• Dual displays not working with Xinerama in Ubuntu 12.04

  I just upgraded from Ubuntu 10.10 to 12.04. I had been using a display configuration just like the one described at http://bitkickers.blogspot.com/2009/08/rotate-just-one-monitor-with.html without any problems under 10.10. I have an nvidia Quadro FX 380 and have upgraded to the latest drivers (295.49). Everything appears to be fine when the system first boots up. However, after logging in, the left screen goes black, and the right screen displays what should be displayed on the left screen. Logging into Ubuntu 2D somewhat improves things. The left screen correctly displays the left portion of the desktop but the right screen contains a duplicate view of the left screen. Turning off Xinerama and enabling TwinView appears to fix the issues but does not allow the right monitor to be rotated. Since the display problems start to occur only after logging on, I thought it might have to do with carryover user configuration from 10.10 but the problems persist even when logging in as a guest. Clicking on System Settings - Displays results in the error message "Could not get screen information - RANDR extension is not present." Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Cannot boot: FGLRX 8.780 + Kernel 2.6.35-25

  The situation before this all happened is pretty standard. I have a HP Pavillion dv5 laptop with an ATI Mobility Radeon 4200 series. It always worked fine with Ubuntu for as long as I can remember. However, at one point, something happened and truly made a majestic mess of things. It might've been extra repos I enabled with Ubuntu Tweak - I do not know. But something made it so that my system would not boot any longer. And when I say "won't boot", this is what I mean: - Durning a normal bootup, any entries (except Windows) selected with GRUB (or BURG, not even sure which one I'm using anymore) will spawn the Ubuntu loading screen - then try to start X (or GDM) 5 times. The screen goes to dark, black and back to the Ubuntu loading screen. Then it just stays there until I spawn another TTY. I have no idea what is happening or why. There are no errors in my logs, and I'm truly at a loss here. • Video Bug after a fresh installation

  Hello, I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 (I'm brand new to Ubuntu) on my laptop. I seem to have a video bug that I don't know how to deal with. When the log-in screen comes up, the boxes are way off in the corner of the screen (partially off it). When I enter my password, the screen goes black for a few seconds, then returns to the login screen. I can open a Terminal window and enter my login info that way. When I go back to Gnome (Ctrl+Alt+F7 or whatever) it shows me as "logged in" but I still can't get to the desktop. If anyone has any advice, I'd love to hear it--just try to use simple language, please, since I really don't know Linux at all yet! I'm running an Averatec 3700 Series: Mobile AMD Sempron 3000+ 512 MB DDR, 80 GB HDD After looking at this question I tried going in through Failsafe mode (took me a while to figure out the hold-shift-while-booting thing _<) and playing around with the resolution. Setting a somewhat wider resolution did seem to fix things so that I can log into regular GNOME, I think. I'm not sure if this fix will persist, but it seems like it might!

• On installing nvidia drivers on 12.10 I get "Bad return status for module build on kernel: 3.5.0-19-generic (x86_64)"

  New Ubuntu user - just recently made the mistake of trying a different nvidia driver. I'd managed to get the last (nvidia-current) one working through software sources a few weeks ago. The other day I tried to cross over to nvidia-experimental-310 and this produced a system error. Swapping back and forth between proprietary drivers now always causes an error and I can't get any of them to work. Installing through the terminal I get this error message every time: Building initial module for 3.5.0-19-generic Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 3.5.0-19-generic (x86_64) Consult /var/lib/dkms/nvidia-experimental-310/310.14/build/make.log for more information On rebooting, I end up with the crappy screen resolution and the thick black border around the screen. I use gksudo software-properties-gtk to bring up sources, where I can change back to the nouveau driver, which restores my screen. After that I can't find /var/lib/dkms/nvidia-experimental-310/310.14/build/make.log so I can't tell you what's inside. Any ideas what might be preventing the nvidia driver from installing? SOLUTION FOUND Okay - so I have a workaround. This is what has worked: Upgrade to kernel 3.7.0 as detailed here upgrade to latest version of the nvidia drivers as detailed here No idea what was happening with kernel 3.5.0-19, but this seems to be better. A little slower maybe on boot, but after days of messing around it's nice to have something that works.

