• Trying to find a good strategy using Git for personal development on local/personal machine

  A noob here. I have a personal Macbook and I want to use Git to track the changes etc. I want to just init a repo on my macbook and work there. Is this a good idea? What if: I have a main repo somewhere in my Macbook HD, like, /Users/user/projects/project1 and clone it to another area on my macbook where I actually perform development? But there is a lot of redundancy in this. I am a little confused and want to know what are the usual steps folks take in a similar personal development environment. Thanks a lot.

  I'm new to rails and have volunteered to help out the local High School Track team with a simple database that tracks the runners performances. For the moment, I have three models: Runners, Race_Data and Races. I have the following associations. Runners have_many Race_Data Races have_many Race_Data I also want create the association Runners Have_Many Races Through Race_Data, but as my look at the diagram I have drawn, there is already a many to one relationship from Race_data to Races. Does the combination of Runners having many Race_Data and Race_Data having one Race imply a Many_to_Many relationship between Runners and Races?

• How do you backup your localhost ?

  i have method to backup my work on localhost based on week basis. i use multipe dos command and save in on a bat file. i use command such as copy and xcopy and save my localhost to another place. After my server grow larger, i think it take too much space. So tehre is a way to solve this problem ? maybe a software that can track changes on our php code. EDIT : I use windows xp sp2, on XAMPP Apache PHP 5.2.1 the localhost refer to my laptop. i install the localhost server here

  Hi, Is it possible to cover my controller, that is highly depeinding on Etags with unit tests? Here's what i'm trying to do: in case if page is not stale (meaning that it's fresh), i'm adding some header to response. When i'm trying to test it all (rspec), no matter how many similar requests i have, i still receive 200 OK instead of 304, and my header doesn't get modified. Furthermore, if i track request.fresh?(response), it's ALWAYS false. However, it perfectly works in browser. I've already tried to state ActionController::Base.perform_caching = true, it doesn't change the overall situation. Thank you

• Saving selected rows in a jqGrid while paging

  I have a jqGrid with which users will select records. A large number of records could be selected across multiple pages. The selected rows seem to get cleared out when the user pages through the data. Is it up to the developer to manually track the selected rows in an array? I'm fine doing this, but I'm not sure what the best way is. I'm not sure I want to be splicing an array whenever any number of records are selected as that seems like it could really slow things down. My end goal is to have a jQueryUI dialog that, when closed, while store all the selected rows so I can post it to the server. Insight, questions, comments; all are appreciated! Note: added aspnetmvc tag only because this is for an MVC app

• Sound Effects/Manipulation?

  Hello, I am creating an android app that basically records an applies an "Effect" on the audio track then plays it back. I got my app to record an play back but I am stuck an not sure where do go from here. I have been Googling for days now trying to find a open source audio library or some way to change the audio after I record it. I currently have it setup to play back using SoundPool an I't lets me speed up an slow down the audio.   So we had real FLV video file. we had devided it into 3 parts (more or less equal, not looking into structure orcontext). We have taken second part and forgot about first 2. Video contained audio and video track. mp3 and on vp6. Is it any how possible to play thsat second part after sending to ffmpeg some command? So how to (using any FFMPEG API (in general in any programming language) or using command line) turn bytearray into playable video? (knowing what format video was created in and some other data like used codecs )

  Hi Guys, In my iphone app, i need to project 3d scene into the 2D coordinates of the screen for some calculations. My objects go through various rotations, translations and scaling. So i figured i need to multiply the vertices with ModelView matrix first, then i need to multiply it with the Orthogonal projection matrix. First of all am on the right track? I have the Model View Matrix, but need the projection matrix. Is there a glorthof equivalent in ES 2.0? PS: i am new to opengl. Thanks for your help. Zippo

• C# Conditional Operator Not a Statement?

