  • One account, multiple users, multiple shopping cart in a web application

    I received a somewhat unusual request (imo) for a transactional web site. I have to implement the possibility of having multiple shopping cart for the same user. Those really are shopping carts, not order templates. I.E: A store with several departments ordering under the same account, but with a different person placing orders for a specific department only. Having more than one user per account is not an option since it would involve 'too much' management from the stores owner and the admins. Anyone had to deal with this before? The option so far is to have names for shopping cart, and a dropdown list or something alike after login to choose the cart with some kind of 'busy flag' to lock the cart if it's in use in another session.

  • Get Highest Res Favicon

    I'm making a website that needs to dynamically obtain the favicon of sites upon request. I've found a few api's that can accomplish this fairly well, and so far I'm liking http://www.fvicon.com/. The final image for my website will be 64x64px, and some websites such as Google and Wordpress have nice images of this size that are easily retrieved via this api. Though, of course, most websites only have a 16x16 favicon image and scaling that image to 64x64 has very bad quality loss. Examples: (high res) http://a.fvicon.com/wordpress.com?format=png&width=64&height=64 (low res) http://a.fvicon.com/yahoo.com?format=png&width=64&height=64 Keeping this in mind, I'm planning on somehow determining whether a high-res image is available and, if so, the website will use this image. If not, I want to use a pre-made 64x64 icon with the smaller icon layered over it. What I'm having trouble with is determining if there is a high res favicon available or not. Also, I'm curious if there's a better approach to this situation. I'd rather not use smaller images (64x64 works out really well for this project). The lowest res I'm willing to drop to is 48x48 but even then there will be a significant quality loss for scaling up 16x16 favicons. Any ideas?   • Generic applet style system for publishing mathematics demonstrations?

    Anyone who's tried to study mathematics using online resources will have come across these Java applets that demonstrate a particular mathematical idea. Examples: http://www.math.ucla.edu/~tao/java/Mobius.html http://www.mathcs.org/java/programs/FFT/index.html I love the idea of this interactive approach because I believe it is very helpful in conveying mathematical principles. I'd like to create a system for visually designing and publishing these 'mathlets' such that they can be created by teachers with little programming experience. So in order to create this app, i'll need a GUI and a 'math engine'. I'll probably be working with .NET because thats what I know best and i'd like to start experimenting with F#. Silverlight appeals to me as a presentation framework for this project (im not worried about interoperability right now). So my questions are: does anything like this exist already in full form? are there any GUI frameworks for displaying mathematical objects such as graphs & equations? are there decent open source libraries that exposes a mathematical framework (Math.NET looks good, just wondering if there is anything else out there) is there any existing work on taking mathematical models/demos built with maple/matlab/octave/mathematica etc and publishing them to the web?

  • Searching for the right pattern to handle login data

    Hi all, I'm working on a controller that handles logins for a Web app. These logins will come from multiple clients but will all contain the same data. However, depending on the client, this data will be interpreted into common entities for our webapp differently. For instance, we have a user code that gets sent in, and in one case we may use the first four digits of the code, and in another case 12 digits of the code to map to a field on a User entity. Instead of handling this all in the controller and having big nasty if blocks of logic, I would like to use a pattern to handle how this information gets ingested into our application. What are your opinions?

  • Getting the responseText from XMLHttpRequest-Object

    I wrote a cgi-script with c++ to return the query-string back to the requesting ajax object. I also write the query-string in a file in order to see if the cgi script works correctly. Is there an existing free library or framework which simplifies things like this in a webapplication setting? Features would also involve basic video playback functionality as well as time-driven meta-data and the ability to extract images from individual video frames. Are there existing open-source web-based tools for video manipulation other than building your own custom Flash app?

    I would like to create a web app similar to Stack Overflow in that the users will have different "point" levels and that their capabilities within the web app will be different based upon their point level. Question: How can this best be implemented? How can it be implemented in a way that is un-hackable (i.e. accessing capabilities that should not be available)? I figure there are two ways to do this: server-side and client-side. For the server-side solution, for each page request you check who the user is and have the CGI rewrite the page so that the client only gets a web page with the intended capabilities. For the client-side solution, the server gives the client the fully capable app and it is the client's job to check the point level and to handicap the app appropriately. It seems like the client-side solution would be easier on the server, (which is really important for my app), but more susceptible to someone hacking and using capabilities unwarranted by their point level.

  • Redirecting users in JSP from within a includes - java syntax error

    Hey everyone, So my setup for my web application is that I have a general header and footer and then I just include them in all my other pages so that all the common elements for all the pages are in a single page. The only problem I'm running into is when I want to redirect the user back to a login page if the "username" session has not already been created. The problem that I"m running into is that I have an if statement at the top of my header.jsp and then I have the else in the footer.jsp and it is giving me a java syntax error. Any ideas?     There is a strong tendency of making web apps and even seems that very soon a lot of features will be available online so that for every day use people will have all necessary software free online and they will not need to install any software locally. Only specific (professional) tools that usually people don’t use at home will not be available as a web app. So my question, how do you imagine selling software that was necessary for everyday use and was not free (seems they can't make money any more by selling their product – no need of those products). And what disadvantages have web apps, that is to say, what is bad to use software online compared with having the same software locally (please list)? Please do not consider this question not connected with programming, as I really would like to have a little statistics from professional programmers who are aware from nowday’s tendency of software and programming.     I'm trying to write a web-app that records WAV files (eg: from the user's microphone). I know Javascript alone can not do this, but I'm interested in the least proprietary method to augment my Javascript with. My targeted browsers are Firefox for PC and Mac (so no ActiveX). Please share your experiences with this. I gather it can be done with Flash (but not as a WAV formated file). I gather it can be done with Java (but not without code-signing). Are these the only options? @dominic-mazzoni I'd like to record the file as a WAV because because the purpose of the webapp will be to assemble a library of good quality short soundbites. I estimate upload will be 50 MB, which is well worth it for the quality. The app will only be used on our intranet.     Ideally something as intuitive as basecamp, with good usability and accessibility. The best I've seen is huddle.net but it's still weak in several areas. Must have: Projects - ability to add people & tasks and schedule tasks to people Calendar - showing when people are busy or available Role based access - Admins and non-admins History - ability to look back at all history Anyone seen a product that's worth a look? Clarification: Must be hosted i.e. not require my own hardware or IT staff I'm looking for an app to schedule people with specific tasks at specific times and monitor the outcomes. I'm already using Mingle (for stories), Basecamp (to run the business) and Exceptional (to track bugs). I'm not looking for a bug-tracking system or a story management application (I already looked at VersionOne, but chose Mingle due to it's nicer UI) My response to the answer being auto-selected: I still don't feel the answer (chosen for me) is the correct one. It's a useful list but little more, and doesn't provide the solution I was seeking.
