• xubuntu 12.04 screen regularly stops refreshing, refreshing resumes after un-/re-maximizing a window

  My screen frequently stops completely refreshing. I can make it resume refreshing by un-maximizing/re-maximize a window or by switching workspace (the un-/re-maximizing works every time. Switching workspace sometimes has to be done a couple of times). The immediate impression is that the system is frozen: there is apparently no reaction to anything I do but interestingly window title bar will change, if I switch application with (i.e alt+tab or browse through folders) I saw an identical issue in ubuntu 10.04, though a lot less frequent, I never saw this in ubuntu 12.04 (which I have been using the last 4-5 months). After switching to Xubuntu I'm seeing this again and more frequently. The specific reason I'm not sure this is a bug: I installed gnome-control-center which dragged in tons of packages. This was while trying to fix dual-screen setup. I believe the issue surfaced after this. I later meticulously removed every package from this batch (purge) in the hope that every setting would also be removed. But the issue has persisted. Another issue happened at the same time, it may be totally unrelated but it feels as if it is the same basic issue: the screen resolution of the greeter became less than the expected 1680x1050 and often after login there's just a blank and totally unresponsive wallpaper without panel so I have to force reboot. When the login is successful it's very clear that it works hard to determine the correct resolution which is achieved after a few blink to black screens. My questions: 1) Is this a settings issue or a bug? 2) How do I begin to research the issue - could I perhaps some way reset xubuntu/xfce to default. 3) If this is a bug where would be the most appropriate place report this? • Graphical glitches on grub and ubuntu desktop

  I've decided to install ubuntu but neither ubuntu or any other linux distro won't even get to the desktop screen or work after getting there. On windows 8, everything is just fine. my new video card works perfectly and I have no problem with anything about it. then when I try to boot from ubuntu with wubi or with usb everything goes like this: 1) Grub screen...no problem at all, colors are just fine everything looks okay 2) and then linux boot screen...weird background color, over the backround there are vertical stripes of red-orange dots. but on the ubuntu logo and text, there are no dots at all! -I mean its shape is perfect- 3) desktop is about the start but * vertical stripes of red colored dots are all over the unity screen*. then when I click on ubuntu's menu, it usually switches to black screen saying something about "panic occured"...and then it restarts or it gives no respond at all. problems started after putting hd 6570 video card on my asus m5a78lm-lx video card which has amd phenom II X4 processor on it. I've searched to find something but there was no similar question that's why I'm almost sure it is kind of unique. again, I'm writing on Windows 8 right now and everything works and looks perfect. so far I've updated bios and anyone knows anything to solve this?

• Failing Screen Resize Method

  So I want my game to draw to a specific "optimal" size and then be stretched to fit screens that are a different size. I'm using LibGDX and figured that I could just draw everything to a FrameBuffer and then resize that buffer to the appropriate size when drawing it to the actual display. • I installed ubuntu, the installer told me to reboot afterwards. I dd, and now linux wont boot

  Im trying to dual boot between mac 10.6.8 and ubuntu 11.10. I have a macbook pro 8,1. So i installed from a 10.04 disk because the install window makes more sense to me, and it doesnt give me errors or anything. Also, any versions of ubuntu after that dont boot from disk for whatever reason. (i think its having to do with the efi boot thing. i have to get ubuntu 11.10 to boot from a usb with folders bootefiboot.iso) Then my plan after that was after the ubuntu 10.04 install took care of all the swap and stuff for me without being messy, to upgrade to 11.10. So here i have 10.04 booting successfully back and forth from mac osx no problem. I put in my 11.10 usb and the installer gives me the option to "update 10.04 to 11.10" bingo, jackpot, thats what i want. Everything proceeds as normal, as EVERY OTHER install of ubuntu i have ever done, then the installer finishes and says HEY! im finished! Continue testing or reboot now! So i reboot, and what do i get??? A black screen that says the file system isnt found, to enter a boot disk and press any key. WHAT THE HELL????? so i boot the 11.10 installer again from usb, and select "erase 11.10 and install 11.10", installer proceeds normally, and asks me to reboot. I reboot and get the SAME THING. Please, someone, help me get this right here. This is my first time actually dual booting between mac and linux. Usually i just wipe off osx completely and install ubuntu but i actually need to keep my mac partition this time. I have successfully installed 11.10 on this machine before, but that was when i did a clean install. Help?

• What’s ‘default’ for?

