• New Servers Active Directory and Exchange

  I have 3 Dell PowerEdge server, each with 2 quad-core processors. I am going to bring this office out of the stone-age network (P2P, share files on a flash drive, emails through Google, etc) and set up Active Directory and Exchange 2013. Our needs are not that great at the moment - our staff consists of approximately 40 people, and our network may eventually be managed by an external company. We need only one domain for our emails (though we may serve emails for a few other partners domains as well). I was thinking of setting something up like this: Server 1: Primary DC. Active Directory and Exchange on separate virtual machines. Server 2: Redundant of server 1. Server 3: Shared resources, storage, backups, etc. How would you utilize 3 servers for an Active Directory / Exchange setup for a small/medium office? We do have plans to grow, so my solution must be scalable, though I'm not sure that I want to split permissions, though I'd consider it if that was something that could be changed on down the road.

• Is the capability to overwrite functions in JavaScript strength or weakness?

  I recently came across the following code (from liferay.js) when I was working with Liferay: .... if (!Liferay._ajaxOld) { Liferay._ajaxOld = jQuery.ajax; } if (Liferay._ajaxOld) { jQuery.ajax = function(options) { if (Liferay.Util) { options.url = Liferay.Util.getURLWithSessionId(options.url); } return Liferay._ajaxOld(options); }; } .... As you can see, the code above overwrites the function "jQuery.ajax" to modify "options.url". One may say this is a strength of the language since we can easily overwrite and customize existing functions. However, I would imagine this capability can easily lead to a problem. For instance, my code can overwrite the same function "jQuery.ajax" to modify "options.url" differently from the code above. As a result, any code that expect the behavior defined by "liferay.js" may no longer function as expected. I see this as a weakness of the language as it does not provide proper encapsulation. What are the consensus about this feature/capability of the language in the field?

• Is it a good practice to create a list of definitions for all symbols and words in a programming language?

  After arriving at this point in Learning Python The Hard Way I am wondering if this is a good practice to create a list of symbols and define what they do as noted in bold below, for every programming language. This seems reasonable, and might be very useful to have when jumping between programming languages? Is this something that programmers do or is it just a waste of effort? Exercise 22: What Do You Know So Far? There won't be any code in this exercise or the next one, so there's no WYSS or Extra Credit either. In fact, this exercise is like one giant Extra Credit. I'm going to have you do a form of review what you have learned so far. First, go back through every exercise you have done so far and write down every word and symbol (another name for 'character') that you have used. Make sure your list of symbols is complete. Next to each word or symbol, write its name and what it does. If you can't find a name for a symbol in this book, then look for it online. If you do not know what a word or symbol does, then go read about it again and try using it in some code. You may run into a few things you just can't find out or know, so just keep those on the list and be ready to look them up when you find them. Once you have your list, spend a few days rewriting the list and double checking that it's correct. This may get boring but push through and really nail it down. Once you have memorized the list and what they do, then you should step it up by writing out tables of symbols, their names, and what they do from memory. When you hit some you can't recall from memory, go back and memorize them again.

• Best approach for tracking dependent state

  Let's pretend I work on a project tracking application. The application is a database backed, server hosted, web application. In this application there are Projects which have many Activities which have many Tasks. A Task has two date fields an originalDueDate and a projectedDueDate. In addition, there are dynamic fields on the Activities and the Projects which indicate whether the Activity or Project is behind schedule based on the projected due dates of the child tasks and various other variables such as remaining buffer time, etc. There are a number of things that can cause the projectedDueDate to change. For example, an employee working on the project may (via a server request) enter in a shipping delay. Alternatively, a site may (via a server request) enter in an unexpected closure. When any of these things occur I need to not only update the projectedDueDate of the Task but also trigger the corresponding Project and Activity to update as well. What is the best way to do this? I've thought of the observer pattern but I don't keep a single copy of all these objects in memory. When a request comes in, I query the Task in from the database, at that point there is no associated Activity in memory that would be a listener. I could remove the ability to query for Tasks and force the application to query first by Project, then by Activity (in context of Project), then by task (in context of Activity) adding the observer relationships at each step but I'm not sure if that is the best way. I could setup a database event listening system so when a Task modified event is dispatched I have a handler which queries for the Activity at that point. I could simply setup a two-way relationship between Task and Activity so that the Task knows about the parent Activity and when the Task updates his state the Task grabs his parent and updates state. Right now I'm stuck considering all the options and am wondering if any single approach (doesn't have to be a listed approach) is jumping out at others as the best approach.

