  • Aug 3rd 2014 HUGE DRop in visits [duplicate]

    This question already has an answer here: How to diagnose a search engine ranking drop? 5 answers i am not a pro at this but i have built my website using freeway pro and for the past year i have managed to get between 100-130 visits a day to my website but on Aug 3, it dropped to 40… then now 15 a day… I do not know what happened and clearly freaking out on the situation as this is my shop window. There are no warnings or errors in Google Webmaster tools. Please help me out how to understand this issue. Has anything been happening with google around this time??

  • Kindle Screen as Informational Display (weather, unread emails, calendar)

    I'm looking to create a type of homepage for my kindle like you might expect to see upon waking up (though realistically, I plan on using it as a secondary screen throughout the day) whereupon it shows you several things dividing the screen, but not being scrollable. I just want the summary to fill the screen of the web browser. It would show the weather my gmail inbox my calendar for the day maybe some tech news However, as a starting question, how would I go about embedding my gmail inbox into the page? I would love to put m.gmail.com into an iframe restricted to a certain portion of the screen, but I know that won't likely be happening. Any ideas on how to embed an email summary or the calendar?     I'm working full time 5 days a week, mostly between 10 and 14 hours a day. In the end of the day I'm very tired and just wanna take a shower, hang out and go to sleep. I have a lot of ideas that I want to implement and someday sell maybe through an online software business. I have my weekends free. However, when I get to the weekend I can't even imagine myself turn on the computer. But I really want to make my ideas happen, and I can't leave my job right now to devote myself only to my ideas. To the point ------------------------------------------ After upgrading from 13.10 to 14.4 my sound was lost. Even I've tryied several sugestions from you (and other helpers) I've got nothing. My dual (UBUNTU/WINDOWS) Desktop sound works fine in windows!!!(damm!!) my DELL Inspiration laptop sound works fine in UBUNTU 14.4 LTS. ¿?¿? Do anybody knows Which is actually the origin of the problem? Is there any solution diferent to assay-error metodology? Is'nt every newer version of UBUNTU enough double checked before releasing it?   • Slicing a time range into parts

    First question. Be gentle. I'm working on software that tracks technicians' time spent working on tasks. The software needs to be enhanced to recognize different billable rate multipliers based on the day of the week and the time of day. (For example, "Time and a half after 5 PM on weekdays.") The tech using the software is only required to log the date, his start time and his stop time (in hours and minutes). The software is expected to break the time entry into parts at the boundaries of when the rate multipliers change. A single time entry is not permitted to span multiple days. Here is a partial sample of the rate table. The first-level array keys are the days of the week, obviously. The second-level array keys represent the time of the day when the new multiplier kicks in, and runs until the next sequential entry in the array. The array values are the multiplier for that time range. [rateTable] => Array ( [Monday] => Array ( [00:00:00] => 1.5 [08:00:00] => 1 [17:00:00] => 1.5 [23:59:59] => 1 ) [Tuesday] => Array ( [00:00:00] => 1.5 [08:00:00] => 1 [17:00:00] => 1.5 [23:59:59] => 1 ) ... ) In plain English, this represents a time-and-a-half rate from midnight to 8 am, regular rate from 8 to 5 pm, and time-and-a-half again from 5 till 11:59 pm. The time that these breaks occur may be arbitrary to the second and there can be an arbitrary number of them for each day. (This format is entirely negotiable, but my goal is to make it as easily human-readable as possible.) As an example: a time entry logged on Monday from 15:00:00 (3 PM) to 21:00:00 (9 PM) would consist of 2 hours billed at 1x and 4 hours billed at 1.5x. It is also possible for a single time entry to span multiple breaks. Using the example rateTable above, a time entry from 6 AM to 9 PM would have 3 sub-ranges from 6-8 AM @ 1.5x, 8AM-5PM @ 1x, and 5-9 PM @ 1.5x. By contrast, it's also possible that a time entry may only be from 08:15:00 to 08:30:00 and be entirely encompassed in the range of a single multiplier. I could really use some help coding up some PHP (or at least devising an algorithm) that can take a day of the week, a start time and a stop time and parse into into the required subparts. It would be ideal to have the output be an array that consists of multiple entries for a (start,stop,multiplier) triplet. For the above example, the output would be: [output] => Array ( [0] => Array ( [start] => 15:00:00 [stop] => 17:00:00 [multiplier] => 1 ) [1] => Array ( [start] => 17:00:00 [stop] => 21:00:00 [multiplier] => 1.5 ) ) I just plain can't wrap my head around the logic of splitting a single (start,stop) into (potentially) multiple subparts.

