• Use linefeed or carriage return in Subversion commit message from the command line

  I am using Subversion 1.6.6 on Ubuntu 10.04. I would like to insert a carriage return, or linefeed, or newline into my commit message so that when reading the log, the comments are formatted appropriately. It works fine when I use the system editor, or specify a file for the commit comment, but what I really want is to be able to do something like the following: svn ci -m "This is the first line\nThis is the second line" and have the comment presented as: This is the first line This is the second line My example does not work, it produces output: This is the first line\nThis is the second line So, is there a way to do this? If so, how?

• Preventing a confirmation pop-up when updating fields in Word

  In Word 2007, an obvious candidate for updating all the fields in a range is myrange.Fields.Update But if the range is the element of ActiveDocument.StoryRanges corresponding to the footnotes, endnotes or comments, this triggers a confirmation pop-up “Word cannot undo this action. Do you want to continue?” What is this pop-up telling me about? How do I get rid of it (if it's not important)? An obvious workaround is to iterate over the fields and call each field's Update method. It doesn't fire up that question. • Is it possible to use the MMM tool without virtual IP capability?

  We are on a host (Serverbeach) that does not support Virtual/floating IPs until you reserve at least a half-rack, which is just a little more than we are willing to spend per month right now. We do have 2 machines in one of their datacenters, and I am using these 2 machines right now in the Master-Master in Active-Passive Mode just like done by MMM -- http://mysql-mmm.org/. I have just set them up and I managing them manually, with manual switch on the Web frontend to tell it to connect to the correct (active) master. Is there any way to use MMM without virtual IPs? Any other comments on this setup?

• X11Forwarding on MacOSX (Leopard/Snow Leopard)

  Hi, I have some remote boxes, which are a bunch of Mac Mini's. I access them now through SSH, and it fits my needs to do the maintenance. In the past, I used X11Forwarding with Linux boxes, when I was still using Debian myself, and I was able to run a specific application as if it was natively present (Firefox). I haven't succeeded to do this yet, but I assume because of the BSD underneath the fancy Apple GUI should be able to do such a task similar. I am aware of the remote administration, but I rather keep access limited to SSH on these boxes for inbound connections. Background information about the why's, tips, advice and comments are all helpful! Thanks!

• chroot'ing SSH home directories, shell problem.

  Hi folks, I am trying to chroot my SSH users to their home directories and it seems to work.. in a strange way. Here is what I have in my sshd_config: Match group restricthome ChrootDirectory %h The permissions on the user directories looks like this: drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 1024 May 11 13:45 [user]/ And I can see that the user logs in successfully: May 11 13:49:23 box sshd[5695]: Accepted password for [user] from x.x.x.x port 2358 ssh2 (with no error messages after this) But after entering the password the PuTTY window closes down. This is a wild guess, but could it be because the user's shell is set to /bin/bash and it can't execute because of the chroot? If so, could you give me pointers on how to fix it? Would simply copying the bash binary into user's home directory and modyfying the shell work? How would I deal with the dependencies, ldd shows quite a few of those :) Comments/suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.

  Following I will ask a few specific questions but I will set the stage first. My goal is to monitor Applications in a very odd place - between the OS and a Hypervisor. If you have comments about this probably unachievable goal please do educate me. One good advice or link can save me days of work. Now to my current attempt. I installed on WinXP a VirtualBox (being open-source) and got a guest OS of latest Ubuntu running within. Where should I go next? • CentOS PAM+LDAP login and host attribute

  My system is CentOS 6.3, openldap is configured well, PAM authorization works fine. But after turning pam_check_host_attr to yes, all LDAP-auths fail with message "Access denied for this host". hostname on the server returns correct value, the same value is listed in user's profile. "pam_check_host_attr no" works fine and allows everyone with correct uid/password a piece of /var/log/secure: Sep 26 05:33:01 ldap sshd[1588]: pam_unix(sshd:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=ssh ruser= rhost=my-host user=my-username Sep 26 05:33:01 ldap sshd[1588]: Failed password for my-username from 77.AA.BB.CC port 58528 ssh2 Sep 26 05:33:01 ldap sshd[1589]: fatal: Access denied for user my-username by PAM account configuration Another two servers (CentOS 5.7 Debian) authorizes on this LDAP server correctly. Even with pam_check_host_attr yes! I didn't edit /etc/security/access.conf, it is empty, only default comments. I don't know what to do! How to fix this?

