• Why does a hard disk suddenly look to Windows as if it "needs to be formatted"?

  This is more of a theory question, but what are the reason(s) for a disk to suddenly cause Windows to start saying it "needs to be formatted"? It happens to an IDE disk that I have in a cheap external enclosure, and I can usually get most of the data back by using software like recuva. It's now happened to an internal disk I have. I'm not looking for software to fix this (although links would be appreciated), but rather a low-level explanation as to what gets corrupted on the disk.

• Linux RAID: Replacing Failed Drive...permanantly

  Okay, odd question here. I have a server with RAID 5. A drive failed, in a really physically in a really odd way. On the machine it boots and is seen by the BIOS but...no partition can be seen on the drive consistantly (in and out). 2 out of 3 drives working...I made new spare disk and added it, RAID 5 rebuilt clean. All appears well but...when I reboot it keeps trying to use the 2nd drive which doesn't give any partition data, so of course the RAID 5 gets 2 out of 3...again. The status of my drive is as follows: /dev/sda2:Good /dev/sdb2 (drive has physical problem so no partition data) bad, /dev/sdc2:good /dev/sdd2:good. Every time I reboot the mdadm system seems to keep trying to use /dev/sdb which has physical failure (although spins and is detected). /dev/sdd is the new drive I created. I added /dev/sdd to the raid and it rebuilds the raid but this action isn't memorized upon reboot so it keeps listing /dev/sda and /dev/sdc but doesn't use the perfectly good /dev/sdd until I re-add manually. I've tried removing the dead drive with the mdadm tool, but as it cannot see /dev/sdb paritions it will not fail or remove it (says partition doesn't exist). the /etc/mdadm.conf was automatically made on the original OS install which only lists: DEVICE partitions MAILADDR root ARRAY /dev/md2 super-minor=2 ARRAY /dev/md0 super-minor=0 ARRAY /dev/md1 super-minor=1 Basically just the raids to use on boot. I need to remove this semi-dead drive (/dev/sdb) but I'd prefer to know why this is happening before I do. any ideas or suggestions. I supposed I could attempt to clone/replace /dev/sdb (the partitions on drive show up, then disappear shortly after) but given the partition "chester cat" behaviour this seems risky to me and as I have a working "spare" it seems unnecessary.   I have this application that lists files in a WindowsForms listbox (NET framework). The application does not support the copy operation if multiple files are selected in the listbox, but at the same time, the application supports 'drag and drop' event for multiple files (allows dragging the files 'out of the application'). How can I extract the paths of the files 'dragged out of the application'? (i.e. I drop the files on some program / script that shows me the paths / saves the paths to a txt file).

• [Outlook 2007] How to recover the deleted Tasks from a Deleted Profile?

  Edit: OK. I've found the OST with the tasks in it, but I am unable to import an OST into outlook, it appears it needs to be converted to PST first. Is there anyone who knows a free OST - PST converter or some way to import OSTs directly into outlook? I am using outlook 2007 linked to an MSN email account through outlook connector. I recently added [email protected] (Fake address) to my outlook and deleted [email protected]. I thought my tasks were locally stored seperately from the email address, but it turns out when I deleted [email protected], I also lost all of my tasks. This is catastrophic. Is there any way to recover them? They're not stored on the MSN web account. I figure they must still be somewhere on my computer. I just don't know where to look or how to look there. Thank you.

• How best to handle end user notification in the event of system failure incl. email?

  I've been asked to research ways of handling end user notifications when systems such as email are experiencing problems. Perhaps an example will make this a little clearer. We have a number of sites in different countries. Recently email was impacted at one of the sites, but it could have been a complete network outage. Information was provided by phone to local IT managers at the site but onward communication was slower than some would have liked. It seems like almost everyone at the site has a personal mobile phone which could receive text messages, and perhaps access a remote website with postings on the situation. However managing and supporting a system to text people on these relatively infrequent occasions would be very costly to do internally. What are other people doing to handle situations like this? Some things I've thought of include: Database of phone numbers to text. Seems costly and not very easy to maintain for an already stretched IT group. Is there an external service that would let you do this policies? Send voicemail message to all phones on site. Maintain an external website. This would not work in all situations (network failure), and there is a limit on the amount of info that can be posted externally. A site outage could be sensitive information in some situations. How could the site be password protected? Maybe OpenId/Facebook connect would work. Use a site like Yammer.com which is publicly accessible but only by people with a company email address. Anyone using this for IT outage notifications? To me it looks like there is no clear answer, and that there are solutions for some subsets of users. To be comprehensive a number of solutions would need to be combined. Any additional thoughts or recommendations? What worked or didn't work for your organization?

• Best alternatives to recover lost directories in FAT32 external hard drive?

  I have an 320 GB ADATA CH91 external hard drive. I guess it has some problems with the connector of the USB jack. The point is that in certain occasions it fails in write operations generating data losses. Right now I lost a directory with several GB's of very useful information. Since then I have not attempted to write to the disk any more. What tool would you recommend to recover the lost data? The disk is FAT32 formatted (only one partition) and I use both Linux and Windows. What filesystem format would you recommend to avoid future data losses? I currently only use this external hard drive in Linux so there are several available choices (FAT, NTFS, ext3, ext4, reiser, etc.).