Furthermore there could be a conflict between software packages which are not allowed to be installed at the same time. The following packages have unmet dependencies: wine: Any ideas? It won't let me install the dependencies either it says it needs another set of dependencies to install them -_- im on asus kj50 64bit os dual boot with windows 7 sudo apt-get install wine1.5 Reading package lists... • Help: My SSL Certificate expired but I can't renew this weekend, is there a way I can disable SSL through IIS?

  Or perhaps force redirect to HTTP when they request HTTPS? I tried removing the SSL port settings under 'Advanced' but it broke the login page. I don't want to do a deploy/recompile right now but I am able to edit the VIEWS. However I am thinking there may be a way for IIS to do this, but then again I think the .NET code tries to force SSL. Crap. This is bull crap because I was bugging people about getting the new certificate since December and they were like oh we will take care of it... I think it may have even gotten to the point where they were getting annoyed with me hassling them about it! (rant over.) And yes, the key is that more support tickets will be caused by the browser giving a security error than if SSL was removed entirely for one day. Becaues they wouldn't very very likely not notice it being gone.

  I am building a brochure-ware website for a company that sells products all across the world. They need the site to ask the user what region they are in before using the site; there are 5 regions. This is because there are different products offered to different regions and each region may or may not want to customize their own content. However, at launch and likely forever, most of the pages will be the exact same minus what is listed in the footer and in the product selection menu. My question is how should I structure the sitemap for this site for best SEO? Should I be concerned with duplicate content penalties and/or cannibalizing the site's presence on the SERP? Some considerations: The client wants to be able to print links directly to regional specific content bypassing any prompt for the user to select a region (to ensure they land on the target page). The client cannot have a 'default' region so the user must have a region specified "Clean" urls are important, but there is wiggle room The client does not want each region to have its own domain There will be a link on the page to allow users to specify a different region The client is not concerned with localization ...at this time Some products are available in multiple regions A quick list of options I am considering: www.site.com/region/page region.site.com/page www.site.com/page?region (no cookie, pages require the parameter. • Hard drive self monitoring system

  I have a 500GB HDD on my desktop, and there are two partitions as C and D. The computer would not start and shows me a error message. Notice - Hard drive self monitoring system has reported that a parameter has exceeded its normal operating range. Dell recommends you that you back up your data regularly. A parameter out of range may or may not indicate a potential hard. So I took the hdd out of the desktop and made a USB external HDD. My laptop recognizes the hard drive as “I” drive and “J” drive. I am able to click “J” and see folders and files. But there is no response when I click “I” while it makes weird clicking sound. Can anyone explain why I drive doesn't work while J drive works on same physical hard drive? Is there anyway that I can fix?

• Using the Coherence ConcurrentMap Interface (Locking API)

  For many developers using Coherence, the first place they look for concurrency control is the com.tangosol.util.ConcurrentMap interface (part of the NamedCache interface). The ConcurrentMap interface includes methods for explicitly locking data. Despite the obvious appeal of a lock-based API, these methods should generally be avoided for a variety of reasons: They are very "chatty" in that they can't be bundled with other operations (such as get and put) and there are no collection-based versions of them. Locks do directly not impact mutating calls (including puts and entry processors), so all code must make explicit lock requests before modifying (or in some cases reading) cache entries. They require coordination of all code that may mutate the objects, including the need to lock at the same level of granularity (there is no built-in lock hierarchy and thus no concept of lock escalation). Even if all code is properly coordinated (or there's only one piece of code), failure during updates that may leave a collection of changes to a set of objects in a partially committed state. There is no concept of a read-only lock. In general, use of locking is highly discouraged for most applications. Instead, the use of entry processors provides a far more efficient approach, at the cost of some additional complexity.

