• How do IOS know which viewController is being viewed and hence need viewWillAppear to be called

  How does iOs know? Does each view has a pointer to it's controller? What happened? When we pop a viewController from navigation, does the navigationController arrange which view should be called? For example: If I added: [[BNUtilitiesQuick window] addSubview:[BNUtilitiesQuick searchController].view]; viewWillAppear will be called. However, window doesn't know the viewController. I am passing the view outlet of the controller not the controller. How can iOs 5 knows that it has to call [[BNUtilitiesQuick searchController] viewWillAppear:YES]

• Is there a way to set up a Linux pipe to non-buffering or line-buffering?

  My program is controlling an external application on Linux, passing in input commands via a pipe to the external applications stdin, and reading output result via a pipe from the external applications stdout. The problem is that writes to pipes are buffered by block, and not by line, and therefore delays occur before my app receives data output by the external application. The external application cannot be altered to add explicit fflush() calls. When I set the external application to /bin/cat -n (it echoes back the input, with line numbers added), it works correctly, it seems, cat flushes after each line. The only way to force the external application to flush, is sending exit command to it; as it receives the command, it flushes, and all the answers appears on the stdout, just before exiting. I'm pretty sure, that Unix pipes are appropiate solution for that kind of interprocess communication (pseudo server-client), but maybe I'm wrong. • Sharepoint 2010 search: How to modify search query before submit (programmatically?)

  Hi, I'm making a custom search box Web Part, similar to the OOTB Web Part from SharePoint (SearchBoxEx class). I'm interested in modifying the search query with additional text before it is submitted, based on a custom checkbox added on the Web Part. Any help on how I can achieve this? UPDATE: I've used the AppendToQuery and AppQueryTerms properties, but this will rewrite the text in the search box as well. I'm interested in passing the values "in the background", maybe as an extra parameter. Point is that the query modification should happen without the user seeing it explicitly.

• Android XML-RPC Serialization Issue

  I am attempting to use Android XML-RPC and for some calls I get the following exception: W/System.err( 837): java.io.IOException: Cannot serialize java.lang.Object@43759748 It looks like it is having troubles serializing the returned data, but I cannot find much documentation on how to actually use Android XML-RPC. The way I am using Android XML-RPC is as follows: Object response = (Object)client.call("sales_order.list", new Object()); This one is pretty odd. I have tried setting this call up in a few different ways (using HashMaps, not passing second variable, etc) and the response I get is that sales_order.list is not a valid Method. I have been able to login to the service using the following code: this.sessionId = (String)client.call("login", this.apiUserName, this.apiPassword); Does anyone have any ideas or a good resource on how to use Android XML-RPC?   I'm looking for a package to support reliably executing external processes from Java. My criteria: Abstract over OS. So if I want to run 'foo', it will look for 'foo.bat', 'foo.exe' under windows and 'foo' under other OSs (or, have a way of passing a map of os-command) Being able to execute Java classes by simply giving the class name and arguments (so the package locates the java command, copies jvm flags and then executes) Process stdout and stderr properly Watchdog / Monitoring capabilities I've looked at commons-exec but it looks like it answers only 3 & 4. Ant has support for execution but looks like an overkill to use it for this purpose only.

• C++: Keep track of times function is called.

  Keeping track of how many times a function is called is easy when passing the counter as an argument into the function. It's also easy when returning a one from the called function. But, I do not want to go that route. The reason behind this is because it seems like bad programming (letting the function know too much information). Is there a better way to keep track of how many times this function has been called? I'm just looking for concepts that I could study. Providing code examples is not neccessary, but might be helpful.

How could I order them? I probably have to write a many-to-many HQL query with the order-by clause? I though of passing the orderBy field name string to the query, or is there a better solution? Tables are: products, product_catalog, product_product_catalog (associative table) P.S. Using Play! Framework JPASupport for my entities.

