  • Multiple login locations for an online app.

    Hello, I am working on a browser based application that will have many users. The catch is that every user should have their own customized login page, but the actual application is the same for everyone, and needs to be in a central location. What is the most secure way of doing this? Would it make more sense to have a copy of the application for each user, and keep the database centralized?     I would like to know the number of users logged into my ASP.NET 2.0 application. Points to be considered: 1) Simplest way would be to use Application or Cache object to have the counts on Session start or end. However this would fail if there is a worker process recycle. Wouldn't it? 2) Should't make a difference whether the session is inproc/state server managed/ or SQL server managed. 3) Should preferably be seamless to a web-farm architecture.

    I want to build a service oriented game server and client using WCF where users can play card games on different tables after they logged in with an account. I would like to choose WCF due to it's flexibility in exchanging the communication channels. Maybe, a web interface will be added later which can then just use an other channel class. An additional plus is the ability for contexts which could be used to track a user over a whole gaming session. Are there some constraints I should be aware of when using WCF for the communication between the client and the server?

  • Issue with mysql backup in cron

    I'm just trying to perform a mysqldump and have it scheduled. I'm using RHEL 5 and have added it to the crontab as shown below: 22 13 * * * root mysqldump --user=root --password=12345 mysqldb /var/backups/mysqldbdate +%d%m.sql The .sql file never ended up in the backups folder. I even attempted to run this command line and it worked fine which tells me its something to do with the cron. Furthermore, I added a simple comand like "ls" and the output to the same directory and it worked fine. Any ideas? Thanks, Aaron

    What is the best way to check if an instance of Microsoft SQL Server is up? I have a view that spans two instances of Microsoft SQL Server but before querying it in a stored procedure I would like to verify that the second instance of the server is up with a fallback option of just querying local data. The second instance is a linked server. Currently I'm considering a SQL CLR function that can attempt to open a connection with a shorter timeout but I'm wondering if it's something that can be done directly in Transact SQL.

    I'm trying to grade a quiz application I would like to make. I have a questions model with and ask(the actual question), 4 choices(a-d), and a correct answer(string). In the view I have the 4 question being diplayed then the correct answer choice (This is just a test for functionality) and then I created a text_field to accept the users answer choice and a button to refresh the index action which has the scoring logic, for now.. --Do I need to put the text_field within a form_tag? <p>1. <%= h @question.q1 %></p> <p>2. <%= h @question.q2 %></p> <p>3. <%= h @question.q3 %></p> <p>4. <%= h @question.q4 %></p> <p>Answer: <%= h @question.correct %></p> <%= text_field_tag :choice, params[:choice] %> <%= button_to "Grade", {:controller => 'site', :action => "index"} %> <p> <%= @answer %></p> Heres the index controller action def index @question = Question.find(1) if @question.correct == params[:choice] @answer = 'right' else @answer = 'wrong' end end Its not really working. The textfield is supposed to take a letter choice like 'a' or 'c' and compare it with the correct answer in the database. I would love this to work by radiobuttons, but I'm a newbie to rails so I thought I'd take baby steps. So if anyone can help me with how to fix this by string, or preferably by radiobuttons, I'd really appreciate it.

    I have been looking around at web applications and websites with rich graphs, charts, and data visualization and for the most part have been able to determine which frameworks or tools websites are using. However I was looking over 'resumup.com' and couldn't determine what they are using. Does anyone know off hand or can you tell?     1 and I've uploaded all the files onto the file server that I am using 000webhost.com however Im having a few problems with the modrewrite I keep getting re-directed to http://error404.000webhost.com/? Does anyone know how to setup cakephp 2.1 on a shared area?? Im getting this error now: Fatal error: Call to undefined function pluginsplit() in /home/a4300629/public_html/lib/Cake/Cache/Cache.php on line 151 not really sure how this error has come about, any ideas?     I am building a whiteboard, which would have a server(teacher) and clients(students). Teacher would draw something on his side, which will be shown exactly same to the students. I want to know which component i should use to do the drawing? i am currently drawing on JPanel . I want the screen of Server gets copied on the clients, so for that what could be the right method to do this? option1: i save the JPanel as image, and send thru socket, and loads it on the screen of client, also it always saves the background image only, not what the user has drawn onto it. OR option2: both server and client JPanel dimensions are same, so i just send the new coordinates drawn everytime thru socket, with some protocol to understand whether it is rubber or pencil.. Any help would be appreciated.