• LiveCD not booting/can't install Ubuntu 11.04

  So, i got a new laptop somedays ago and as usualy, i went formated it to install Ubuntu. Download 11.04 and burned it on my pendrive using my old laptop (running 11.04). When i tryed to boot from the LiveUSB on my new laptop, it just showed me some weird graphics and if i select any option (can't see what im selecting), it gives me a black screen and that is all. Then i tryed to boot with this LiveUSB on my old laptop, and it worked just fine ._. Burned a CD with Ubuntu 11.04 (64bits) and the problem continue. Then i tought it could be my CD Driver, since the laptop is new and all... burned a Windows 7 64 bits DVD and it worked just fine. Also, if i check the CD/Pendrive inside Windows Seven, all the files there are ok. Anyone have any idea of what can be? I found lots of questions about this, but none of them had the weird menus i'm getting ._. oohh... i also get a "prefix is not set" before the weird menu appears :S My sis specs: Intel Core i5 2400 Intel HD 3000 4gb DDR3 If anyone can help, i will be really greatfull ._.

• SDL_DisplayFormat works, but not SDL_DisplayFormatAlpha

  The following code is intended to display a green square on a black background. It executes, but the green square does not show up. However, if I change SDL_DisplayFormatAlpha to SDL_DisplayFormat the square is rendered correctly. So what don't I understand? It seems to me that I am creating *surface with an alpha mask and I am using SDL_MapRGBA to map my green color, so it would be consistent to use SDL_DisplayFormatAlpha as well. • glTexImage2D not loading my data

  Can anyone suggest why this code doesn't work? When I draw using this texture all I get is black. If I use GLUtils.texImage2D() to load a png file, it works correctly. • Massive 404 attack with non existent URLs. How to prevent this?

  The problem is a whole load of 404 errors, as reported by Google Webmaster Tools, with pages and queries that have never been there. One of them is viewtopic.php, and I've also noticed a scary number of attempts to check if the site is a WordPress site (wp_admin) and for the cPanel login. I block TRACE already, and the server is equipped with some defense against scanning/hacking. However, this doesn't seem to stop. The referrer is, according to Google Webmaster, totally.me. I have looked for a solution to stop this, because it isn't certainly good for the poor real actual users, let alone the SEO concerns. I am using the Perishable Press mini black list (found here), a standard referrer blocker (for porn, herbal, casino sites), and even some software to protect the site (XSS blocking, SQL injection, etc). The server is using other measures as well, so one would assume that the site is safe (hopefully), but it isn't ending. Does anybody else have the same problem, or am I the only one seeing this? Is it what I think, i.e., some sort of attack? Is there a way to fix it, or better, prevent this useless resource waste? EDIT I've never used the question to thank for the answers, and hope this can be done. Thank you all for your insightful replies, which helped me to find my way out of this. I have followed everyone's suggestions and implemented the following: a honeypot a script that listens to suspect urls in the 404 page and sends me an email with user agent/ip, while returning a standard 404 header a script that rewards legitimate users, in the same 404 custom page, in case they end up clicking on one of those urls. In less than 24 hours I have been able to isolate some suspect IPs, all listed in Spamhaus. All the IPs logged so far belong to spam VPS hosting companies. • Unable to start Ubuntu 12.04. The system is running in low-graphics

