• Algorithmic trading software safety guards

  I'm working on an automatic trading system. What sorts of safe-guards should I have in place? The main idea I have is to have multiple pieces checking each other. I will have a second independent little process which will also connect to the same trading account and monitor simple things, like ensuring the total net position does not go over a certain limit, or that there are no more than N orders in 10 minutes for example, or more than M positions open simultaneously. You can also check that the actual open positions correspond to what the strategy process thinks it actually holds. As a bonus I could run this checker process on a different machine/network provider. Besides the checks in the main strategy, this will ensure that whatever weird bug occurs, nothing really bad can happen. Any other things I should monitor and be aware of?

  Hello Can child process use the ptrace system call to trace its parent? Os is linux 2.6 Thanks. upd1: I want to trace process1 from "itself". It is impossible, so I do fork and try to do ptrace(process1_pid, PTRACE_ATTACH) from child process. But I can't, there is a strange error, like kernel prohibits child from tracing their parent processes UPD2: such tracing can be prohibited by security policies. Which polices do this? Where is the checking code in the kernel? UPD3: on my embedded linux I have no errors with PEEKDATA, but not with GETREGS: child: getregs parent: -1 errno is 1, strerror is Operation not permitted errno = EPERM

• Waiting on multiple asynchronous calls to complete before continuing

  So, I have a page that loads and through jquery.get makes several requests to populate drop downs with their values. $(function() { LoadCategories($('#Category')); LoadPositions($('#Position')); LoadDepartments($('#Department')); LoadContact(); }; It then calls LoadContact(); Which does another call, and when it returns it populates all the fields on the form. The problem is that often, the dropdowns aren't all populated, and thus, it can't set them to the correct value. What I need to be able to do, is somehow have LoadContact only execute once the other methods are complete and callbacks done executing. But, I don't want to have to put a bunch of flags in the end of the drop down population callbacks, that I then check, and have to have a recursive setTimeout call checking, prior to calling LoadContact(); Is there something in jQuery that allows me to say, "Execute this, when all of these are done."?

• SSIS FTP Task problem with UNIX server

  Hi, I would like to ask if there's a known issue with the FTP Task of SSIS 2005 on UNIX servers(HP UX B.11.23.). As per checking, we were able to ftp files on Windows Server but not on Unix. Though I can browse the ftp path of the UNIX server from my windows exlporer. I can even manually copy files. But when I tried uploading file thru SSIS FTP task, it does'nt work. Please help. • Storing uploaded content on a website

  For the past 5 years, my typical solution for storing uploaded files (images, videos, documents, etc) was to throw everything into an "upload" folder and give it a unique name. I'm looking to refine my methods for storing uploaded content and I'm just wondering what other methods are used / preferred. I've considered storing each item in their own folder (folder name is the Id in the db) so I can preserve the uploaded file name. I've also considered uploading all media to a locked folder, then using a file handler, which you pass the Id of the file you want to download in the querystring, it would then read the file and send the bytes to the user. This is handy for checking access, and restricting bandwidth for users.

When the ESX server with my VMs on it is taxed some of my jobs will stall out stuck in a loop of ssh host authenticity problems. The hosts were in the known hosts file, but during these times the clocks on the slave VMs have drifted far from those of my maven repo. • What are the precise rules/PHP function for encoding strings into POST arrays?

  Greetings, Just getting into PHP web development. I've got an HTML form where a user checks some series of dynamically-generated checkboxes, and submits via POST. On the PHP side, I want to check which of the check-boxes were clicked. I have an array $full_list, and am doing something like $selected_checkboxes = array_filter($full_list, function($item) { array_key_exists($item, $_POST); } I run into problems when a list item is named, for example "Peanut Butter", since in the POST array it is named "Peanut_Butter". I could certainly just str_replace " " with "_" before checking array_key_exists, but I imagine that there is a more fundamental encoding problem here; specifically, I'm not sure of exactly what layer transforms normal strings in HTML Forms (value="Peanut Butter") into "Peanut_Butter". So: what layer is responsible for this conversion? Is it the browser? what are the exact conversion rules, and is there a PHP function out there that will replicate that exact conversion? Thanks!

  Hi All, I want to enable Access for assistive devices in System Preferences programmatically. But Problem is that my application is not running as root user and i do not want my application to be as root user and also should not ask for any authentication in between. I want to tap all keyboard events globally. I am using CGEventTapCreate() for the same.In the documentation of CGEventTapCreate() API it is mentioned that, Event taps receive key up and key down events if one of the following conditions is true: The current process is running as the root user. Access for assistive devices is enabled. In Mac OS X v10.4 & later, you can enable this feature using System Preferences, Universal Access panel, Keyboard view. I tried manually by checking the Enable Access for assistive devices from System Preference and it gives me expected output. So is there any way to do the same via program without asking for authentication and also application is not running as root user? Thanks, Dheeraj.