• Can't enable Windows XP file sharing

  The "sharing and security" option in the right-click context menu on a folder is no longer there. The File and Print sharing option is "installed" and turned on in the TCP/IP properties, but the ability to share any folders has disappeared, along with all previously shared folders. Where should I check to see what the issue is here? EDIT From comments below: "Server" service is not starting, see comment below for more... Firewall is completely disabled, too. This is XP Pro, Simple File Sharing is turned on. We've discovered that the "Server" Windows service is not starting on bootup for some reason. When attempting manual start, we get "error 2001: specified driver is invalid."

• Best Amazon S3 File Manager Utility?

  Ever since I started using Amazon's S3 service I've been struggling to find a good solution for simple file management, without having to write my own app to browse my buckets, upload and delete files, etc. The best I've found so far to do this is S3Fox. But it's far from perfect, it has problems deleting files and folders. Comments on the Firefox plugin page indicate I'm not the only person with this problem and the developer does not respond to emails. I've looked around briefly, but couldn't find anything that looked any better than S3Fox. Please tell me there's a better way! Edit (07/26/2009): The Firefox S3Fox extension seems to be getting love from its developer again, the problems I was having before have gone away, and I'm using it on a regular basis now with no problems!

  Hi. Looking to create a linux based development/test system. I'm the only one using it. Will be using a variant of rhel/centos/fedora, with a 640G drive, and an external 250G as a kind of backup. Looking for thoughts/comments on the layout/config of the drive for the install/creation process.   i have gotten the error in the microsoft KB article 975778 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/975778/en-us) i was able to get onto my computer luckily, but when i went on to get the hotfix that is stated in the article, it gave me this error when i ran it: "the update is not applicable to your computer." is there any way of getting the disk check error to stop, or to get this fix to work. i will answer any questions on hardware if you post the questions in the comments. answers to questions this is the a full version that i got from ASUS as an upgrade disk from windows vista (hopefully more specific than you were asking)

  I need to review firewall rules of a CheckPoint firewall for a customer (with 200+ rules). I have used FWDoc in the past to extract the rules and convert them to other formats but there was some errors with exclusions. I then analyze them manually to produce an improved version of the rules (usually in OOo Calc) with comments. I know there are several visualization techniques but they all go down to analyzing the traffic and I want static analysis. So I was wondering, what process do you follow to analyze firewall rules? What tools do you use (not only for Checkpoint)?

• Ruby on rails model and controllers inside of different namespaces

  OK. This is insane. I'm new to RoR and I really want to get into it as everything about it that I have seen so far makes it more appealing to the type of work that I do. However, I can't seem to accomplish a very simple thing with RoR. I want these controlers: /admin/blog/entries (index/show/edit/delete) /admin/blog/categories (index/show/edit/delete) /admin/blog/comments (index/show/edit/delete) ... and so on And these models: Blog::Entry (table: blog_entries) Blog::Category (table: blog_categories) Blog::Comments (table: blog_comments) ... and so on Now, I have already gone though quite a bit of misery to make this work. My first attempt was with generating scaffolding (I'm using 2.2.2). I generated my scaffolding, but had to move my model, then fix the references to the model in my controller (see http://stackoverflow.com/questions/903258/ruby-on-rails-model-inside-namespace-cant-be-found-in-controller). That is already a big of a pain, but hey, I got it to work. Now though form_for won't work and I cannot figure out how to use the url helpers (I have no idea what these are called... they are the automatically generated methods that return URLs to controllers associated with a model). I cannot figure out what their name is. My model is Blog::Entries. I have tried to mess with the route.rb's map's resource method, but no luck. When I attempt to use form_for with my model, I get this error undefined method `blog_entries_path' for #<ActionView::Base:0xb6848080> Now. This is really quite frustrating. I am not going to completely destroy my code's organization in order to use this framework, and if I cannot figure out how to accomplish this simple task (I have been researching this for at least 5 hours) then I simply cannot continue. Are there any ideas on how to accomplish this? • How to get old DLL's running on 64bit server

  Hello all, I'm moving my company's websites from a windows 2003x86 server to windows 2008x64 which is running IIS 7.5. The problem that I've got is that all the DLL's which were running fine on the old server, now error out whenever they're called. All I get is a generic error like: Server object error 'ASP 0177 : 800401f3' Server.CreateObject Failed /folder/scriptname.asp, line 24 800401f3 The line that errors is: '23 lines of comments set A0SQL_DATA = server.createobject("olddllname.Data") 'the rest of the script I already have that site running in an App Pool that is set to 32bit mode. But, I get the error anyway. Has anyone experienced this? I'm frusterated because all the info I look up says that all I need to do is set the app pool to run in 32bit mode. I did that and It's still not working. What else could I check?

