• How can I neatly embed Flash in a page in a way that is cross-browser compatible?

  When I receive Flash objects from my designer, it comes with an example HTML page which includes both <object> tags and <embed> tags as well as a whole heap of JavaScript. If I copy and paste this code in to my webpage, it works, but the code looks a mess (and there is so much of it!). If I remove the extra code and try either just <embed> or <object> on their own, it works in some browsers, but not others. Is there a neat, minimal method that works in all the major browsers?

• Best database setup for one click games

  I am building a one click game website/mobile app, and I am debating between using MySQL and MongoDB for the backend. The way I have been exploring it is with a NodeJS/Express/Angular/Passport/MongoDB stack - I have also implemented Socket.io. I have gotten to the point where I am sending data from the flash game to the server (NodeJS). The only data that needs to be sent is basic user information, the players score at the end of each game, and some x,y positions for each players game (for anti-cheating). It seems like MySQL would work fine, but as I am already using MongoDB - are there any major drawbacks to continuing to work with MongoDB on this project?

  Hi there, I have two PHP arrays like so: Array of X records containing the ID of Wordpress posts (in a particular order) Array of Wordpress posts The two arrays look something like this: Array One (Sorted Custom Array of Wordpress Post IDs) Array ( [0] => 54 [1] => 10 [2] => 4 ) Array Two (Wordpress Post Array) Array ( [0] => stdClass Object ( [ID] => 4 [post_author] => 1 ) [1] => stdClass Object ( [ID] => 54 [post_author] => 1 ) [2] => stdClass Object ( [ID] => 10 [post_author] => 1 ) ) I would like to sort the array of wordpress posts with the order of the ID's in the first array. • Will the Global Demand for Water Outstrip the Supply by 2030?

  A recent study conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit and sponsored by Oracle Utilities, titled “Water for All?”,considers the preparedness of utilities to supply water to the current global population of over 7 billion people, with a further 1 billion expected by 2030. It compares strategies used by utilities in 10 major countries to address this challenge. This study’s findings show that wide-ranging water management efforts and large-scale investments must be made if utilities are to meet near-certain water stress—demand outstripping supply—by 2030. The report is based on an online survey of 244 executives of water utilities in these countries, supplemented by in-depth interviews with 20 water utility executives and independent experts. The research concludes that utilities worldwide expect to meet future demand, despite increased supply pressure on supplies, due to improvements in water productivity that the wide range of measures utilities and governments will take to ensure that water is used more efficiently.   I've had Kubuntu installed for several years, updating from one major release to another, and now I think I'd like to try to switch to Lubuntu. But since my distribution is already tuned and shaped to satisfy my needs, I'd like not to get a fresh installation, but just purge kubuntu-desktop and install lubuntu-desktop. But when I execute sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop, it gives me an error of the following essence: The following packages have unmet dependencies: lubuntu-desktop : Depends: usb-modeswitch but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. So, I investigate the modeswitch problem and get The following packages have unmet dependencies: usb-modeswitch : Depends: usb-modeswitch-data (>= 20110227-1~) but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. But: Reading state information... Done usb-modeswitch-data is already the newest version. So, my question is: what actions should I take in order to obtain a clean and fresh installation of Lubuntu? And also, how do I safely remove all the kubuntu-desktop-related stuff?

• 3rd Annual South Florida SQL Saturday - August 13th!

  The 3rd annual South Florida SQL Saturday event will be help August 13th, 2011 at Nova Southeastern University in Davie, FL. This is a change in venue from last year as DeVry is in the middle of a major remodling project. We has almost 450 last year, and we expect to have over 500 this year with great speakers such as Andy Warren, Herve Roggero, and more! As always, we our goal is to feed you well, so we are shooting for some hot lunch food this year. We are working on that now and will update you as soon as we firm it up. One of the things we will be trying this year is 90-100 minute sessions on a couple of tracks. We strongly feel that several topics are just getting warmed up in 45 minutes, so we are going to experiment with 90-100 minute sessions on some of the BI topics. We would love to see you there!

