  • How to have a PHP web site that can play videos offline?

    Our client asked to implement a system with web technologies and the basic functionalities of: We have 3 users: Admin, User, Visitor. provide videos with an indexing system. Videos and other info about them are uploaded from an admin panel. Users can make playlists, add extra info to videos etc. Visitors watch playlists, videos, track their progress etc. This are some of the very basic functionalities of the system, just to get an idea. So we agreed it's a saas project and we started with php,symphony,jquery,requireJS etc. Now our client says that he wants the user and visitor part has to be accessible offline only. He says the user can download the videos and software, and continue offline. What are your suggestions on this? Provide the ability for the user to download a local server, or another way?

    I've worked with SharePoint for some time now, and I like to think that I know all there is to know about it.  Deep down I know that's not true, but it's a fun delusion.  However, I found out yesterday that there is a mechanism in SharePoint called the Scenario Framework that has been around for a while but that I had no idea ever existed.  It is used to maintain state between multi-page web forms and helps manage the navigation between those pages.  If building out multiple-page forms in SharePoint is in your plans, you can find more information about the Scenario Framework on Waldek Mastykarz blog entry on the subject.

  • Alternatives to Google Sites for a personal web site?

    I'd like to find a hosting solution for my personal, fairly low-traffic, web site. I think Google Sites would suit me perfectly, but I've heard horror stories about Google's algorithms shutting down all your accounts on a whim, with no right of appeal, so I'm naturally worried, because I don't want to lose my Gmail. Edit I'm talking about cases like this one: I tried contacting somebody at Google support ("Surely they should have a support department, right?" Nope, wrong!) (The victim managed to regain access to his Gmail account when his case went "viral", but he never got an explanation as to why he had been locked out in the first place) Are there good, preferably free, alternatives to Google Sites and what are their PROs and CONs? One requirement is that I should be able to point the DNS (foobar.com) to it.

    I love VS2010s multi-framework targeting feature, yet it has bitten me in the rear-end more than once. The problem is that I have created projects in .NET 3.5 without realizing it, then at some point, when something doesnt work as expected, if Im lucky I discover the mistake.   • How to rollback in EF4?

    In my research about rolling back transactions in EF4, it seems everybody refers to this blog post or offers a similar explanation. In my scenario, I'm wanting to do this in a unit testing scenario where I want to rollback practically everything I do within my unit testing context to keep from updating the data in the database (yeah, we'll increment counters but that's okay). In order to do this, is it best to follow the following plan? Am I missing some concept or anything else major with this (aside from my SetupMyTest and PerformMyTest functions won't really exist that way)? using (var ts = new TransactionScope()) { // Arrange SetupMyTest(context); // Act PerformMyTest(context); var numberOfChanges = context.SaveChanges(false); // if there's an issue, chances are that an exception has been thrown by now. // Assert Assert.IsTrue(numberOfChanges > 0, "Failed to _____"); // transaction will rollback because we do not ever call Complete on it }

  • Random "Not Found" error with Silverlight accessing ASP.NET Web Services

    I'm developing an application with Silverlight 3 and ASP.NET Web Services, which uses Linq to SQL to get data from my SQL Server database. Randomly when the user causes an action to get information from any of my web service methods, Silverlight throws the exception "The remote server returned an error: NotFound.", of type "CommunicationException", with the InnerException status of "System.Net.WebExceptionStatus.UnknownError". Almost 10% of requests gets this error. If the user tries to get the same information again, normally the request has no erros and the user gets the data. When debugging in Visual Studio only Silverlight stops on the exception, and I see no reason for the web service not being found.