    I'm trying to create a three select dropdowns that represent a persons birthday. I'm taking into consideration that there are 4 months with 30 days, 7 with 31 ,and 1 with 28 or 29 depending if it's a leap year or not. I would like the days dropdown to show the number of days depending on which month is chosen in the month dropdown. Here's what I have now.   • Server cost for smartphone app with web service

    Hello, I am working on a smartphone application that will require a backend web service - but I have absolutely clueless to how much it will cost. Web Service will handle: - login of users - cataloging of our user base - holding minimal profile information for users (the only binary data is a display picture which will be < 20k each) - performing some very minor calculation/algorithm before return results - All the above will be communicated to server from a smartphone (iPhone/BlackBerry/Android) Bandwidth Requirements: - We want to handle up to 10k users throughout the day. - I predict 10k * 50 HTTP requests a day = 500,000 requests a day * 30 = 15 million requests a month Space Requirements: - Data will be in SQL database. - I predict 1MB/user * 10k = 10GB + overhead. In other words - space is not a big issue. Software Requirements: (unless someone knows an alternative) - Windows Server 2008 + IIS - MSFT SQL Server Note: This is 100% new to me, so please hit me with all you got. Do I need Windows Server or are there alternative? Is it better to get multiple cheap servers to distribute load? Will Amazon S3 work for me? How about Windows Azure? Thank you!!

  • Server taking too long to respond error

    This is my first post on serverFault and my first entry in to web server configuration. The hardware and software. CPU: GenuineIntel, Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E7500 @ 2.93GHz OS: Linux 2.6.18-128.el5 Memory: 2Gb Background. I am running a small database (MySQL), around 1000 records with each record containing 44 fields. At the start of each day “00:01” the tables are cleared and populated with fresh data. The are 10 remote PCs all running Winodws XP and Firefox internet browser. All remote PC’s are connected to the internet using a min 4Gb broadband connection. Each remote PC runs a URL which displays a dynamic page of data which is refreshed every 20 seconds. This is a continual process 24 hours a day. I problem I am having is on odd occasions throughout the day the PC browser error with “Server taking too long to respond error”. What I am trying to find our is if I have the correct setting in the httpd.conf file on the server. Any help or advice anyone can provide would be very helpful.   • .htm pages working but .aspx pages throwing errors

    Our site has thousands of visitors per day but we've been receiving reports from some of our members that they are able to hit our main page, presumably because it's a .htm page, but when they click off to a .aspx page, they get an error. I've done as much research as I know how and here is what I have come up with: - We have not made any changes to IIS on our server in months. - We have a couple of customers that have been willing to work with us and provide information about their system. One customer is running Vista, the other is running XP. - We had one of the customers test both Firefox and MSIE. She gets same error in both. - One customer said, "We were able to post the profile and searched on available jobs and it worked w/ Firefox for a day, then it just quit working...we did not change any settings to Firefox after we posted the profile." - We asked the customer to clear their cache and try again. They responded with, "We just cleared the cache and got the same error; btw, I periodically clear the cache -- almost every day." Summary We have thousands of customers that hit our site with no problem. We can't reproduce these errors. These customers are getting the same error in different browsers. They are only getting the error on .aspx pages. They still get the error after clearing their cache. We would appreciate any thoughts on what other questions we could ask these customers or thoughts on how we can further troubleshoot this problem.

  • Relax Linux - it's just me! (filesystem permissions)

    One of my favorite things about Linux is also the most annoying - file system permissions. In production machines and web servers I love how everything is so secure and locked down - but on development machines it really slows me down. I'll give one example out of the many that I discover weekly. Like most people, I dual-boot Ubuntu and Windows so I can continue using the Adobe CS4 suite. I often design web themes and other things while I'm still using windows. Later I'll boot into Ubuntu to take the themes and write the backend PHP for them. After mounting the windows C: drive partition I can copy the template files over so I can begin editing them. However, thanks to Linux desire to protect me I find that after coping the files I end up with a totally locked set of files where even I don't have read-write permissions. So after carful consideration about the tremendous risks that the HTML files pose to me - I chmod them so that I and apache can begin using them. Now given, the chmod process isn't that hard - but after you chmod enough files per day you get sick of doing it. I'm constantly creating, fetch, editing, and removing files from my user, git repos, php, or other random processes. This is a personal development machine after all. Everything changes on a day by day basis. So my question is, how can I get linux to relax about what I'm doing with my HTML/JS/PHP/TXT/SQL/etc. files so that I can work faster without constantly stopping to chmod things? I pinky-promise I won't hack into my account with an HTML file. ;)

  • Best way to 'harden' embedded ext4 file server against unexpected loss of power?

