• Can I replace my notebook's fan without replacing the heat sink?

  My laptop (Acer Travelmate 8204) has started making a grinding noise, which seems to be coming from the fan (not the hard drive). Some articles online mention replacing the fan, but others imply that one should replace both the fan and the heat sink. Does it make sense to replace the fan only? (addendum: does this procedure really take 3 hours for a noob, as this video implies? UPDATE: the fan certainly seems to be on the "top" layer when I open my laptop but some parts of it extend under other layers) Some additional info in response to comments: I have run MS scandisk on the hard drive a few times since the grinding started. It usually reports finding something or other but the computer's behavior doesn't change I'm pretty sure it's the fan based on where the noise is coming from. I employed the cardboard tube trick from the PC World article.

• How to create a dynamically built Context Menu clickEvent

  C#, winform I have a DataGridView and a context menu that opens when you right click a specific column. What shows up in the context menu is dependant on what's in the field clicked on - paths to multiple files (the paths are manipulated to create a full UNC path to the correct file). The only problem is that I can't get the click working. I did not drag and drop the context menu from the toolbar, I created it programmically. I figured that if I can get the path (let's call it ContextMenuChosen) to show up in MessageBox.Show(ContextMenuChosen); I could set the same to System.Diagnostics.Process.Start(ContextMenuChosen); The Mydgv_MouseUp event below actually works to the point where I can get it to fire off MessageBox.Show("foo!"); when something in the context menu is selected but that's where it ends. I left in a bunch of comments below showing what I've tried when it one of the paths are clicked. Some result in empty strings, others error (Object not set to an instance...). I searched code all day yesterday but couldn't find another way to hook up a dynamically built Context Menu clickEvent.   I can easily create url for searching the Internet for specific term: http://www.bing.com/search?q=example Is is possible to create a similar url for searching my Exchange server mailbox using Outlook Web App? Something like: http://my.exchange.server.tld/owa/search.aspx?q=example EDIT Some of comments asked for target, so here is the clarification: There is a web-based backoffice system which includes customer's email addresses. I want to provide an easy way to show emails related to this customer in a support mailbox. Adding a link to an OWA search result page seemed a way to accomplish quickly. I can lookup emails either via EWS or IMAP. I wanted to reuse OWA for displaying them instead of reinventing the wheel. If creating a search link is not possible what would be best alternative approach? I'm thinking about getting message list via EWS/IMAP, showing them and (at least now) redirecting to OWA in order to display the message content.

• What version-control system is most trivial to set up and use for toy projects?

  I teach the third required intro course in a CS department. One of my homework assignments asks students to speed up code they have written for a previous assignment. Factor-of-ten speedups are routine; factors of 100 or 1000 are not unheard of. (For a factor of 1000 speedup you have to have made rookie mistakes with malloc().) Programs are improved by a sequence is small changes. I ask students to record and describe each change and the resulting improvement. While you're improving a program it is also possible to break it. Wouldn't it be nice to back out? You can see where I'm going with this: my students would benefit enormously from version control. But there are some caveats: Our computing environment is locked down. Anything that depends on a central repository is suspect. Our students are incredibly overloaded. Not just classes but jobs, sports, music, you name it. For them to use a new tool it has to be incredibly easy and have obvious benefits. Our students do most work in pairs. Getting bits back and forth between accounts is problematic. Could this problem also be solved by distributed version control? Complexity is the enemy. I know setting up a CVS repository is too baffling---I myself still have trouble because I only do it once a year. I'm told SVN is even harder. Here are my comments on existing systems: I think central version control (CVS or SVN) is ruled out because our students don't have the administrative privileges needed to make a repository that they can share with one other student. (We are stuck with Unix file permissions.) Also, setup on CVS or SVN is too hard. darcs is way easy to set up, but it's not obvious how you share things. darcs send (to send patches by email) seems promising but it's not clear how to set it up. The introductory documentation for git is not for beginners. Like CVS setup, it's something I myself have trouble with. I'm soliciting suggestions for what source-control to use with beginning students. I suspect we can find resources to put a thin veneer over an existing system and to simplify existing documentation. We probably don't have resources to write new documentation. So, what's really easy to setup, commit, revert, and share changes with a partner but does not have to be easy to merge or to work at scale? A key constraint is that programming pairs have to be able to share work with each other and only each other, and pairs change every week. Our infrastructure is Linux, Solaris, and Windows with a netapp filer. I doubt my IT staff wants to create a Unix group for each pair of students. Is there an easier solution I've overlooked? • Force Windows to cache executables without running them?

