  • Protecting DNS entries from duplicate hostnames entering network

    Given a Windows domain, with DNS provided by a server on that domain, I am curious about what happens if a guest joins the network attempting to use the same hostname as an existing server, and then tries to register that hostname in DNS with its DHCP address. Can this potentially be disruptive to the server, or is Windows DNS smart enough to spot a duplicate hostname and deny an auto-register request from that host? What actions can be taken to ensure that DNS for a hostname cannot be altered?

  • Prevent server from accessing network share

    I have built a test environment I want to isolate from my production servers. As part of this I want to prevent my new server from accessing file/network shares on production. For example prevent it from accessing \\MyProdServer I updated my host file with 0.0.0.0 MyProdServer However this doesn’t work I can still access the files. I do not have firewall available nor do I want to edit my production server in anyway.

  • NetworkManager applet looks like it can't see network

    My system is Ubuntu 9.04. There is NetworkManager applet, but it looks like there are no networks. When I click it, there is disabled menu "Wired Network/device not managed". I have working eth0 interface, internet is working fine and I can see eth0 in ifconfig When I right-click and choose "Edit connections", there is only "Auto vboxnet0" under "Wired" tab. No "eth0". It shouldn't be a problem, but I cannot connect to VPN because of this :(

  • LDAP over SSL with an EFI Fiery printer

    I've got a printer with a Fiery running 8e Release 2. I can authenticate users against AD using the LDAP configuration, but I can only get it to work if I don't use SSL/TLS, and only if I use SIMPLE authentication. Right now, it's authenticating using a fairly low-impact user, but it's also the only system on our network that's not using LDAPS. I can get AD info fine over LDAPS using ldp.exe from my machine, our firewall, our mail filter, our linux boxes, etc. The only problem child is the Fiery. I've added the LDAP server certificate as a trusted cert to the Fiery, but after I check the box for Secure Communication and change the port to 636, pressing Validate results in a dialog box coming up saying: LDAP Validation Failed Server Name invalid or server is unavailable. I've tried changing the server name to use just the name, the FQDN, and the IP address, and changed it to another server, just to see if it was just this AD server that was fussy with the Fiery. EDIT: removed LDP output, added packet capture analysis from wireshark: The conversation seems pretty normal to me, up to the point where the Fiery terminates the connection after the server sends back a handshake response. Maybe they messed up their TLS implementation? I'm trying support, but it's been fairly useless so far. The cert is a SHA-2 (sha256RSA) 2048-bit certificate. Also, it looks like the Fiery is specifying TLS 1.0. Looking at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa374757(v=vs.85).aspx, I'm not seeing SHA256 and TLS 1.0 combination being supported by SChannel. headdesk perhaps that's why, after the DC changes the cipher spec, the connection is terminated by the Fiery?   • removing the .local in local network name serving

    I have several local machines; I use a OSX 10.6 machine to do most of the serving. Annoyingly, it postfixes its network name with .local. How would I set up a system so that I could access it by its hostname? server: httpd apache2 default install I am accessing it with a web browser(surprisingly). also when I ping my osx machine as name, it doesn't work; ping name.local does work.

  • Unable to connect to MSN network with Adium

    I'm new to the Mac world and tried both MSN Messenger for Mac (7.0 and 8.0 beta) as well as Adium to connect to the Windows network. I've enable 'Allow all incoming connections' in the Firewall settings. Windows Live Messenger works fine when connecting through the same router on my Windows laptop. I've triple checked my password and verified it through a web browser and Windows Live. Any ideas what my issue could be?

Whenever I do this, it seems to slow down the network and other users complain that browsing websites and accessing files on the dev server is slow.   • UltraSurf not working, used to work on same network (and is working fine on friend's computer on same network)

    I'm using UltraSurf (10.17), it used to work fine but now its not working on my computer (Windows 7) and the window keeps showing "Connecting Server..." and after sometime, it fails to establish the connection. While, its working perfectly on the friend's computer on the same network. Any help will be appreciated. (Please note that using Proxifier would be my last option if I can't get UltraSurf working anyway).