  Sometimes there's a need to communicate explicitly that value variable is yet to be "initialized" or in other words - we’ve never changed it from its' default value. Perhaps "initialized" is not the right word since a value type will always have some sort of value (even a nullable one) but it's just that - how do we tell? Of course an 'int' would be 0, an 'enum' would the first defined value of a given enum and so on – we sure can make this kind of check "by hand" but eventually it would get a bit messy. There's a more elegant way with a use of little-known functionality of: 'default'Let’s just say we have a simple Enum: Simple Enum namespace xxx.Common.Domain{    public enum SimpleEnum    {        White = 1,         Black = 2,         Red = 3    }}   In case below we set the value of the enum to ‘White’ which happens to be a first and therefore default value for the enum. So the snippet below will set value of the ‘isDefault’ Boolean to ‘true’. 'True' Case SimpleEnum simpleEnum = SimpleEnum.White;bool isDefault; /* btw this one is 'false' by default */ isDefault = simpleEnum == default(SimpleEnum) ? true : false; /* default value 'white' */   Here we set the value to ‘Red’ and ‘default’ will tell us whether or not this the default value for this enum type. • Another hibernation question

  I installed Ubuntu on my Windows 7 Sager laptop using Wubi. Hibernate (i.e. suspend to disc) is not an option from the power icon, only suspend, shutdown, etc. Hibernate is also not an option from my battery/lid close options. I understand that hibernation is disabled by default in Ubuntu 12.04. I tried running pm-hibernate but I get the following message: Looking for splash system... none s2disk: Snapshotting system and then the computer just hangs with a black screen. According to the documentation here if this fails then I can't enable hibernate but it offers no help in making pm-hibernate succeed. Could swap be my problem? It looks like I have very small swap: user@ubuntu:~$ cat /proc/swaps Filename Type Size Used Priority /host/ubuntu/disks/swap.disk file 262140 0 -1 The advice on SwapFaq is only for the author's set up (e.g. I don't have an Ubuntu install disk since I used Wubi) and he says that 'INFO: This will not work for 12.04, resume from hibernate work differently in 12.04.' Any advice? I really need to get hibernate working to use my laptop as a, er, laptop. Thanks

• Ubuntu won't log in after update

  I just updated Ubuntu about 15 minutes ago on my desktop which is running 12.04. Within the set of updates, there were some kernel upgrades. It didn't say I needed to reboot after the update was finished, but I thought I would anyway. The computer successfully rebooted up to the login screen. However, after entering my password, the screen goes black for a moment, then it comes back to the login screen. I tried the suggestions in this question, but unfortunately they didn't help. In the accepted answer, the questioner vaguely says it was a "Unity problem". I'm using Gnome-classic with full Compiz effects. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Compiz, but that didn't fix anything. So... I can't use my desktop computer until this is fixed. I hope there is some help soon. I've uploaded the output of cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log to Pastebin. A temporary solution of changing to gdm instead of lightdm was found with help in the chat room.

• Halloween: Season for Java Embedded Internet of Spooky Things (IoST) (Part 3)

  So, let's now connect the parts together to make a Java Embedded ghost sensor using a Raspberry Pi. Grab your JFET transistor, LED light, wires, and breadboard and follow the connections on this diagram. The JFET transistor plugs into the breadboard with the flat part facing left. Then, plug in a wire to the same breadboard hole row as the top JFET lead (green in the diagram) and keep it unconnected to act as an antenna. Then, connect a wire (red) from the middle lead of the JFET transistor to Pin 1 on your RPi GPIO header. And, connect another wire (blue) from the lower lead of the JFET transistor to Pin 25 on your RPi GPIO header, then connect another (blue) wire from the lower lead of the JFET transistor to the long end of a common cathode LED, and finally connect the short end of the LED with a wire (black) to Pin 6 (ground) of the RPi GPIO header.   I have rocks orbiting moons, moons orbiting planets, planets orbiting suns, and suns orbiting black holes, and the current system could have many many layers of orbitage. the position of any object is a function of time and relative to the object it orbits. (so far so good). now I want to know for a given 2 objects(A,B), a start time and a speed, how can I work out the when and where to go. I can work out where A and B is given a time. so i just need. 1: direction to travel in from A to B(remember B is moving(not in a straight line)) 2: Time to get to b in a straight line. travel must be in a straight line with the shortest possible distance. as an extension to this question, how will i know if its better to wait, EG is it faster to stay on object A and wait for a hour when the objects may be closer, than to set off from A to B at the start.   I just like to tell you what still is a Problem in Ubuntu 14.04 and should be solved for a nice experience of this distribution. Unfortunately I do not have any hints to tell you, because I am just a user and know not much about programming. Anyway, I hope it helps. 1) Intel open source Graphics issues (proprietary) -when attaching HDMI-cable the screen switches to the external monitor and it's fine, but there is no switching back unless restart with HDMI deattached -black screen appears for like 2 seconds as if I would change screen in the settings; frequency increases with intensity of driver use (i.e. videos or video games) 2) hotkeys (commonly recognised) -there is no possibility to adjust brightness with the hotkeys (Fn+F5 and Fn+F6) 3) touchscreen (commonly recognised) -the touchscreen is behaving like a mouse -configuring gestures for the multi touch screen seems to always end in disabling touch pad gestures 4) panel symbols -battery symbol has got a low accuracy while it determines accurately the energy left; only 5 steps of energy are shown by the symbol Thank you all for participating in the solution of these problems! • Printing Off Center or Images Offset After Upgrade to 14.04 LTS (Brother HL-2240)