  Is there a way to force Windows to pre-load certain EXE/DLL binaries into its prefetch/superfetch cache as if they had been executed? I have a particular application that loads pretty slowly on first run but if it's "warm" (recently executed) it starts pretty quickly. I'd like to prime the cache early in the background before the application is needed. But since it shows a UI, I'm looking for a way to do this silently. So simply launching the application it isn't ideal. Thanks you in advance. Prompted by David's suggestion in the comments, I wrote a PowerShell script to memory map the files, seek to the end, and close them. I haven't done any controlled tests yet and it could just be my imagination, but Sublime Text (the application in question) appeared to load much more quickly this time around and I haven't used it for several hours.

• Does a hard drive "working hard", i.e. when defragmenting or otherwise continuously active, significantly affect a laptop's temperature?

  Trying to diagnose and fix an overheating Acer 5735 laptop, running speedfan and doing general workload to try and cause the overheat conditions. I notice that windows xp is badly fragmented according to defraggler, at 58% fragmentation. So I defrag whilst watching the speedfan window, which was at the start reporting high warning style symbols for all of the sensors. After the defrag, I rebooted and ran a few programs, and even defraggler again and the sensors in speedfan all reported green i.e. not high. Wondering if there is a correlation between windows fragmentation causing the hard drive to work harder and produce more heat inside the laptop? dont want to just assume that the problems are resolved, so either speedfan is not accurate enough or fragmentation can lead to additional hard drive heat? All comments or suggestions welcome.

• Why is Windows Update telling me to install Internet Explorer 10 even though it is already installed?

  I have a Windows 7 laptop. For some reason, Windows Update keeps telling me to install Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7 even though it is already installed (downloaded from Microsoft website). Whenever I try and install it from Windows Update in order to get rid of it, I receive error 9C48. What is the problem and how do I solve it? (I've noticed several entries for similar problems online, but those are all for Internet Explorer 9). As I said in the comments, my system keeps trying to install the same update when it is shutting down, only failing with the same error. It is hogging my shut down button and wasting time during shutdown. Update: I just went and installed Internet Explorer 11 from the Windows website. However, Windows Update continues to offer me Internet Explorer 10. How can I tell it that the update is in fact installed so that it instead starts offering me updates?

• Disqus cache of unposted posts

  Some webpages implement Disqus and also have the rather bad policy of adding auto refresh to the page. This result in for example one writing a long answer in a debate and then a refresh comes along – and everything is gone. Is the comments, written, but not posted, cached somewhere? Is it possible to retrieve? I have experienced this on various pages. In the current case the debate page was reloaded and a rather lengthy post with a lot of references and long thought out sentences vanished. This page closes the debate during night time, and do a auto refresh of the page when one pass midnight – as such I'm not able to retrieve the debate for another 8 hours. Other pages implement for example an auto refresh after 20 minutes. Linux, Google Chrome.

• Upgrading Fedora on Amazon to 12 but getting libssl.so.* & libcrypto.so.* are missing

  I am upgrading to Fedora 12 on a Amazon EC2 using help here: http://www.ioncannon.net/system-administration/894/fedora-12-bootable-root-ebs-on-ec2/ I managed to do a 64 bit instance OK, however facing some problems with a standard one. On the final bit of the install from 11 to 12 I am getting an error: Error: Missing Dependency: libcrypto.so.8 is needed by package httpd-tools-2.2.1.5-1.fc11.1.i586 (installed) Error: Missing Dependency: libssl.so.8 is needed by package httpd-tools-2.2.1.5-1.fc11.1.i586 (installed) This is referenced in the comments from the link above but all it says is: Q: Apache failed, or libssl.so.* & libcrypto.so.* are missing A: These versions are mssing the symlinks they require. Easy fix, go symlink them to the newest versions in /lib However I am afraid I don't know how to do this. If it is any help I tried running the command locate libssl.so and got: /lib/libssl.so.0.9.8b /lib/libssl.so.6

• Are there any program for showing tooltip via OCR

  Edited for clarification based on comments: At work we have an old developed program where I need to navigate on a very long dropdown list only with numbered codes. To select the correct code, I manually look at an excel list that shows the code and the name each codes corresponds with. To make matters worse, it is not possible to type in the dropdown box (only first character is recognized when typing) So my question is: Are there any program which can show the text from a predefined list, when i mouseover the various possibilities in the dropdown list? The purpose would be to be able to identify the name which corresponds to each code, without having to look at the excel list. Thanks in advance!

