• Python imaging alternatives

  I have python code that needs to do just a couple simple things to photographs: crop, resize, and overlay a watermark. I've used PIL, and the resample/resize results are TERRIBLE. I've used imagemagick, and the interface and commands were designed by packaging a cat in a box, and then repeatedly throwing it down a set of stairs at a keyboard. I'm looking for something which is not PIL or Imagemagick that I can use with python to do simple, high-quality image transformations. For that matter, it doesn't even have to have python bindings if the command line interface is good. Oh, and it needs to be relatively platform agnostic, our production servers are linux, but some of our devs develop on windows. It can't require the installation of a bunch of silly gui code to use as a library, either.

  Windows command line, I want to search a file for all rows starting with: # NNN "<file>.inc" where NNN is a number and <file> any string. I want to use findstr, because I cannot require that the users of the script install ack. Here is the expression I came up with: >findstr /r /c:"^# [0-9][0-9]* \"[a-zA-Z0-9_]*.inc" all_pre.txt The file to search is all_pre.txt. So far so good. Now I want to pipe that to another command, say for example more. >findstr /r /c:"^# [0-9][0-9]* \"[a-zA-Z0-9]*.inc" all_pre.txt | more The result of this is the same output as the previous command, but with the file name as prefix for every row (all_pre.txt). • Question about Java File Reader.

  Hello. I'm having some problems with the FileReader class. How do I specify an offset in the lines it goes through, and how do I tell it when to stop? Let's say I want it to go through each line in a .txt file, but only lines 100-200 and then stop? How would I do this? Right now I'm using ReadLine() but I don't think there's a way to specify offset with that. Any fast help is VERY appreciated. Thanks.

  I've set up Tramp on Emacs on my Windows 7 box (64 bit). For this test, this is the only thing in my emacs-config: (setq tramp-default-method "plink") Then I connect to my Ubuntu Server 9.10 running in a VM on my local network. Connection goes fine, i can use dired to browse folders and open files. Yay! However, git status shows up as: Git:master^M An when i open speedbar all folders and files ends with ^M, ie: <+ conf/^M Does anyone know how to prevent this line-ending collision from occurring?

• How do I handle a missing mandatory argument in Ruby OptionParser?

  In OptionParser I can make an option mandatory, but if I leave out that value it will take the name of any following option as the value, screwing up the rest of the command line parsing. Here is a test case that echoes the values of the options: $ ./test_case.rb --input foo --output bar output bar input foo Now leave out the value for the first option: $ ./test_case.rb --input --output bar input --output Is there some way to prevent it taking another option name as a value? • Can you tune C runtime heap segment reservation size on XP?

  When the VC6 C runtime on XP can't serve an allocation request within an existing heap segment, it reserves a new segment. The size of these new segments increase by factors of 2 (until there are not large enough free areas to do that, at which point it falls down to smaller segments.) In any case, is there any way to control this behavior on XP with the VC6 runtime? For example, doubling up to a point, but capping at 64MB segments. If there is no way on XP but there is on 7, that would be good to know too. Or if there is no way on VC6 but there is on VC8 or up would be interesting.

So there are times when I want the command window to not show up and times when I want it to stay open so that the user can see what happened, possibly respond with the appropriate input. • PHP set timeout for script, set_time_limit not working

  I have a command-line PHP script that runs a wget request using each member of an array with foreach. This wget request can sometimes take a long time so I want to be able to set a timeout for killing the script if it goes past 15 seconds for example. I have PHP safemode disabled and tried set_time_limit(15) early in the script, however it continues indefinitely. I've given up troubleshooting set_time_limit() and was trying to find other ways to kill the script after 15 seconds of execution. However, I'm not sure if it's possible to check the time a script has been running while it's in the middle of a wget request at the same time (a do while loop did not work). Thanks for any tips!