• Upgrade PHP 5.1.6 to 5.2.x on Fedora 6 - Solutions?

  I have a CRM on an old Fedora server, running Apache 2.2.6, MySQL 5.0.27, and PHP 5.1.6. I see a couple of options to fix my problem, but I thought I would consult the pros on this one here at Server Fault to see if I'm missing anything. This is after spending a good while searching the net for solutions. Option 1 Upgrade Fedora, step-wise, to Fedora 7 and then to 8, and then the PHP packages I need would be available. I know this is hazardous, because of repository location, dependencies, etc. Option 2 Upgrade using this method. This may or may not work, and so would be considered a crap shoot. I consulted some IT people and they say the best best is to back up data and build a new server with updated hard and software. I happen to agree, but wanted to exhaust all my resources first.

• How should I implement Transaction database EJB 3.0

  In the CustomerTransactions entity, I have the following field to record what the customer bought: @ManyToMany private List<Item> listOfItemsBought; When I think more about this field, there's a chance it may not work because merchants are allowed to change item's information (e.g. price, discount, etc...). Hence, this field will not be able to record what the customer actually bought when the transaction occurred. At the moment, I can only think of 2 ways to make it work. I will record the transaction details into a String field. I feel that this way would be messy if I need to extract some information about the transaction later on. Whenever the merchant changes an item's information, I will not update directly to that item's fields. Instead, I will create another new item with all the new information and keep the old item untouched. I feel that this way is better because I can easily extract information about the transaction later on. However, the bad side is that my Item table may contain a lot of rows. I'd be very grateful if someone could give me an advice on how I should tackle this problem. • Should I be worrying about limiting the number of textures in my game?

  I am working on a GUI in XNA 4.0 at the moment. (Before you point out that there are many GUIs already in existance, this is as much a learning exercise as a practical project). As you may know, controls and dialogs in Windows actually consist of a number of system-level windows. For instance, a dialog box may consist of a window for the whole dialog, a child window for the client area, another window (barely showing) for the frame, and so on. This makes detecting mouse hits and doing clipping relatively easy. I'd like to design my XNA GUI along the same lines, but using overlapping Textures instead of windows obviously. My question (yes, there's actually a question in this drivel) is: am I at risk of adversely affecting game performance and/or running low in resources if I get too nuts with the creating of many small textures? I haven't been able to find much information on how resource-tight the XNA environment actually is. I grew up in the days of 64K ram so I'm used to obsessing about resources and optimization. Anyway, any feedback appreciated.

• Live HTML Preview

  When you need to edit an HTML document in NetBeans you may find useful this little plugin that adds a Preview tab to HTML editor window. The plugin works with some small issues in NetBeans 7.4 but I recommend using development builds instead. So install the plugin, restart NetBeans and open any HTML document. Notice there's a Preview button in editor's toolbar (see the red rectangle in the picture below). Now split the editor window by dragging the split button at top right corner. You can also use menu View - Split - Vertically.  Then in the bottom split part toggle Preview button. You will get a live preview of your HTML source code. The preview pane will auto-refresh as you edit the HTML code. There are even some handy tools in Preview toolbar, for example you can resize the preview browser to match the screen dimensions of various device types. I know there is full-blown HTML5 support in NetBeans 7.4. But if you need to edit a single document or when you're running Java-only NetBeans distribution this plugin may come handy... Note: The plugin is built on top of embedded WebKit browser which is based on JavaFX WebView component. So there might be some issue when using the plugin on some flavors of Linux.

