• Provision storage in SAN encironment

  hi,.. Can somebody help in understanding how Lun Provisioning is done in clariion based on client requirement. Say, a client needs one 50 GB space on the host( for application) ,two -350 GBs ( for DB and stuff) on the same host and i have 4 raid groups with space of 200 GB in one 50 GB in second and 400 GB and 400GB in rest two all having 5 disks. And , I 'm using Raid 5 only. How do i provision keeping performance in mind( so that performance hit is not there)?..And i need to understand the concept of meta head as well. Please help me by elaborating the above scenario..I am learning to provision storage in non productive environment( b'fore going ahead and working on client prod server) and i have been learning a lot from SF ...I request the seniors here to help me understand it better. • Setting up SSL with 389 Directory Server for LDAP authentication

  I've got 389 Directory Server running on RHEL 5 with groups, users, posix etc. RHEL clients are authenticating users with LDAP - no problems, everything works perfect, but passwords are sent in plaintext and are visible with network sniffer. So, decided to run with SSL: Created CA - got both private and public CA certificates Using CA certs: generated both of private and public certificates and combined (1st file) for 389DS according to 389DS certificate request, imported with CA public cert to 389DS from graphical console (2nd file). Enabled SSL in 389DS On the client, using authconfig-gtk enabled SSL for LDAP, specified only CA public certificate Doesn't work. Howto? What is the best way to integrate safely?

• Exchange 2010 install locks out high level accounts

  Basically, when we installed Exchange 2010 alongside our Exchange 2003 server (we assume), this is what caused our problem. The Exchange 2010 server is not active, just running on the domain. What's actually going on is that user groups like Enterprise Admins are getting a single deny flag on Full Control over mailboxes currently residing on the Exchange 2003 server which is preventing any of us from making changes. It says these permissions are inherited from the Parent Object, but we have no idea which one that is. Any idea on how to go about fixing this?

  I have been googling about the differences between them. Bacula has lots of roles BackupPC is easier to configure Bacula works with agent, not rsync (great for Windows backups) It seems that Bacula is most often compared to Amanda though, while BackupPC seems a perfectly lovely and popular backup distribution to. I currently backup my servers with rsnapshot, but I am looking for a professional scalable solution that could also back-up 50 hosts without problems. Preferably a solution that can offer bare metal restores for my Linux servers. I am not looking to reinstall the exact same version of Plesk, the software, etc...

• Publishing and setting permissions to a Linux share to AD

  I have a Linux share that I want to publish to users on my Active Directory domain. I'd like to be able to control the permissions to access that share using security groups. So say I have a share named "Share" on my Linux machine named "Linux" with IP address 192.168.1.2. I publish \\192.168.1.2\Share in AD and make it so that only people who are part of the "IT" security group can access it. What's to stop anyone who's not in the "IT" security group from just going to explorer and typing in \\192.168.1.2\Share or \\Linux\Share into their Explorer to access this share? Do I need to set up permissions on the Linux file server?

• Configuring Ubuntu 10.04's Greeter Screen

  I have an Ubuntu server (9.04 at the moment) and an Ubuntu desktop which I recently upgraded to 10.04. Once I'd set up the users and groups on the desktop to match the server (I'm new to this, I think LDAP would do this for me, but that's another question), the friendly greeter screen no longer displays the same set of users1. In 9.04 (the previous version running on the desktop PC) there were four users shown. These had UIDs of 500 to 510. Changing the UIDs is one solution, but that would mean changing the UIDs on all my linux PCs, and that is a might PITA (unless there's a tool to make it less painful). How can I get the greeter in 10.04 to show users with UIDs in the 500s without resorting to changing the UIDs? I use the greeter screen with user pictures as the PC is mainly for use by my young children and clicking the picture is a bit easier (they still need to type a password though).

• Where does linux look for shared libs?

