• Requiring 802.1x login before allowing access to network resources

  I have a ZyXel GS2200-24 managed switch, and a free-radius server running on Ubuntu 11.10. Radius is configured and when I log into the switch the authentication goes through Radius. Now, I'm trying to ensure that access to web resources (as an example, I set up a web server on the ip 192.168.1.2) requires first authenticating with radius, before the switch will allow the connection. Am I correct that this should be handled at the switch level? What are these rules usually called / how are they usually defined?

• Windows XP/7: custom routing for VPN connection

  We are dealing with a badly configured VPN connection from a vendor, which set up the default gateway but doesn't route traffic anywhere beyond their VPN zone. I managed to do some ad-hoc routing to configure a computer in a way that it can reach the vendor's VPN, our local network as well as the internet. I then tried to turn this into a script, but that failed since the interface number of the VPN changes on every connection. Is there a way in Windows XP and/or Windows 7 to configure custom routing on the client side of a VPN connection? What I would like to do is to have a script running just after the connection comes up that changes the routing table (similar to an ifup script on UNIX).

• Help changing MAC address in Windows 7 [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Change MAC Address I need to change the MAC address of my wireless adapter in Windows 7 (Ultimate RTM). I used to do this in XP both directly in the registry editor and with a .REG file I wrote. I have used each of these methods in Windows 7, as well as a few tools I found that are supposed to do this. Every time I change it, I disable and re-enable the network adapter in control panel, but upon running ipconfig /all it still shows my old MAC address. Any help? By the way, I do have Administrative Rights and UAC turned off.

• 'pip install carbon' looks like it works, but pip disagrees afterward

  I'm trying to use pip to install the package carbon, a package related to statistics collection. When I run pip install carbon, it looks like everything works. However, pip is unconvinced that the package is actually installed. (This ultimately causes trouble because I'm using Puppet, and have a rule to install carbon using pip, and when puppet asks pip "is this package installed?" it says "no" and it reinstalls it again.) How do I figure out what's preventing pip from recognizing the success of this installation? • Black screen appears when booting new install of Ubuntu 11.10 on my desktop, cannot access Grub menu to fix

  I installed 11.10 on my desktop PC but get a black screen after the BIOS screen when I try to boot it. I was able to run 10.04.04 on my hard drive before installing 11.10 and I am also able to use 11.10 on my usb pendrive and CD ROM. I've tried unplugging all USB devices before booting and also upgrading from 11.10 to 11.10. Holding the shift key from the BIOS screen doesn't allow me to access the GRUB menu to try: Highlight the first entry, press “e” to edit it. Navigate to words “quiet splash”, delete them and type “nomodeset” in their place (without quotes). Press Ctrl + X to continue boot. Once on the desktop, go to System Administration Additional Drivers and activate the recommended drivers. So running 11.10 on my pendrive, I tried editing /etc/default/grub, commenting out the GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT setting by putting a '#' in front of it to display the grub menu and setting GRUB_TIMEOUT setting to a value greater than or equal to 1 e.g. GRUB_TIMEOUT=10. However, when I run sudo update-grub, I get: /usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?) I get the same error with update-grub after: sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt and after: sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda reboot sudo update-grub Other suggestions to fix the update-grub problem: Open synaptic, then purge all the related grub installed packages and reinstall grub-pc then and finally: sudo update-grub Or use Grub Customizer http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1195275 What would be the best way to approach this? I'm concerned about purging "all the related grub installed packages" but if it's true some files are corrupted this would seem necessary. Also, was I executing the correct commands i.e. with mount and grub-install, before running grub-update?

  I've got a fresh Redhat Enterprise 6.2 64-bit instance on EC2. I've turned off the firewall and have installed an FMS 4.5 dev server. The FMS install failed, complaining about a missing libcap.so until I installed the libcap.i686 package. • Server appears to have lost ability to read PHP files with LAMP

  I have LAMP installed on a PC that is running Ubuntu 11.10. LAMP was running fine but I had to restart the PC because Unity was messing up (as it often does) and the tool bar had disappeared. When it started up, I was unable to fire up any php files. I have a file index.php in /var/www. It is owned by www-data as is the directory that it is in. The LAN address of the server is 192.168.1.10. However when I type 192.168.1.10 into the URL box on Mozilla FireFox, I get Unable to connect Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at 192.168.1.10 This server is connected to another server on the LAN that has the LAN address 192.168.1.4. When I type 192.168.1.4 into the Firefow URL box on 192.168.1.10, I see the display associated with index.php on 192.168.1.4. Why can it not display its own /var/www/index.php? Any assistance with this would be greatly appreciated, Peter.

