• VMware Infrastructure Web Access 2.0.0 stuck at "Loading"

  We have a Ubuntu 11 server running VMware virtual machines. We manage it using VMware Infrastructure Web Access 2.0.0. My colleague is able to use it successfully with Internet Explorer 9. However, I am stuck with an empty login page that says "Loading" in the title when trying to connect. It happens in all browsers (IE9, Firefox, Chrome, Opera). My colleague also gets stuck at "Loading" if he tries another browser. How can I resolve this problem?

  Need to clone and restore existing 64GB HDD onto a 256GB HDD, can't manage to gain access to the internals of this laptop. I checked with Samsung, they do not make manuals available nor will they help over the phone as to how to remove the bottom cover of this Samsung NP900X1A Laptop. They did offer to sell me a manual BUT they are out of stock for another 10-15 days. I saw the screws under the 4 rubber feet and 4 rubber grommets, all removed but the cover is still on.   Hello I cannot copy photos and paste them from a word document into the text of an email on my Sony Laptop having already substantially redcued the size of the photos using Microsoft Office Picture Manager. I can readily manage to perform this functjon from my work place PC but am presently working mostly from home. I am trying to email photos and text using a btinternet.com email address but have checked that I cannot perform the task using my alternate googlemail email address either. I can obviously highlight the relevant photographs but whenever I try to copy or cut them into the email text the paste function is disabled. Assistance would be much appreciated. Kind regards Simon

• LVM, Soft RAID1, and Replication?

  Hi all, I am practicing putting together a HA file server. It is a linux server with 2 1.5TB Hard drives. My plan is to use LVM to manage the physical volumes into logical volumes for /, /home, and /var. Then use md (soft RAID 1) to mirror the image onto the second HDD, THEN use DRDB to mirror the entire setup another server. Is this overkill? Would I just be okay with just md and DRDB? The system will serve user's homedirs (~100) and probably some groupware or other local intranet. On my own machines I've always separated root and /home partitions in case I break something, I can easily reinstall the OS. Should I follow that same theory here? If so I need LVM, because I really can't predict where we'll need more space, /var or /home.

• Can't remove Internet Explorer Add-On

  I'm using IE8 on Windows 7. I'm trying to delete an add-on from my "Manage Add-ons" panel. But when I double click the add-on I'd like to delete, the "Remove" button is grayed out. Only the disable option is available. I've gone to the path it points to and deleted that folder. I've also searched the registry to delete keys and went to Control Panel to uninstall the related installation package. Any ideas?

• Add domain user as local admin in Windows 7 using VPN to connect to domain

  I am rebuilding my work computer from scratch and need to add my domain user as a local admin on my computer. I have successfully added my PC to the domain, but I cannot add my domain user account to the local admins. I have tried to do the following: Connect to the work domain using a Windows VPN Add my computer to the work domain Start right click on Computer Manage - go to Users and Groups right click on Administrators group and add my domain user The problem is that after adding my domain user to the Administrators group, I don't see my domain user under the Local Users group. When I try to log on as my domain user I get the following error message: There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request Any ideas?

  I use msysgit on Windows to use git, but I often want to navigate through a Windows-style *.lnk shortcut. I typically manage my file structure through Windows' explorer, so using a different type of shortcut (such as creating hard or soft link in git) isn't feasible. How would I navigate through this type of shortcut? • Virtual hosting in Varnish with individual vcl files for configuration

  I wish to use varnish to put in front of an apache and a tomcat on the same server. Depending on the ip requested, it goes to a different backend. This works. Now for most of the sites the default varnish logic will work just fine. However for some specific sites I wish to use custom VCL code. I can test for host name and include config files for the specific domains, but this only works inside the individual methods recv etc. Is there a way to include a complete set of instructions, in one file, per domain, without having to manage separate files for subdomain_recv, subdomain_fetch etc? And preferably without running seperate instances of varnish. When I try to include a file on the "root level" of default.vcl, I get a compilation error. Best regards, Michael

