• USB port causing device problems after new motherboard upgrade

  I'm looking into a PC with an issue with one of the front USB ports (perhaps both). It was working before a motherboard upgrade but since then, a USB drive was inserted, overheated and does not appear to be working. Then a phone (with USB charging) was plugged in, and the phone OS suspended. Removing and re-inserting the battery led to the phone (and hence battery) working, however the battery no longer charges (including with a wall charger). It seems too much to be a coincidence and am wondering what the issue may be? Ideas so far are short circuiting, or over-current to the USB ports. Note: Did not occur to me, so details are not 100% accurate or complete. Feel free to ask for missing info that I may have forgotten though.

• how did my laptop lose daylight savings time on power loss?

  it was an old laptop that may or may not have dead CMOS battery (at least it had time reset to 0 when I dusted it off). So, it was plugged into power for awhile without the main battery and the clock was correct. Then there was a power outage. When I subsequently turned it on, surprise-surprise, it had one hour off correct time. So the clock apparently kept running during the outage, but daylight savings time info vanished (from disk? where is it stored?) How come?

• LAMP server has gone down a few times. Ideas for server optimization?

  Hi all, Our production web server has gone down a few times over the course of the last half year. In the end, we've needed to contact the web host and have them restart as I'm unable to even SSH in. This appears to only affect the web server and not the MySQL database server which is separate. When it affects the web server, all hosted websites time out. I'd like to examine web server optimization/corrections to get to the root of this issue. Any recommendations on how to proceed with that? I'm sure log files would play a role. I'm able to find my way around a Linux-based server and make needed changes, but would be interested in any tips I may not have thought of yet. It may be best for us to speak with an outside consultant as another option. Thanks.

• Can I use standard tools to get the full name of a process, when its name has embedded spaces?

  I understand that it may be a rare situation for an executable to have spaces in it, but it could happen. An example may be the best explanation.. Using standard tools, I want to determine the location (on the file system) of the executable which owns(?) the current window... get the current window ID ...(xdotool getactivewindow ) use the ID to get the PID ...(wmctrl -p -l | sed ... ID .... use the PID to get the executable's name ... (ps -A ... here is where I run into problems ! Whith ps, when listing only the executable's name (-o ucmd), it truncates the name to 15 characters, so this rules out this option for any name which is longer. Widening the column (-o ucmd:99 ) makes no difference.. If pgrep is anything to go by, its matching is limited to 15 because of stat (see: info pgrep).. Listings in variants of "full" mode (eg -A w w) are not useful when the name concerned has spaces in it, because this name is separated from its args by another space!.. Also, in "full" mode, if the process was started by a link, the name of the link is shown, rather than the executable's name. Is there some way to do this (using standard tools)? ...or are spaces a show stopper here?

• Direct Access on Server 2012

  Scenario: Windows Server 2012 with the Remote Access role installed. IP set to static, registered DNS. 3 domain controllers, all running Server 2003 (I suspect this may be the issue) Done so far: DNS registered, firewall turned off after IPsec was applied. Able to ping all 3 DC's with no issues Problem: Going through the DA wizard generates this error. I am logged in as a domain admin, verified that I can ping the DC, verified IPsec allows me to contact it. Since this version hasnt been readily deployed yet, there isnt much help available online from what I can find. Any assistance ayone could provide would be greatly appreciated. I am still new to the server world as far as things are considered. I would fit, user wise, between Superuser.com and serverfault.com (junior admin) Thanks to anyone who may be able to assist!

  Once you start reading about Daylight Saving Time changes in MyOracleSupport you'll find still a lot of notes explaining this and that and back and forth. But sometimes there seems to be a bit too much information - and lacking clear instructions. Once a customer called that the "Time Zone Spaghetti" after reading MOS notes about DST for several hours ending up with the note where he has begun to read before still not clear what to do now I'm using usually the scripts from MOS Note:977512.1 as you'll just have to exchange the DST version you are upgrading to and it has everything you need to check and adjust the time zone data in the database - for instance after applying the DST V18 patch to your database's homes. As a reminder to myself when traveling I have stored a copy of the script part of that note here - and please note that this is not an official Oracle version. Always read and check the original MOS Note:977512.1 as it may have gotten changed in between and may contain changes or corrections and as it has a lot of more explainationary information than I could cover here. • How would you model an objects representing different phases of an entity life cycle?

