• Creating standalone, console (shell) for domain-specific operations

  Say that I have a system service, and I want to offer a low-level maintenance access to it. For that purpose, I'd like to create a standalone, console application that somehow connects to server process and lets user type in commands, allow it to use auto-completion and auto-suggestion on single/double TAB press (just like linux bash shell, mysql cli, cmd.exe, and countless others), allow command line editing capabilities (history, cursor keys to move around text..), etc. Now, it's not that much of a problem to create something like that by rolling my own from scratch, handling user input, scanning pressed keys, and doing correct actions. But, why reinvent the wheel? Is there some library/framework that helps with this kind of problems, just like readline library that offers improved command-line editing capabilities under linux? Of course, this new "shell" would respond only to valid, domain-specific commands, and would suggest valid arguments, options, switches... Any ideas? Thanks!

• Routing WCF Traffic Based on URI Domain Requested

  Is there a way to route traffic to a target WCF service file based on the URL domain requested? Basically, I have a single WCF RESTful services project with 3 service files offering different endpoints. It's hosted on a single IIS6 site looking for multiple host header values on port 80. I want to route traffic to different services files whether the requester is asking for www.site1.com, www.site2.com, or www.site3.com. Seems like the sort of thing I would use a global.asax or HTTP Handler for, but I am not sure since this is a regular WCF Service Application. Even though I am on IIS6 for this project, I don't mind using a URL re-writer and wildcard mapping, if I have to. I have admin rights on the balanced servers where this will reside, I just want to know if there is a common/best practice before I start hacking my way around this.

We're using auto-responders to deliver key information to people who complete a form asking for additional information. The goal is to reject forms that are submitted by competitors.   Hi, I would like advice on the best way to restrict access to a weba pplication (using .net 2.0 and II6) based on the clients IP address. The two ways I am considering: 1) Through the server side code - check the client I.P against a list of IP addresses within the web.config. 2) Through IIS by creating a virtual directory and restricting the I.P addresses on this virtual directory. My question is if I go the virtual directory route there are a lot of users that access this website and I have read reverse domain lookups made during each client request can be very expensive on server resources. How much of a risj is this? Any other suggestions /ideas to doing this would be much appreciated Thanks advance,

• Adding tables to sql server result in Domain\user.name.tablename

  Our app uses migratordotnet to modify the backing SQL Server 2005 database. This works great 99% of the time but we are running into an issue. We have a client that is using and Active Directory group for sql server login and when new tables are added it creates them as Domain\login.table_name. What permissions are needed to be given to the AD group to add the tables as dbo.table_name? This does not happen in with all of our clients with similar configurations so I must be missing something.

• Using DAO's or static methods in Domain Object with nHibernate

  I am using nHibernate for the first time, and after alot of reading/researching, plus looking at other projects done with nHibernate, have seen a couple of implementation practices. I am looking for opinions about which would be best to use and why. Essentially the two methods are as follows: Using Data Access Objects and a DAO Factory. Example usage: INotificationListDAO nListDAO = NHDaoFactory.GetNotificationListDAO(); NotificationList list = nListDAO.GetByListID(""); Use Static methods in the Domain Object. Example usage: NotificationList list = NotificationList.GetByListID(""); NHHelper.Session.Get(id); NHHelper.Session basically calls the NHibernateSessionManager.Instace.GetSessionFrom(""). While both look similar, it is more to do with best practice. From what I understand, the first option is more so if you are developing enterprise level applications, where my requirements are more for mid-range websites.

  Hi In this article Ayende describes how to map a single domain model to multiple physical data models. Is it possible to extend this principle such that the mapping can chosen dynamically? So for example, imagine we had an entity that could be written to the same physical schema in three ways depending on its current status, and lets assume that regardless of status each entity had a unique identifier. One solution would be to represent the entity in its different states with three separate classes: one for each mapping. Then the entity could be loaded and in order to change its state the entity could be mapped to a class representing one of its other states and then saved back to the schema, making use of a different mapping. I was wondering if it is at all possible to have the same entity represented by one class that held a status flag (kind of like a discriminator), and any save to the schema would choose the appropriate mapping based on the value of the status flag.   I've inherited a sharepoint wss 3.0 farm that is pulling users from 2 different domains, say domainA and domainB. So if I go into Add User and Browse, and type Smith, it is coming up with domainA\jsmith and domainB\jsmith. The company has moved away from domainA and uses only domainB now. So I want to remove domainA from the sharepoint configuration. I don't need to migrate existing sharepoint users, I just want for the domainA users to stop showing up when new users are added. I've been through every page I can find in Central Administration and I don't see where the names of the domain controller(s) are specified. It is using windows auth / NTLM.

