• What are the benefits of a disk install vs. Wubi? And can I migrate my settings easily?

  I chose to do the Wubi install because it was short, simple, and easy to reverse (no messing with partitions required). To be honest, I can handle the lack of a hibernate function. I haven't really heard many other benefits of installing on a separate partition than hibernation and negligibly faster hard disk read/write. Yet almost everyone I encounter seems to have opted for the disk installation. Are there more benefits I should be aware of, especially as a college student who wants a fast, efficient machine for documents, web browsing, etc. (nothing big like gaming, I can run that on Windows)? Also, I have a fair amount of settings and packages installed that I spent a bit of time on and would rather not have to do again. Is there any way I can migrate all of these settings from the virtual disk on my C:/ drive (Wubi installation) to the disc installation in another partition? (I have a 16GB USB drive if that'll do the trick)

  I am well versed in the basics of Java programming, although through most of my career I have been maintaining, upgrading, and debugging someone else's Java code. I am mainly familiar with basic servlet applications. I have a strong beginner knowledge of Maven and Ant. I have more web development with Ruby on Rails, but would like to bring my Java skills up to par with regard to web development. It seems the world of Java is so big, I have no idea what the next logical step is for me. Spring? JAX-RB? EJBs? What is the next logical step for someone like me and how would you recommend I approach it?

  My friend is a project manager for a software company. The most frustrating thing for him is that his engineers frequently leave their jobs. The company works hard to recruit new engineers, transfer projects, and keep a stable quality product. When people leave, it drives my friend crazy. These engineers are quite young and ambitious, and they want higher salaries and better positions. The big boss only thinks about it in financial terms, and his theory is that “three newbies are always better than one veteran” (which, as an experienced engineer, I know is wrong). My friend hates that theory. Any advice for him?

  I'm writing an architecture/technical documentation for an inhouse project and I'm becoming more and more frustrated with Microsoft Word as I seem to use most of my time getting things to align correctly. Word has horrible usability issues but I didn't come here to rant, rather I'd like to know whether there exists something more suitable for the job. The point of this documentation is to provide a "big picture" of the system, and as such I'm not generating documentation from source code but rather writing it all by hand. Are there any alternatives to Microsoft Word for writing properly formatted technical documentation with less frustration?

• Where to contribute a Mozilla Persona example?

  I found out about Mozilla Persona today and fell in love with it completely. It really does feel like the future of account management. For the first time ever, I actually want to contribute to open source because I believe in this tech. I wrote a simple ASP.Net MVC3 demo web application showing how to login and logout users using Persona. I want devs in my language ecosystem to have a simple time learning about this by reading example code.   I have to build a new website for my client.. and he needs this stuff: A user generated content website.. where users can upload their own videos.. (i will use a video hosting platform with api like fliqz.com) I must manage a big user system.. where users can create their own "sub-users"... the site must manage paid subscriptions and payments through paypal.. and other payment gateways... So the question is.. i have to use a pre-built CMS and extend it.. or just a good framework? I've been thinking about joomla, drupal and expressionengine... It's not neccesary to use a open source cms... I've looking at drupal.. but is not as easy to understand and extend... Can anyone help me to make a good decision?

• How can i get almost pixel perfect collision detection in a multiplayer game?

  I'm currently working on a multiplayer game for iPhone. The problem i have, as with all multiplayer games, is that the other user will always see everything at a non-constant delay. The game I'm making need to have a almost pixel perfect collision detection, but 1 or 2 pixels off is not that big of a deal. How can I possibly get this working? I guess I could just set local player to also be at X ms delay. However this will probably just be worse and feel sloppy when the user input. I know this problem is probably something network programmers deal with everyday and I would be glad if someone could give me a possible solution for this.

  I'm using Cygwin to login to my lubuntu box: ssh -y *user*@192.168.12.37 I can easily use byobu to redeem my cli session. Is there a way to move a running window from display :0.0 to my remote session (:10.0)? I ask because my lubuntu box is hooked to the HDTV in the living room, and I give my kids priority to do their educational stuff on the big screen. I then (try to) pick up where I left off on a netbook Cygwin session. Usually I have to quit everything and restart on the netbook.