  I believe the scenario is common mostly in business workflows - for example: loan management the process starts with a loan application, then there's the loan offer, the 'live' loan, and maybe also finished loans. all these objects are related, and share many fields all these objects have also many fields that are unique for each entity the variety of objects maybe large, and the transformation between the may not be linear (for example: a single loan application may end up as several loans of different types) How would you model this? some options: an entity for each type, each containing the relevant fields (possibly grouping related fields as sub entities) - leads to duplication of data. an entity for each object, but instead of duplicating data, each object has a reference to it's predecessor (the loan doesn't contain the loaner details, but a reference to the loan application) - this causes coupling between the object structure, and the way it was created. if we change the loan application, it shouldn't effect the structure of the loan entity. one large entity, with fields for the whole life cycle - this can create 'mega objects' with many fields. it also doesn't work well when there's a one to many or many to many relation between the phases.

  I have read so much on all this but not entirely sure I understand what has gone on. Also, is this one, two or three problems? It looks to me like three, but it's all very confusing: Beast CRIME Beach It seems the solution may be to simply not use compression with HTTPS traffic (or is that just on one of them?) I use GZIP compression. Is that okay, or is that part of the problem? I also use Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Also, is non-HTTPS traffic okay? So after reading all the theory I just want the solution. I think this may be the solution, but can someone please confirm I have understood everything so I am not likely to suffer from this attack: SOLUTION: Use GZIP compression on HTTP traffic, but don't use any compression on HTTPS traffic

I'm researching a web host for a client and am looking for any recommendations of hosts you may have used and been happy with. Here are the requirements I've been given: The hosting service needs to either provide or allow us to add the following functionality: i. ASP/ASP.Net ii. video streaming iii. audio streaming iv. reporting v. RSS feeds vi. site search vii. forums viii. podcasts ix. Flash x. CMS: looking at using Percussion Software xi. PII registration xii. tie into SF.com (Sales Force) They also want to have a pre-prod server available so they can test the website before going public with it. • Quitting a small start-up where you are a primary developer?

  Just curious to hear from other people who may have been in similar situations. I work for a small startup (very small) where I am the main developer for a major part of the app they are building, the other dev they have does a different area of work than I do so couldn't take over my part. I've been with the company 5 months, or so, but I am looking at going to a more stable company soon because its just getting to be too much stress, overtime, pressure, etc for too little benefit and I miss working with other developers who can help out on a project. The guy is happy with my work and I think I've helped them get pretty far but I've realized I just don't like being this much "on the edge" as its hard to tell what the direction of the company is going to be since its so new. Also, even though I'm the main dev for the project, I would still only consider myself a mid-level dev and am selling myself as such for the new job search. Just to add more detail, I'm not a partner or anything in the company and this was never discussed, so I just work on a W2 (with no benefits of course). I work at home so that makes it easier to leave, I guess, but I don't want to just screw the guy over but also don't want to be tied in for too long. Obviously I would plan to give 2 weeks notice at least, but should I give more? How should I bring up the subject because I know its going to be a touchy thing to bring up. Any advice is appreciated UPDATE: Thanks everyone for posting on this, I have now just completed the process of accepting an offer with a larger company and quitting the startup. I have given 2 weeks notice and have offered to make myself available after that if needed, basically its a really small company at this point so it would only be 1 dev that I would have to deal with... anyways, it looks like it may work out well as far as me maintaining a good relationship with the founder for future work together, I made it out to be more of a personal / lifestyle issue than about their flaws / shortcomings which definitely seems to help in leaving on a good note

• Tracing what program is making a network connnection? (CentOS)

  I was wondering if it is possible to find out which process is trying to make a specific network connection. On a server I support which hosts websites for about 200 users, the iptables firewall keeps blocking, as it should, a connection to 212.117.169.139 on port 80. Firefox reports this as an attack page (and at the least is obvious spam, if not malicious). It seems something on this server is trying to access this site for some reason, and although it's being blocked successfully, the requests seem to be going through every two to sixty seconds and I'd like to be able to find what process or script is doing this so I can handle it appropriately. Besides doing a grep to try and find if this IP is in some file (which probably won't even work because it may be working by hostname or it may be encoded), is there any way to find out some more information?   I have a file containing a text: PADLST20120907:D:05B:UN:IBTA+TK4 17 JFL01+01'BGM+250+C'RFF+TN:TK4 I want to find this file in Linux, using these two strings: "JFL" and "20120907". As you see above, the file contains both "JFL" and "20120907". What should I write in command line? Stirngs may or may not be in the same line. I want to see file names with full path in the output. I don't want to see error messages or permission denied warnings. I want to search recursively in the directory I am standing in or I would like to specifiy a path. regards

