• Testing harness for online teaching?

  I have been asked to teach an online programming course, and I am looking for a test harness especially geared to education. Some students will have significant coding experience, but others will be total newbies. The course is an introduction to software development, mostly taught in C with some C++ and Java thrown in. In any case, I would like to read their source code only after a test suite has made sure that it compiles and executes properly. The students will also benefit from having a tool they can check their code against before submitting it. However, the Learning Management System my employer is using doesn't have such a system. Do you know of any LMS software that includes this feature? Which testing harness would you recommend in case I have to roll my own?

• How does glClear() improve performance?

  Apple's Technical Q&A on addressing flickering (QA1650) includes the following paragraph. (Emphasis mine.) You must provide a color to every pixel on the screen. At the beginning of your drawing code, it is a good idea to use glClear() to initialize the color buffer. A full-screen clear of each of your color, depth, and stencil buffers (if you're using them) at the start of a frame can also generally improve your application's performance. On other platforms, I've always found it to be an optimization to not clear the color buffer if you're going to draw to every pixel. (Why waste time filling the color buffer if you're just going to overwrite that clear color?) How can a call to glClear() improve performance?

• When is a PHP project too small for a framework?

  I'm about to start on a small, static website project: no database or CMS required. Basically, a brochure website. I used the CodeIgniter framework recently to develop a full-blown web application, and I'm wondering if it appropriate to also use CI for smaller, simpler sites. Typically for a static brochure site I would write regular PHP pages with a few includes thrown in to save on repetition (i.e. HTML with a sprinking of PHP), but this time around I'm wondering if my new friend CodeIgniter might be able to streamline the development process. Is it sensible to consider a framework for such a simple project, or is it overkill? I'm worried that I might be the proverbial carpenter whose only tool is a hammer, and sees every problem as a nail!

  SQL Server 2000. Single table has a list of users that includes a unique user ID and a non-unique user name. I want to search the table and list out any users that share the same non-unique user name. For example, my table looks like this: ID User Name Name == ========= ==== 0 parker Peter Parker 1 parker Mary Jane Parker 2 heroman Joseph (Joey) Carter Jones 3 thehulk Bruce Banner What I want to do is do a SELECT and have the result set be: ID User Name Name == ========= ==== 0 parker Peter Parker 1 parker Mary Jane Parker from my table. I'm not a T-SQL guru. I can do the basic joins and such, but I'm thinking there must be an elegant way of doing this. Barring elegance, there must be ANY way of doing this. • Need advice to design 'crack-proof' software

  I am currently working on a project where i need to create some architecture, framework or any standards by which i can "at least" increase the cracking method for a software, i.e, to add to software security. There are already different ways to activate a software which includes online activation, keys etc. I am currently studying few research papers as well. • PHP page load seems to be requesting itself and misinterpreting the result

  I'm working on a messy PHP page by another developer and I was analyzing the resource view in the Webkit developer tools and noticed that the page (index.php) makes an HTTP requests for itself and then interprets the results as an image despite it being sent with the text/html header. Because of this it throws the warning: Resource interpreted as image but transferred with MIME type text/html. Looking at the time graph the call comes after the <head> because it has already requested images for the body. Sometimes there are even two 'bad' requests. Can anyone explain what might be happening and/or suggest how to fix this? Could these be related to PHP includes?

• Integrate Zend translator into my app

  Hello. I wish to use the Translator classes of Zend framework in my app, but I don't want to include the whole framework. I grabbed the: Locale folder Translate folder Exception.php Loader.php Locale.php Registry.php Translate.php and copied into a custom folder named zend.translator. Obviously I had to edit all them to adjust the includes to the new path... Is this the way to go? I'm worried to have to edit all those files every time a new version is released.

• How to I create an HQL query to return objects in a many to many relationship?

  Hi there. I have an application that includes 2 classes Club and Article. These are mapped in Hibernate as a many to many relationship. As a result, hibernate has created a table called CLUB_ARTICLE which it uses to manage the many to many relation ship. The CLUB and ARTILCE tables have no direct reference to each other and the mapping is only represented in the CLUB_ARTICLE table. I need to create an HQL query that returns a list of articles for a particlular club. So I need to supply the club id and get back a list of Article objects that belong to it. For some reason, I just can't work out how to do this. Any help would be very much appriciated! Thanks.

• Is there any JavaScript Library to intelligently truncate strings?