    Hi all, First, a little background: my company makes an audio streaming device that is a headless, rack-mounted Linux box with a couple of SSDs attached. Each SSD is formatted with ext4. The users can connect to the system using Samba/CIFS to upload new audio files or access existing ones. There is also custom software for streaming out audio over the network. This is all fine. The only problem is that the users are audio people, not computer people, and see the system as a 'black box', not as a computer. Which means that at the end of the day, they aren't going to ssh in to the box and enter "/sbin/shutdown -h"; they are just going to cut power to the rack and leave, and expect things to still work properly the next day. Since ext4 has journalling, journal checksumming, etc, this mostly works. The only time it doesn't work is when someone uploads a new file via Samba and then cuts power to the system before the uploaded data has been fully flushed to the disk. In that case, they come in the next day and find that their new file has been truncated or is missing entirely, and are unhappy. My question is, what is the best way to avoid this problem? Is there a way to get smbd to call "sync" at the end of every upload? (Performance on uploads isn't so important, since they only happen occasionally). Or is there a way to tell ext4 to automatically flush within a few seconds of any change to a file? (Again, performance can be sacrificed for safety here) Should I set a particular write-ordering mode, activate barriers, etc?

  • Very strange networking problem in all computers in my house

    I have three computers in my house: One desktop (wired), and two laptops (wireless). I'm using Cox Communications (yes they suck), and yesterday they had a major outage. I know it was them because I called them up when I started losing connection to the internet. All the computers can connect just fine, but they don't have internet access. It just says "local only". The weird thing is, some of them work occasionally. For the first day my laptop was working perfectly, while all the other computers couldn't connect. Later on in the day it got reversed, and the desktop was the one with internet access. By the second day the problem on Cox's end was fixed, but we still had no access. I called them up and they reset my modem, and did the usual troubleshooting stuff. It never fixed the problem, but we found out that the problem had to do with conflicting IP addresses. My router was a Linksys WRT54G and it was about 5 years old. I figured it might have gotten damaged from the outage since it was so old, and now it's having trouble "fixing itself" and giving out the proper IP addresses. So I bought a new router, a Cisco Linksys E1000. I set everything up, and still the same problem. My computer has access right now (that's how I'm writing this), but no other computers seem to be able to get access. Is there possible damage to the modem? Can someone help me please? Sorry for this being so long.

    I want to improve the way I organize my projects/tasks/schedule What I do now is: keep an excel sheet with the name of the most important tasks/projects, I look at it at the beginning of each day and decide the ones I will focus on on iCal I write down events for each day, or for a concrete time (13 to 14 hours). I set up each day the tasks I want to accomlish, and allocate them hours I use Things (culture code) to keep info about tasks and projects not very important and which are not time allocated yet (GTD name = someday) I use Mail on Mac and create folders for the mails I want to process with the name of the different projects I save the main info for each project on freemind maps My system works well at the moment but it is pretty complicated to use. I want to make it better and I am looking for something with these requirements: must be 100% offline accessable it should use as less programs/resources as possible, ideally just one program should be able to manage all my info I can use the GTD methodology mixed with priorities and I can allocate each task converted to event on my calendar I can have different daily/weekly, etc views on a calendar to see the "big picture" must run on mac os x leopard price does not matter, I will pay for this So, according to your experience, can you recommend me something like this?   • Representing server state with a metric

    I'm using Microsoft's Performance Monitor to dump logs of RAM, CPU, network, and disk usage from multiple servers. I'd like to get a single metric that captures the state of a given variable to a good extent. For instance, disk usage is pretty stable, so if I take a single reading that says I have 50% remaining disk space, that reading will give me an accurate measure for the day. (The servers aren't doing heavy IO writing.) However, the tricky part here is monitoring CPU and network usage. The logs currently dump the % CPU usage every ten seconds. If I take a straight average of the numbers, it may not represent reality, as % CPU will be much lower during the night than day. (We host websites that sell appliance items.) I'd like to get an average over a span during peak hours (about 5 hours in the day) and present a daily peak hour metric. Of course, there are most likely some readings that will come in as overly spiked (if multiple users pinged the server at once) or no use (a momentary idle state). Is there a standard distribution/test industries use in these situation?

