• Pantheon Not Completely Installed?

  I have just installed the pantheon shell today, and I have not found any help with this yet. I am not just a random noob, i use a bunch of other shells and i also have a few development applications on my copy of ubuntu. But ever since ive opened up pantheon, i cannot find settings or this thing called the launchpad. (if the launchpad is the app drawer up in the upper left corner, or if its the dock. i have it, if thats not what launchpad is, then i cant access it.) I can only change my wallpaper by going back to unity, gnome, or KDE. There is a system settings in the power menu (upper right), but it only has Language Support, Ubuntu One, Additional Drivers, And Printing. I can still access the full ubuntu settings in GNOME of Unity. But thats it. I installed in the terminal, uninstalled, and reinstalled using the software center. Please Help Me If Any Of You Can! • Can I replace my notebook's fan without replacing the heat sink?

  My laptop (Acer Travelmate 8204) has started making a grinding noise, which seems to be coming from the fan (not the hard drive). Some articles online mention replacing the fan, but others imply that one should replace both the fan and the heat sink. Does it make sense to replace the fan only? (addendum: does this procedure really take 3 hours for a noob, as this video implies? UPDATE: the fan certainly seems to be on the "top" layer when I open my laptop but some parts of it extend under other layers) Some additional info in response to comments: I have run MS scandisk on the hard drive a few times since the grinding started. It usually reports finding something or other but the computer's behavior doesn't change I'm pretty sure it's the fan based on where the noise is coming from. I employed the cardboard tube trick from the PC World article.

• I'm the .1x programmer at my company. How can I best contribute?

  I work at a newly-minted startup of five people. We have a Ph. D in machine learning, a former member of the RSpec core team, and the guy who compiles the Git binary for OS X. That's just the employees; the founder has a Ph. D and was CTO for a multi-billion-dollar corporation before leaving to start a (successful) startup, and has now left that to start this one. We also might get a guy with a Ph. D in math. Aaaaaaaaand then there's me, college-dropout intern. I think I'm pretty smart and I'm reading non-stop, but the delta of experience, skill, and knowledge between me and my co-workers is just breathtaking. So put yourself in their shoes: you've got a bright young intern who has a lot to learn but is at least energetic. What would be annoying? What use would you hope to get out of him in the here and now? What would be pleasantly surprising if it happened?

• WGet from one site on a server to another site on the same server

  Hey all, I've recently been asked to administer a couple ubuntu boxes running web servers. I'm a dev by trade so if this question is fairly noob please forgive. We have about a dozen sites running on this box. 2 of our sites need to talk back and forth over a restful api. Unfortunately we are having issues with the sited connection to each other via wget. When we try and run wget manually from the command line from the server pointing to a site also on that server it hangs and eventually times out. If we do the same thing from outside the server to the same site on the server it works. Is there something that could be preventing sites on the same server from communicating with each other? The same thing happens pinging the site from the server.

• How to join the World of Programming? [closed]

  Name's Vlad and I am currently on my third year of Community College, studying Computer Science with emphasis on Programming in C++ and Networking. I have completed a few programming courses with general ease, but have not gained advanced understanding of programming through school. None of my friends are serious programmers working in the industry. Being an active lurker on many programming websites, and in general tech oriented sites I have noticed how little I know about the industry, the lingo and terminology. (I have no clue how Git hub works, but I generally understand what its for). So I am looking for help as to where I should look for information on the programming world and the industry in which I a very interested. By that I mean, what sites I should utilize to gain information on programming practices, introduction to advanced C++ and resources that simply introduce a 20some programming noob. I like programming, but I haven't dug my hands deep into it yet, I want to start to do so before I transfer to a University. • VPN IPsec site 2 site and static routing

  Hello everybody experts! My question is pretty simple, but I can't figure it out because I'm pretty noob with these network stuffs. I have a vpn IPsec site2site between 2 lan with different ip classes, LAN A is class C and LAN B is class A. The vpn presents the LAN A to LAN B with the 10.178.51.64/27 segment. The problem is that when I start the vpn connection I cant Ping any 10.174.0.0/24 address(LAN B remote segment) from my LAN A; I think I need some kind of static route. Could u help me out pls? • Can't get Unity 3D to work in 11.10