    I have downloaded MySQL ODBC Connector 5.1. Now am trying to setup the DSN. But am getting the error: Connection Failed : [HY000] [MySQL] [ODBC 5.1 Driver]Host '117.x.x.x' is not allowed to connect to this MySQL server My server url is server.myweb.com - this name am entering in the TCP/IP Server and Port =3306. I have also entered the userid and password , which is the one which i enter when i open www.myweb.com/cpanel Is this a version problem? Should the version of MySQL on my server also be 5.1, i.e. the one of the ODBC? Please help.

  • Edit PDF online and save and form data to server

    Hello, I have some PDF documents which are being displayed in the browser, with some fields already being pre-populated from the database using iTextSharp (we are running Windows Server 2008, IIS 7, SQL Server 2008, and ASP.NET 2.0/2.5 with C#). Our clients need to be able to fill in the remaining fields and save the PDF to the server. I have considered the following possibilities: 1.) Somehow using iTextSharp to parse the form fields, grab all the form data and save it to the database on submit. 2.) Adding a submit button to the PDF itself using LiveCycle with some sort of JS click event to save the FDF/XFDF/XDP/XML data either to the database or to a flat file on the server. I am currently unsure as to what the best approach would be, what would work, or how to implement any of these possible solutions, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi I would like to zip a bunch of files (.exe and .dll) before I overwrite them with the new build. Is there a simple way to zip files without using some sort of dll? Just creating a folder with the build number / date time stamp will also work great. How do I pass parameters from the cruise control build process into my Powershell script that will do the work then? Is this a sustainable way to do things? Thanks

    I have there lines in my RegisterToutes : routes.MapRoute("Pages3", "{url1}/{url2}/{url3}", MVC.Page.RedirectTo(), new { url1 = "", url2 = "", url3 = "" }); routes.MapRoute("Pages2", "{url1}/{url2}", MVC.Page.RedirectTo(), new { url1 = "", url2 = "", url3 = "" }); routes.MapRoute("Pages1", "{url1}", MVC.Page.RedirectTo(), new { url1 = "", url2 = "", url3 = "" }); On my local machine and on my demo server (demo.myserver.com/myproject/) it works great for handling the 404, but live(www.mysite.com) it just go to the IIS 404. I have a PageController witch go see if the page exist in the DB and if it don't I return to a 404 view with the status code 404 (Response.StatusCode = 404;) How can I reproduce the same behavior live? Do I need to setup something on IIS? I'm on winserver 2008 using c# and MVC 1.0. Thanks for the help!

    I'm storing copies of database backups on Amazon S3 using the Python Boto library. But I worry that if my web server was hacked, those backups could be deleted using the credentials I need to do the upload. Ok, so I know you can grant permissions to another Amazon email address, so I can imagine doing that after an upload then removing the original user's write access BUT in this scenario I now end up with 2 accounts and 2 sets of invoices to give to accounts every month. Is there a solution to this that doesn't require a new Amazon account for each web server I run?

    I am developing a small browser based game in asp.net. Think of a game room which has a capaticy of 22 players and players join the room by clicking a button. ( I am saving the number of players in the room in database) I need to call a method when the number of players in the room is 22.   • Git workflow idea to push an unfinished local branch to remote for backup purposes

    Say I'm currently working on a new feature which I've branched off of the 'dev' branch and I've been working for several days and it's not yet ready to be merged with 'dev' and pushed. Although I have made several commits and have been pulling changes to dev and then merging dev into my feature branch to keep myself updated. Here's my question. Is it a good idea to push my feature branch to a new branch (with the same name as my local branch) onto origin (say GitHub) just for back-up purposes and later on when it's merged into 'dev' and/or 'master' delete it from origin.

    I am currently in the planning stages of a game for google app engine, but cannot wrap my head around how I am going to handle AI. I intend to have persistant NPCs that will move about the map, but short of writing a program that generates the same XML requests I use to control player actions, than run it on another server I am stuck on how to do it. I have looked at the Task Queue feature, but due to long running processes not being an option on the App engine, I am a little stuck. I intend to run multiple server instances with 200+ persistant NPC entities that I will need to update. Most action is slowly roaming around based on player movements/concentrations, and attacking close range players(you can probably guess the type of game im developing)

  • Keeping track of dirty blocks on a block device

    I'm looking for a way to keep track of what blocks on a block device are modified after a point in time. How I eventually want to use this for is to keep two 2TB disks in sync, one which only comes online (connected through USB) once a month. Without knowing what blocks have been modified, I have to go through the whole 2TB every time. I'm using a recent GNU/Linux OS and have C and Python experience. I'm hoping to avoid writing kernel level code as I don't have any experience in that area whatsoever. My current theory is that there should be some hooks somewhere where my code can get called when a disk flush is performed. Any ideas?