  I am trying to get the ar command on an embedded ARM computer running linux. I want to install debian and openjdk. It is a headless system. This is a custom linux distribution provided by the hardware manufacturer. The debian installer is missing the ar command so i tried copying the binaries from the debian package, but when running ar I get error while loading shared libraries: libbfd-2.18.0-multiarch.20080103.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory libbfd is also in the package. I tried linking it to /lib and /usr/lib but I get the same message when running. What is the best way to get debian and ar on a custom linux distro?

• Horde on Debian: packages or upstream?

  I'm currently using the Horde projects IMP, DIMP, MIMP, Ingo, Kronolith, Mnemo, Nag, Turba and Sork. I ignored the (rather outdated) Debian packages and installed the upstream versions. A few years later, my Horde installation is a bit outdated and I consider updating each project and each version individually a pain. The Debian stable packages are as outdated as ever, but squeeze will deliver reasonably current versions, so I'm considering switching to the Debian packages as soon as squeeze is released. What would you recommend for software packages like Horde? Using the upstream versions and manually updating or using the distribution's packages?

What I need to do: Manage 3 repos: unstable, testing, stable Self-service functions that let users add/remove/promote packages (promote means moving a package unstable?testing or testing-stable). ACLs that control which users/groups may add/remove/promote packages. Automatically re-sign packages as they move repo to repo (since the GPG key for "stable" should be different than "unstable") Automatically run "createrepo" to update repodata when needed. Suggestions?

• What causes memcache to delete keys?

  Our memcache install recently started removing keys, and we're not sure why. Large groups of keys vanish at the same time. Memcache reports that evictions are low to non-existent, and our app has no way to clear memcache (it can only delete specific keys). Even keys of which the app has no knowledge get deleted, so we're pretty convinced they're getting expired. However, our memcache configuration hasn't been touched in some time. Has anyone debugged an issue like this before, and if so, are there any steps you'd recommend we take? How flexible is memcache's expiration policy - is it possible that we're suddenly running into a criterion based on (say) write frequency to a key?

• Grant relay to servers based on AD security group membership

  We're moving our relay from an Exchange 2003 server to an Exchange 2010 server. I was hoping the "Grant or deny relay permissions to specific users or groups" option would still be available in some form, but I can't find out how to do it. I've read up on recieve connectors and so far I can't get it to work. I have edited the security on the Recieve Connector to allow the following extended rights to the group and added computer accounts to that group: Accept Routing Headers Bypass Anti-spam Submit to Server Accept any Sender Accept any Recipient Then I suddenly realised while testing... How would the receive connector resolve the permission to a particular AD object, maybe a reverse DNS lookup? What I'd like to know is if what I'm trying to achieve is possible, and how it would be possible. I would rather not revert to an IP-based list as this is not as manageable, and I'm trying to avoid creating static IPs/reservations for a number of workstations that would otherwise not need them.

• Is my large Windows folder slowing down my machine?

  I have a problem with my Windows installation running very slow and my Windows folder being too large. I thought that the problems are related. My Windows folder is 17.4 GB I have 1807 folders totalling 2.4 GB that are prefaced with a $. My System32 folder is 1.55 GB My Microsoft.NET folder is 654 MB – I don't know what if any programs I have that are using it. My Service Pack folder is 568 MB. The Software Distribution folder is 536 MB The ie8updates folder is 380 MB. How can I reduce the size of these folders and could their size be why I am running do slow?

• Best LXDE based distro/distro that supports LXDE?