• Copied XEN vm to new host - boots up asking to fix the HD (win2003 guest)

  I have an old box running CentOS 5.4, and XEN. It has a 2003 Guest that I wish to move over to another CentOS box running XEN. I stopped the machine, and have SCP'd the HD image files of the guest to the new host. I ran md5sum on the files, and they are identical. When I configure a new Guest, it fires up, but windows fails to boot asking to fix the system instead. The HD are identical, so I'm guessing there is something that I missed. I don't want to go through this procedure, because the system needs to be identical. How can I get one VM to run seamlessly on another host? Any ideas, and comments are 100% appreciated. Thank You

  Hi everyone Im looking for an app pr line of code that could let me observe a process, save the info in a number of variable and then put the gathered info on a file. Ive been trying with variations of top but no luck. I am running several CentOS virtual servers, VM is 2gb ram 2 processor. Maybe a script that works over a specified amount of time while writing lines with the info on a text file so at the end i can have a sort of table with the data. The thing is Im going to stress test the server and I would like to have the data to make some statistics. Any comments and suggestions are most welcome.

It a muti author site where people are engaged in writing posts, comments, updating status etc. According to Google Analytics this month traffic Visitor = 45,764 Pageview = 1,051,186 Visit = 141,447 I have cdn my site, compress the css, used w3 Total cache plugin to optimize my site. Since last month I am getting several down notice from Pingdom. Right now I am facing more down alert than before. And have to restart my site several time to up again. • Are Virtual-Desktop Managers good or bad for system resources?

  I am looking at Virtual-Desktop Managers for Windows 7. Right now it seems that VirtualWin is supposed to be about the best one available for use on Windows. I have never used anything like this though and I am just curious from others experience and knowledge, does something like this hog up a lot of system resources? I do not NEED it but it is a nice feature to have when I do want to use it, my PC's performance is more important then using it. So is virtual esktop managers a resource hog or probably not? • Firefox addon to display all shortucts

  Is there a firefox addon that would display all shortcuts on a web page and also browser shortcuts. for eg: c is the keyboard shortcut for gmail compose. So either on a particular key combination or by hovering over the compose button it should show a "c" to indicate there is a shortcut for this operation. I guess If we keep on seeing the shortcuts popping each time when we do an action then we can start using and remembering more and more of it. Thanks.   I am attempting to install a network management package called cacti onto Ubuntu running under Windows Virtual PC. I attempted to install MySQL as it is one of cacti's dependencies. I can install and start the MySQL server, but whenever I try to access it in any other way, such as to change the password, I get the error message Access denied for user 'root@localhost' (using password:NO). When I type google, it goes directly to Google's website. For info, I am not using a proxy server. I think there are some temporary DNS settings that must be flushed, but I don't know how, anyone knows how to fix this? Thank you.

• Dump vim screen into a file

  I need to dump whatever is seen on the vim screen as it is, with colors and everything. Is there a way do to id. I am hoping that ncurses uses the same escape sequence for colors as bash. So when I'll do cat on the file that I've dumped the screen to, I should get the same output as the vim file. I want to use it in the scenario when I am doing a side by side colorful diff of files and need to print them. If anyone knows of any other side-by-side colorful diff programs, please feel free to mention in the comments (not answers because I am hoping that this question will be answered so that it can be used by others).

• Enable group policy for everything but the SBS?

  I have created a new group policy to disable IPv6 on all machines. There is only the one default OU, no special configuration. However, this policy shall not apply to the SBS its self (nor the other DC at another location on a different subnet) because those machines do depend on IPv6. All the rest do not. I did see a recommendation to create a new OU and put that machine under it, but many other comments say that is extremely messy and not recommended - makes it high maintenance when it comes to changing other group policies. How can I apply this single group policy to every machine except for the domain controllers? PS - Yes, I understand IPv6 will soon be the new standard, but until then, we have no intention to implement it, and it in fact is causing us many issues when enabled.

• How to maximize parallel download from S3

  I got a lot of images to load from Amazon S3 on a single page, and sometimes it takes quite some time to load all the images. I heard that splitting the images to load from different sub-domains would help parallel downloads, however what is the actual implementation on that? While it is easy to split for sub-domains like static,image, etc; Should I make like 10 sub-domains (image1, image2...) to load say 100 images? Or is there some clever ways to do? (By the way I am considering using memcache to cache the S3images; I am not sure if it is possible. I would be grateful for any further comments. Thanks a lot!