  I am a newbie to Ubuntu. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 using a USB Stick and it was running all fine for a few weeks and this error popped up. According to one of my friend, the best way was to re-install Ubuntu. Being from a non unix background i thought the same too and after the second install it happened again, but only this time was much quicker, in 3 days. I don't want to re-install Ubuntu every time this happens. I am a complete newbie to Linux which means that i am really bad at using terminal. I know there are other people who fixed this issue using this very same forum, but unfortunately the answers provided are too complex for me to understand. Please let me know how to do this. Things I want to let you know: I would need help step by step if that is alright with you. After i get the error i get the options and i click exit to console login I get the following message in a black screen (which i think is a command line sort of thing): * Stopping save kernel messages [OK] apache2: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name,using 127.0.1.1 for ServerName [OK] * Starting web server apache2 and a blinking cursor. So basically it looks like a dead end for my non unixy eye. And one final thing is before this issue had happened i had tried configuring Python to Apache2. For that i had uninstalled and installed LAMP server several time and edited the configuration files too. I don't know if this really is a concern, but I don't know.. I have a USB with Ubuntu 12.04 in it so i can install it anytime. (But i want to know what the issue is rather than running away) . I migrated to Ubuntu from Windows and i have no plans to go back. • PC always boots into Command Line

  My current Problem is, that when I try to install Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop, neither unity nor gnome are installed. During the installation, I am prompted with the message that only the core is installed, and which additional packages I would like to have installed. When I select ubuntu-desktop, the installer grabs some packages and installs them, but after completing the installation and booting into my Ubuntu, i dont get any GUI, but instead I have the command line interface. When I try to start a new Unity session, i get an error saying that Unity is not installed, so I tried to install it. However this changes nothing, my PC still boots into the Command Line. Are there any solutions to my problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. EDIT: I tried to fix it with the following commands: $ sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop $ sudo apt-get install gdm $ sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start When I try to boot, I get the Ubuntu splash screen, but then the screen mainly shows white squares, with a few black ones at the top.

• Automatic switching between monitor configurations

  I have a laptop and an external monitor and i was wondering if there was a simple approach to switching between multiple monitor configurations based on the detected available displays. For example: When i am at home and i plug in my external monitor i would like this to automatically become enabled and the laptop screen to become disabled. As soon as i pull out the display cable for the external monitor, i would like the laptop screen to automatically become enabled. I was expecting this to just "work" just like it does in windows - but it seems to be much harder than that. I am aware of the xrandr command to turn displays on and off but i cannot seem to find a way to get this to work the way i describe above. I had also found this post about switching between multiple monitor configurations and the results seem a bit inconclusive. However i was hoping that with xrandr there would be a simpler solution. For me, the fact that when i pull out my external monitor the screen just goes black and i get an error message is a big issue holding me back from making the complete switch to linux as i move around alot as a student. My OS of choice is currently Kubuntu 12.04 but i am willing to change to something else if it provides a better way of setting up the described setup.

• How do I upgrade from ubuntu 9.10 to 12.10 on my Acer Aspire 3000

  I had my Acer Aspire 3000 as a dual boot XP/ubuntu 9.10 a couple years ago. I recently blew the dust of it and wanted to upgrade to 7/Ubuntu 12.10 so I began by formatting the Ubuntu side of the partition and apparently damaged the mbr as I could only get black screen with the error message: GRUB loading. error: no such partition grub rescue I then slaved the hdd to my win7 desktop and formatted the entire drive, both sides of the partition then reinstalled it in the Acer and tried to install win7. Upon starting the Acer I got the same error message: GRUB loading. error: no such partition grub rescue I then tried to reinstall Ubuntu 9.10 as I have an Ubuntu produced installation cd. Same result. Next day I received a new battery I had ordered for the Acer. I plugged it and the power supply in and hit the power button just to see if I at least could charge the battery but to my surprise Ubuntu 9.10 began to install, so I let it and it did. Now the hard drive shows 58 gb and 2.5gb partitions neither of which is formatted NTFS for/by windows. I am guessing that the GRUB/mbr was repaired somehow by the Ubuntu reinstallation. My question, should you choose to accept it; How can I get to my goal of dual boot win7/Ubuntu 12.10. I am a beginner and don't know much about linux or the terminology. • How can I restore my Acer Aspire one GNU version 1.98 to factory settings?