• Bandwidth heavy site... use co-location?

  I'm working on a web site that is likely to be very bandwidth-heavy. A major feature of the site when in active use can pull up to 1Mbps for a single session. Luckily, once users get over the new toy factor, the use of this feature will probably be 1-5% or less (probably much less) of session time. However, new users are likely to play with this feature a good bit, especially at launch. I'm very concerned about bandwidth use. This is more or less a niche market, so I won't ever be needing to scale to crazy levels like YouTube. However, it is entirely possible for it to be a couple terabytes/month. Is co-location my best option? What cheap bandwidth services (colocation/hosted/cloud/whatever) are out there?

• I'm working on my resume for a job fair this week; any tips? [closed]

  This will change as I update the document, but here is my resume. The job fair I'm going to is really huge (very good chance that it will determine where I intern this summer), so I would definitely appreciate any possible assistance in polishing this up. Any advice possible will be appreciated, ranging from spacing or absurdly minor formatting issues, to rearranging bullet points, to browser incompatibilities, to major changes in anything I've organised or written. At the moment, my only specific question is whether easter eggs are acceptable (specifically, if representatives who understand the reference will generally frown upon my inclusion of "Hacked The Gibson", given the context). Also, if anyone wants to evaluate it (e.g. font size, final arrangement, etc.), here is a PDF snapshot of the document at the time this question was submitted (the final version will have a different file name and appropriate metadata, for the record). • How to xkill an application by its id?

  I need to simulate the behavior of the keyboard shortcut (ALT+F4) using Terminal for a given application. If I open for example gedit and click ALT + F4 , then GEDIT will be xkilled. If I want to achieve same thing using Terminal, how should I proceed? The command export PIDTOKILL=pidof gedit | grep [^*]; xkill -id $PIDTOKILL does not work and gives the following error: xkill: killing creator of resource 0x3f38 X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation) Major opcode of failed request: 113 (X_KillClient) Value in failed request: 0x3f38 Serial number of failed request: 8 Current serial number in output stream: 9 I think I am confusing application id and process id here

• Using a Higher Precision (than 8-bit unsigned integer) Buffered Image for Heightmaps in Java

  I am generating a heightmap for every quad in my quadtree in openCL. The way I was creating the image is as follows: DataBufferInt dataBuffer = (DataBufferInt)img.getRaster().getDataBuffer(); int data[] = dataBuffer.getData(); //img is a bufferedimage inputImageMem = CL.clCreateImage2D( context, CL_MEM_READ_WRITE | CL_MEM_USE_HOST_PTR, new cl_image_format[]{imageFormat}, size, size, size * Sizeof.cl_uint, Pointer.to(data), null); This works ok but the major issue is that as the quads get smaller and smaller the 8-bit format of the buffered image starts to cause intolerable "stepping" issues as seen below: I was wondering if there was an alternate way I could go about doing this?   I've got the following query: select distinct a.id, a.name from Employee a join Dependencies b on a.id = b.eid where not exists ( select * from Dependencies d where b.id = d.id and d.name = 'Apple' ) and exists ( select * from Dependencies c where b.id = c.id and c.name = 'Orange' ); I have two tables, relatively simple. The first Employee has an id column and a name column The second table Dependencies has 3 column, an id, an eid (employee id to link) and names (apple, orange etc). the data looks like this Employee table looks like this id | name ----------- 1 | Pat 2 | Tom 3 | Rob 4 | Sam Dependencies id | eid | Name -------------------- 1 | 1 | Orange 2 | 1 | Apple 3 | 2 | Strawberry 4 | 2 | Apple 5 | 3 | Orange 6 | 3 | Banana As you can see Pat has both Orange and Apple and he needs to be excluded and it has to be via joins and i can't seem to get it to work. • Best choice for 3D Physics Engine for C#/XNA

  Since 2007 I've been working on the development of an open-source game engine, and have been using JigLibX for 3D Physics. However, the developers on the project have stopped contributing to it for over 2 years now, and it's lacking features I need, or have major bugs in certain features. What are some good choices for 3D physics engines that are written purely in C#? Are there any that are more complete than JigLibX? EDIT: I just stumbled upon an engine called BEPUphysics. It was supported up until May 2012, which is fairly recent. I may check it out, any information that you guys could give on how complete the engine is would be great.

