ASP.NET problem - Firebug shows odd behaviour

I have an ASP.NET application that does a large database read. It loads up a gridview inside an update panel. In VS2008, just running on my local machine, it runs fantastically. In production (identical code, just published and put on one of our network servers), it runs slow as dirt. Debug is set to false, so this is not the cause of the slow down. I'm not an experienced web developer, so besides that, feel free to suggest the obvious. I have been using Firebug to determine what's going on, and here is what that has turned up: On production, there are around 500 requests. The timeline bar is very short. The size column varies from run to run, but is always the same for the duration of the run. Locally, there are about 30 requests. The timeline bar takes up the entire space. Can anyone shed some light on why this is happening and what I can do to fix it? Also, I can't find much of anything on the web about this, so any references are helpful too.

Tree iterator, can you optimize this any further?

As a follow up to my original question about a small piece of this code I decided to ask a follow up to see if you can do better then what we came up with so far. The code below iterates over a binary tree (left/right = child/next ). I do believe there is room for one less conditional in here (the down boolean). The fastest answer wins! The cnt statement can be multiple statements so lets make sure this appears only once The child() and next() member functions are about 30x as slow as the hasChild() and hasNext() operations. Keep it iterative <-- dropped this requirement as the recursive solution presented was faster. This is C++ code visit order of the nodes must stay as they are in the example below. ( hit parents first then the children then the 'next' nodes). BaseNodePtr is a boost::shared_ptr as thus assignments are slow, avoid any temporary BaseNodePtr variables. Good Hosting Providers With Zend Framework Support

I currently use ixwebhosting for my hosting services. They're cheap and work (most of the time). The databases are horribly slow, the servers are horribly slow, and their support (though usually prompt) is tough to deal with. That being said, they're cheap, I've got like 20 domains hosted in my account, none of them are high volume, and they work JUST good enough- until today. This isn't meant to be a condemnation of ixwh though. Their prices are very low for what they do offer and most things work just fine, most of the time. I need to be able to host web apps written with Zend Framework in a fairly easy fashion. The server performance can't be worse than what I've already had (a pretty low hurdle to clear), and I don't want to spend $30/mo. These are not money making websites- they're projects. My requirements are PHP 5.3, ZF support, MySQL databases, multiple domains- not much. Who should I look at, and who should I look out for? Also- I put this on SO instead of SF because of the Zend Framework specific requirement. If I'm wrong, do as you wish.

JQuery to PHP function and back Ajaxed

Hi all, i have a set of php function that i want to call on different events mostly onclick with jquery async (ajax). So when that function finishes i get an array which contains IDs and Names. I echo the names but i want the ID for reference so when i click on the echoed name i can call an other php function with parameter the ID of the name... How do i get rid of the switch statement?? How do i call properly php functions and pass params to it??? How can i save this IDs so when i click on an item with that id an other php function is called?? Plz feel free to ask any question, any answer is welcome :)

Building simple jQuery plugin, need assistance

I know this is because my mask mask and topImg options have the same class - but how can I modify the plugin to allow for these items to have the same class? IE7 & IE8 error executing function with ajax

I am loading an ajax page which executes an HTML5 video player script. I need to display a banner that sticks to the bottom of the browser. How ever, when user navigates to next page, the banner shows up again. What can I do to set the banner to remained hidden just for this visit? In other words, as long as the browser remained open, the banner will not show up again. But if user returns to the same website another time, the banner should load again. Dealing with image upload on server

I have got a the following problem: I have got multi-step form where in one step user upload image to server and then few steps further supplies other information, when this information is invalid no data should be commited - also the image should be deleted. I was thinking about PHP session, but I've read here PHP - Store Images in SESSION data? that it is inefficient way. Every time you proceed step in the form the image is reloaded (in the session) and as somebody mentioned "You will want it to only be as big as it needs to be and you need to delete it as soon as you don't need it because large pieces of information in the session will slow down the session startup." - here i got a question: will it slow down the stratup the session of user who upload file or sessions of all users? I have to mention that I'm looking for solution that doesn't rely on operating system scripts (cron or etc) - I have no permission to run such scripts. The perfect solution for me would be: saving image on disk (for example in some folder named after session id) then after the latest step of form move this image or delete depending on form validation. If user unexpectedly destroy the session (for example closing the browser) of course the folder with image should be deleted. In nutshell I need somethig like callback to event "destroying session".

How to detect .NET WPF memory leak or GC long run?