  • Mac SMB connections to Windows 2003 server, leaving Open Files

    We have several Mac clients (Both 10.5, and 10.6) mounting a share from a Windows 2003 server. At least once a day, our archivist will go into this share to archive items from it, to the backup server. Most of the time, she has no issues: she copies the folder to the archive server, when it's done, she deletes it from this share. Then, she will come upon one, and it will say she doesn't have permission. When I go into the Open sessions, it will say that a particular user has a READ lock on the file, in Windows 2003. Of course, this person does not have the file open, and the only way we can delete it, is to close the open session on the file. My thoughts: The Mac likes to "sprinkle" Hidden "Resource Forks" on SMB servers, and possibly, when this Mac who last wrote to that share, closes out of the file, and these files still exist. Windows 2003 has a bug, that doesn't properly "release" the OPLOCK on the file? Steve Ballmer just doesn't like Mac's, so he wants to annoy everyone by not releasing file locks :-) What can be done about this? It happens every day, and sometimes several times per day!   • Setting MSN or Yahoo! Messenger status to Invisible or Offline when idle for an hour

    Where, or how, do I set it up in MSN Messenger or Yahoo! Messenger to automatically switch my status to either "Invisible" or "Offline" when idle for a half hour, or an hour? I know how to set my status as "Away" or "Busy" after 10 minutes, but can't seem to find a way to set the offline status options without manual intervention. Back story As a software developer, I am very used to turning the computer on for the whole day and not turning it back off. (For example, checking email for urgent fixes, fix issue and push to web server). It's not even turned off when heading to sleep in case I might find it hard to fall asleep and come back to check on the computer. Or to have it there ready in the morning to check that everything is okay. If I'm seen as being online for 24 hours of a day, some people see me as weird. Their perception of my value decreases as I'm always there (hard to get = high value; always there = low value). Leaving it on makes everyone in my contacts list think I have nothing better to do all day than sit in front of the computer. Even though it's my job and I do admittedly spend more time online than other people. That's why I'd like to find a way to set my status as Invisible or Offline.

  • SQL Server Offsite Backups

    We have about !TB of SQL Server databases, and these databases generate about 200GB of data changes each day. Up to this point we have been doing Weekly full backups, daily diff backups, and hourly transaction log backups. The full and diff backups are backed up to tape and taken offsite each day. We have been trying to move away from tapes, and our IT department purchased a Barracuda Backup device that backups up data and then sends it offsite using our internet connection. I have been trying to get this to work for our SQL Server backups, and have ran into a number of problems. I normally like to just use SQL Server to perform backups instead of trying to use a agent, so that is what I tried first. However the Barracuda device was not able to dedup these files very well, so it ended up being to much data to try to send offsite and to archive. I then tried installing the Barracuda agent and using it to backup the SQL Server databases. However the problem I am having there is that on some of the database servers I also have files that need backed up, and I cannot find a way to create seperate backup schedules for the file backups and the SQL Server backups. Barracuda only does full or transaction log backups. So if I want to do hourly transaction log backups I end up doing a file system backup every hour (which is not good), or if I only schedule the backups to run once a night I either have to do a full backup every night, or only do a transaction backup once a day. None of these scenarios are good options. My question is, how is everyone else getting their large SQL Server database backups offsite. Are you just using tape, or have you found a offsite backup device that works well? Is anybody else using Barracuda to backup their SQL Server databases? If you do, then how do you have it setup?

  • Differential backup missing moved folders (flawed archive attribute logic)

    Recently I've discovered that my backup system it flawed: there are situation where various files/folders are missed. I do my backup from local disk to a network NAS. I use Cobian backup, and I have setup the backup software to create one full backup every week, and one differential backup every day. Now, the backup software (to my knowledge any backup software work this way) decide the files that go in the differential backup by looking at the file archive attribute. If the attribute is set, then the file go in to the backup. Now, when you move a file to a new location, on Windows systems, the archive attribute get set and the file is included in the backup, and that's fine... but when you move an entire folder, no archive attribute is set, nor on the folder, nor in any files inside the folder, so the moved folder isn't included in the differential backup! So, if you have a full backup plus a differential backup, and you moved folders around... then it's impossible to reconstruct the original files/folders structure starting from the full+differential backup, because the backup software didn't include the moved folders in the differential backup. So my differential backup are useless... Why does windows set the archive attribute when moving a file, but not when moving a folder? How can I deal with this issue? Is there a way to create a differential backup that works as it's supposed to do? Doing full backup every day is not practical, because the changed data is about 0.1% at day (by using a differential backup I can keep 4 weeks of files history without using too much disk space.)
