff in 256 colors in 800x640). I can tell the LCD screen works (comes on) so i think it's whatever is carrying the data to it that doesn't work. I know more often than know, the display is what breaks... The cable i'm using is a standard HDMI to DVI cable, there are no audio connections or anything. Thanks!

I'm actually interested in doing the opposite: Sharing my landline internet connection(which is much faster than any 3G service) with by cellphone. My phone is a Verizon BlackBerry Curve 8330 and it has USB and bluetooth connections. I know both USB and Bluetooth are capable of supporting tcp/ip traffic what's not so clear is: Is IP over USB or Bluetooth standardized? Is it supported on my phone? Has my cellphone company crippled my phone to prevent me from using it?

• Selecting primary Internet connection in Windows XP

  There is a computer that has access to the Internet both via the local network and by a GSM modem. As far as I know, when both connections are active, the modem connection is the primary one and all data is transmitted by the modem. Because of the fact that the slow modem connection is supposed to be used as a backup connection, I want Windows to use it only when the connection via LAN is unavailable. At the same time I want the GSM modem connection to be active constantly. Is it possible to make Windows not use modem connection when there is a working LAN Internet connection? • Why does WebDAV fail from inside home network

  On my OSX server there is a folder that is configured in the Server App to be accessible via WebDAV. This folder is used to sync OmniFocus. On my router, I have set up a dynamic dns. When I am outside my home network (physically away or when connected via a vpn), I can connect and sync fine via: https://<server name from dyndns>/<username>/<path to WebDAV folder> However, when I am in my home network, the connection to WebDAV does not work (other connections, AFP, f.ex, do work). What could be some reasons why I can't connect to WebDAV from within my home network? What log files could give hints and where are they stored? I am running OSX server 10.9.3. and server.app. Thanks for your help.

• FTP transfer timeouts while uploading small files

  I have this problem that when I need to transfer some files (mostly small files < 100KB) the connections time out. Well actually it uploads one file and it fails on the next until my client reconnects to the server and the same thing happens over and over again. I googled the problem and some said that switching from passive mode to active mode could solve the it but it didn't work for me. Even continuously pinging the server to keep the connection alive was to no avail. P.S. I have root access to the server. Update: I'm running ProFTPD on a CentOS vps. I tried a few clients (FireFTP, FileZilla) all having the same problem.

(provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)" Looking in the log file: ( I assume this is the acutal error making it STOP) Installed SQL Server 2005 Backward Compatibility version is 8.05.1054 Error: SQL Server 2005 Backward Compatibility is not installed or its version is not high enough. SQL Server 2005 Backward Compatability SP2 or higher must be installed. I have installed SQLServer2005_BC_x64.msi from MS, and cant seem to find this SP2 version. SQL server is a 2008 R2 SP1. I have also tested with a 2008 SP3 SQL server same error. Named pippes output via ( OSQL /L) SQL-2008-1 SQL2