I have the next very strange situation and problem: .NET 4.0 application for diagram editing (WPF). Runs ok in my PC: 8GM RAM, 3.0GHz, i7 quad-core. While creating objects (mostly diagram nodes and connectors, plus all the undo/redo information) the TaskManager show, as expected, some memory usage "jumps" (up and down). These mem-usage "jumps" also remains executing AFTER user interaction ended. Maybe this is the GC cleaning/regorganizing memory? To see what is going on, I've used the Ants mem profiler, but somewhat it prevents those "jumps" to happen after user interaction. PROBLEM: It Freezes/Hangs after seconds or minutes of usage in some slow/weak laptos/netbooks of my beta testers (under 2GHz of speed and under 2GB of RAM). I was thinking of a memory leak, but... EDIT: Also, there is the case that the memory usage grows and grows until collapse (only in slow machines). In a Windows XP Mode machine (VM in Win 7) with only 512MB of RAM Assigned it works fine without mem-usage "jumps" after user interaction (no GC cleaning?!). So, I really have a big trouble because I cannot reproduce the error, only see these strange behaviour (mem jumps), and the tool supposed to show me what is happening is hiding the problem (like the "observer's paradox"). Any ideas on what's happening and how to solve it?

I am doing a webservice in phonegap.Here the application fetch values from a xml file in remote server when user search particular keyword and load the content to a div in my application.Here my problem is I want to show toast message like "loading..." or "progressing..." till the content is loaded into the div of application.I have created a toast message.But I dont know how to hide the toast message after the content is loaded since the time for fetching values from xml file is different for different keywords. How can I quickly parse large (>10GB) files?

Hi - I have to process text files 10-20GB in size of the format: field1 field2 field3 field4 field5 I would like to parse the data from each line of field2 into one of several files; the file this gets pushed into is determined line-by-line by the value in field4. There are 25 different possible values in field2 and hence 25 different files the data can get parsed into. I have tried using Perl (slow) and awk (faster but still slow) - does anyone have any suggestions or pointers toward alternative approaches? FYI here is the awk code I was trying to use; note I had to revert to going through the large file 25 times because I wasn't able to keep 25 files open at once in awk: chromosomes=(1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25) for chr in ${chromosomes[@]} do awk < my_in_file_here -v pat="$chr" '{if ($4 == pat) for (i = $2; i <= $2+52; i++) print i}' >> my_out_file_"$chr".query done

Socket Performance C++ Or C#

I have to write an application that is essentially a proxy server to handle all HTTP and HTTPS requests from our server (web browsing, etc). I know very little C++ and am very comfortable writing the application features in C#. I have experimented with the proxy from Mentalis (socket proxy) which seems to work fine for small webpages but if I go to large sites like tigerdirect.ca and browse through a couple of layers it is very slow and sometimes requests don't complete and I see broken images and javascript errors. This happens with all of our vendor sites and other content heavy sites. Mentalis uses HTTP 1.0 which I know is not as efficient but should a proxy be that slow? What is an acceptable amount of performance loss from using a proxy? Would HTTP 1.1 make a noticeable difference? Would a C++ proxy be much faster than one in C#? Is the Mentalis code just not efficient? Would I be able to use a premade C++ proxy and import the DLL to C# and still get good performance or would this project call for all C++? Sorry if these are obvious questions but I have not done network programming before.

odd behavior when checking if radio button selected in jQuery

I did some debugging and finally realized that it was returning an id of "approved_status". Elsewhere on my form I have a checkbox called "approved_status". I realized that when I originally tested this, I must have testing it on records where approved_status is false. And, now most of my approved_statuses are true/checked. I changed the code to this: var id = $("input:radio[@name='companyType']:checked").attr('id'); alert(id); if (id == "primary") { And it's now properly returning "primary" or "secondary" as the id. So, it is working, but it seems that it's not checking the name at all and now just checking radio buttons. I just want to know for future use, what's wrong with the original code b/c I can see possibly having 2 different radio sets on a page and then my new fix probably wouldn't work. Thanks!

Need Help on JavaScript to Trim

I am facing some problems with my server space. The images are using all the space from the server, making it slow. As it is an eCommerce website, it cannot be slow or we lose customers. Utility to indexing a directory?