• Inconsistent Routing Results in MVC

  Seems I'm still missing something to the MVC routing concept. I have a route that follows nearly the same pattern as another route in an area but for what ever reason I get a 404 every time I attempt to run it. I've tried to use Phil Haack's Route Tester DLL and according to that it hits the correct route (matched route comes out to common/itemhistory/{contentid}). When I try to run it for real, it blows up. I'm trying to map a call to a JsonResult by passing a Guid. I've had success with other routes working fine (common is an area in my site). • jquery updating a div in ajax diesnt work properly, when using a variable

  hi, i got the following code var zieldiv = $(this).attr(\'id\'); $.ajax({ url: \'index.php?params\', type: \'POST\', data: { color:thenewcolor, zieldiv:zieldiv }, timeout: 50000, beforeSend: function() { $("#" + zieldiv).css({background: "#" + thenewcolor} ); } }); I use this for dragging a small div into a bigger div. the variable at the beginnning would give out the string "test1". So in the ajax.thing the css of a div which matches the var zieldiv should be updatet. Problem is, if i would place a string instead a var into the $(...) like $("#test1") it acts like its supposed to, the #test1 gets updated. but if i use the var $("#" + zieldiv) the parent div, which is surrounding the #test1-div gets updated. but i know for sure the var zieldiv contains the string "test1", because when passing it to php it contains "test1". so i think this is a little strange. do you have any ideas? thanx, maschek

  My site does some short ajax call in JSON format, using jQuery. At client-side i'd like to send object just passing it in ajax function, without being forced to wrap it in an object literal like this: {'person' : person}. For the same reasons, at server-side i'd like to manage objects without the binding of $_GET['person'] or $_POST['person']. For example: var person = { 'name' : 'John', 'lastName' : 'Doe', 'age' : 32, 'married' : true } sendAjaxRequest(person); in php, using: $person = json_decode(file_get_contents("php://input")); i can get easily the object, but only with POST format, not in GET. Any suggestions?

• What's a good, threadsafe, way to pass error strings back from a C shared library

  Hello, all- I'm writing a C shared library for internal use (I'll be dlopen()'ing it to a c++ application, if that matters). The shared library loads (amongst other things) some java code through a JNI module, which means all manners of nightmare error modes can come out of the JVM that I need to handle intelligently in the application. Additionally, this library needs to be re-entrant. Is there in idiom for passing error strings back in this case, or am I stuck mapping errors to integers and using printfs to debug things? Thanks!

  Hi, We're developing a layered web application. The specs: 3 layers, data layer, business layer, ui layer. Programmed in C# Data Layer uses the entity framework Currently we plan on having the data layer return IEnumerable<T> to the business layer via linq 2 entities, and the business layer will return data to the ui layer. Since the ui layer has no knowledge of the existance of the data layer, how would it handle a result of IEnumerable passed to it from the BLL, where T is defined in the data layer? Are there any GOOD example out there on how to do this. Please note that I'm extremely new to factories / interfaces / abstraction to loosely couple layers. I saw the question here http://stackoverflow.com/questions/917457/passing-data-in-an-ntier-application and it was recommended to have the entity layer shared amongst all layers... however I do not want the other layers to be able to query the database.

  I've read a lot of comments mention in passing that the BlackBerry threading model deviates from the Java standard and can cause issues, but no amount of googling has enlightened me on what this means exactly. I've been developing a fairly large business application for the BlackBerry and, although I don't really have any previous experience with Java multi-threaded applications, haven't come across any issue that we've been able to blame on threading, other than what we caused ourselves. Can someone describe exactly how the BlackBerry threading model is different, and how I as a developer should take that into account? Obviously any links on the topic would also be great.

• Path with no slash after drive letter and colon - what does it point to?