  Lubuntu is nice - but it seems the LXDE version is not as up to date as Fedora LXDE Spin or even Debian squeeze with LXDE installed... I do like Chromium on Lubuntu though... its faster and a nice touch. So, any good recommendations? I am fairly used to Ubuntu and the dpkg/apt commands, but am willing to learn. I am looking for a lightweight 64-bit distribution for my main laptop (it is by no means "old" or "low spec" but I like that Lubuntu starts up in like 2 secs). Anyway as you can see I have a strong Lubuntu bias, but there are issues like: LXDE version seems not to be recent (esp in 10.04 version which seems to work more stably for me - with Nvidia drivers etc) 64 bit install is currently a pain - requires first install of minimal CD or alternate CD both of which required wired Ethernet, then install of lubuntu from PPA. Native 64-bit support would be nice. Linux Mint LXDE, for example, is also only 32-bit. Thank you so much

• Rsync plugin to many local wordpress installs via script or cli

  I am maintaining a large number of wordpress installs on a production server, and we are looking to deploy InfiniteWP for managing these installs. I am looking for a way to script the distribution of the plugin folder to all of these installs. On server wp-prod, all sites are stored in /srv//site/ The plugin needs to be copied from ~/iws-plugin to /srv//site/wp-content/plugins/ Here's some pseudo code to explain what I need to do: array dirs = <all folders in /srv> for each d in dirs if exits "/srv/d/site/wp-content/plugins" rsync -avzh --log-file=~/d.log ~/plugin_base_folder /srv/d/site/wp-content/plugins/ else touch d.log echo 'plugin folder for "d" not found' >> ~/d.log end end I just don't know how to make it happen from the cli or via bash. I can (and will) tinker with a bash or ruby script on my test server, but I'm thinking the command-line-fu here on SF is strong enough to handle this issue much more quickly than I can hack together a solution. • How do I login as a different user on Mac OS X Lion?

  I have a MacBook Pro running Mac OS X Lion which has a single local user (the local administrator account that I setup) and then the domain user setup on the laptop. I've gone into "Login Options" under System Preferences Users & Groups and set the option "Display login window as: Name and password". When the laptop first boots, it has automatically selected the local admin account, and I don't see where I have the option to change users. However, when if I log into that local administrator account and then log out (without rebooting) it will allow me to enter the user and password.

• Limit ftp users to only certain directories in Ubuntu

  There are several questions around limiting ftp users to certain directories. However, most of them refer to vsftpd, which I don't think I have installed on my system. I'm running Ubuntu 9.04. How can I tell what ftp service I have installed, and then limit certain users to only the /home/ftpuser directory instead of having full access to the file system? I think I can add them to a separate group and give that group access to the proper directories, but then do I have to remove that groups permissions from all other directories? It seems like there should be an easy way like setting the chroot_local_user value in the /etc/vsftpd/vsftpd.conf file, but that doesn't exist on my system.

  Hello I'm having a large problem with our development server, it have had a program called Webmin + a total idiot have been administrating the Linux sever. Witch now have resulted in the server being totally trashed, there are so many different kinds of the same program install that anything doesn’t work. And don't get me started on the users and groups :D Well at last I have been given the responsibility to administrate our development server. But I would like to start from scratch, instead of trying to find every single package and config the previous admin have **ed up. • MongoDB on FreeBSD

  We are currently using MongoDB 2.0.0 on MacOS but our servers are running FreeBSD. The most recent port of MongoDB is the 1.8.3 version. I have tried to compile the 2.0.0 by hand but I came across errors that I didn't manage to fix. I came across on the Internet a few old resources which are saying that MongoDB does not run well on FreeBSD mainly for performance issue (memory mapped files). Is that true ? Does it mean we have to switch our server to another OS ? Thanks for your opinions! • MLGPO for Windows Server 2003 R2?

  Is there something like MLGPO (Multiple Local Group Policy Objects) for Windows Server 2003 R2? I have a 2003 Terminal Server that isn't part of a domain/AD and I'm trying to set local group policies which applies only to certain users and/or groups and the policies differ between those entities. I wanted to avoid using the file permissions trick for on C:\WINDOWS\system32\GroupPolicy as that's an all-or-nothing approach. I can't upgrade this box to Windows Server 2008 as the software used is only supported and only works on 2003. Are there any third-party tools to achieve this?
