  Apple's Java for OS X 2012-006 update uninstalled the Apple-provide Java applet plug-in from all Mac web browsers. Mac OS X users running Java-based applications are instructed to download the latest version of the Java 7 applet plug-in from Oracle. For more information about Oracle's Java 7 for Mac, see: Mac Java 7 FAQ: Install, Remove, Revert, Configure, Sys Req (Java.com) We're currently certifying Oracle E-Business Suite with Mac desktops running Java 7. We have identified some compatibility issues and are working with the Java team on fixes right now. • Protecting design ideas from being copied by other websites?

  Hi everyone, I'm planning a project at the moment, while building a completely different project at the same time. Both of these projects are quite innovative in the way they either work or the way they are presented. One of the projects hasn't been done before, and the other is being made has competition, but I feel the competitions websites are light years behind what I'm doing. Is there a way for me to prevent the way my sites work or presented from being stolen? I've thought of patenting parts of them, but it requires £10,000 and I don't have that amount of money. Also, would me putting a Copyright notice on the site or an All Rights Reserved tag give me any muscle when going to websites that I feel have stolen my ideas (if they have)? Cheers!

  Are there any tools available for the following use case: I am planning to write a complex application and now I just know about the basic functional requirments. I am refining the functionality with more and more details. I am also writing down how to implement this in software architecture perspective. I am in a situation where there are multiple ways implement a certain functionality and based on the selected approach, other parts of the program will also change. At this moment, I don't want to decide on the approach to use, I just want to list down all the options, present to a wider audience and get it finalized.   I'm planning on leaving my current job because we're locked into using Blub, with an enterprise Blub framework and a Blub-level web server, on mediocre shared hosting. My coworkers are friendly and my boss is an average small business owner - I want to leave entirely because of the technical reasons. I feel like being soaked in Blub is bad for my brain and making me a worse programmer. When I leave, how can I explain this to my boss and coworkers?   We are planning to build a Web Based School/College ERP. The main problem we face is Hardware support. Since it is Web Based, it is not possible to implement Biometrics. But most of our clients do ask for Biometrics. I hope we need to use a desktop application to do that. Can you please give some suggestions for this? Another thing is, here we don't have stable internet connection. We frequently face disconnection. This is another problem for Web Based CRM. In HTML5 there is a feature called Offline storage. Is it possible to use this feature for such dynamic ERP? For example, let's say we need to enter marks for the students. Net got disconnected. Is it possible to use HTML5 offline feature to save the marks offline and upload them when we got connection back?

  We are planning to develop a JavaScript API to expose some of our J2EE based services. We are doing this keeping Google Maps API in mind. Can someone please suggested where we should start and the approaches that we need to follow to create a useful and extensible JavaScript API? These are the things that we are considering to achieve. It should be very simple for others to use our API. We feel Google Maps API is like that. We should be able to release the updates of the APIs without affecting the existing implementations. • TDD, new tests while old ones not implemented yet

  I am experimenting with test-driven development, and I found that I often come to a following situation: I write tests for some functionality X. Those tests fail. While trying to implement X, I see that I need to implement some feature Y in a lower layer of my code. So... I write tests for Y. Now both tests for X and Y fail. Once I had 4 features in different layers of code being worked on at the same time, and I was losing my focus on what I am actually doing (too many tests failing at the same time). I think I could solve this by putting more effort into planning my tasks even before I start writing tests. But in some cases I didn't know that I will need to go deeper, because e.g. I didn't know the API of lower layer very well. What should I do in such cases? Does TDD have any recommendations?

• Change guest username

  Now, looking around on Google shows me some ways in which to customise the settings of the Guest session. But, I would love a way to change the name of the Guest account. Basically, I'm planning to take some laptops out to a school in Africa and want to rename the "Guest" account in 14.04 to "Student" so the students use that. They tend to store stuff on USB sticks and they're using the Guest account so they can't break anything. EDIT: I'll expand on this slightly. They're using the guest account simply for the reason it doesn't save anything after logoff. This was a specific thing the teachers have asked for. I don't mind if the actual username remains guest behind the scenes, but as long as it shows up as Student to on Unity. Any way of going about this?

• C# Rendering Engine for Roguelike [closed]

  I'm trying my hand at designing a roguelike, and I need a pretty simple 2D rendering engine that works with C# Its as simple as it gets, I want to be able to drop sprites somewhere on a grid, with some sort of menus/text on the side; that sort of thing. The (very complicated) game itself would be decoupled from the interface I've looked into a number of engines and they all seem to be very complicated/support much more things than I need. Right now I'm planning on making my own using either XNA or OpenTK - but I was wondering whether anyone has any suggestions for less-complicated rendering engines which might make my job easier. • Are C or C++ The Only Viable Languages for a GC

  Background I have just finished writing a compiler for a functional language compiling to the JVM as a learning project. However, since I'm just doing this to learn, I thought it might be interesting to write a native backend and a RTS for it. As I've been planning out what this new backend will look like, the one point I'm stumbling on is the garbage collector. I've implemented the compiler in Haskell. But I have no desire to write the GC in Haskell since, while it may be possible, it'd suck. Question I've looked at several FOSS garbage collectors prior to posting and most of them were implemented in good old ANSI C. Is this still the most accepted choice for writing a GC nowadays? I've seen that this site tends to frown upon questions with multiple answers so I hope this will make it more specific: If some startup was writing a professional grade gc today, are the only viable choice for them C or C++? It's my first question here so please comment and let me know if this question is ill-suited for for programmers.

  I'm planning to write/code one such stealth keylogger that would bypass detection by a certain antivirus. (I don't want to name the vendor as I know how good Google queries are against StackExchange websites). I don't want to just download any keylogger from internet and try to encode it to evade detection. Writing code myself I would have the ability to make changes as I go; obscuration on both high-level and low-level language. I like control too. It seems naive but is it true that keyloggers are a thing of the past, probably because of how effective AV's have become in detecting such programs? I want some nice points on how can one easily write a robust, effective key logger preferably for a Windows environment?

• How often should saving to disk occur in an automatically saving text editor?

  I am developing a simple text editor and would like the application to save the text automatically. In other words, the user would never have to press a save button. I have seen other applications that do this, and was wondering how often is it safe to write files to disk? From a user experience standpoint, it seems that the more frequently this happens the better, but I am worried about performance and possible disk wear (especially on writes to SSDs). It seems like the operating system disk caching might help avoid these problems, but I also don't know if its safe to rely on that for an application like this. I was planning on writing the whole document to disk at each save, but this just seems terribly inefficient if the OS ends up writing it to disk to frequently, but relying on program unload may lose data in the case of a crash. Does anyone have any experience dealing with this that might be able to help?

  I want to upgrade my machine with a new Motherboard, RAM and Processor. I am planning on doing a clean install of Ubuntu 12.04. The Motherboard I want to use is an Asrock 970 Extreme4 which uses an AMI 32 MBit UEFI BIOS. My Question is, is there anything I have to watch out for during the installation process? Cause I have read that some people have trouble booting into ubuntu using a UEFI BIOS. Any advice? I don't want to spend all that money for the different parts only to find out that I can only use windows properly. Thanks in advance

  I am planning on creating a massive multiplayer world and I am wondering where to start. I am quite inexperienced in the field of Java but I have researched into it and learned that it is perhaps my best bet in creating this project is Java for the fact that it has a much easier learning curve than C++ to beginners and still capable of holding massive amounts of players at a time.