After the machine is returned, it is company policy to completely format the machine and go back to a predetermined configuration. Right now, what we do is we use the recovery utility in the laptop (we are a small shop so we use the OEM Windows license that the laptops come with) and manually uninstall and change the configuration in order to bring it to our baseline config. I know that there are ways to create an image that gets copied to the hard drive with a specific configuration and with specific software installed (thats what OEMs do right?). I'm looking for a tool or a tutorial or something that explains as simply as possible how to create such an image. Thanks a lot

• Windows 2008 R2 File Sharing - 'Access denied' if groups are specified in ACL

  I am trying to move our old Windows 2003 File Server to Windows 2008 R2. What I have noticed, however, is that the entries for groups in the ACL are being ignored. For example, a user is part of a group in active directory. If I create a folder and enable full access for this group, then share this folder (and define sharing permissions for this group), users in that group do not get access to that folder. If I make an entry in the ACL for the user itself, it works perfectly. These even applies to my domain administrator account - If I create a folder and give full control to the local administrators group / domain administrators group, and I physically log on to the server, I still do not get access - I need to explicitly define my name to proceed. I am not sure what the problem is, tried looking it up in Google to no avail Any assistance will be greatly appreciated

  We're deploying thin clients connecting to a terminal server farm. The computers have high visibility to the public and I would like them to at least look presentable and not like something out of 1995. So I installed the Desktop Experience feature and enabled the Theme service. The server will not support Aero because it has no 3D graphics, but we can enable the Windows 7 Basic theme, which has the Aero look without the 3D effects. The problem with that theme is that you can select any window color you want, as long as it's baby boy blue. Is there a way to make those windows another color? The window color controls do nothing.

• Windows 7 Standy/Hibernate Freeze/Lockup

  I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate on a MSI U100 Netbook which often experiences a lockup or freeze whilst hibernating or shutting down. I have a friend with an Asus netbook running Windows 7 who has experienced the same issue. This happens to me perhaps 1-2 times a week, and is frustrating as hell because it will just sit there running flat out (the fan goes to max after a while) until the battery dies if I don't notice it first. Just wondering if anyone has had any similar issues or might be able to point me in the right direction. The freeze occurs when the screen has faded to black. The HDD light flickers for a few moments then just sticks on solid. I haven't been able to isolate any apps which may be causing this either. It will be fine one standby, and lock up the next with no new apps open. Any thoughts greatly appreciated. Cheers, Kyle

• Windows Vista wont recognize SSD drive

  I just bought an SSD drive for my Vista (32bit) box (120GB OCZ Agility 3). Unfortunately windows vista won't display it in the my computer window, and generally wont let me work on it. However, the bios recognizes the SSD drive correctly, and when I go on the windows device manager the drive is there as well. I can see the device properties. On the volumes, when I click on populate, I have: Disk: Disk1 Type: Uknown Status: not initialized Partition style: not avaiable Unallocated space: 0MB Reserved space: 0MB Any ideas what could be wrong? • PIN based Login in Windows 8.1 Missing

  I installed a fresh copy of Windows 8.1 Pro using Hyper-V, and updated with all updates via Windows Update. It's not domain joined. I cannot however activate a PIN based login for the installation and I'm not sure why. I'm using a Microsoft account to login (not just a local login). I have even manually enabled the feature using group policy (which apparently only should have mattered for a domain joined workstation anyway), rebooted, and it's still not available. As far as I can tell, everything else seems normal and is working as expected. For Sign-in options, I only see Password as a choice:

• How do i have 4GB of video memory with a 1GB video card?

  I ran the direct X diagnostic tool to take a look at my graphics capabilities and its telling me that the approximate video memory is clocked in at 4096MB. That doesn't make any sense, how is that possible? The only things that i can think of were that DirectX was inaccurate so i looked at the graphics statistics of my computer on CPU-Z which was included with the motherboard and that's telling me i have "negative" 1988MB. Not only is that not 4096MB, but its giving me a negative number and i know for a fact that you can't have a negative amount of memory???!!! The only things i can think of that would be amplifying my video memory output is the PCIe 3.0 bus, or that the motherboard is somehow including the on board video chip set with the video card which only then is only 2GB of video memory, which still has to be being amplified by something. Any suggestions?

• Files not running and folder named C:\windows\restop found with system files in it on windows 98

  I have an old Windows 98 machine that I started using for some stuff a few days ago. Today I noticed that I can't run many system files, so I checked my system folder and I noticed that most of the files are gone. After doing a search for them I found them in a folder in C:\windows called "restop". I don't really feel comfortable restarting because all the files are moved. Does anyone know what might've caused this or if it's safe to restart? Is there some special way to move the files back?