  Requires keyring and authentication to install and unistall programs or update anything. I just want to restart from scratch so i can clean it up anyways. Can anyone help? Also, on start up a list on a black screen will come up saying Ubuntu with linux version 26.32-40 generic or recovery version and at the bottom of different versions has one Window 7 loader option. When I get into recovery menu to try and restore to factory settings my netbook has no restore option. I've tried pressing alt-f10 and holding alt and repeatedly tap f10 but nothing seems to work, and my acer asks for a password login to even load windows 7 which I don't have. Any ideas? I've looked a lot on the internet for help but I'm getting to my last resort, to get of this thing for once and for all. I want to be able to personalize and add programs as I please, this is all bs to go through to unistall one freaking game or get rid of ubuntu gnome keyring!! Please help!! Thank you. :)

• Laptop using 14.04 won't get past login GUI

  My laptop was working perfectly yesterday, and now today I can't log in. At first, I was only getting a black screen. However, after following instructions in some questions here on AskUbuntu, I first reinstalled lightdm, and then I had to change the ownership of the file ~/.Xauthority to be my user name. Now, I get the log in GUI screen. However, once I enter my username, it flickers and then comes back to the login GUI. It does not matter if I use Gnome, Unity, or Gnome-Flashback. I don't know why lightdm needed to be reconfigured, or how ~/.Xauthority got changed, but in any case, what is still standing in my way, preventing me from logging in? Update: I have tried deleting the .Xauthority file, and the .profile files in my home directory. It has not changed anything. Logging in as guest also fails to work. The following commands did not work: mv ~/.config ~/.config.BAK mv ~/.cache ~/.cache.BAK Inside .xsession-errors in my home directory, it says: Gdk-CRITICAL: gdk_x11_display_get_xdisplay: assertion 'GDK_IS_DISPLAY (display)' failed

• Can't boot after compiling 3.1 kernel, can only get to terminal

  Long story short: I tried compiling kernel 3.1 on Ubuntu 11.10 at the same time I had an update waiting for a reboot. Computer would boot to a black screen and would hang there. Ended up installing 11.10 on top of old install with a Live CD. Now I had a purple screen on bootup but it would end up booting. Realized Grub was the problem and tried some stuff but nothing worked. I ended up trying to install propriety ATI video drivers and since that nothing has worked, no grub menu(purple screen) and when it boots into the kernel it ends up hanging, I can sometimes get a terminal up with alt-fx. I have tried removing the ati drivers with the ati script, purging my fglrx driver, reconfiguring my xconf.org and following any tutorial I can find about fixing a broken graphics driver, but to no avail. I've gotten to a point were it seems that the ati propriety drivers are correctly loaded but it still has no grub boot menu and won't boot into Ubuntu. I've chased down my logs and this line is from kern.log: unity-greeter[3269]: segfault at 0 ip b7245cbbsp bf9d3900 error 4 in libgio-2.0.so.0.3000.0[b71ad000+142000] That line leads me to believe I don'T have the correct libgio-2 librairy on my system but have no idea how to find out what package has the correct version... My xorg.conf has no errors and seems to imply the fglrxdrm module got loaded correctly. Would be a bit complicated pasting the whole file here but if it would help I'll post it. LAstly, running fglrxinfo give me: Error: Unable yo open display (null) Any help or link to another tutorial would be appreciated. Thanks.