• Increase backup speed, Backup Exec 2010 - QNAP TS419U+ NAS

  We have a QNAP NAS and the network shares are being backed up by Backup Exec 2010 over SMB. We can't install the remote agent on the NAS as it has an ARM processor and, as far as I am aware, there is no compatible agent. Do you have any suggestions on any faster method of backing up these shares as opposed to the current scenario? Currently the network bandwidth is not the issue, it seems that this access method is just not able to go any quicker. We've also added the NAS shares to the start of the selection list, but we're still running into 18 hours total backup time (total amount of data on the NAS is roughly 650GB). Any comments and/or suggestions welcome. EDIT: Data is being pulled from the NAS by Backup Exec to a LTO4 tape drive

• Is there such thing as hardware encrypted raid disk?

  I have a server for which I want to protect the content. The server is located on a clients premises. Is there a way to encrypt the content of a RAID DISK (at hardware level) ? What I need is that the server will not be able to start as long as the required password is not provided (the encryption key) I will give the best answer to Miles, though the answer was not exactly to my question. But from all the comments, it seems that it cannot be done hardware or .. it cannot be done as I would like to.

• Ubuntu Kernel Panic on Inserting Network Cable

  I've been having a recurring kernel panic with my Ubuntu 9.04 installation (see other posts by me). Today, I was fiddling around trying to get some cable attached when the system panicked. Looking at the layout, the only cable in the vicinity was the network cable. Upon further investigation, it seems that the system reliably panics whenever I insert a network cable. Removing the cable does not cause the panic. How do I stop the system panicking when I insert the network cable? If more information is needed, please add comments/answers and I'll post the required data.

• After logging out of SSH, screen sessions disappear on Arch Linux

  On Arch Linux (I'm on a single dedicated server, where my domain name points to only one IP), when I SSH into a user (say, for example, user mc), and then do screen -S test (or -dmS, the resulting issue is the same), run a command, and then detach from it, then exit out of my SSH session, and log back in, the screen session disappears. screen -ls returns No Sockets found in /run/screens/S-mc. The only way I can reattach to my sessions is if I never logged out of my SSH. How do I fix this? I do have read/write access in /run/screens/S-mc I detach from screen sessions with Ctrl-A,D disown -a && exit gives me the same problem shopt huponexit returns "huponexit off" There is no ~/.logout, and ~/.bash_logout is empty, with 3 lines of comments, telling me it's the ~/.bash_logout file ls -l /usr/bin | grep screen returns lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 12 Oct 31 2012 screen -> screen-4.0.3 -rwsr-xr-x 1 root root 363672 Oct 31 2012 screen-4.0.3

• How can I create a hotkey to play/pause Pandora on OS X?

  I'm on OS X and want to have a hotkey (e.g. Cmd-Opt-P) to play/pause Pandora. I've used Butler to set one up for iTunes, but can't find a comparable solution for Pandora. I'm open to any solution (including apps, AppleScripts, etc.) that would allow me to bind a hotkey to play/pause, and I'm willing to use a paid solution as well. What can I do? Solutions I've looked into and/or tried: Pandora Boy: but the keyboard shortcuts don't seem to work for me, despite following the instructions here. • Why does waking a PC up with a timer act differently than with the power button?

  I have a Windows 7 machine set up as a server. It has no monitor and is only accessed through remote desktop. I set up two scheduled tasks, one to put the computer to sleep at night and another to wake it up in the morning. When it's woken up from sleep via a timer, it stays awake for only a couple minutes before going back to sleep. When woken up by pushing the power button, however, it stays awake all the way until the sleep timer. Why does my PC behave differently in these two scenarios? I have set the PC not to prompt for a user's password on wake, since I worried that the login screen might follow different power rules. I tried SmartPower Configuration but had the same problems. I can provide more details if questions are asked in the comments, but I'm not sure what's relevant.

• Debian date jumping, causing complete lockup

  I have a Debian Squeeze VM that has suddenly chosen to jump it's date forwards just over a month, which seems to confuse it no end and cause it to require a hard reset (yikes!). There is nothing unusual in the logs, except that the datestamp suddenly jumps (today back to 2005). It's happened three times, so I don't think it's to do with the leap second issue as the last one of those was in July. When it happened once I spent ages checking stuff but could not find anything, decided to forget it. But three times is becoming an issue on a production server.
