• Possible to access gdata api when using Java App Engine?

  I have a dilemma where I want to create an application that manipulates google contacts information. The problem comes down to the fact that Python only supports version 1.0 of the api whilst Java supports 3.0. I also want it to be web-based so I'm having a look at google app engine, but it seems that only the python version of app engine supports the import of gdata apis whilst java does not. So its either web based and version 1.0 of the api or non-web based and version 3.0 of the api. I actually need version 3.0 to get access to the extra fields provided by google contacts. So my question is, is there a way to get access to the gdata api under Google App Engine using Java? If not is there an ETA on when version 3.0 of the gdata api will be released for python? Cheers.

• What's a better way to display a handle for resizing a view on iPhone / iPad?

  I want to display a handle at the corners of a UIView that can be used to resize the view. How can I display the handles floating on the top of everything else and still have a connection to and be in sync with a view? The solution I implemented before looks like this: I put the view into another view that shows the handles on top of the corners. The problem with this approach is that the handles add extra space to the original view's size. Since Apple recommends at least 40 x 40 px for the size of a button, it is not very little space and also goes beyond the visible bounds of the original view. Another problem is that the original view has to be encapsulated in this 'helper view' object and thus becomes a part of something although it really is the main component.

• How to schedule a cron job to backup a MySql database every week?

  What is a command line I can use to back up a MySql database every single week into a file name with the date (so that it doesn't collide with previous backups)? Also, is this a reasonable backup strategy? My database is relatively small (a complete export is only 3.2 megs right now). The churn rate is relatively low. I need to be able to get the complete DB back if something goes wrong. And it would be extra cool if there's a way that I could see the changes that occur across a time span.

• UISwitch quick toggle multiple times.

  I was playing around my app and I was toggling a UISwitch really fast (who can resist?). So, I toggled it really fast for 10-15 times, an array that should contain the data from the table view cell that I have my switch in either has extra copies of the same cell sometimes, just one copy (the correct case) a few times and no data in it at all some times. The app works fine if it's toggled at normal speed. I'm pretty sure this scenario won't really happen with my users, but I'm still curious as to why it's happening. Thanks, Teja

  I have an application generating a really heavy big log file every days (~800MB a day), thus I need to compress them but since the compression takes time, I want that logrotate compress the file after reloading/sending HUP signal to the application. /var/log/myapp.log { rotate 7 size 500M compress weekly postrotate /bin/kill -HUP `cat /var/run/myapp.pid 2>/dev/null` 2>/dev/null || true endscript } Is it already the case that the compression takes place after the postrotate (which would be counter-intuitive)?   Hi, I'm looking for a simple bookmarklet to take the current URL of my website and refresh it with a couple of changes. For example: Take the current page: http://www.example.com/pages/ and change it to: https: //admin.example.com/pages/ * then load that new URL. *(I added an extra space after https:// because I'm a new user so can't have more than one link in my question) I tried searching for a bookmarklet that can do this but I couldn't find one.   Is there a way to reassign Makefile variable value inside of the target body? What I am trying to do is to add some extra flags for debug compilation: %.erl: %.beam $(ERLC) $(ERLFLAGS) -o ebin $< test: clean debug_compile_flag compile compile_test debug_compile: $(ERLCFLAGS) += -DTEST So if I invoke test target I would like to clean up my environment, add some new flags (like -DTEST to the existing ones), compile the whole code once again (first sources, then test modules). I do not want to copy/paste the code for compiling with some new flags set since there is a lot of logic put here and there. Is there some easy way to redefine the variable value so I can reuse the existing code?

  I'm using Drupal 6.16: When a user creates an account on my site I have them select a category (ie children, youth, adult, etc). This is done with the select list box using the content_profile module. I have a content type that posts an announcement. In this content type is a check box that says 'email group'. Right now it does nothing, but what I would like for it to do is e-mail all the users that are associated with the group they chose when signing up for their account. If this will require extra code please be specific as I am not a strong php programmer. Thanks for the help!! msindle

  I have a bare-bone express application, exactly the one that is created with the express command. I have installed socket.io and attached it to my server, like this: var app = express(), server = http.createServer(app), io = io.listen(server); server.listen(8000); Now, I also have the routes files, which is called like this: app.get('/', routes.index); Inside this module I have the following function: exports.index = function(req, res){ socket.emit('news', { message: "foo" }); }; This obviously leads to a 500 reference error, because the routes file is an exportable module, and obviously has no idea what the socket is, as it is located in the app.js file. Is there a way I can access this socket object from this, or any other file? Please note that it is attached to the express generated app. extra: what about getting/setting session data?   I'm running nginx 1.3.5 under windows seven, I need to execute nginx directly from a read-only media (CD or DVD), but when I want to run it, it fails with this error: nginx: [alert] could not open error log file: CreateFile() "logs/error.log" fail ed (5: Access is denied) 2012/08/28 13:52:46 [emerg] 5604#2864: CreateDirectory() "J:\nginx-1.3.5/temp/client_body_temp" failed (5: Access is denied) where J is my CD-ROM drive letter. I've changed nginx.conf to disable logging completely, but seems anyway it still tries to build a file named 'error.log' in '/logs' folder & some extra temporary contents in '/temp' folder at the startup, so I want to change 'logs' & 'temp' directory path to windows temp folder (%temp%), but I dont have any idea that how can I do it. Also I want to know why nginx still creates 'logs/error.log' after disableing error logging ?

