  I have been learning C and C++ for sometime now. But, they do not allow me to do a lot of things like writing a script/program to get a bunch of files from the internet easily. So, I want to learn a scripting language which is fun and which is useful for everyday chores. Which one would you recommend, and why? • resize image without losing quality with Gimp

  Hi, i have a bunch of images which are way too big i need to decrease their size from 30 kb to 10 or 5 kb without loosing quality. I tried to change the dpi and pixels with no succeed. The images got blurred, and as they have text i can't read anything after the changes. Is there anyway i can accomplish this without loosing quality? I have almost a dozen images in my application.   Could you please explain why the shell redirection doesn't work with System.Diagnostics.Process class? I am trying to redirect the output streams to file with the following snippet: Process p = new Process(); p.StartInfo = new ProcessStartInfo(); p.StartInfo.FileName = "java.exe"; p.StartInfo.Arguments = @"> c:\Temp\test.log 2>&1"; p.StartInfo.UseShellExecute = true; p.Start(); The similar code works without problems with Python. Reading the output streams programmatically doesn't seem a preferable solution in my case because there will be a bunch of processes launched by my application.

• What is a better way to sort by a 5 star rating?

  I'm trying to sort a bunch of products by customer ratings using a 5 star system. The site I'm setting this up for does not have a lot of ratings and continue to add new products so it will usually have a few products with a low number of ratings. I tried using average star rating but that algorithm fails when there is a small number of ratings. Example a product that has 3x 5 star ratings would show up better than a product that has 100x 5 star ratings and 2x 2 star ratings. Shouldn't the second product show up higher because it is statistically more trustworthy because of the larger number of ratings?

  I am using the BoxLayout layout manager in java, and have aligned a bunch of components: myLabel.setAlignmentX(Component.LEFT_ALIGNMENT); myTextBox.setAlignmentX(Component.LEFT_ALIGNMENT); myButton.setAlignmentX(Component.LEFT_ALIGNMENT); ... I have a lot of components, and this seems over the top. Is there a shorthand way?   I've searched and tried a bunch of different things. I have a variable-height tophalf, and the bottom half should fill up the remaining space. • How can I get class, property, and method data from files without executing their code, similar to R

  I have a bunch of PHP files with classes, in them (although I can't be 100% sure that they won't have code outside of classes in them too), and I need to parse these files to get information about the classes, such as the names of the classes, the methods, the properties, whether they are private/public/static, etc. I looked at PHP's reflection classes and this is very close to what I want but the reflection doesn't seem to use external files and it appears to need to define the classes first. I need to make sure that none of the code is executed and I will be editing the files so I can't guarantee that they will even be error-free. Any suggestions? Thanks.

  Hello, I am trying to set up a navigation system that uses GET parameters with no value, example: http://foo.bar/?mainPage takes the visitor to the main page. So I am using if statements and I am wondering if there is a way I can do this without a bunch of if statements? I don't think switch statements would work for this. This is currently what I have: $mainPage = $_GET['mainPage']; $contact = $_GET['contact']; if(isset($mainPage)) { // go to main page } if(isset($contact)) { // go to contact page } I don't want to have to end up writing a ton of if statements, though. • How does one access subviews and handle groups of them?

  If I want to manipulate a view I get it with [self viewWithTag:5];. Is there a better way to do this? Sometimes I need to manipulate a bunch of view (e.g. move them all out of the way. I do this by adding a UIView (e.g. UIView iHoldViews) and then adding the views, buttons, etc to this view. Then I can move the iHoldViews view and all its subviews move with it. Is there a better way to do this? (I have a feeling there is :) Maybe storing them in a NSArray or NSMutableDictionary ?

  I'm trying to write a small CONSOLE (not metro style) app to quickly change the user account image of the current user to a select image for a setup scrip that I'm running on a bunch of laptops. They're all Windows 8 and (since it hasn't been out terribly long) I can't find a ton of info on it. I did manage to figure out that you need to use the Windows.System.UserProfile object to do so, but I can't find any documentation on how to do so in a console app. Thoughts? Suggestions?

• How do I find the viewable area of a WPF RichTextBox?

  I'm working on an app where I have a bunch of text in a RichTextBox. I'm jumping to various positions within the text, (hopping to an arbitrary paragraph for example) which seems to work by send the caret to that position but I can't seem to control where in the viewable area the caret ends up. Sometimes the caret ends up at the top of the RichTextBox and sometimes at the bottom. This would be fine if I was only interested in the line that the caret is on but I'm interested in the entire paragraph.Ideally I'd like to get the caret in the middle of the RichTextBox everytime. Unless the Paragraph is longer than the viewable area. My question. Is there a way to determine the viewable area of a RichTextBox and so do a calculation on how to position the caret properly? If I had that value I can then decided whether to put the caret in the middle (and know where the middle is) or at the top. Thanks for you help.