  I would like to create a domain specific language as an augmented-C++ language. I will need mostly two types of contructs: Top-level constructs for specialized types or declarations In-code constructs, i.e. to add primitives to make functions calls or idiom easier The language will be used for scientific computing purposes, and will ultimately be translated into plain C++. C++ has been chosen as it seems to offer a good compromise between: ease of use, efficiency and availability of a wide range of libraries. A previous attempt using flex and bison failed due to the complexity of the C++ syntax. The existing parser can still fail on some constructs. So we want to start over, but on better bases. Do you know about similar projects? And if you attempted to do so, what tools would you use? What would be the main pitfalls? Would you have recommendations in term of syntax?

  I tried following this reference and this is now my domain's code: class SnbrActVector { long nid String term double weight static mapping = { version false nid index:'Nid_Idx' } static constraints = { term(blank:false) } } What I want is to do is to add an index key for 'nid' column. I dropped the existing table and run the app again so the table is then recreated. However, when i check for list of indices, I can't see a 'Nid_Idx', only available is 'PRIMARY'. Do I have to manually create the index and name it 'Nid_idx in my mysql database? Thanks.

  Hi, I want to post some data via javascript to another domain. Something like: http://www.othersite.com/submitfunnyname?name=blah The other site (othersite.com) has a REST interface that you can call (well actually this is a get example) to submit a funny name to them. Can I do this already with javascript? I'm a little confused on this - I know if that service wants to return some data, I'd need to use something like JSON-P - even though here I'm submitting some data, I guess the service will return some message structure letting me know the result, so it would have to be JSON-P, right?   I have a Dell laptop that's been experiencing some weirdness lately. Apparently Dell puts "Trusted Drive Manager" on their hardware.. Well, now I keep getting these errors: I tried uninstalling Dell Data Protection, but it says some other package is required for the installation, which I can't install because I'll get another generic error (Dell Data Protection Access Drivers). This error pops up when I first boot, when I open a save file dialog, when I try to do a disk cleanup. How the hell do I get rid of this!?

• Block SMTP session with sender domain which doesn't itself accept SMTP connection.

  I'm administrating a mail service for a small business. Their mail host's internet connection is an ADSL service with a permanent IP address. Unfortunately, many misconfigured mail systems will happily deliver to this host, but, when the host attempts to send mail back (e.g. a bounce notice, or a normal response from someone), the declared sender's domain has an MX which refuses to receive connections from this host. That misconfiguration makes their system a one-way mail sender, which is a problem. How can I configure Postfix on this customer's mail host to refuse SMTP sessions that declare a sender domain which itself refuses SMTP from this host? That is, if the SMTP client declares a domain that we can't make SMTP connections back to, then there's not much point accepting the incoming connection in the first place. Note that I'm not, as some commenters have assumed, talking about checking whether the SMTP client will receive messages. The check I want is whether the declared sender's domain (regardless of who the current SMTP client is) will accept SMTP connections from here. In other words: when we get around to sending a message back, we'll need the sender's domain to accept SMTP connections; I want to do that check before accepting the incoming session. I'm imagining a late check (after the low-cost checks to winnow most of the rubbish connections) that keeps the client on the other end while it attempts an SMTP client connection back to the declared domain of the sender. If that connection is rejected, the incoming one is also rejected. I'm also open to other suggestions for how this problem might be addressed (short of not using this mail host at all, which isn't an option).

• How to model a relationship that NHibernate (or Hibernate) doesn’t easily support