  :) I have a very frustrating problem with my Brother HL-2240 under Ubuntu 14.04. Bear in mind this was working perfectly under Ubuntu 13.10. In Firefox, when I print a webpage, all of the images are off center and cut off, this is a big deal for my work. In Google Chrome, when I print a webpage, the page is off center, toward the right margin. In Opera, when I print a webpage, all of the white areas within the margins are black, using a lot of toner. PDF opened in document viewer, prints off center. Steps I have taken to troubleshoot: 1) Playing with the printer settings, resetting to defaults, etc. 2) Un-installing the Brother driver and re-installing (linux-brprinter-installer-2.0.0-1 from the Brother website), which works perfectly in Ubuntu 13.10. I see a similar, un-answered question, here. Hopefully this question provides some additional clarity to the matter. If anyone would like some additional detail because she or he is willing to help, please let me know. I can scan output from the printer to show you. Thank you.

• Run Win7 Guest (raw disk) in Ubuntu (which was installed as Dual Boot on existing Win7)

  I installed Ubuntu 12.10 on top of Win 7 as a dual boot (awesome!). I'm hoping to use VirtualBox to run my original Win7 instance as a guest OS under Ubuntu. I found this existing question and followed the directions to no avail. I can get the VMDK file created but when I run it I just get a blank black screen with no additional information and Windows never loads. I see no HD activity or anything that would indicate it's loading. I used this command to create the VMDK file: VBoxManager internalcommands createrawvmdk -filename ~/.VirtualBox/Win7Native.vmdk -rawdisk /dev/sda3 It looks like everything was created correctly but I just get a blank screen when I run the VM. I do get this warning when I boot the VM: VirtualBox - Warning The virtual machine execution may run into and error condition as described below... The medium '/home/XXX/.VirtualBox/Win7Native.vmdk' has a logical size of 583GB but the file system the medium is located on can only handle up to 16GB in theory. We strongly recommend to put all your virtual disk images and the snapshot folder on a proper file system (e.g. etc3) with a sufficient size. • Unable to create suitable graphics device?

  I've been following the Eye of the Dragon tutorial, which is basicly a guide to making a 2D RPG game, obviously. I recently finished the tutorial about making pop up screens in the menu and changed the screen to load as a full screen. Whenever I try and load the game it just goes black and my mouse sits there. I cannot change out of it other then with CtrlAltDel. Once i do that it says No suitable graphics card found, unable to create graphics device. I read somewhere about XNA not allowing more then one screen when any one of them is full screen. but it wasnt very informative. Anyone have any ideas whats going on and/or how to fix this? • Unable to make sound play in headset

  Top right, I click the sound icon, select sound settings, and connect my USB-headset. I can them see the headset being detected as it pops up in the menu. I click it, and expect the currently played audio to get sent to the headset instead. My problem is that it does not. The audio keeps playing through the built-in speakers. More info: The icon for my built-in card in the sound settings is a circuit with a note symbol on top. The symbol for the headset is just black background with a "No" symbol on it. Might mean it doesn't work somehow. I installed pavucontrol, and notice that no second sound card shows up in there. • Booting Ubuntu 12.04 from external eSATA disk