• 'Buy the app' landing page implementations

  My site (using Django) has an app that I'm trying to push - I currently have a piece of middleware that redirects the user to a page advertising the app if they're accessing the page on the iPhone, then setting a cookie so that the user isn't bugged by the message every time they visit the site. This works fine, however checking the page with the mobile Googlebot checker shows that the Googlebot gets stuck in the redirect (since it doesn't store cookies) and therefore won't index the proper content. So, I'm trying to think of an alternative implementation that won't hurt the site's Google ranking and won't have any other adverse effects. I've considered a couple of options: Redirect (the current solution), but don't redirect if the user agent matches the Googlebot's UA string. This would be ideal, however I'm not sure if Google like their bot being treated differently from other users, and I'm afraid the site's ranking may be somehow penalised if I go ahead with this. Use a Javascript popup instead of a redirect. This would make sure the Googlebot finds the content it needs, however I envision this approach causing compatibility issues with the myriad mobile devices/browsers out there, and may affect the page load time. How valid are these options? And is there a better option for implementing this feature out there? I've tried researching this topic but surprisingly can't find any reputable-looking blog posts that explore this topic. EDIT: I posted this on SF because it seemed unsuitable for SO, but if there's another site that would be better for this issue then I'd be happy to move the question elsewhere.

  One of the tools I've found invaluable in answering questions on SU is the snipping tool. I may on occasion need to take screenshots of part of the start screen or 'modern' apps. I may not want to take a complete screenshot, and while I can use PrtSc and switch back into desktop to paste it, this is clunky if I need to document a multi-step process. Can I use the snipping tool on modern apps or the start screen? If not is there a configurable way to save a series of screenshots to a fixed folder, say when I press a combination of keys, so I can work, screenshot, then crop and annotate the folder of images?

• Ternary and Artificial Intelligence

  Not much of a programmer myself, however I have been thinking about the future of AI. If a fully functional AI is programmed in a binary environment as is used in current computing, would that create a bit of a black and white personality? As in just yes/no, on/off, 1/0? I will use the Skynet computer from the Terminator series as a bad analogy; it is brought online and comes to the conclusion that humanity should just be destroyed so the problem is resolved, basically its only options were; fire the missiles or not. (The films do not really go into what its moves would be after doing such a thing, but that goes into the realms of AI evolution so does not really fit with this question.) It may also have been badly programmed. Now, the human mind has been akin to a ternary system which allows our "out of the box" thinking along with all the other wonderful things our minds can do. So, would it not be more prudent to create a functional ternary system and program an AI using it so the resulting personality would be able to benefit from the third "maybe" (so to speak) option? I understand that in binary there are ways to get around the whole yes/no etc. way of things, however the basic operations are still just 1's and 0's. Again with using the above bad Skynet analogy; if it could have had that third "maybe" option as part of its core system, it may have decided to not launch due to being able to make sense of the intricacies of human nature and the politics of such a move etc. In effect, my question is; Would an AI benefit more from ternary computing as opposed to binary due to the inclusion of -1, or 2, dependent on the system ("maybe," as I call it)?

• Remove Windows 7's limitation on number of concurrent tcp connections (http web requests)

  I have an application that tries to open as many http requests as possible (in order to stress test a proxy implementation) It seems to me that Win7 (SP1) may have a limitation on number of concurrent opened connection (it may be the so called half-open state if I'm not wrong). Is there something I can do for client ? and also I test using a vista PC that acts as a proxy server. It would be great if I could configure it to sustain at least 50 new connections initiated / second on client side and many more on server. I made the modification according to this technet article by setting TcpNumConnections = 150 but it doesn't make a difference. I still only see about 20 tcp sockets associated with my http client by using tcpview.

• Grub menu not waiting despite of GRUB_TIMEOUT=10

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 installed along side of windows 7. The grub menu doesn't seem obey GRUB_TIMEOUT=10, I see the grub menu there for a split second and it immediately defaults to the first option. Grub menu worked fine when I first installed ubuntu. I am not able to pinpoint what exactly broke it(maybe some update?). I did resize my ubuntu partition using gparted but am not sure if that is what caused it. here are my settings from etc/default/grub GRUB_DEFAULT=0 #GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0 #GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true GRUB_TIMEOUT=10 GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian` GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="" How do I fix this? • CentOS 5.5 Package documentation

  Usually when I install a common package like PostgreSQL or MySQL or Python etc using Yum it installs the files held within those packages into locations specific to CentOS itself. It may also install scripts specific to CentOS only. These paths may not be the same as the defaults found within the source distributions found on the PostgreSQL, MySQL, Python etc project websites and the scripts are usually unique to CentOS. Recently when I installed PostgreSQL under Ubuntu I found some very nice distribution specific information about how the install was organized and how to use the package in a Ubuntu way. I found this information in /usr/share/doc/ Is there any such information included within CentOS?
