  • What web oriented language would work best with binary data?

    I want to create a service where people can upload files. However, since file storage costs money, I want to compress the files so they take less space. I would want to write my own compression algorithm, however, PHP doesn't have good ways to handle binary data (which is needed for many compression algorithms). So I wondered, what would be a better language to create such a website in? I have knowledge of PHP (and Javascript, HTML and CSS) but no experience with other things like Ruby, Perl, Python, and other web development languages.

  • Plug-in or framework recommendation for showing content preview fly-over in CMS

    The requirement is to have either front end plug-in or back end processor that generates the preview of contents (such as images, videos, PDF files, HTML pages) in a preview popup when user mouse hovers the content. I did some research on this, seems that there are assorted jquery plugins for each type of files, but what we are looking for is a framework that handles all types of file previews. Ideally, we want to generate preview images on the backend, considering the cost of retrieving content on front end. I did find some open source or proprietary CMS that provides this feature, but usually they are shipped as one suite and the API for file preview might not be open. Is there any java or jquery framework that handles file preview? Thanks a lot

  • How would I pursue a track in front-end web development?

    I've recently been put on heavy JavaScript projects and have become fond of the front-end world in comparison to the back-end. I have always been good at proper markup and CSS, and coupled with AJAX, pretty animations, and dynamically generated content, it's become a much more interesting and flashy world for me. I would like to be able to continue to hone my craft in the same way that I was able to become proficient at back-end development with PHP: getting paid to do it. How would I market myself as a front-end web developer with a strong interest in dynamic JavaScript-driven websites? Due to my strong background in back-end development, how would I find the companies that wouldn't waste my front-end skill set on simple HTML/CSS development? And as a bonus, how would I apply this to being a contractor/freelance developer rather than a salaried employee? While I like the idea of being able to remain a part of my creations, I also dislike the maintenance phase of projects.

  • How to I prevent decimal truncation in Word 2003 when a document is auto populated via a Web Service

    I have a document template which is being auto populated via an external web service. The incoming data exists as a currency (e.g. 3.10) but when it is passed into the Word Document template the variable is truncated to remove any trailing 0's. I need the number to always appear with 2 decimals, even if they are both 0's. This is with the 2003 version of Word, I have not tested with other versions since all of our document templates need to be generated using that version of Word. I feel like this can be done with a Macro or a VB script but I have a very small amount of time & no experience with these tools - Any help is greatly appreciated!

    For the first time I'm in the position where I'm helping interview potential front-end developers. (The other interviewer is more business & PM-focused, although he is a former developer.) I probe for knowledge and background in css, js, and other related technologies, but those questions are really just testing for lingo. I feel that it'd be unfair to ask very specific questions about css when we're not infront of a computer, because my style of programming css is a lot of guesswork. I've also been given websites that these web developers have written-- is that enough to go on for interviewing front-ends? We're also looking for general aptitude, rather than a databank of knowledge.

  • Fitting an established site into a CI framework

    I manage a rather large, feature full nightmare of a site which has no end of feature creep settings/options/etc. Up to now its been coded in a procedural/functional way and would like to move to an OO,MVC setup. I'm quite new to it all but have done alot of research and feel that CodeIgniter is a code choice of framework to use to help quicken the transfer. Before looking at a framework, I started constructing a list of objects to create classes out of: photos users forum topics forums blogs blog posts comments The trouble I have now, is I do understand where these generic/universal objects fall into the CI MVC setup. What is the best way to organise this kind of stuff? These classes can generally be used on multiple models/views/controllers.

    A bit of a revelation this evening. I discovered something obvious, but missing from my understanding of the brilliant iOS example that ships with the Sync. Framework 4.0CTP It seems that on the server side if a record is edited, correctly only the fields that are modified gets sent down to your device (in my case an iPad). I was previously just blindly assuming that I'd get all fields down.   • A solution for a PHP website without a framework

    One of our customers asked us to add some dynamic functionality to an existent website, made of several static HTML pages. We normally work with an MVC framework (mostly CodeIgniter), but in this case moving everything to a framework would require too much time. Since it is not a big project, not having the full functionality of a framework is not a problem. But the question is how to keep code clean. The solution I came up with is to divide code in libraries (the application's API) and models. So inside HTML there will only be API calls, and readability will not be sacrificed. I, as a java web applications developer, am think about possible alternatives. Many seem to have gotten rid of java, so I would not like to develop for an environmet, that users do not have on their computers, and that they are not willing to install for security reasons.     Our client asked to implement a system with web technologies and the basic functionalities of: We have 3 users: Admin, User, Visitor. provide videos with an indexing system. Videos and other info about them are uploaded from an admin panel. Users can make playlists, add extra info to videos etc. Visitors watch playlists, videos, track their progress etc. This are some of the very basic functionalities of the system, just to get an idea. So we agreed it's a saas project and we started with php,symphony,jquery,requireJS etc. Now our client says that he wants the user and visitor part has to be accessible offline only. He says the user can download the videos and software, and continue offline. What are your suggestions on this? Provide the ability for the user to download a local server, or another way?