• I bought a new battery and Ubuntu 12.10 isn't recognizing it

  I inherited my mom's old laptop and installed Ubuntu over top of Vista, so now it is purely Ubuntu. Her old battery only lasted about 10 minutes, so it had to be plugged in all the time, which I didn't like. So I bought a battery, and inserted it in when it came. The laptop doesn't see it at at all- no battery icon whatsoever. I can pull it out and put the old battery in and it recognizes it. The new battery comes with a program (a .exe) to update the bios to accommodate the new battery... But don't have Windows anymore and Wine gives me an error when I try to run it, so I am at a loss of ideas. I thought of running a virtual machine of Windows to install it, or run a Windows To Go drive(a new feature of Windows 8), but I don't think those are good ideas as they may not work or permanently ruin something. I am not an extremely experienced user of Ubuntu/Linux, so I don't where to go from here. I'm running Ubuntu 12.10 on a Sony Vaio VGN-NR, if that helps. Also note that I just installed Ubuntu the other day and have nothing important on the pc yet, so I am not afraid to reinstall Ubuntu if it may help. Thanks!

• TrueCrypt Corrupted Files

  Several months ago, I needed to reorganize my data across multiple external hard drives with my laptops primary hard drive as the go-between. My external hard drives are all encrypted with TrueCrypt. It appears to me that somehow during the transfer of my files between the encrypted external drive an the unencrypted internal drive, the files were transferred "as-is" (in their encrypted state). The files range from very small to very large. It appears that this may have happened during one consecutive transfer session. Has anyone ever experienced this problem, and if so were you able to fix it? Is there a way to recreate the encrypted partition, transfer the files, and then decrypt them to their usable state? Or can the files somehow be decrypted through other means? UPDATE: I am running Windows 7 (x64) HP now, but may have been runninG ENT. then. Toshiba Laptop 650GB HDD / 4GB Mem. Latest version of TC

• "Launch Failed. Binary Not Found." Snow Leopard and Eclipse C/C++ IDE issue.

  Not a question, I've just scoured the internet in search of a solution for this problem and thought I'd share it with the good folks of SO. I'll put it in plain terms so that it's accessible to newbs. :) (Apologies if this is the wrong place -- just trying to be helpful.) This issue occurs with almost any user OS X Snow Leopard who tries to use the Eclipse C/C++ IDE, but is particularly annoying for the people (like me) who were using the Eclipse C/C++ IDE in Leopard, and were unable to work with Eclipse anymore when they upgraded. The issue occurs When users go to build/compile/link their software. They get the following error: Launch Failed. Binary Not Found. Further, the "binaries" branch in the project window on the left is simply nonexistent. THE PROBLEM: is that GCC 4.2 (the GNU Compiler Collection) that comes with Snow Leopard compiles binaries in 64-bit by default. Unfortunately, the linker that Eclipse uses does not understand 64-bit binaries; it reads 32-bit binaries. There may be other issues here, but in short, they culminate in no binary being generated, at least not one that Eclipse can read, which translates into Eclipse not finding the binaries. Hence the error. One solution is to add an -arch i686 flag when making the file, but manually making the file every time is annoying. Luckily for us, Snow Leopard also comes with GCC 4.0, which compiles in 32 bits by default. So one solution is merely to link this as the default compiler. This is the way I did it. THE SOLUTION: The GCCs are in /usr/bin, which is normally a hidden folder, so you can't see it in the Finder unless you explicitly tell the system that you want to see hidden folders. Anyway, what you want to do is go to the /usr/bin folder and delete the path that links the GCC command with GCC 4.2 and add a path that links the GCC command with GCC 4.0. In other words, when you or Eclipse try to access GCC, we want the command to go to the compiler that builds in 32 bits by default, so that the linker can read the files; we do not want it to go to the compiler that compiles in 64 bits. The best way to do this is to go to Applications/Utilities, and select the app called Terminal. A text prompt should come up. It should say something like "(Computer Name):~ (Username)$ " (with a space for you user input at the end). The way to accomplish the tasks above is to enter the following commands, entering each one in sequence VERBATIM, and pressing enter after each individual line. cd /usr/bin rm cc gcc c++ g++ ln -s gcc-4.0 cc ln -s gcc-4.0 gcc ln -s c++-4.0 c++ ln -s g++-4.0 g++ Like me, you will probably get an error that tells you you don't have permission to access these files. If so, try the following commands instead: cd /usr/bin sudo rm cc gcc c++ g++ sudo ln -s gcc-4.0 cc sudo ln -s gcc-4.0 gcc sudo ln -s c++-4.0 c++ sudo ln -s g++-4.0 g++ Sudo may prompt you for a password. If you've never used sudo before, try just pressing enter. If that doesn't work, try the password for your main admin account. OTHER POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS You may be able to enter build variables into Eclipse. I tried this, but I don't know enough about it. If you want to feel it out, the flag you will probably need is -arch i686. In earnest, GCC-4.0 worked for me all this time, and I don't see any reason to switch now. There may be a way to alter the default for the compiler itself, but once again, I don't know enough about it. Hope this has been helpful and informative. Good coding!