  I have a simple little code fragment that is frustrating me: HashSet<long> groupUIDs = new HashSet<long>(); groupUIDs.Add(uid)? unique++ : dupes++; At compile time, it generates the error: Only assignment, call, increment, decrement, and new object expressions can be used as a statement HashSet.Add is documented to return a bool, so the ternary (?) operator should work, and this looks like a completely legitimate way to track the number of unique and duplicate items I add to a hash-set. When I reformat it as a if-then-else, it works fine. Can anyone explain the error, and if there is a way to do this as a simple ternary operator?

• Mercurial hg clone error - "abort: error: Name or service not known"

  I have installed the latest hg package available for Fedora Linux. However, hg clone reports an error. hg clone http://localmachine001:8000/ repository reports: "abort: error: Name or service not known" localmachine001 is a computer within the local network. I can ping it from my Linux box without any problems. I can also use the same http address and browse the existing code. However, hg clone does not work. If I execute the same command from my Macintosh machine, I can easily clone the repository. Some Internet resources recommend editing .hgrc file, and adding proxy to it: [http_proxy] host=proxy:8080 I have tried that without any success. Also, I assume that proxy is not needed in this case, since the hg server machine is in my local network. Can anyone recommend me what should I do, or how could I track the problem?   I am trying to make an asp.net website using Visual web dev and C# that accesses data in an SQL database. For my site, I need to be able to save and access additional user properties such as age and gender. I have been playing around with the built in .NET Login tools but I don't understand how to keep track of the additional properties (age, gender...) I could store all the users information in my own database but how do I correlate the users data in my DB to the usernames in the member database that is automatically created?

• Any good card game AI strategies?

  What would be strategies for writing a good computer opponent for a card game? Most card games are games of incomplete information, so simply mapping out and traversing the game tree as one could do with a board game does not seem too promising. Maybe one could track what open cards are in the game (as soon as they are revealed) and assign probabilities to certain events (e.g. opponent still has 2 cards of clubs). Does anyone have experience with this? Links and directions greatly appreciated. Thanks! -Mark

  Hi I'm receiving the following error on my shared hosting box: SQLSTATE[HY000]: General error: 5 Out of memory (Needed 4194092 bytes) This error is only triggered on a specific page. I guess this indicates that I am reaching the upper limit of the 64MB allocated to me in my current MySQL environment. Does this mean that a single query is going over (returning) 64MB of data? If so, i guess i can just track down and tune that specific query? Or isnt that the correct approach? Thanks Jon

  Lets say I was to develop a small forum script, what types of topics pages would you find most helpful? I'd like to get an idea of what should be added. Viewing popular phpBB forums, they offer "Unanswered Posts", "Active Topics" and "Unread Topics". Obviously I'm already including a page to view your own topics and posts. My other question was, is it a big deal that I'm not tracking whether or not you've read a topic? I already provide the page showing all topics you've participated in... just not ones that you've "viewed". Would this be something forum users would only end up complaining about? I don't like the options available to track topics that are read/not read, that's the only reason I am not considering adding this feature at this stage. Many thanks everyone for any help.

  Hi, Is there an API where I can search for a song, and then stream the preview of the song on my site? Looked into Amazon MP3, but I can't seem to find an API for Amazon MP3. Also looked into last.fm Track.Search api, but seems like the return value doesn't seem to give the actual filename. (i.e mp3 etc), which means I can't stream it on my site. • Tips for resolving Hibernate/JPA EntityNotFoundException

  I'm running into a problem with Hibernate where when trying to delete a group of Entities I encounter the following error: javax.persistence.EntityNotFoundException: deleted entity passed to persist: [com.locuslive.odyssey.entity.FreightInvoiceLine#<null>] These are not normally so difficult to track down as they are usually caused by an entity being deleted but not being removed from a Collection that it is a member of. In this case I have removed the entity from every list that I can think of (it's a complex datamodel). I've put JBoss logging into Trace and I can see the collections that are being cascaded. However I can't seem to find the Collection containing the entity that I'm deleting. Does anyone have any tips for resolving this particular Exception? Thanks.