• Can't log-in anymore

  I installed Ubuntu x64 12.04 Desktop LTS on my new laptop three days ago. Of course when I installed it I did an "apt-get upgrade" and a "apt-get update". I modified the .bashrc file to add some aliases but that's about it. Everything went fine I think, but this morning when I tried to connect to my user account, it just simply didn't work. Even when I give the right password, it will send me to a black screen with a few text lines written in white for a second and then back to the log-in screen. When I logged into the guest session, I couldn't shutdown / restart. I tried the "rm /home/MyUsername/.Xauthority" solution after doing a Ctrl + Alt + F1 at the log-in screen. But that didn't work. Does anyone has an idea ? My Ubuntu seems to use Gnome. Thank you a lot in advance ! • 16-bit PNGs in Slick2D

  I'm working on a project and I'm using some 3rd party sprites just to get it off the ground; recently I've come into a hitch. Slick2D doesn't seem to want to load my images. That is, it will warn me that images are the wrong bit-depth. All the images are in 16-bit PNG form (PNG is required for transparency). Is there any way I can disable the warning (being the bad guy programmer (the console print for each individual load REALLY SLOWS DOWN the image)) or is there another solution? I was thinking about converting all images (using imagemagick) to .gif (with an alpha channel). Would there be any loss in quality between formats? EDIT: I tried using imagemagick but some of the sprites use pure black so I can't do that without wrecking the image. EDIT2: using "identify" on any of the images show them as being 8-bit.. but Slick2D won't load them. What the hell? D: EDIT3: Issue solved (ish). If you are googling this then just disable the java png loader from slick by sticking this somewhere in your code (like the main method): System.setProperty("org.newdawn.slick.pngloader", "false");

• Can't Log Into Ubuntu 12.04

  Yesterday, after turning on Ubuntu, I logged into a Gnome session. A few minutes later, I tried switching to Unity for a change. Unfortunately, the background and my desktop icons loaded, but the system bar and launcher failed to load even after several minutes. Unity had always worked fine for me. I then tried the guest account, and it worked fine on both Unity and Gnome. However, the problem with my account got worse; I couldn't log into any desktop at all anymore. I would type in my password and press enter and it would just sit there doing nothing. The computer no longer responded in any way, so I had to hold the power button and reboot. The same problem happened repeatedly. Earlier today, I tried to get on again. I found that I hadthe same problem, when I tried to log in, the computer no longer locked up, but instead flashed a black screen with theconsole output and what seemed to be an error message before returning to the log in screen. It was to quick for me to read, about 1/4-1/2 second. I'd really appreciate some help as I have some important files that are not backed up yet. I can't transfer the files to a new account, or even make a new account because I tried taking the password off my account so now I can't authenticate from the guest to perform root functions. • Can't install on a Thinkpad W700ds

  I want to install Ubuntu on my computer. I don't know much about Linux, but I know my way around a terminal and whatnot. My computer, a ThinkPad W700ds, refuses to read from my CD when booting. The md5sum is correct and the same CD boots fine from another computer. When I try to install from a USB, I can get the main screen, but when I select any of the options from there my screen turns black for more than 3 hours until I have to turn it off. Is there anything I can do about this? I want to have a true partition, don't want a Wubi'd install. It's a 10.10 x64 image, but my computer is 64 bit (running Windows 7 x64 right now) and the exact same CD is bootable on other computers. I've been on #ubuntu IRC for days trying to work this out but nobody knew, so I figured I would get more responses by posting to here. UPDATE: Thanks Jorge Castro. Both the alternate and desktop installers seem to not work at all with the CD. On a USB, the alternate installer lets me start installing, but in the middle of installation I get this message. The people on #ubuntu told me to just exit installation at that point, so I did.

  I didn't have any errors. But When I run my lwjgl game, it gives me a blinking screen. • What to do about "system running in low-graphics mode"?

  My Dell which was 5 years old suddenly karked it and I had the "low graphics" black screen and useless dialogue box. As I believed it was a dead graphics card I went out and bought a brand new machine. I put aside the new machine and tried again in vain to open the Dell. I eventually got to the command line via Ctrl+Alt+F1. I logged into my account from there, and simply started a series of sudo apt-get remove of various softwares that I knew were installed on my PC (software without any great consequence like Google earth, tweak, Skype etc). Lo and behold after a sudo reboot my computer was fine again! So now I have 2 computers. BUT one week after buying the other one and installing 12.04 because I love Ubuntu, the SAME PROBLEM arrived! I once again deleted Google earth, Skype, and did a sudo reboot and everything worked as before. I think there is a bug or something in 12.04 as this problem has never arisen with any other versions of Ubuntu.