  To use the web service that is part of an SSRS installation, it seems that you need to add a web reference to your project so that you can call it etc (see one of my previous questions). But if I needed to call the web service for different SSRS installations then i need to keep adding extra web references. My asp.net application currently displays reports from several different SSRS installations, not just a single server... Is there a way to either dynamically add the web reference or to dynamically change the server address of where the web service is located?

• Instantiate ItemsPanelTemplate

  I'm trying to create a ItemsControl that has a separator between items, for example a control to create a navigation bread crumb. I want the control to be completely generic. My original method was to create extend ItemsControl, add a SeparatorTemplate property, and then have the class add separators to the ItemsHost of the ItemsControl. The problem with this approach is that if you add extra items to the container panel, the ItemGenerator gets confused and the items are out of order and don't get removed correctly. So my second plan was to create a completely new control that would emulate an ItemsControl, but the problem I'm running into is that I can't find a way to instantiate an ItemsPanelTemplate. I would like to provide an ItemsPanel property just like ItemsControl, but I can't then create a panel from that template. Can anyone think of a way to either instantiate an ItemsPanelTemplate or way to add controls to an ItemsControl's panel without breaking the ItemGenerator?

  Hello everybody, Membership/Role/Profile providers API appeared in early days of asp.net Nearly everytime I can't live with standard API & have to add some extra functionality (for sorting, retrieving e.t.c.). I also have to use different database structure often (with foreign key to some tables for example) or think about performance improvements. These considerations forced teams I took part in to build own providers but I can't stand to implement providers API (because we don't use 70% of standard functionality at least). Moreover, providers that were built for exact projects were rarely reused. I wonder if someone found swiss-knife early-days-API providers implementation that is usefull for any kind of project without refactoring... Or do you use your own implementations of early-days-API's Or may be you abandon standard architecture and use lightweight implementations ? Thank you in advance

  I am learning C++ and was reading copy constructor from the C++: The Complete Reference. The books says that It is permissible for a copy constructor to have additional parameters as long as they have default arguments defined for them. However, in all cases the first parameter must be a reference to the object doing the initializing. But I am confused that how we are going to pass those additional parameters? I am sure there should be some way which is not given in the book and which I am unable to figure out. Can anyone help me out? EDIT: Also is it possible to pass these extra parameters in all three cases i.e. ¦ When one object explicitly initializes another, such as in a declaration ¦ When a copy of an object is made to be passed to a function ¦ When a temporary object is generated (most commonly, as a return value)

• Evenly distribute items on the screen

  I am trying to solve this little puzzle (the algorithm): I have N image icons and I want to distribute them evenly on users screen. Say, I put them in a table. If there is one image, there will be one cell in a table. If two - one row with two columns, if three - one row and three columns, if four - two rows, two columns... and so on until row space is gone and since then the table should only grow in columns without adding extra rows. I'm trying to figure an algorithm for this and perhaps this is something that has a solution already somewhere? My attempt is so far something like this: obtain_max_rows() obtain_visible_columns() if (number_of_pictures > max_rows*max_columns) { columns = roundup(number_of_pictures/max_rows) for(max_rows){generate row;for columns{generate column}} } else { **here comes to trouble...** } This logic is bit silly though - it somehow needs to think cases where there are 12 pictures on first screen and 2 on the other trying to balance it say 8/6 or somehow like that.

  I have a page where I can insert some javascript / jquery to manipulate the output. I don't have any other control over the page markup etc. I need to add an extra element via jquery after each present on the page. The issue is that the elements are generated via an asynchronous call on the existing page which occurs after $(document).ready is complete. Essentially, I need a way of calling my jquery after the page has loaded and the subsequent ajax calls have completed. Is there a way to detect the completion of any ajax call on the page and then call my own custom function to insert the additional elements after the newly created s ?

If he requests one, we hard 404 it. ASP.NET MVC is (in this app) an implementation detail, not a fundamental interface. My question: how do you examine an arbitrary incoming URL and determine whether or not that URL matches a defined ASP.NET MVC path? For extra credit: how do you do it from inside an ASP.NET-style IHttpModule, where you're getting invoked upstream from the ASP.NET MVC runtime? Thanks!

• Experience with SVN vs. Team Foundation Server?

  A few months back my team switched our source control over to Subversion from Visual SourceSafe, and we haven't been happier. Recently I've been looking at Team Foundation Server, and at least on the surface, it seems very impressive. There is some great integration with Visual Studio, and lots of great tools for DBA's, testers, project managers, etc. The most obvious difference between these two products is price. It's hard to beat Subversion (free). Team Foundation Server is quite expensive, so the extra features would really have to kick Subversion in the pants. My question is: does anyone have practical experience with both? How do they compare, and is Team Foundation Server actually worth all the money?

• How can I work with paragraphs in Wordpress?

  Wordpress has a filter that automatically add paragraphs to posts. I can remove this by adding the followin code: // Remove the <p> tags which WP automatically inserts in psots. remove_filter ('the_content', 'wpautop'); The problem is that i removes <br /> tags as well. So I'm not removing this filter at the moment. My problem is that inside a DIV box, I get extra space above and below the text (at the start / end of text). I could manipulate the <p> tag in css, but again, that will affect all <p> tags throughout the post content. Any suggestions to what I should do?