  I'm trying to make a PHP script that will take a potentially infinite number of URLs from the command line as arguments. I also need to pass an argument that only has a single numeric value possible (to specify timeout), e.g.: ./urltest.php 60 url1.com url2.com url3.com I'm not exactly sure how to specify argv[1] to be a single numeric variable while at the same time the rest of the arguments (i.e. the list of urls) go into an array.   I'm trying to create a macro for Keyboard Maestro for OS X doing the following: Get name of newest file in a directory on my disk based on date created; Paste the text "newest file: " plus the name of the newest file. One of its options is to "Execute a shell script", so I thought that would do it for 1. After Googling around a bit I came up with this: cd /path/to/directory/ ls -t | head -n1 This sorts it right, and returns the first filename. However, it also seems to includes a line break, which I do not want. As for 2: I can output the text "newest file: " with a different action in the app, and paste the filename behind that. But I'm wondering if you can't return "random text" + the outcome of the ls command. So my question is: can I do this only using the ls command? And how do I get just the name of the latest file without any linebreaks or returns?

• Killing a program if it displays a dialog box (devenv.com running under CruiseControl.net)

  I have CruiseControl.net running Visual Studio (2005/2008 - using devenv.com) as we need to build deployment projects (.vdproj). At times, for various reasons devenv decides that even though it was run from the command line, using the devenv.com varient, it still wants to put up a dialog box. Now, as it's running under CruiseControl.net on a remote server this is never seen and the only syptom of this is that the build eventually times out. When the build is still in progress a look at the tasks shows devenv running but not consuming any processor power. Is there a handy utility through which could run devenv.com which basically watches the program it starts up and basically kills it if it dares to display a dialog box of any kind?

• Open ms word in "compare document" mode from command prompt.

  I am working on a web project where client needs a functionality to first upload some MS word document & then he can compare any two of the uploaded documents. The idea I came up with is to first make the documents available using WEBDAV & then open both documents using command line with "Compare side by side" option. In this way he will be able to compare & modify two documents. The problem is, I am not able to find any command which can be run from command prompt to open two documents in compare mode. Question cribbed from here. Unfortunately I don't understand the solution and am not sure what to do beyond compiling with the -g option and running the command M-x gdb.

I've dug up the fact that you need to pass "WT.srch=1" over in the url from the advert, but are there other parameters which you can use to segment: Campaign Adgroup Ad network I know you can do this with Google Analtics at the drop of a button using the various UTM tags, but Webtrends seems to use the proprietary WT. tags. • Creating a variable-speed slideshow based on USB input on OSX.

  I have a friend who is trying to put together a geeky little contraption for a wedding, where people can view a slideshow. Neither of us use Macs, nor have programmed for one, but for various reasons it has to run on a Mac. There will be a USB ammeter hooked up to a bike dynamo. What we want is for a slideshow to be run, and advance at a speed relative to how fast someone is pedaling on a stationary bike. After much googling, it seems like we could load an iPhoto slideshow up via applescript. Is it possible to pause the slideshow and advance it with keypress commands? The applescript commands would be run via a bash script or similar that would monitor the value returned by the USB ammeter's command-line app and issue the keypress events accordingly. Is there some other app that could be likewise scripted to display photos?Hoping someone has some hints to get us started in the right direction! Thanks!

  Each tweet has a single URL such as http://twitter.com/#!/DeliciousHot/status/23189589820702720. The tweet identification (/DeliciousHot/status/23189589820702720) is in the URL fragment segment which is not actually sent to server. Originally, I thought it works this way: The URL response doesn't have this tweet specific info. It is JavaScript module that extracts tweet id from current browser URL and fetch tweet payload with AJAX. The page content is then updated with the tweet payload. To my surprise, it is doesn't work this way! With Firebug, you can view that response of http://twitter.com/#!/DeliciousHot/status/23189589820702720 has tweet payload "10 Signs of a True Gentleman" text in inline JavaScript. The tweet payload is not fetched by another AJAX. So, how does Twitter server get to know the expected tweet ID even it is in URL fragment segment?

  I am having some troubles using the CGContext with an iPhone app. I am trying to draw several lines with different colors, but all the lines always end up having to color, which was used last. • Which svn client to install on Windows 7 machine?

  I just got a new PC running Windows 7 (64-bit). I'd like to install an SVN client (command line only, I don't want TortoiseSVN). I'm not sure which of these to install: http://subversion.apache.org/packages.html#windows does anyone have any opinions on this? I tried going for the ones hosted by Tigris, but the downloaded zip says to read an install file hosted at their site, but the link is broken. Do we simply download, then call svn.exe as needed, no need for a real 'install'?