• How to keep Ubuntu 11.10 and Kate editor w/terminal from changing command line when changing tabs?

  I am programming C using Kate editor in Ubuntu 11.10. It works great, but when I change tabs in Kate, the terminal line changes to the file path of the tab I click on. Normally this is not a big deal (other than annoyingly adding extra text to my terminal) however if I am currently RUNNNING a C program, it obviously will type at the command line, which is not so cool. Example terminal window for my C program (its at a menu): 1) select opt 1 2) select opt 2 Enter choice: (here it waits for prompt from user) Now when I click a tab in Kate, it wants to put in the cd / path of the file in that tab, such as: cd /home/user/os/files And of course since my terminal was waiting for prompt from user it gets that command.. not good. Perhaps there is no fix, but maybe someone knows? Obviously I could choose NOT to switch tabs or end program before switching tabs... Note: I probably made the mistake of putting this under StackOverflow which is more of a programming area - so though repost here might be best (I am not sure how to link the questions but will paste hyperlink to that post - I dont want to violate any stackoverflow/superuser violations) Suggestions on merging them are welcome or if I should delete one? • Disable (or switch off) a network interface on windows but keep the "plug and play"

  I'm looking for a good workaround to do this on Windows 7 and Windows XP: Disable or make ineffective the network interface (ETH, WIFI, any NIC). If the user connect his ETH cable, the network interface enable again. Important Notes to take care: I'm working with wmic on Win7 (through the command line) I'm working with devcon on WinXP (through the command line) I'm specifically working with the .NET Framework 2.0 on C# but this is just for informational purposes. I know that an event won't help me to detect it (if there is a way or workaround to do this I don't know it). The real problem is that when I disable the NIC, I can't know if the user connects his cable or has a wired network. This is why I am looking for a workaround. I'll treat suggestions as answers if no direct answer exists. I'll provide any extra detail necessary.

  Is there a way to make Windows XP stay logged in even after the user logs off? Right now the PCs log in at start up and we're using WinOFF to shut down the computer after X minutes of inactivity. The problem is that WinOFF does not work when the user logs off and stays in the "Select user login" screen. I'm thinking a possible solution would be to make the computer log back in as the default user after Y minutes of inactivity. How can I make it so that Windows XP logs in automatically after the user logs off?

• Dial PPPoE connection on Windows startup

  Is there a way to automatically dial a PPPoE connection on startup? In Mac OS X, this is done automatically after login. It was also possible in Windows XP: when creating a new connection, it also created a shortcut to it on the desktop. Adding it to the startup folder and setting it to not prompt for credentials solved the problem. But in Vista and Windows 7, there are no shortcuts to the newly created connections, so I can't do the same thing here. Is there any other way to do this?

  I am trying to install Windows Server 2008 R2 on a new Lenovo X201 or T410 laptop. Setup halts with the following pop-up: A required CD/DVD device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now. Note: If the windows installation media is in the CD/DVD drive you can safely remove it for this step. The CD drive is obviously working, as it's booting from CD to get to this point. The only thing I can think is that it is to do with the fact they have SSD disks in - but that's just a guess.

What I have done so far: added the "solaris" publisher using pkg set-publisher -g http://pkg.oracle.com/solaris/release/ solaris removed the "opensolaris.org" and "openindiana.org" publishers (just to make sure) tried to start the update process using pkg update --accept or explicitly setting the release name pkg image-update --accept --be-name Solaris_11 - both backed out stating there are "No updates available for this image".

• Custom built accounts package running on windows vista , printer selection box not now appearing

  This package has a printer function for documents which always brought up the printer selection box from which one picked the appropiate printer. Now recently,almost certainly as a result of windows updates, when I select PRINT nothing happens. The printer is working fine, and indeed a 'direct print' option to the default printer which is a matrix printer works fine, as it does not invoke the printer selection process. Does anyone know if there is a particular setting which might be causing this to happen. It works fine still on all previous windows versions XP etc, but will not work on Vista or later versions. • Windows 7 Connection Sharing unable to access some sites

  I have a pretty sad networking situation that involves connecting to an open Wireless network and sharing that connection to an Ethernet that is plugged into a Linksys router. This has been done with XP and Windows 7, and it works great with XP. The problem with Windows 7 is that only some DNS will work. I don't know if it's been poisoned on the network above us (which we have no control over), but we've tried clearing the DNS cache as well as moving to using Google's DNS servers (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4). Here is a really quick list of sites that won't respond to DNS requests at all via dig, although if I get the IP address I can ping them: facebook.com yuilibrary.com twitter.com A lot of sites do work though. Anyone have an idea? It may be a subnet problem? If anyone wants more info let me know.