  This is my system topology: Disk #1 (SATA Internal) C: D: (Windows 7 Ultimate) Disk #2 (SATA Internal) E: (Windows Backup) Disk #3 (eSATA External) H: I: (Other windows data) /dev/sdc3 Linux Swap /dev/sdc4 Extended partition /dev/sdc5 Linux / So, I originally had there Ubuntu 8.1 from years ago but never got to use it. Now I used the Ubuntu 12.04 Live CD to install on that same location (That live CD takes a century to boot on a 6GB Intel i7 system...). The installation went fine, I selected it to install on /dev/sdc5 but it never asked me for any boot stuff, where I wanted to install Grub or whatever it is that it uses nowaways (I come from the LILO days when it always worked :-) So, yet again I can't access my new Linux installation. I have to wait a century to boot the "Live" CD and it allows me to see my new installation but I can't do anything with it. I tried the approach of this blog post. Copied the linux.bin of /dev/sdc5 into C: and used the BCDEdit steps to declare the new OS. So when I boot I see the Windows Boot menu and select Linux and after than I only get a black screen with a blinking cursor on the upper left. I can boot into Windows though. So, perhaps it didn't install the boot code on /dev/sdc5? I used this setup years ago booting from Windows with a BIN file: dd if=/dev/sdc5 of=/mnt/share/C/linux.bin bs=512 count=1 I am very reluctant to run GRUB because years ago I did and it wiped out my Windows boot sector and took quite some effort to recover it and be able to boot Windows again. I have been trying to install GRUB on a blank USB stick but I can't find anything clear enough. My system does NOT have a floppy. So can someone give me some ideas about how to get control of my Ubuntu 12.04 installation?

• Calculating distance from viewer to object in a shader

  Good morning, I'm working through creating the spherical billboards technique outlined in this paper. I'm trying to create a shader that calculates the distance from the camera to all objects in the scene and stores the results in a texture. I keep getting either a completely black or white texture. Here are my questions: I assume the position that's automatically sent to the vertex shader from ogre is in object space? The gpu interpolates the output position from the vertex shader when it sends it to the fragment shader. Does it do the same for my depth calculation or do I need to move that calculation to the fragment shader? Is there a way to debug shaders? I have no errors but I'm not sure I'm getting my parameters passed into the shaders correctly. • Ubuntu 11.10 won't let me login; it kicks me back to login screen

  I was just copying files from my external HDD to my .wine directory, when I noticed the place where the launchers are (Unity desktop) was getting fuzzy and holding onto graphics from the things in the location prior(i have it autohide when a window covers it). I assumed it was just RAM problem, so I canceled the copying, since it wasn't actually important. The glitch remained, and so did another; very slow response time. The mouse moved just fine, but windows were waiting about a minute after I hit the x button to close or even switch active window. Once again, I blamed RAM (only have 2 GBs) so I restarted. Usually, it autologs me into my account, since I'm the only user, but this time it presented me with the login screen. I thought it odd, but tried to log in. A black screen with some text pops up (assuming terminal screen) for half a second then kicks me back to the login screen. I tried the guest account and no luck. I went into terminal (alt+ctrl+f1) and logged in and it worked. I deleted .Xauthority, made new account, and even rebooted quite a few times, all to no avail. Anyone have an idea?

• Are small amounts of functional programming understandable by non-FP people?

  Case: I'm working at a company, writing an application in Python that is handling a lot of data in arrays. I'm the only developer of this program at the moment, but it will probably be used/modified/extended in the future (1-3 years) by some other programmer, at this moment unknown to me. I will probably not be there directly to help then, but maybe give some support via email if I have time for it. So, as a developer who has learned functional programming (Haskell), I tend to solve, for example, filtering like this: filtered = filter(lambda item: included(item.time, dur), measures) The rest of the code is OO, it's just some small cases where I want to solve it like this, because it is much simpler and more beautiful according to me. Question: Is it OK today to write code like this? How does a developer that hasn't written/learned FP react to code like this? Is it readable? Modifiable? Should I write documentation like explaining to a child what the line does? # Filter out the items from measures for which included(item.time, dur) != True I have asked my boss, and he just says "FP is black magic, but if it works and is the most efficient solution, then it's OK to use it." What is your opinion on this? As a non-FP programmer, how do you react to the code? Is the code "googable" so you can understand what it does? I would love feedback on this :) Edit: I marked phant0m's post as answer, because he gives good advice on how to write the code in a more readable way, and still keep the advantages. But I would also like to recommend superM's post because of his viewpoint as a non-FP programmer.

• UDK - How to make sure a PhysicalMaterial mask actually works?

  Hello, I have been reading the documentation for UDK about physical materials and masks. I have my 1bit BMP mask, and the two physical material assets I want to shoot off in the black and white channels. I have applied my material to both a rigid body and to a skeletal mesh and neither apparently uses the mask. If I assign a regular physical material (one that doesn't use a mask) then it will work fine, but this defeats the point because it gives only one hit reaction. In the documentation it states that it is possible to extend a class on which we want to use a physical material based on the KActor class's usage. How to do that? Here is the quote: "The following properties [ie, ImpactEffect - Particle system to spawn at the point of impact + ImpactSound - Sound to play when an impact occurs] allow you to attach sounds and effects to physical collisions. These only work on classes which support them, which at the moment is only KActor. By looking at the implementation in KActor though, you can add this functionality to other classes (or you can subclass KActor)." Essentially, how to make sure a PhysicalMaterial mask actually works? What code could be added to a skeletal mesh class perhaps, to get it going? Any help appreciated.