  I need to truncate strings in a side menu to make the fit into a div without a linebreak. The divs have a fixed width. I'm looking for a library to do that for me. If a string is too long to fit into the div, it should be truncated like: <div>This string is too long</div> == <div>This string is...ong</div> As you can see, the string is not only truncated by an ellipsis but the last three letters are also visible. This is meant to increase readability. The truncation should not care about spaces. Does anyone know of a library that includes such functionality? We're mainly using jQuery throughout the project. • In Eclipse, how to open a file browser in the directory of the currently edited file

  Hi, I know it's possible in eclipse to open file browsers from your project's resource browser, but is it possible for files that aren't part of your project ? Typically external includes are not found in your resource browser... If there is the equivalent of $(resource_loc) for the editor, it would work.. But I wasn't able to find it. Can anyone help me on this ? thanks! JC EDIT : I Found StartExplorer, but it's a joke of a plug-in. It is hardcoded to use WINDOWS explorer or cmd.exe. Also, it still requires you to use the resource browser. Other than that it can open paths selected in the editor, but they must be full paths.

• Compilation of latex file

  Hi, I am compiling a latex file on a server and download from there the generated dvi, ps and pdf files to view them. The latex file by \includegraphics includes some figure files which are not on my local machine. I found that dvi file generated by latex command does not show the figures after dowloaded to my local, but ps file generated by dvips -Ppdf have the figures, and pdf file generated by either ps2pdf or pdflatex seem not have the figures again. Is it because the figures are not actually embeded as part of the dvi and pdf files by those compilation commands? How to actually embed figures so we can only export the document files to other machines? are the case for tables in separated tex files included into main tex file by /input and the case for style files included by \usepackage similar to the above case for figure files included by \includegraphics ? • How do you find time for improving your programming skills?

  I'm a Java/J2ee programmer working in India. I'm very passionate about programming and I constantly strive to hone my programming skills by reading blogs, solving Project euler questions, learning new technologies, developing small apps etc;. But I find it very difficult to manage my time. Working for 12 hrs a day in office leaves me stressed out and spend my weekends with my family. So i hardly have like 5-6 hrs per week to actually work on something of my interest which will help me improve. How do you manage time so that you find time to improve your current standing? EDIT: 12 hours includes 1hour of travel & 1 hr of break(lunch/coffee). Effectively I work for 10 hours per day in office which is mandated by my organization. -Snehal

  I have this 3rd party library that has: slf4j-api-1.5.5.jar slf4j-jdk14-1.5.5.jar jcl-over-slf4j-1.5.5.jar I want to write some tests against this library and see its log output, and I don't want to add any more logging libraries (no log4j or anything else). I understand that SLF4J and Common Logging are both logging abstractions so I probably need to write my own simple concrete logger (or maybe not, since jcl-over-slf4j includes org.apache.commons.logging.impl.SimpleLog?). If so, what interfaces should I implement, and more importantly, how do I set up SL4J/Common Logging to use my logger in my test? I read in the SLF4J docs that I have to modify the StaticLoggerBinder class... does that really mean that I actually have to download SLF4J sources, modify the class and recompile it?

• How to include other controls in a scrollbar?

  I want to create a scrollview with a zooming control and a button next to the scrollbar. Sort of like the "tile window" button in XCode (top right corner of the editor), it should be in the same box that usually is used by the scrollbar only. Do you have an idea of how to approach this? I was thinking to use an NSScrollView and set the scrollbars to a custom subclass of NSScroller which includes the other widgets. What kinds of buttons use the same style as the scrollbar?

• How can I include platform-specific native libraries in the .JAR file using Eclipse?

  Hello all, I am just starting to learn JNI. I have been following a simple example, and I have created a Java app that calls a Hello World method in a native library. I'd like to target Win32 and Linux x86. My library resides in a DLL, and I can call it just fine using LoadLibrary when the DLL is added to the root of my Eclipse project. However, I can't figure out how to get Eclipse to export a runnable JAR that includes the DLL and the .SO file for Linux. So my question is basically; how would you go about creating a project in Eclipse and include several versions of the same native library? Thank you, Martin

  Hi, I'm looking for independent industry reports that compare and contrast the various source control tools out there. In particular, I care about Clearcase vs Sourcesafe vs SVN, but if the report includes other SCM systems that's fine. I need this for a client who wants to get a feel on exactly what they stand to gain switching to SVN (yes, from Clearcase and VSS). In other words, something I can use to sell it to their business. • Problem in Setting image in imageview inside ListView in Android?