Another is a 'multiple row' datawindow, where each row in the datawindow relates to a row in 'Order', used for spreadsheet-like data entry Functionality extentions have create a detail table, say 'Suppliers', where an order may require multiple suppliers to fill the order. Normally, suppliers are not required, because they are already in the warehouse (0), or there may need to be an order to a supplier to complete an order (1), or multiple suppliers may need to be contacted (more than one). As a single order is entered, once the items are entered, a User Object is populated depending on the status of the items in the warehouse. If required, this creates a 1-to-many relationship between the order and the "backorder". In the PB side, there is a single object uo_backorder which is created on the window, and is referenced by the window depending on the command (button popup, save, etc) I have been tasked to create the 'backorder' functionality on the spreadsheet-line window. Previously the default options for backorders were used when orders were created from the multiple-row window. A workaround already exists where unconfirmed orders could be opened in the single-row window, and the backorder information manipulated there. However, the userbase wants this functionality on the one window. Since the functionality of uo_backorder already exists, I assumed I could just copy the code from the single-order window, but create an array of uo_backorder objects to cope with multiple rows. It is associating the visual object placed on the face of the main window to each array cell, so anytime I reference the array cell object it's actually referencing the one original object, not the new instances that I (thought) I was creating. If I change the code iuo_backorders[ll_count+1] = create uo_backorder the code doesn't run, saying that it failed to initalize the popup window. I think this is related to the class being called the same thing as the instance. What I want to end up with is an array of uo_backorder objects that I can associate to each row of my datawindow (first row = first cell, etc). I think the issue lays in the fact it's a visual object, and I can't seem to get the window to run without adding a dummy object on the face of the window (functionality from the original single-row window). Since it's a VISUAL object, does the object indeed need to be embedded on the windowface for the window to know what object I'm talking about? If so, how does one create multiple windowface objects (one to many, depending on when a row is added)? Don't hesitate to inquire regarding any more information this issue may require from myself. I have no idea what is 'standard' or 'default' in PB, or what is custom and needs more explaining.

According to the EXLT instructions "The format pattern string is interpreted as described for the JDK 1.1 SimpleDateFormat class." [I used current version]. I'm specifing the month in accordance to SimpleDateFormat class as 'dd MMMMM yyyy' so that the month will be the full month's name, for example January. But it doesn't work :( I've looked in EXSLT stylesheet and it has got the logic to do that. Also there is logic to display the name of the week for a day using 'E' pattern, which doesn't work for me. Maybe changing from using document() to variables broke it. Would really appreciate any help. Many thanks!