• Finding the displacment of a robot [closed]

  I'm building a quadruped (4 legs 3 DOF) for my major work in electronics at high school. I need to know the displacement of the robot and I can't use an encoding wheel. I've done my research and I found a system where I use an accelerometer, gyroscope and a magnetometer to determine the displacement but I'm not sure how to code it. I'm using Arduino and will use compatible sensors. I would like to be able to implement something similar to this video which demonstrates the principles evaluated in this paper. I don't need to map the data on a screen, just be able to read its displacement from its last recorded position. EG. (Read Position) --- (Do "stuff") --- (Read Position) --- (Calculate displacement caused by "stuff")

• How can I really master a programming language?

  I know that learning a language, you can simply buy a book, follow the examples, and whenever possible try the exercises. But what I'm really looking is how to master the language once you've learned it. Now I know that experience is one major factor, but what about learning the internals of the language, what is the underlying structure, etc. There are articles out there saying read this book, read that book, make this game and that game. But to me this doesn't mean to master a language. I want to be able to read other people's code and understand it, no matter how hard that is. To understand when to use a function and when another, etc etc. The list could go on and on but I believe I've made the point. :) And finally, take whatever language as an example if needed, though best would be if C was taken as an example.

• I've totally missed the point of distributed vcs [closed]

  I thought the major benefit of it was that each developers code gets stored within each others repository. My impression was that each developer has their working directory, their own repository, and then a copy of the other developers repository. Removing the need for central server, as you have as many backups as you have developers/repositories Turns out this is nto the case, and your code is only backed up (somewhere other than locally) when you push, the same as a commit in subversions. I am bit disappointed ... hopefully I will be pleasantly surprised when it handles merges better and there are less conflicts ?

• Must all new features go through betatest?

  Obviously, small usability fixes and bugfixes go directly into the stable product. What about small new features? Can you afford to just release them after internal testing, or do they have to be betatested by customers first? Situation: This is a young commercial project, produced by a one-person company. It has an existing userbase and is at it's second major version. Previous betatests have produced some results, however most feedback came from the stable product and not from beta versions.

  I have some customers, who expect everything for next to nothing. They also want things to be a certain way, or look a certain way, but when explaining to them why it's not a good idea, and offering suggestions, they don't listen. When things go wrong, they get moody, and demand I do something about it, but when told that it's because they wanted it that way, they don't listen. I've found that after years of being around these types of people, it's had a major impact on the way I deal with people I can't stand, and I've seriously run out of ideas. How do you deal with people who never listen, never learn, and want everything for free?

  There are some job requirements of project management experience for a programmer, such as: the candidate has to have some experience managing a project, not necessarily with subordinates, but rather having worked on a project all the way from design down to test. I was wondering what "subordinates" mean here? if there are some books, webpages or elsewhere with both general guideline and simple practical sample projects to help one get some basics about the whole process of a project. I am particularly interested in projects for both Linux and Windows, in C, C++, Python, Java. I am considering to start by playing on my own, not eager to find a company yet. My major was not CS, so I might lack the basics.

• Which is quicker? Memcache or file query? (using maxmind geoip.dat file)

  Hi, I'm using Python on Appengine and am looking up the geolocation of an IP address like this: import pygeoip gi = pygeoip.GeoIP('GeoIP.dat') Location = gi.country_code_by_addr(self.request.remote_addr) (pygeoip can be found here: http://code.google.com/p/pygeoip/) I want to geolocate each page of my app for a user so currently I lookup the IP address once then store it in memcache. My question - which is quicker? Looking up the IP address each time from the .dat file or fetching it from memcache? Are there any other pros/cons I need to be aware of? For general queries like this, is there a good guide to teach me how to optimise my code and run speed tests myself? I'm new to python and coding in general so apologies if this is a basic concept.