  I have mistyped a path and instead of c:\foo.txt wrote c:foo.txt. I expected it to either fail or to resolve to c:\foo.txt, but instead it seems to be resolved to foo.txt in a current user's home folder. Powershell returns: PS C:\> [System.IO.Path]::GetFullPath("c:\foo.txt") c:\foo.txt PS C:\> [System.IO.Path]::GetFullPath("c:foo.txt") C:\Users\Administrator\foo.txt PS C:\> [System.IO.Path]::GetFullPath("g:foo.txt") G:\foo.txt Running explorer.exe from commandline and passing it any of the above results in C:\Users\Administrator\Documents to be opened. I haven't found any documentation of that and I'm utterly confused, please explain the behaviour.

• What can cause the language bar to disappear in a win32 application?

  When I run my Win32 application the Windows language bar (which is visible in all other applications) disappears after about 5 seconds. It reappears if I quit my application or alt-tab to a different application. If I alt-tab back into my application, it disappears again after five seconds. The switch key doesn't work either. It seems as if the system somehow has concluded that my application doesn't "support" the language bar. Is there something I need to do to for the language bar to be enabled? Or something I shouldn't be doing that can cause it to disappear? The application has a single custom window (where I draw DirectX graphics). I've looked through the arguments to CreateWindow and RegisterClass as well as the window messages that I handle (instead of passing to DefWindowProc) but nothing seems to be directly related to the language bar. I've only tested this on Windows 7.

  I'm using lucene on a site of mine and I want to show the total result count from a query, for example: Showing results x to y of z But I can't find any method which will return me the total number of potential results. I can only seem to find methods which you have to specify the number of results you want, and since I only want 10 per page it seems logical to pass in 10 as the number of results. Or am I doing this wrong, should I be passing in say 1000 and then just taking the 10 in the range that I require?

• Is there anything wrong with a class with all static methods?

  I'm doing code review and came across a class that uses all static methods. The entrance method takes several arguments and then starts calling the other static methods passing along all or some of the arguments the entrance method received. It isn't like a Math class with largely unrelated utility functions. In my own normal programming, I rarely write methods where Resharper pops and says "this could be a static method", when I do, they tend to be mindless utility methods. Is there anything wrong with this pattern? Is this just a matter of personal choice if the state of a class is held in fields and properties or passed around amongst static methods using arguments?

According to the Chrome Developer Tools profiler, 90% of the work is being done in (program), which I assume is the V8 interpreter at work calling functions and switching contexts and whatnot. Other than logic optimizations (e.g., only redrawing parts of the visualization that have changed), what can I do to optimize the CPU usage of my JavaScript? I'm willing to sacrifice some amount of readability and extensibility for performance. Is there a big list I'm missing because my Google skills suck? I have some ideas but I'm not sure if they're worth it: Limit function calls When possible, use arrays instead of objects and properties Use variables for math operation results as much as possible Cache common math operations such as Math.PI / 180 Use sin and cos approximation functions instead of Math.sin() and Math.cos() Reuse objects when passing around data instead of creating new ones Replace Math.abs() with ~~ Study jsperf.com until my eyes bleed Use a preprocessor on my JavaScript to do some of the above operations

• Powershell - remote folder availability while counting files

  I´m trying to make a Powershell script that reports if there´s a file older than x minutes on remote folder. I make this: $strfolder = 'folder1 ..................' $pocet = (Get-ChildItem \\server1\edi1\folder1\*.* ) | where-object {($_.LastWriteTime -lt (Get-Date).AddDays(-0).AddHours(-0).AddMinutes(-20))} | Measure-Object if($pocet.count -eq 0){Write-Host $strfolder "OK" -foreground Green} else {Write-Host $strfolder "ERROR" -foreground Red} But there´s one huge problem. The folder is often unavailable for me bacause of the high load and I found out when there is no connection it doesn´t report an error but continues with zero in $pocet.count. It means it reports everything is ok when the folder is unavailable. I was thinking about using if(Test-Path..) but what about it became unavailable just after passing Test-Path? Does anyone has a solution please? Thank you in advance