  I recently upgraded to 11.10 on my Lenovo ThinkPad T520, and I'm not able to load Unity 3D (I'm not selecting 2D at login menu either). me@mycomp:~$ echo $DESKTOP_SESSION ubuntu-2d I ran the unity support test below as well. me@mycomp:~$ /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".   Java.net, the home of  Java community projects, has been re-launched with a new look and new tools for developers.  The move from CollabNet to the Kenai infrastructure offers more flexibility for developers who want to host or contribute to community projects.  Instead of the large, fixed infrastructure per project (for example, several mailing lists per project), Kenai's ala carte features allow users to take only what they need. "We will continue to have the great mix of blogs, forums, and editorial content as well as new tools on the project side, including Mercurial, Git, and JIRA for developers," Java.net Community Manager Sonya Barry explains. The migration was huge effort. Over 1400 projects were migrated (and some 30 projects are left to go). A large part of the migration was a big cleanup of abandoned projects. With the high abandonment rate of open source projects, the was a lot to remove. • Pages partially load on rapid refresh

  I recently set up a VPS slice with 256MB to run a LAMP stack (Ubuntu 11.04, Apache2, Mysql, PHP5). So far I'm only running a simple Wordpress site on an IP-based virtual host I set up. The performance is excellent, but I've noticed that if I send multiple HTTP requests from the same IP in a short time period, only partial pages are rendered. Then if I wait a bit and refresh the page, the entire page loads again. I noticed this behaviour when accessing the site from two browsers from my office desktop, but it also presents itself if I quickly navigate the site from a single browser (any browser). I'm guessing this is an Apache phenomenon, as the pages are rendered correctly except under the conditions above, but perhaps I'm wrong here. Could it be my hosting company with some kind of DOS protection in place? As a relative Linux/server noob, I'd really appreciate any insight into what settings in Apache could explain this behaviour, and how I might go about changing it.

• Animating sprites in HTML5 canvas

  I'm creating a 2D platformer game with HTML5 canvas and javascript. I'm having a bit of a struggle with animations. Currently I animate by getting preloaded images from an array, and the code is really simple, in player.update() I call a function that does this: var animLength = this.animations[id].length; this.counter++; this.counter %= 3; if (this.counter == 2) this.spriteCounter++; this.spriteCounter %= animLength; return this.animations[id][this.spriteCounter]; There are a couple of problems with this one: When the player does 2 actions that require animating at the same time, animation speed doubles. Apparently this.counter++ is working twice at the same time. I imagine that if I start animating multiple sprites with this, the animation speed will multiply by the amount of sprites. Other issue is that I couldn't make the animation run only once instead of looping while key is held down. Someone told me that I should create a function Animation(animation id, isLooped boolean) and the use something like player.sprite = new Animation("explode", false) but I don't know how to make it work. Yes I'm a noob... :)

• Headphones not working in ubuntu 12.04LTS

  So after a million warnings about not supported ubuntu OS, last night I finally upgraded to 12.04 - went somewhat smoothly (sadly) After my installation I got all excited with the exciting new look when I login, and all the new shebang, gently I installed chrome and went to youtube to check out some of my music and test flash in the process, now the sound worked awesomely, however when I plugged in my headphones, I could hear only a buzz-like sound when the base drops or there is a loud noise, maybe I didn't hear it from the headphones, but some other source. However sadly my headphones are not working, and I am a noob at fixing these stuff on Ubuntu. I've done loads of programming but when it comes to linux drivers and settings I seem to get frustrated. So I would really appreciate any help people! IN SUMMARY: My headphones are not working, my laptop's internal speakers are working awesome. To be as helpful as I can I have pasted the output from lspci -v to http://pastebin.com/VQNzDkZs I have also checked the volume levels from alsamixer and none are on mute. If you need any more information, please just ask, and I will be checking this post every 3 to 4 hours! Cheers!