• Prevent auto forwarding NDR loops

  a week ago we experienced a really sweet problem at a client of ours. They are a school with around 1200 users, and everyone of them has auto forwarding for all mail activated. We use Exchange 2010 Now a few of the users where able to make NDR loops by adding 2 different, wrong, destinations. We had around 80k mails sent within a few hours. Not very practical. My question is, does anyone know a good way to prevent something like this. I have found 2 ways, which both fail for their own reasons We could manage the auto forwarding on the exchange host itself, which should prevent this looping problem someone said. But 1200 Users, not on my watch. There is a Powershell script out in the wild which should work against that, but my employers want something more "professional" Thank you very much for your support Linus

• sharepoint 2007 access denied when accessing user profiles via ssp

  Guys I have a really strange problem in regards to sharepoint mysites today I go into user profiles and properties in order to setup a property all of a sudden I get access denied. First off I know that I'm logged in with the correct account after the access denied I decided to click on personalization services and permissions I than get An unhandled exception occurred in the user interface.Exception Information: Cannot complete this action. I'm not seeing anything in the server application logs either. So have any of you guys seen this before is there some kind of way to grant a user account the manage profiles right permission using stsadm. BTW all other fucntions of the ssp are working fine so my question is if the user profiles and my sites of a ssp tanks how do you repair that portion of the ssp? BTW the user accounts that I'm using are site collection owners and also they have full control at the web application level.   Hello, I'm looking for a clean way to centralize user management. The setup: About 10-30 linux machines (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS server) Maybe 10-30 users for now. The requirements (hopes and expectations): A single place for the administrator to manage user accounts, passwords and the list of machines each user has access to. (And probably groups.) Doesn't have to be fancy. Single sign-on for SSH: the user should be able to login from machine A to machine B without re-entering his/her password. A Quick Google searches give me pointers to OpenLDAP and Kerberos, but I'm not sure where to start and what problem will each solution actually solve. Which way to go? I'd love to find a clear that focuses on this subject. (Or: am I asking "a wrong question"?)

• Exim: Change sender address when sending mails out of local network

  We have a working exim setup at a site, where users can send and receive mails. We are trying to setup a server to send some warnings and errors using email to an address that is outside the local network. The problem is: The program that sends the mails sends them using the username it runs under and the local hostname of the server. This cause the mails to have a sender of format: [email protected]. Exim sends these mails to the ISP's SMTP server, which rejects the mails as they have an illegal or unverifiable sender (the internal address). I'm thinking I should configure exim to rewrite the sender when: - sender's domain is on the local network - receiver's domain is outside the local network I tried setting some kind of rewriting in the exim config, but did not manage to get it to work. I'd show what I have tried, but I ran out of time on the last visit to the site, and had to revert to the original version losing all the changes I tried.

• Is it possible to have Grub2's boot.img in the MBR and have it load core.img from a separate boot pa

  I have a multiboot system that I would like to use Grub to manage. The version of Grub shipping with my Linux distro is Grub2, and it installs its equivalent of stage 1.5-2, core.img, into the remaining sectors on the first track after the MBR but before the first partition. Unfortunately, those sectors are needed by another program. I have a separate primary /boot partition. If I could only keep boot.img as my MBR but have it look in the /boot partition for core.img rather than the embedded one in the sectors immediately following the MBR, everything would work fine. Is this possible with grub2?

• Chef cookbooks marked as executed

  I have setup a Chef server in our network that I use to manage several nodes. These nodes have a chef-client installed executing as a daemon every X minutes. The problem is that every time the client runs, it executes the recipes for all the cookbooks, even those previously executed, so it consumes resources and sometimes it even breaks thinks (with services restarts, for example). I know that I can avoid executing a piece of code or a recipe I create as detailed here: Prevent chef recipe from executing previously executed action? but, would this mean that I should modify any cookbook that I download from the opscode repository. In other words, is it possible to make the chef server (or the clients) to mark the cookbooks as 'executed' as soon as they are executed the first time?