  I don't understand a lot about game engines and modules for Python, even though I'm aware of the existance of PyGame and Pyglets, so please don't bash me too hard if I'll wrote something wrong in this question :-) When I upgraded my Mac to the latest version of OS X, I noticed for the first time that Apple is providing a library named Sprite kit for developing games on both iOS and OS X. It looks to me fairly complete, and the fact is managed by a big company gives me the impression of being well-supported for the time being; in summary, it looks... cool. Actually in order to take advantage of "Sprite kit" you need to code in Obj-C. Since I don't know Obj-C but only a little bit of Python, do you think that there's a chance that sooner or later someone will make a wrapper for Python ? Thank you very much and best regards

• How to see the full file name on the Lubuntu Desktop?

  If I have a file with several characters in it, only a certain number of initial characters is displayed on the Lubuntu desktop and Xfce desktops. For example, I have a file titled, "interesting-links-on-default-browsers". It shows as "interesting-links-on-def..." with both DEs. However, single-clicking on the file in Xfce shows the full title but the truncated title remains in Lubuntu. It's not a big deal, but if it's just a matter of setting something somewhere to get the full title visible on single-click, I'd be grateful for pointers.

• Why circles are not created if small?

  I have changed the scale to my own and now I cant create any object, including circle, if it is of the size which is normal for my scale. I am to create big object first and then modify it to smaller size. Looks like minimal size protection is set somewhere. Where? UPDATE While creating a circle, if I drag for 0.04m circle disappears after drag end. If I drag for 0.08m circle also disappears. If I drag for more than 0.1m, circle persists after drag end. How to set so that it persist after 0.01m too?

  We are on the stage of planning a CakePHP project. It is a relatively a big project for us, as a developer+project manager, I want to hire someone to work with me. But what I really want is to spend less time on actual coding, without losing control of the code quality. What I want to do is that I will design all the functions of the project in CakePHP, at least all the model's functions, and leave the implementation part to the coder who I am going to hire.   I lucked out and managed to buy a two word .com EMD for the most important key-phrase for our b2b SaaS startup. Shutting down our branded domain isn't an option, we've already got too much invested in that brand (not in terms of SEO but in terms of other marketing efforts). The brand domain at present hasn't really been optimised for this key-phrase and we haven't invested any effort in SEO to date on that domain, but now we have some resources and want to make a big push for that key-phrase. • Increasing Ubuntu (12.04) partition size

  I'm running a dual boot Windows XP/Ubuntu system, and I'd like to increase the size of the Ubuntu partition at the expense of the Windows partition. I've already shrunk the Windows partition, creating a large unallocated space between the Windows and Ubuntu partitions (See linked GParted screenshot). http://s17.postimage.org/5ppnrrnot/GParted.png I'd like to move my Ubuntu partition to the start of the unallocated space, and then increase its size to encompass all of the unallocated space. Once I try and move it (Using the GParted live cd), it tells me to expect big GRUB issues since I'm moving my Ubuntu partition's start sector. What is it that I should expect, and how do I handle it?   Java.net, the home of  Java community projects, has been re-launched with a new look and new tools for developers.  The move from CollabNet to the Kenai infrastructure offers more flexibility for developers who want to host or contribute to community projects.  Instead of the large, fixed infrastructure per project (for example, several mailing lists per project), Kenai's ala carte features allow users to take only what they need. "We will continue to have the great mix of blogs, forums, and editorial content as well as new tools on the project side, including Mercurial, Git, and JIRA for developers," Java.net Community Manager Sonya Barry explains. The migration was huge effort. Over 1400 projects were migrated (and some 30 projects are left to go). A large part of the migration was a big cleanup of abandoned projects. With the high abandonment rate of open source projects, the was a lot to remove.
