  • How can I optimize my development machine's files and directories? [closed]

    Like any programmer, I've got a lot of stuff on my machine. Some of that stuff is projects of my own, some are projects I'm working on for my employer, others are open-source tools and projects, etc. Currently, I have my files organized as follows: /Code --/development (things I'm sort of hacking on plus maybe libraries used in other projects) --/scala (organized by language...why? I don't know!) --/android --/ruby --/employer_name -- /mobile --/android --/ios --/open-source (basically my forks that I'm pushing commits back upstream from) --/some-awesome-oss-project --/another-awesome-one --/tools random IDE settings sprinkled in here plus some other apps As you can see, things are kind of a mess here. How can I keep things organized in some sort of coherent fashion?

    I was testing port connectivity on my machine because WoW (which uses TCP ports 3724, 6112, and 6881-6999) couldn't connect to the Internet. So I downloaded PFPortChecker application and ran it using Wine (v1.3). After I tried to check every port, it seems like they're not reachable/closed. Why is that? My firewall is disabled so why is this happening? How can I open these ports and how can I see if these ports are opened or not? Also, how can I determine which application is using them?

    I connect from a OSGi bundle deployed on Apache ServiceMix to a Weblogic Server to call some EJBs. The lookup happens with JNDI. In my unit test everything works fine. But when a deploy the bundle on ServiceMix a CommunicationException exception is raised on JNDI ContextFactory initialisation. Here are the details: I built a desktop that has been running 64-bit Vista on two 500Gb in a RAID 1 array for a few years. I just purchased an Intel X25-M 80Gb Sata Solid-State Drive, and was planning on using this a my primary drive, and keeping the RAID 1 array as my data drive. I added the SSD drive and in the RAID setup, configured it as a RAID 0 array of only one disk. Then, I tried to do a clean install of windows 7 64-bit, but got stuck in the "Missing driver for CD/DVD drive" black hole of selecting driver files and Windows telling me that i don't have the appropriate driver for my hardware. The missing hardware is NOT a CD/DVD drive, since i'm installing off of my only CD/DVD drive. Plus at one point i was able to point it at a driver for my raid controller, and then my hard drives magically showed up as browsable sources for finding drivers for some other unnamed device that setup couldn't recognize. After a few hours of trying drivers (this was a very slow process) i decided to reboot and look at the BIOS settings. I'm using an ASUS M2A-VM motherboard which has an ATI SB600 RAID controller on board. I switched the "On board SATA Type" setting from "SATA" to "AHCI" thinking that since AHCI is an Intel thing, this would help. Unfortunately, this abandoned my RAID configuration, and my previously mirrored drives are showing up as separate drives when i boot into my current windows installation. Am i trying to do the impossible here? Should i just buy a separate SATA/RAID PCI card and plug the SSD into that? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A SQL Server 2008 SDK would be ideal, but I could not find where to download it.     We are moving to an environment with multiple engines of MS SQL running on the same server (a test engine and a production engine). We also have separate test and production web servers, and would like for our asp.net applications to "magically" use the test database engine on the test web server and the production database engine on the production web servers. We would like to store the connection strings in machine.config rather than in web.config, but when we put it in machine.config, visual studio's IDE (particularly with datasets) does not recognize that the machine.config contains the connection. Does anyone know of a solution for displaying these machine.config connection strings in visual studio, or of a different solution that would accommodate for this? Thanks.

    I purchased a license and used Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit OS for a while. But recently I bought a 64 bit version to take advantage of the larger RAM the machine had and hence reinstalled the OS and activated a new license for the 64-bit version. Now, I am in a need to install the 32 bit version on another machine. How do I go about reactivating a license on another machine? (again the license currently is not used) Am I going to have issues with Microsoft not letting me reactivate that license on a different machine? Thank you.

    I was wondering how one might extract the current state of the registry, of Windows XP, in C or C++? (While the OS is active). I been trying to use BackupRead() on the registry-files, but it is impossible to CreateFile() them. I managed to create a Shadow Copy of the registry-files, but it wasn't the current state of the registry. Would appreciate any hint... (I know ERUNT is able to do it) Thanks, Doori Bar

    Can I connect to a 64 bit mysql server from a 32 bit machine with 32 bit mysql client lib? I mean the server is 64 bit version and running on an 64 bit machine and the client app is running on an 32 bit machine with the 32 bit mysql client lib. Is that OK? Or it will cause some problems? I don't have two machine so I can't do the test, can some tell me the answer? Thank you!

    I want to do regular automatic backup of my vmware virtual machine (16GB big, Windows XP) that is running I do not have an access to ESX admin. I can ask our admin to set up something in the admin area but I do not have access for myself. I have installed few programs that are important to me so I want to have working backup at any point of time. Note: I know I can copy all the files when the virtual machine is not up and running.