• Mesos slave not 'Running' multiple executors simultaneously

  I am using Mesos to distribute a bunch of tasks to different machines (mesos-slaves). Here is what happens: 1. My scheduler gets resource offers and accepts it. 2. Mesos stages multiple executors on the same mesos-slaves (each slave has 4 cpus) 3. Only ONE executor enters the 'Running' state on each of the slaves while the others are shown in 'Staging' state. 4. Only after the current executor finishes execution the other executor starts running. Given that I have 4 CPUs on each machine, shouldn't each slave be running 4 executors simultaneously? Each executor requires 1 CPU.

• Parse items from text file

  I have a text file that includes data inside {[]} tags. What would be the suggested way to parse that data so I can just use the data inside the tags? Example text file would look like this: 'this is a bunch of text that is not {[really]} useful in any {[way]}. I need to {[get]} some items {[from]} it.' I would like to end up with 'really', 'way', 'get', 'from' in a list. I guess I could use split to do it.. but seems like there might be a better way out there. I have seen a ton parsing libraries, is there one that would be perfect for what I want to do?

• Manually manipulating ArrayList

  I have an assignment where I have to create a deque, however I am not allowed to use any built-in classes or interfaces. I am implementing my deque using an array list. My problem is that when I have to, for instance, add to the beginning of the array list (beginning of the queue), i am not allowed to do this: public void addFirst(ArrayList<Integer> array) { array.add(0, int); } Is there a way to do this without using the add() function? Such as manually adding to the front and shifting the rest of the array to the right? Or maybe creating a new array list and copying...I'm not sure. Any help would be great; I have a bunch of functions to write, and getting the first one done will definitely put me in the right direction. Thanks

• How can I have it to where "git push" pushes to local repositories?

  I can do "git remote add origin x@x:~/blah" and "git push" will work. But if I create a local copy "git clone ~/blah" inside /var -- then "git remote add local /var/blah" inside ~/blah, when I try "git push" it doesn't push the updates. How can I make git push updates to local copies? I have a shared library I use in a bunch of projects. I use "git clone" inside other folders to get a local copy of the library. When I update the main library I have to go to each local copy and type "git pull" to get the updates? How can I say "git push" to push code to all libraries?

  I need to calculate a whole bunch of averages on an List of Surveys. The surveys have lots of properties that are int and double valued. I am creating a business object to handle all the calculations (there are like 100) and I'd rather not code 100 different methods for finding the average for a particular property. I'd like to be able to have the UI pass a string (representing the property) and have the the business object return an average for that property. So, like... int AverageHeightInInches = MyObject.GetIntAverage("HeightInInches"); . . . Then have linq code to calculate the result. Thanks!

  When creating a form, you can define a bunch of methods, clean_xyz, to make sure the data gets forced into the correct format. Is there any way to do this on a model level? Perhaps I can override the field setters somehow? I want it so that if I write something like my_address.postal_code = 'a1b2c3' It will automatically get formatted into A1B 2C3. Perhaps throw an exception if it can't be converted. That way I know I'll never have any malformed data in the database.

  Using jQuery's position() or offset(), I can't seeme to get the top/left coordinates of an image map area. It works in FF, but nothing else - no webkit, IE, Opera. $('area').bind("click",function(){ alert($(this).position().left); }); <area shape="rect" coords="14,25,205,150" href="#"> Anyone know of a different way to access these? Normally I would just take the coords and split(",") but there are a bunch of multi-faceted area's on these pages.

So, I have the List, and a bunch of numbers that are "associated" with an element in the list. I now want to sort the List elements with the first element having the lowest associated number, and the last having the highest. Once the items are order I can discard the associated number. How do I do this?   I'm building an application that contains a bunch of projects that are at various stages, and I need to list the completed projects, or the projects that are at various other stages. So to list the completed projects, I name a scope; named_scope :current, :conditions => { :current_stage => "Completed" } and use; @projects = Project.current in my controller. But I how do I find all the projects at other stages? I thought it would involve != but I can't get that to work. Any pointers very much appreciated. Thanks a lot

I'm writing an webinterface in codeigniter to send commands to a virtual server. these commands are passed through the browser in an url. example : http://server.com/TgtSendIRCommand?id=UM-02&code=KEY_UP this server then takes action and the web interface refreshes the screenshot. i just want to have a bunch of links in html that send this command to the browser. But if i click the links, the user has to stay on the same page. So the command is sended but there is no other interaction. i am using codeigniter. Any suggestions ?

• Enumerate all k-partitions of 1d array with N elements?

  This seems like a simple request, but google is not my friend because "partition" scores a bunch of hits in database and filesystem space. I need to enumerate all partitions of an array of N values (N is constant) into k sub-arrays. The sub-arrays are just that - a starting index and ending index. The overall order of the original array will be preserved. For example, with N=4 and k=2: [ | a b c d ] (0, 4) [ a | b c d ] (1, 3) [ a b | c d ] (2, 2) [ a b c | d ] (3, 1) [ a b c d | ] (4, 0) I'm pretty sure this isn't an original problem (and no, it's not homework), but I'd like to do it for every k <= N, and it'd be great if the later passes (as k grows) took advantage of earlier results.