  Hi, I have a listview which includes 2 textviews and 1 imageview. Now, the image in imageview will be set on certain conditions otherwise it should be left blank with no image. The problem is the images are not coming in proper rows. Say, for eg the image should be displayed at row 3 but its displayed at row 4. And, in some cases each row will have the same image. Has someone faced this kind of an issue? I am really clueless about the reason behind this. Can anyone point out the problem? Regards Sunil

  I am trying to create a simple animation which includes face of a famous character. For example Santa Clause. The face and the lips of the character will act according to the given input message. For example if a string is inputed then the lips of the character will be opened and closed till the end of the string while the given input message is vocalized using a text to speech converter. Moreover if the " :) " is used the character in the animation will smile. How could I do this? I was told that I can create this type of animations using "smill". • Generating a reasonable ctags database for Boost

  I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 and I ran the command: $ ctags -R --c++-kinds=+p --fields=+iaS --extra=+q -f ~/.vim/tags/stdlibcpp /usr/include/c++/4.2.4/ to generate a ctags database for the standard C++ library and STL ( libstdc++ ) on my system for use with the OmniCppComplete vim script. This gave me a very reasonable 4MB tags file which seems to work fairly well. However, when I ran the same command against the installed Boost headers: $ ctags -R --c++-kinds=+p --fields=+iaS --extra=+q -f ~/.vim/tags/boost /usr/include/boost/ I ended up with a 1.4 GB tags file! I haven't tried it yet, but that seems likes it's going to be too large to be useful. Is there a way to get a slimmer, more usable tags file for my installed Boost headers? Edit Just as a note, libstdc++ includes TR1, which has allot of Boost libs in it. So there must be something weird going on for libstdc++ to come out with a 4 MB tags file and Boost to end up with a 1.4 GB tags file.

• Eclipse: How to build an executable jar with external jar?

  Hi all, I am trying to build an executable jar program which depends on external jar downloaded. In my project, I included them in the build path and can be run and debug within eclipse. When I tried to export it to a jar, I can run the program but I can't when I try to press a button which includes function calls and classes from the external jar. I have edited the environment variables (Windows XP) CLASSPATH to include paths of all the external jar, but it doesn't work. A point to note is that I got compile warnings while exporting my executable jar, but it doesn't show up any description about the warnings. • Updates to NSDictionary attribute in CoreData not saving

  I have created an Entity in CoreData that includes a Transformable attribute type implemented as an NSDictionary. The NSDictionary attribute only contains values of a custom class. The properties of the custom class are all of type NSString. The custom class complies with NSCoding implementing: -(void)encodeWithCoder:(NSCoder*)coder; -(id)initWithCoder:(NSCoder *)coder When saving the Entity for the first time all attributes including the Transformable (NSDictionary) type are properly saved in the DB. When the same Entity is fetched from the DB and updated (including the Transformable attribute) it seems to be updated properly. However, when the app is closed and then reopened fetching the Entity does not show the updated Transformable attribute-type though the rest of the attributes of type NSDate and NSString are up-to-date. The Transformable attribute is the original saved value not the updated value. Is this a problem with KVO or am I missing something else when trying to save an NSDictionary filled with a custom class to CoreData?

  I have the code below: <?php $title = "Result Computation" ; ?> <title> <?php echo $title ; ?> </title> I'm using includes to call the header on all the pages, but what i want to do is that on every page i want to make it generate a specific title. On each page i've added $title = "Page Title" ; So that when the page loads it gets the title from the $title i've set on that page, but it the pages keep getting the default Title. • iPhone - Bug using CADisplayLink and UIControls - bad to mix openGL and UIControls?

  Having had problems using other methods, I've decided to stick with CADisplayLink to run my game loop. The animation is smooth now, but sometimes there's a problem where the buttons and other UI elements can't be used, can't be accessed by touch or changed programmatically. This includes UIButtons and UILabels. Has anyone encountered this before? Is it not a good idea in general to use interface builder and uicontrols on top of an OpenGL view? I've heard they don't play well together but haven't heard the reasons. Thanks!

• ASP.NET MVC as a service host for SOA like architecture

  I'm creating a distributed application that includes a lot of services and I'm looking for the technology that allows me to create and manage a lot of services easily. I know managing and deploying windows services is not fun. I'm thinking of using ASP.NET MVC as service host of my services where each controller action becomes essentially a service and I can communicate with a service via simple HTTP request and responses and not have to deal with complexity if i use something like WCF. Services need to be isolated and asp.net requests are isolated as far as i know, i.e. if a request throws an exception it will not effect other running requests. But I still have questions about the management of the services. How will it be possible to see which services are running, stopping and resuming services. Also ASP.NET MVC are passive, i.e. they only do something upon a request but what if i want to service that initiates work by itself?
