  • How to make using command prompt less painful

    I want to learn to use the command prompt better on Windows to have more control over what I do and just for the learning experience. The main annoyance I have right now is all of the typing. If I want to perform an operation on a file with a large path I'm sitting there typing it out for a minute at least, and if I make a mistake I have to press the up arrow key and scroll through the entire thing and find what I did wrong. Is there any tools to make this easier?

  • Is there a way to create a script/BAT that changes my desktop image... if so how? [duplicate]

    This question already has an answer here: How do I set the desktop background on Windows from a script? 4 answers Okay so I just got this program that lets me lock my PC screen (this info doesn't matter much) anyways... You can run files when the program starts/locks and closes/unlocks. What I would like to do is create a script/bat that changes my desktop background to an image when I click "lock" and another script to change the desktop image when I "unlock". Is there a simple script or BAT file that someone knows of that does this??? or knows how to do this??? I would like to be able to modify it myself so it is the picture I would like to be selected. So all I would do is change the file directory of the image used on the background in the BAT file/script. EDIT: Thank you for the link! It hleped out a bit but I still have one question...   • Color in Cygwin terminal

    I've installed cygwin because I'm a bit fed up with the Windows terminal not being great. The only problem I'm having is the lack of colours. You can see the problem in the following 2 screenshots that display the same command: All I want is something which has a nice font, resizes properly (including proper behaviour when maximised) and support for colours. Ideally I'd like tabs too. This seems like a silly reason to end up buying a mac, so I'm hoping I can get all these things on windows somehow.

  • Using cd to go up multiple directory levels

    I'm dealing with java projects which often result in deeply nested folders (/path/to/project/com/java/lang/whatever, etc) and sometimes want to be able to jump, say, 4 directory levels upwards. Typing cd ../../../.. is a pain, and I don't want to symlink. Is there some flag to cd that lets you go up multiple directory levels (in my head, it would be something like cd -u 4)? Unfortunately I can't find any man page for cd specifically, instead just getting the useless "builtins" page.

  • What is a good way to get back to the command prompt discarding STDOUT and STDERR

    I often launch applications from the cli via e.g. command & to immediately get back to the prompt back. The downside of this is, that I still get STDOUT and STDERR. So I use command &> /dev/null to discard those outputs. This can get quite a chore, when having to write this often during a day. So my question is, is there a better (read shorter) way to discard of STDOUT and STDERR when not needed? What could be done? write a wrapper script to launch applications? What would be an elegant way to do this?

    This I understand: net use P: \\SOME_COMPUTER\SOME_SHARE net use P: \\1.2.3.4\SOME_SHARE (the second argument is a logical share on the given computer) This, I do NOT understand: net use LPT2: IP_1.2.3.4 (where IP_1.2.3.4 is the name of a "port" assigned to a printer; the IP is a valid and responding device, but the full string "IP_1.2.3.4" is not) Can anyone tell me, is there ever a syntax of NET USE that could operate on a printer port like that? I can't get it to work, can't find anything via Google, and am practically in tears. [Sorry if this is cheating, this is basically a re-post of http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1884235/old-school-windows-2000-printing-or-when-is-a-port-name-a-computer but with the scope narrowed just to the main issue at hand.

  • Supporting Piping (A Useful Hello World)

    I am trying to write a collection of simple C++ programs that follow the basic Unix philosophy by: Make each program do one thing well. Expect the output of every program to become the input to another, as yet unknown, program. I'm having an issue trying to get the output of one to be the input of the other, and getting the output of one be the input of a separate instance of itself. Very briefly, I have a program add which takes arguments and spits out the summation. I want to be able to pipe the output to another add instance. ./add 1 2 | ./add 3 4 That should yield 6 but currently yields 10. I've encountered two problems: The cin waits for user input from the console. I don't want this, and haven't been able to find a simple example showing a the use of standard input stream without querying the user in the console. If someone knows of an example please let me know. I can't figure out how to use standard input while supporting piping. Currently, it appears it does not work. If I issue the command ./add 1 2 | ./add 3 4 it results in 7. The relevant code is below: add.cpp snippet // ...     Hi, I am using busybox shell to execute a script which the bash executes when i boot linux using the nfs. Please let me know the correct alternative for this line. cur_major=$((0x`stat -c %t $dev 2>/dev/null`)) The busybox throws in an error saying "0x" syntax error, which i understand is the problem with the syntax of this line.     We are currently distributing a WinForms app without .pdb files to conserve space on client machines and download bandwidth. When we get stack traces, we are getting method names but not line numbers. Is there any way to get the line numbers without resorting to distributing the .pdb files?