  I have a situation in which the ideal relationship, I believe, would involve Value Object Inheritance. This is unfortunately not supported in NHibernate so any solution I come up with will be less than perfect. Let’s say that: “Item” entities have a “Location” that can be in one of multiple different formats. These formats are completely different with no overlapping fields. We will deal with each Location in the format that is provided in the data with no attempt to convert from one format to another. Each Item has exactly one Location. “SpecialItem” is a subtype of Item, however, that is unique in that it has exactly two Locations. “Group” entities aggregate Items. “LocationGroup” is as subtype of Group. LocationGroup also has a single Location that can be in any of the formats as described above. Although I’m interested in Items by Group, I’m also interested in being able to find all items with the same Location, regardless of which group they are in. I apologize for the number of stipulations listed above, but I’m afraid that simplifying it any further wouldn’t really reflect the difficulties of the situation. Here is how the above could be diagrammed: Mapping Dilemma Diagram: (http://www.freeimagehosting.net/uploads/592ad48b1a.jpg) (I tried placing the diagram inline, but Stack Overflow won't allow that until I have accumulated more points. I understand the reasoning behind it, but it is a bit inconvenient for now.) Hmmm... Apparently I can't have multiple links either. :-( Analyzing the above, I make the following observations: I treat Locations polymorphically, referring to the supertype rather than the subtype. Logically, Locations should be “Value Objects” rather than entities since it is meaningless to differentiate between two Location objects that have all the same values. Thus equality between Locations should be based on field comparisons, not identifiers. Also, value objects should be immutable and shared references should not be allowed. Using NHibernate (or Hibernate) one would typically map value objects using the “component” keyword which would cause the fields of the class to be mapped directly into the database table that represents the containing class. Put another way, there would not be a separate “Locations” table in the database (and Locations would therefore have no identifiers). NHibernate (or Hibernate) do not currently support inheritance for value objects. My choices as I see them are: Ignore the fact that Locations should be value objects and map them as entities. This would take care of the inheritance mapping issues since NHibernate supports entity inheritance. The downside is that I then have to deal with aliasing issues. (Meaning that if multiple objects share a reference to the same Location, then changing values for one object’s Location would cause the location to change for other objects that share the reference the same Location record.) I want to avoid this if possible. Another downside is that entities are typically compared by their IDs. This would mean that two Location objects would be considered not equal even if the values of all their fields are the same. This would be invalid and unacceptable from the business perspective. Flatten Locations into a single class so that there are no longer inheritance relationships for Locations. This would allow Locations to be treated as value objects which could easily be handled by using “component” mapping in NHibernate. The downside in this case would be that the domain model becomes weaker, more fragile and less maintainable. Do some “creative” mapping in the hbm files in order to force Location fields to be mapped into the containing entities’ tables without using the “component” keyword. This approach is described by Colin Jack here. My situation is more complicated than the one he describes due to the fact that SpecialItem has a second Location and the fact that a different entity, LocatedGroup, also has Locations. I could probably get it to work, but the mappings would be non-intuitive and therefore hard to understand and maintain by other developers in the future. Also, I suspect that these tricky mappings would likely not be possible using Fluent NHibernate so I would use the advantages of using that tool, at least in that situation. Surely others out there have run into similar situations. I’m hoping someone who has “been there, done that” can share some wisdom. :-) So here’s the question… Which approach should be preferred in this situation? Why?

• ASP.NET / Active Directory - Supporting auto login for domain users

  I am developing a simple ASP.NET website that will run on the intranet on a WS2008(IIS7) box and respond to users running XP/IE8. Everything is domain connected and I am trying to automatically login the users much like SharePoint does. On my dev machine (XP), when running the site through VS, everything works. I can pickup on the user perfectly. I am using the following settings: <authentication mode="Windows"/> <identity impersonate="true"/> <anonymousIdentification enabled="false"/> <authorization> <allow users="*"/> <deny users="?"/> </authorization> However, when I publish to the WS2008 box, it doesn't work. Clearly I am missing a setting in IIS7 to support this. I have the following set for Authentication on the site: Anon Auth - Enabled ASP.NET Impersonation - Enabled Basic Auth - Disabled Forms Auth - Disabled Windows Auth - Disabled What am I missing? • VS2010 RC: Add new domain service class wizard entities list is empty

  Greetings! I am going through Brad Abrams' SL4 + RIA Services series. Right now I am here: http://blogs.msdn.com/brada/archive/2010/03/15/silverlight-4-ria-services-ready-for-business-exposing-data-from-entity-framework.aspx. When I get to the "add domain service" step and the wizard asks you what entities you want to expose, the list is empty. The dropdown that let's me choose my Entity data context is there and the "DishViewEntities" is selected but it is not showing the "Restaurant" and "Plate" entities in the list below like it does in the picture. I found this thread here: http://forums.silverlight.net/forums/t/168724.aspx. The poster has the same problem as me. I have restarted VS, rebooted, regenerated the EDMX, tried creating it in different folders. Still the list is empty. When it is empty, it will not allow me to select individual entities or generate the class. Any ideas from the community? Thanks!

  I am encountering unexpected behaviour using Linq-to-sql DataContext. When I run my application locally it works as expected however after deploying to a test server which runs IIS7, I get an error Login failed for user ‘DOMAIN\MACHINENAME$’ when attempting to open objects from the DataContext. This code explains the error, which breaks on the very last line with the error "System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Login failed for user". var connStr ="Data Source=server;Initial Catalog=Test;User Id=testuser;Password=password"; //Test 1 var conn1 = new System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection(connStr); var cmdString = "SELECT COUNT(*) FROM Table1"; var cmd = new System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand(cmdString, conn1); conn1.Open(); var count1 = cmd.ExecuteScalar(); conn1.Close(); //Test 2 var conn2 = new System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection(connStr); var context = new TestDataContext(conn2); var count2 = context.Table1s.Count(); The connection string is not even using integrated security, so why is Linq-to-sql trying to connect as a specific user? If I change the server name in the connection string I get a different error so its using atleast part of the connection string, but apparently ignoring the UserId and Password. Very confused.

StackPanel has DataContext but no ItemsSource. What am I missing?