• Posting videos to a website... with a dynamically updating interface

  I'm currently putting together a website for my Luddite friend. He needs a blog, photos and videos... all easily updateable by him. WordPress and Blogger both have brilliant functionality to allow you to host your own blog on your own domain, but what about photos and videos? Does YouTube or Google videos or Vimeo or MSN Video or anyone offer the ability to easily insert a video navigation interface onto your own site? (Something similar to YouTube's "Channel" pages, except on your own domain?) Same goes for photos. I'm pretty sure FlickR doesn't allow you to easily upload and manage photos for viewing on your own domain. Does anyone else? My friend doesn't want to be editing any HTML and I don't want to be creating a complicated system to handle tons of different videos. There must a user-friendly solution in this day and age? Our application is written in php and should be able to do the following: send mails to our own users "from: [email protected]" send mails from our clients to their clients "from: [email protected]" We don't need to take care of incoming mails, just send out mails with the correct from and reply-to addresses. We cannot make this work using Google Apps (limited to our own domain in the from-field) and we cannot make google apps or google apps domains for all our clients, so we are looking for another simple to manage and set up solution. • How to clean this Dell Precision M6400

  I have (well, ok, my employer has and I use) a Dell Precision M6400 notebook. It's a decent piece of hardware, but I have at least one major gripe: It's a dust and...uh...crumb (I repent! I repent!) magnet! And I cannot seem to exorcise the dust/crumbs from it! There is a strip of metal above the keyboard that is punched full of tiny holes. Well, maybe it's better to describe them as 'pits'. If a sufficiently small particle finds its way into one of those pits, there is only about a 50% that I will manage to get it out. Consequently, there is now a chorus of tiny little particles silently chiding me about eating cookies a cracker whilst I browse the intarwebs. Does anyone have any suggestions about how I could remove these particles from this machine...while still preserving the function of the machine?

  I manage a virtual office and our staff uses both SSH keys and passwords for authentication. If one of our staff forgets his password, is there a way to encrypt a temporary password using his public RSA ssh key so I can send it to him via e-mail? I've seen other questions related to this one, however the "answers" generally recommend against using the public/private SSH keys to perform general encryption/decryption and do not actually state if this is possible. I would like to know if it is indeed possible and what are the steps to encrypt and then decrypt the password.

• What are the risks in putting website files in the "root" folder of a shared web hosting server?

  A site I've been asked to manage is hosted (shared) on GoDaddy, with this folder structure: / public_html public_ftp mail stats logs etc... However, the website files are stored in the / folder, and NOT in public_html. I'm not sure if this is how GoDaddy sets up their customers' accounts, or if the old web developer accidentally changed it from public_html to root. But when we call up GoDaddy to tell them to correct this (move files to public_html), they won't change it and insist that there is no security risk unless someone gets a hold of the FTP password. Is this true? (I have always read that website files should be inside public_html.) If not, where could this setting be changed? The .htaccess is empty.

• Determine process using a port, without sudo

  I'd like to find out which process (in particular, the process id) is using a given port. The one catch is, I don't want to use sudo, nor am I logged in as root. The processes I want this to work for are run by the same user that I want to find the process id - so I would have thought this was simple. Both lsof and netstat won't tell me the process id unless I run them using sudo - they will tell me that the port is being used though. As some extra context - I have various apps all connecting via SSH to a server I manage, and creating reverse port forwards. Once those are set up, my server does some processing using the forwarded port, and then the connection can be killed. If I can map specific ports (each app has their own) to processes, this is a simple script. Any suggestions? This is on an Ubuntu box, by the way - but I'm guessing any solution will be standard across most Linux distros.

• Prevent member of administrator group loging in via Remote Desktop

  In order to support some build processes on our Server 2003 development servers, we require a common user account that has administrative privs. Unfortuantly, this also means that anyone that knows the password can also gain admin privs on a server. Assume that trying to keep the password secret is a failed exercise. Developers that need admin privs already have admin privs so should be able to log in as themselves. So the question is a simple one: is there anything I can configure to prevent people (ab)using the account to gain administrator on servers they shouldn't have administrator on? I'm aware that devs could disable anything that is put in place, but that's then down to process and auditing to track and manage. I don't mind where or how: it can be via the local security policy, group policy, a batch file executed in the user's profile, or something else.