Here is what I am trying to do: I have a directory (with sub-directories) with source files, I need to index them so I can find files fast (find as I type) so I can open them for compare/analysis. I don't want it to scan the content, just filename index for quick lookup. I do this when trying to determine if a class exists in a given tree (we maintain directory trees for each release which has a lot of files) and sometimes I want to quickly check files to see how something was implemented, etc. Most of these directories are on remote servers (sometimes on the other side of the world) or on a VM (which is on a server far away), so I only want to read the directory trees once, which is why running find every time is way too slow and doing 'find . foo.txt' and then searching that is a bit tedious. It's kind of like how "Find Resource" works in eclipse after it indexes all files, but it's a bit of a chore to import/remove directories into eclipse every time. Eclipse is also very slow when dealing with remote volumes. Any suggestions are appreciated :)

Combine MD5 hashes of multiple files

I have 7 files that I'm generating MD5 hashes for. The hashes are used to ensure that a remote copy of the data store is identical to the local copy. Unfortunately, the link between these two copies of the data is mind numbingly slow. Changes to the data are very rare but I have a requirement that the data be synchronized at all times (or as soon as possible). Rather than passing 7 different MD5 hashes across my (extremely slow) communications link, I'd like to generate the hash for each file and then combine these hashes into a single hash which I can then transfer and then re-calculate/use for comparison on the remote side. If the "combined hash" differs, then I'd start sending the 7 individual hashes to determine exactly which file(s) have been changed. For example, here are the MD5 hashes for the 7 files as of last week: 0709d609d69385255c496436eb50402c 709465a74411bd596595c7b9b158ae6a 4ab657320ef33e3d5eb498e4c13d41b7 3b49c6ab199994fd776bb63761414e72 0fc28c5a010fc3c06c0c930c88e31a15 c4ecd214662cac5aae0e53f6f252bf0e 8b086431e43148a2c2d943ba30d31cc6 I'd like to combine these hashes together such that I get a single unique value (perhaps another MD5 hash?) that I can then send to the remote system. On the remote system, I'd then perform the same calculation to determine if the data as a whole has been changed. If it has, then I'd start sending the individual hashes, etc. The most important factor is that my "combined hash" be short enough so that it uses less bandwidth than just sending all 7 hashes in the first place. I thought of writing the 7 MD5 hashes to a file and then hashing that file but is there a better way?

Vacancy Tracking Algorithm implementation in C++

I'm trying to use the vacancy tracking algorithm to perform transposition of multidimensional arrays in C++. The arrays come as void pointers so I'm using address manipulation to perform the copies. Basically, there is an algorithm that starts with an offset and works its way through the whole 1-d representation of the array like swiss cheese, knocking out other offsets until it gets back to the original one. Then, you have to start at the next, untouched offset and do it again. You repeat until all offsets have been touched. Right now, I'm using a std::set to just fill up all possible offsets (0 up to the multiplicative fold of the dimensions of the array). Then, as I go through the algorithm, I erase from the set. I figure this would be fastest because I need to randomly access offsets in the tree/set and delete them. Then I need to quickly find the next untouched/undeleted offset. First of all, filling up the set is very slow and it seems like there must be a better way. It's individually calling new[] for every insert. So if I have 5 million offsets, there's 5 million news, plus re-balancing the tree constantly which as you know is not fast for a pre-sorted list. Second, deleting is slow as well. Third, assuming 4-byte data types like int and float, I'm using up actually the same amount of memory as the array itself to store this list of untouched offsets. Fourth, determining if there are any untouched offsets and getting one of them is fast -- a good thing. Does anyone have suggestions for any of these issues?

JQuery ajax success help

Hi all, I am implementing a "Quick delete" function into a page I am creating. The way it works is like this: 1: You click the "delete" button in the table row for the record that you want to delete. 2: The page sends a request to the ajax page and return a successfully message of "yes" or a failure message of "no". My issue is that if I get a successful message of "yes" I want to hide the row for that record. I am having issue "finding" the row using JQuery. My standard approach would be to use a 3D-array: values[x][y][z] = 1; // test value but this turns out to be slow: it takes 192 ms to complete this loop, where a single int-assignment int value = 1; // test value takes only 66 ms. 1) Why is an array so relatively slow? 2) And why does it get even slower when I put this in the inner loop: values[z][y][x] = 1; // (notice x and z switched) This takes more than 4 seconds! 3) Most importantly: Can I use a data structure that is as quick as the assignment of a single integer, but can store as much data as the 3D-array?

jquery 2 fades complete at the same time

Hello again, just another quick one: I am noticing differences with fadeOut dependant on whether this is a target. Here's my structure. I have rows of data on my page, and each row has two icons. One is an update icon for that row, one is a delete icon for that row. When a user clicks the update icon for a particular row, I want both the update and the delete icons to fade away. So, in order to fade the thing the user clicked (the update button) and its corresponding delete button, I am using... $(this).next().add(this).fadeOut('slow'); ...which works, but the two elements don't fade at the same time. this fades first (which is the update icon), and then this.next fades out (the delete icon). But if I specify the two elements by name... $('#updS2, #delS2').fadeOut('slow'); then they fade together. Why is it different? Apologies for Friday rambling.