Actually, I have made the desktop recording and I have some shorts videos in mp4 format to work with it. • Distributing a very simple application

  I have a very simple working console application written in C++ linked with a light static library. It is just for testing purposes. Now that the coding part is done, I would like to know the process of actually distributing the program. I wrote a very basic CMakeLists.txt that create makefiles or VS projects to build the sources. I also have a program that calls the static library in order to make some google tests. To me, the distribution of this application goes like this : to developpers : the src directory with the CMakeLists.txt file (multi-platform distribution) with a README.txt and an INSTALL.txt to users : the executable and a README.txt on my git repo : everything mentionned above plus the sources for testing and the gtest external lib A this point : considering the complexity of my application, am I doing it right ? Is there any reference that would formalize this distribution process so I can get better and go further ? Say I would like to add dynamic libraries that can be updated, external libraries like boost : how should I package this to distribute it in a professionnal way ?

• Scp only a specific folder

  Some command line syntax I don't know how to set, am a noob sometimes, sorry is that's obvious Let's says I have the following path for all my assets : /var/www/site/system/images/{image_id}/{format}/{file}.{extension} Inside the {image_id} folder, I have multiple formats (original, medium, thumb, etc...). I only want to import the /var/www/site/system/images/{image_id}/original folder, and keep the structure locally scp -r username@server:/var/www/site/system/images/*/original ~/Site/site/system/images This one does get it all, but all the files end up in the same and unique folder, no structure. I'd like to keep the structure. Is there something to do for it ?

• Is there any CSS selector to reach an element outside of the current container?

I'm following a tuto from codrops to visually filter works with only css3 (http://tympanus.net/codrops/2012/01/09/filter-functionality-with-css3/). There, user can select which category want to see with some <input type="radio">'s. But those selectors are under the same container (a <section>) and give visibility for the elements via CSS using a general sibling combinator (~). • External monitor on old Dell 700m?

  Okay, linux noob. I installed 10.04 on an old Dell 700m in hopes of using it as a media center device. That seems to work great, except now it won't output to the external monitor. VGA cable works fine, TV recognizes other computers fine, it's the laptop that won't output. Turns out that the 700m, unlike every other computer out there, doesn't have a Fn hotkey to switch monitors. The only way to do it in Windows was to go through the Control Panel. In Ubuntu, though, the Monitor setup won't detect or recognize any monitors. The laptop display works fine, but I can't adjust or add anything. I did a little research and found suggestions for older Ubuntu builds involving the xorg.conf. I tried one out, in spite of my unfamiliarity, and it's screwed the whole display big time. I can fix that with a clean reinstall, that's no problem, but I'm cautious about editing xorg again. Any suggestions? Thank you!

• Windows Recovery from Grub messed up my computer?

  Ok so I'm a noob when it comes to Operating Systems and I think I really messed up this time. So I have a laptop that dual boots Windows 7 and Linux Mint 11. I was trying to boot into Windows 7 but it would just have a black screen with a blinking cursor. So I turned off my computer and tried again. Still a black screen with a cursor. So I thought "well it must be broken somehow and I remembered seeing something like 'Windows Recovery' from the boot menu so I should try it." So when I turned on my computer a third time I selected 'Windows Recovery' (Something like that I can't remember exactly what it was called). After I had selected that I got a white Windows window that said in big red letters "ERROR". I turned off my computer again a turned it back on expecting the Grub menu to reappear. I was wrong. Instead I am greeted with error: no such partition grub rescue. Then I put in a live CD for ubuntu 11.04 and tried looking at my partitions using the disk manager. Looking at my partitions I notice that there isn't a Linux partition anymore and in its place is a unallocated space partition yet the Linux Swap partition is still there. My windows partition is still fine and I can access the files in it. If you understand what has happened, is there anyway I can get my files back? I don't care about reinstalling the OS again. I just want those files that are in the Linux Mint partition.

• Java login through LDAP

  I am starting to write an application for our office and the first step is authentication through LDAP where all users already exist. Everything I need is a code in Java to check if the pair <nick,password> is right. Google found me many links, but I think that I will find here the most sofisticate, short and up to date solution (I don't want to read all articles like 2 whole days to do something so simple). I have written many dkBs of code in C++, but in Java I am total noob and I haven't coded anything with LDAP yet so try to be simple if speaking in Java and LDAP terms if possible.

• When is it appropriate to use colour in a command-line application?