• Can't install Ubuntu in Windows 8

  I’ve been trying to install Ubuntu 13.04 64-bit edition on an ASUS (K53Z) laptop. I have Windows 8 64-bit installed in a non UEFI mode (I think since it starts-up with the Windows logo and I don’t have the UEFI settings). This laptop had installed Windows 7 and when I upgraded it I didn’t knew about the UEFI advantages. I tried several times to install Ubuntu from a USB device and it loads the logo and then I can’t go further in the installation. I thought it was the version of Ubuntu and tried to install Fedora (even if I personally prefer Ubuntu). I had the same problem: Fedora’s logo appears and it gets stuck. I tried also to boot from different USB devices and didn’t work either. My Bios has EFI options to boot but they were not enabled. So I tried to enable them to boot the USB in UEFI mode. A menu shows up with the options of install Ubuntu and try Ubuntu. If I click the Install or try option, I get a black screen and I can’t go further with the install (which I think is normal since I don’t have Windows 8 in EFI mode). My hypothesis is that the Bios isn’t letting Ubuntu write or read from my SSD, because the activity LED in the USB memory is on when it’s loading the installation files. Once the files are ready and the Ubuntu logo is loaded I don’t see a LED activity on neither the SSD or the USB. Thanks If I missed data you can ask me.

  I'm running Linux Mint 13 MATE 64-bit. Everything has been working for several weeks. Yesterday, when I tried to boot up my computer, after the BIOS screen flashes I reach a screen with a black background that reads at the top: GNU GRUB version1.99-21ubuntu3.4 Then there is a box in which I can select from the following lines: Linux Mint 13 MATE 64-bit, 3.2.0-31-generic (/dev/sdb2) Linux Mint 13 MATE 64-bit, 3.2.0-31-generic (/dev/sdb2) -- recovery mode Previous Linux versions Memory test (memtest86+) Memory test (memtest86+, serial console 115200) At the bottom it reads: Use the ? and ? keys to select which entry is highlighed. Press enter to boot the selected OS, 'e' to edit the commands before booting or 'c' for a command-line. I have no idea why it started doing this and, worse, I have no idea how to get out of here. No matter which option I select, I can't get it to boot the OS. If I select either of the first two, it reboots to splash the BIOS and then I'm right back where I started. If I choose "Previous Linux versions" I get essentially the same screen with only two choices (which are the same as the first two choices listed above, Linux 13 MATE and the recovery mode). Again, choosing either one of those results in a reboot. If I try to run either of the memtest options, it reads: error: unknown command 'linux16', Press any key to continue... • Generic Pop and Push for List<T>

  Here's a little snippet I use to extend a generic List class to have similar capabilites to the Stack class. The Stack<T> class is great but it lives in its own world under System.Object. Wouldn't it be nice to have a List<T> that could do the same? • how do I fix 12.04 which has crashed after the latest update

  I added a new drive to my system because the old one was full and stopped. I installed 12.04 at the same time, onto the new drive using a flash disk while off line. The system performs fine on 12.04 from the flash disk and it booted from the new drive OK and I was able to recover all my old data. The updater suggested that I update, so I went ahead and did so. At the end of which it wanted to reboot. I went ahead but on reboot I get to the log in prompt and then the whole system crashes. It tries to recover and then performs a bug report during which it tells me that a whole bunch of files are out of date (these would be the new ones I just updated!) and the screen goes black. Game over. I've tried to reboot several times ... same result. I can boot off the flash drive OK. How do I restore the system I had before the update, without over writing all my hard earned recovered data? Or how do I identify the "new updates" that are causing me grief?