• Redundancy algorithm for reading noisy bitstream

  I'm reading a lossy bit stream and I need a way to recover as much usable data as possible. There can be 1's in place of 0's and 0's in palce of 1's, but accuracy is probably over 80%. A bonus would be if the algorithm could compensate for missing/too many bits as well. The source I'm reading from is analogue with noise (microphone via FFT), and the read timing could vary depending on computer speed. I remember reading about algorithms used in CD-ROM's doing this in 3? layers, so I'm guessing using several layers is a good option.   Hi, In my .NET application I am subscribing to events from another class. The subscription is conditional. I am subscribing to events when the control is visible and de-subscribing it when it become invisible. However in some conditions I do not want to de-subscribe the event even if the control is not visible as I want the result of an operation which is happening on background thread . Is there any way through which I can determine if a that class has already subscribed to that event. I know we can do it in the class which will raise that event by checking event with null but I don not know how to do it in a class which will subscribe to that event.

  Hi, I am trying to compile Webkit on Ubuntu 8.04. But when i run autogen.sh, I get the following error saying it needs a newer version of glib. So what is the safest way to install glib without screwing up the rest of my OS (since the rest needs 2.16 while webkit compile needs 2.21)? checking for GLIB... configure: error: Package requirements (glib-2.0 >= 2.21.3 gobject-2.0 >= 2.0 gthread-2.0 >= 2.0) were not met: Requested 'glib-2.0 >= 2.21.3' but version of GLib is 2.16.6 Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you installed software in a non-standard prefix. • question about select() and range of for loop to read sockets

  Just a quick question about using select(). I'm using select() to read from multiple sockets. When I looked up examples on how to use select(), a lot of tutorials showed going through for loops and checking for FD_ISSET. The problem I have with those tutorials is that the for loop starts from i = 0. and checks if the bit has been set for the file descriptor i using FD_ISSET. Couldn't the for loop start from say your minfd (just like how you would keep track of maxfd)?? Or am I missing something?? Following link is an example of such for loop (look at the fourth example that he gives) http://www.developerweb.net/forum/showthread.php?t=2933 If that was the only example out there that used such for loop, I might understand it was a mistake or bad coding but I've seen several examples of such for loop of uselessly going through literally thousands of sockets and I'm convinced I'm missing something. • How do I host a Google gadget? How does it work?

  I just spent 5 hours by checking Google gadgets websites and FAQs, but I still have no idea how to host a gadget. What I've figured from reading the Google documentation: I can write gadgets with XML, JavaScript etc.. Gadgets can be added to iGoogle etc.. Google can host the gadgets for you. Gadgets can be hosted anywhere else??? All of the above information doesn't answer my question. For instance, with jQuery or Dojo Toolkit, I can download the JavaScript framework and use it. With Google gadgets, I can not find a download link for a framework. Why? Does Google provide its framework? If not, why does the documentation indicate that gadgets can be hosted anywhere? I am totally confused. A brief explanation or some helpful links are very welcome! Thanks a lot!!!

• Cannot pull newly-added top-level directory into sparsely-checked out SVN repository

  Our SVN repository is quite large, and pulling the whole thing takes some time. When checking out at home, I was pleased to discover the sparse checkout feature; I checked out the whole repository to a depth of 1, then pulled each top-level directory (directly under the trunk) that I needed to a depth of infinity. Until now this has been brilliant. Recently I added a new directory under trunk. When I do a svn up, I get nothing. The TLD I added will not sync. I normally use Tortoise SVN, so I tried doing this from command line. I tried explicitly specifying the name of the directory, adding --depth infinity, adding --force. None of these tricks has worked. What am I missing?

• What is the difference between File and FileInfo in C# ?

  I've been reading that the static methods of the File Class are better used to perform small and few tasks on a file like checking to see if it exists and that we should use an instance of the FileInfo Class if we are going to perform many operations on a specific file. I understand this and can simply use it that way blindly but I would like to know why is there a difference ? What is it about the way they work that make them suitable for different situations ? What is the point of having this 2 different classes that seem do the same in different ways ? It would be helpful if someone could answer at least one of this questions.

  We are using ankhsvn to check in our .net code, however I have two issues with our setup that I want to resolve. 1\ I thought a key reason to have a tool like svn is that you can rollback to an earlier version of your codebase. If developers are just checking in code, then how can you get version 1.1 (say the current production build), out of subversion? 2\ In VS you have the concept of solutions, many solutions might use the same project. How do I make sure when a developer checks out a solution, they get the appropriate versions of the projects that belong to that solution?

• Trying to parse xml, but xmldocument.loadxml() is trying to download?

  I have a string input that i do not know whether or not is valid xml. I think the simplest aprroach is to wrap new XmlDocument().LoadXml(strINPUT); In a try/catch. The problem im facing is, sometimes strINPUT is an html file, if the header of this file contains <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC ""-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"" ""http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd""> <html xml:lang=""en-GB"" xmlns=""http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"" lang=""en-GB""> ...like many do, it actually tries to make a connection to the w3.org url, which i really dont want it doing. Anyone know if its possible to just parse the string without trying to be clever and checking external urls? Failing that is there an alternative to xmldocument?

  Project layout: /project_a /shared /project_b /shared /shared project_a and project_b both need to contain the shared folder. With svn, we used svn:externalsand that worked fine, since svn can reference subdirs (with relative paths too). However, we moved to git and it seems to not support checking out subdirs. Our solution now is to put project_a, project_b and shared all in different git repos, and use git submodules in project_a and project_b. However this seems much more complicated than one monolithic svn repo with svn:externals. What's the correct way to handle common elements in git?