  Currently I have a command-line application in C called btcwatch. It has a -C option that it can receive as an argument that compares the current price of Bitcoin with a price that was stored beforehand with -S. Example output with this option is: $ btcwatch -vC # -v = verbose buy: UP $ 32.000000 USD (100.000000 -> 132.000000) sell: UP $ 16.000000 USD (100.000000 -> 116.000000) The dilemma is whether to use colour for the UP or DOWN string (green and red, respectively). Most command-line applications I know of (apart from git) stay away from colour in their output. In my desire for btcwatch to look and be quite "standard" (use of getopt, Makefiles, etc), I'm not sure if colour would look out of place in this situation.

• Cross-platform builds with OGRE3D via CMake. Any tips?

  I've been trying to compile a simple project for both OSX and Windows platforms, using OGRE3D, but I've got some problems on the way. I'm using CMake to create my platform specific project files (VS solution & Xcode project). Some problems I found are: OGRE3D source is distributed in 2 flavors, Windows sources and UNIX/OSX sources. In OSX, compiling dependencies (freetype, FreeImage and specially OIS) is such a pain. I don't know how to handle precompiled dependencies (they exist for both Win & Mac). May sound like a noob question, but I would appreciate some tips on this. Resources, forum posts, anything. There exists any "cross-platform base project for OGRE3D" on the net? Would be really helpful if someone who already managed to do this can bring some light. Btw, I'm not basing the project on OGRE3D, it's just that is the biggest library I'm probably using, so I depend a lot on it. Thanks in advantage!

• Google Analytics custom variables and how are they recorded?

  I have been asked to add GA custom variable tracking to my company's website. The company website uses server side includes, so making modifications to the tracking code happens identically everywhere. Maintenance is therefore a headache. Also, GA takes about twenty-four hours for custom variables to start showing up in reports and that makes troubleshooting a headache. So if you have custom variables // visitor level tracking, id = 12345 _gaq.push(['_setCustomVar', 1, 'id', '12345', 1]); // page level tracking, email = [email protected] _gaq.push(['_setCustomVar', 1, 'email', '[email protected]', 1]); The marketing people want the following out of this: User visits site and we record a unique id for them. Whenever they return this id will be used in GA. User signs up for our newsletter on page X and we record their email address. Whenever they return this email address is used in GA. Now a big problem for me is that I don't use GA and the marketing people don't use custom variables. So we don't actually know how this will work. Do I want Page, Session or Visitor level tracking? What happens because the same GA code is used on every page? If they visit the email sign up form and we record the email address, but then they go somewhere else where email is nonexistent will the value get 'overwritten.' Sorry for the long question, but there are a lot of unknowns for a GA noob.

• Cisco 1760 T1 Setup

  My 1760 has a WIC1-T1 card in Slot 0 and the slot 0 "OK" light is lit. When the router boots it shows that it sees the T1 card. I would like to configure my T1. I received the following details from my ISP: * Removed IP's IP Version: IPv4 Router Interface: edge1.mia1 -- t1-2/1/0:2:13 -- Switch Port: Vlan: WAN Network: 4.59.?.?/30 Level3 Side: 4.59.?.? Customer Side: 4.59.?.? Cust. LAN IPs: 4.59.?.?/27 The problem is that it is not listed under interfaces. I am a noob with IOS, please let me know if you need more details. Thanks.

• error/message: the disk drive for /home is not ready... when connecting an external hard drive

  i am running Ubuntu 10.04 all updated installed to date (3/28/2012) and when i connect another sata HD i get this message the disk drive for /home is not ready yet or not present continue to wait, or press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery so i press S but i get this message could not update ICEauthority file /home/username/.ICEauthority And when a press close i get this there is a problem with the configuration server (/usr/libconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256) And when a press close i get message Nautilus could not create the following required folders :/home/username/desktop,/home/username/.Nautilus before running Nautilus, please create these folders or set permissons such that Nautilus can reach them And finally when a press Ok at the last message it disappears and i get a blank screen with a lot of colors on it and with nothing else so i shutdown (power button ) and disconnect the HD and boot without problems so how to fix this in simple commands because i am a total Linux noob notes -In the original error my username was in place of username i wrote (did not want to confuse anybody ) -I tried searching for this problem but a got a lot of different answers and most of them were really complicated to me and not working -I got a data HD connected and working without problems also the HD i installed Ubuntu on is Sata (maybe it helps) -Apologize for me bad English its not my mother language