• phantom error "error parsing XML: unbound prefix"

  The error "error parsing XML: unbound prefix" shows up on my main layout: main.xml when I first open Eclipse. To make the error go away, all I have to do is make a modification to the file, then undo it, then hit save (have to make a change in order to be able to save file and thus trigger the new syntax check). My environment is: Fedora Eclipse Platform Version: 3.4.2 Based on build id: 20090211-1700 My target is Android API level 5. The first time I saw the error I spent a long time trying to track down "the problem" but later realized there isn't really a problem, it's just a phantom error. My concern is that if I log the exception in the library, there will be many duplicates (because the library layer will log it, the application layer will log it, and anything in between), but if I don't log it in the library, it'll be hard to track down bugs. Is there a best practices for this?

  Heyy Everybody! I am trying to create a memory management system, so that a user can call myMalloc, a method I created. I have a linked list keeping track of my free memory. My problem is when I am attempting to find the end of a free bit in my linked list. I am attempting to add the size of the memory free in that section (which is in the linked list) to the pointer to the front of the free space, like this. void *tailEnd = previousPlace->head_ptr + ((previousPlace->size+1)*(sizeof(int)); I was hoping that this would give me a pointer to the end of that segment. However, I keep getting the warning: "pointer of type 'void*' used in arithmetic" Is there a better way of doing this? Thanks!

  Hi, I have an "item", which goes through a multi-page creation process. Images are uploaded at step five, and I keep track of the steps by using the attribute "complete". When validating whether an image is attached with paperclip, I get problems using the code below: validates_attachment_presence :pic1, :if => Proc.new { |u| u.complete == "step5"} It seems that I can't access the "complete" attribute, as the active-record object seems to be the paperclip image. Is there a way for me to check at which point in the process I am and validate conditionally? Thanks, Michael

• Jquery JCarousel, itemLastInCallback how to change out the controls

  I am new to js and Jquery other than plug and play scripts and plugins. I have Jcarousel running great on a Ruby on Rails site and I need to use the itemLastInCallback method to change out the next and prev buttons. Basically if the end user clicks through to the last item in a carousel, the next button would become a link to the next carousel. <%= link_to (image_tag 'scroll_right.png'), @next_group % is the code I need to render in the end. So something like: if this is not the last item in the carousel button is normal jcarousel next button else <%= link_to (image_tag 'scroll_right.png'), @next_group % end is there a best way to do this? am I on the right track?

  Creating an activity tracking system for a social site. All user activiti from pooint of login til logoff are to be tracked. This means the first use case is the user's login. Every activity will have the same format so once I figure out how to track one activity then I can create chema for all activities. Currently for login I have steps like: Two solutions I have: Activity 1: User attempts to login Activity 2 A: User has successfully logged in Activity 2 B: User failed to login. Activity 2 B A: User failed to login due to invalid password Activity 2 B B: User failed to login due to locked account. OR Activty 1: User login - with result = Pass or Fail and if Fail reason = flag_id of reason. Accordingly I have to create the schema. For now I have it like this: activity_id object_id (fk) session_id (fk) user_id (fk) flag_id (fk) created_dt friend_id (fk) result (pass/fail) But ofcourse this a work in progress.

  Azure itself is imo PaaS and not IaaS. Do you agree? MS gurantees an availability of 99% and a strong consistency. Do they do backups? If Yes: How do they manage consistency? According to the Cap theorem (http://camelcase.blogspot.com/2007/08/cap-theorem.html ) their claims are not realistic. 2.1 Do you know detailed technical stuff about the how they are going to realize the claims about consistency and availability? On the MS page you'll find three SLAs .docs, one for SQL Azure, the second for Azure AppFabric/.Net Services and the third for Azure Compute&Storage.(Screenshot in 1.) How can one track whether SLAs are violated? Do they offer some sort of monitor, so I don't have to measure the uptime by myself?