• What could have caused a large traffic drop from Google in early May?

  I have a website (www.equispot.com) that has been indexed for almost 2 years in Google. I managed to get myself on the first page (average position 6-8) on Google for my target keyword of "horses for sale" and held there pretty solidly for months. Suddenly, with no changes to the site, traffic from Google dropped like a rock in early May. I slowly fell in position until now I'm sitting at the bottom of page 4. I have never hired an SEO firm, have not used any "black hat" techniques that Google would have penalized me for in their May update, etc. I'm not familiar enough with SEO to know how to look at link profiles, etc. to tell if there's something wrong. I've run my site through a DNS checker and it came back with no errors. Google Webmaster Tools shows no messages or notices of any kind, just a drop in traffic. GWT also shows only 2 server errors and 1 404. Is there anyone who can tell me by quickly checking my domain if there's an obvious reason that my traffic would have fallen so far, something that I can fix?

• Ternary and Artificial Intelligence

  Not much of a programmer myself, however I have been thinking about the future of AI. If a fully functional AI is programmed in a binary environment as is used in current computing, would that create a bit of a black and white personality? As in just yes/no, on/off, 1/0? I will use the Skynet computer from the Terminator series as a bad analogy; it is brought online and comes to the conclusion that humanity should just be destroyed so the problem is resolved, basically its only options were; fire the missiles or not. (The films do not really go into what its moves would be after doing such a thing, but that goes into the realms of AI evolution so does not really fit with this question.) It may also have been badly programmed. Now, the human mind has been akin to a ternary system which allows our "out of the box" thinking along with all the other wonderful things our minds can do. So, would it not be more prudent to create a functional ternary system and program an AI using it so the resulting personality would be able to benefit from the third "maybe" (so to speak) option? I understand that in binary there are ways to get around the whole yes/no etc. way of things, however the basic operations are still just 1's and 0's. Again with using the above bad Skynet analogy; if it could have had that third "maybe" option as part of its core system, it may have decided to not launch due to being able to make sense of the intricacies of human nature and the politics of such a move etc. In effect, my question is; Would an AI benefit more from ternary computing as opposed to binary due to the inclusion of -1, or 2, dependent on the system ("maybe," as I call it)?

• Setting console resolution in Ubuntu Server 13.10 within VMware

  I've completed an install of Ubuntu Server 13.10 within VMware and am running into a problem configuring the console (non-graphical) resolution. When I was running Ubuntu Server 13.04, I ran into the same problem... posted the question here, which I later solved by editing /etc/default/grub thus: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="splash vga=789" I then ran sudo update-grub, sudo reboot and 13.04 stuck in a larger-size console mode... just what I wanted. BUT when I run the same commands in 13.10, during the reboot it changes to the new screen-res, BUT the screen stays black and I can't interact with it. I power down the VM, go back to a previous snapshot, and try again... and again. Since the hwinfo package is no longer available, I can't run sudo hwinfo --framebuffer to see what options are available. Ideas anyone? Here are the uncommented settings in my /etc/default/grub file at this moment: GRUB_DEFAULT=0 GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0 GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=false GRUB_TIMEOUT=10 GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="splash" GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="find_preseed=/preseed.cfg" GRUB_DISABLE_LINUX_RECOVERY=false GRUB_GFXMODE=800x600

• Weird Screen while booting to install, while installing and after the install...and then the "panic occured" error

  I've decided to install ubuntu but neither ubuntu or any other linux distro won't even get to the desktop screen or work after getting there. On windows 8, everything is just fine. my new video card works perfectly and I have no problem with anything about it. then when I try to boot from ubuntu with wubi or with usb everything goes like this: 1) Grub screen...no problem at all, colors are just fine everything looks okay 2) and then linux boot screen...weird background color, over the backround there are vertical stripes of red-orange dots. but on the ubuntu logo and text, there are no dots at all! -I mean its shape is perfect- 3) desktop is about the start but * vertical stripes of red colored dots are all over the unity screen*. then when I click on ubuntu's menu, it usually switches to black screen saying something about "panic occured"...and then it restarts or it gives no respond at all. problems started after putting hd 6570 video card on my asus m5a78lm-lx video card which has amd phenom II X4 processor on it. I've searched to find something but there was no similar question that's why I'm almost sure it is kind of unique. again, I'm writing on Windows 8 right now and everything works and looks perfect. so far I've updated bios and anyone knows anything to solve this?