• How to recover data from a partially overwritten partition

  By mistake, I configured a 900GB partition to be part of a 50GB raid. The sync is complete and my understanding is that only the first 50GB of the bigger partition is overwritten. How do I recover the rest of the data? When I try to mount this partition by identifying it as ext3, it mounts only the 50GB overwritten space. This partition was earlier divided into various logical volumes(all ext3 filesystems) through LVM. Any suggestions?

• Is there a good, free way to fix broken/corrupt .wmv files?

  I've recovered some files from an hdd that weren't supposed to be deleted in the first place, but they have seeking problems/crash the players. Since they have the right size, I'm thinking it might be a problem of corrupt index/header, so I'm trying to find a way to fix them. It's easy to find examples on how to fix corrupt .avi files with mencoder, but .wmv seems trickier. Also, I realize there might not be a way to fix these files, but I figure I might as well as try. As far as players go, I've tried opening it with vlc/mplayer/windows media player. I can use anything on Windows XP/7 and Ubuntu, as long as it's free. Since the files are 200mb+ and there are quite a few, I don't think trial software would work.

  What is the safest (without additional writing to the disk) way to power down computer whose deleted files you want to recover in order to boot from rescue medium? In case of a desktop computer, plugging off the power cord looks like the most direct solution, but are there possible side-effects, apart from losing unsaved data? More problematic seems the laptop, with removing the battery being the equivalent, but is it a good idea overall?

• Help in recovering partition

  Okay so i had one NTFS partition and i wanted to resize it, but while resizing it with partition magic some error occurred and now i am not able to enter in my partition anymore. I have slackware 13 also and i tried mounting the partition from there but it didn't succeed. One friend of mine came to my house with some live-cd os called backtrack3 and when he booted from cd, he was able to mount the damaged partition - and was able to read/write on it anywhere. I saw my files, they are all there, so nothing's erased just the partition is somehow damaged. But strange thing was that from backtrack we weren't able to mount some of the working partitions of my comp, and we could mount the damaged one. So i am asking for some help here: My files are all there, and i saw them from backtrack. What can i do to fix the partition so it would be usable from windows/slackware again ? Please tell me anything you've got because i have some important data on it. Thank you.

• 'No volume found' on Windows 7 VM (VHD), can I get anything back?

  The worst possible situation... Despite my vigilence doing backups, and trying to keep my PC secure, one of my VMs disk seems to be wiped out. Using the VHD tool from R1Soft (HyperV VHD Explorer), when I attach the VHD, it says no volumes found so it looks like something wiped out the VHD (which it still its original size). It seems that something has sneaked through whatever security I have/had and has wreaked havoc. Can I recover anything from this?

What I would like to do is to execute this script for every user every time they login. I found many articles talking about the execution of batch files on startup but I would like to know how to do the same on each login.   Possible Duplicate: Chrome: where is the location to save browse temporary files Ok, so here's what happened - and yes, it was pretty stupid by me: I wrote up and submitted a post on Stack Overflow It was not suited to be placed on Stack Overflow as someone pointed out to me, so I deleted the post (this was a few hours ago) I copied the text into a new question page on Super User, but didn't submit it yet I accidentally just refreshed the webpage that had the text, and the question has now been deleted from Stack Overflow I have Lazarus installed, however the Chrome version doesn't have many features and the text was not recoverable from there. I do not have a clipboard manager, but the text was copied to my clipboard - so is there any way to get this back (Windows 7)? Although the post on Stack Overflow was deleted, I suppose it would have existed in my cache - could I recover it from there? Would the post on Stack Overflow exist in an rss feed anywhere? Many thanks, and I hope I can find this - and I am sure that the solution will prove valuable for me (and others) in the not too distant future once again.

• Unable to connect to SQL Database (can the password be reset)

  I have recently joined a company which has an SQL 2005 Server running a few databases. The server looks like no one has touched it in a couple of years and has this week it ran out of disk space. After a quick hard drive scan it looks like some of the databases have become a little bloated and particularly the Sharepoint_config~*~_log and WSS_Content_log.ldf have grown to about 15GB. I have been able to log into a couple of the other databases and use the shrinkfile command to free up disk space but for some reason I am unable to log into the sharepoint and Microsoft#SSEE databases (which gives me the "cannot connect to Sharepoint, a network related or instance specific error occurred..." when I try and connect) I can see that the database is running via the SQL surface configuration and I have made sure that the remote connection settings allow me to connect locally but I am still unable to log in either with windows authentication or locally. Is there any way to reset or recover the database login details so I can get in? ( I have tried logging in with all the administrative passwords I can find and after tracking down the company who installed it in the first place I found out that they have no idea what the password could have been)

  Hi. Here is my problem. I have OpenSuse installed alongside Windows 7. Grub is the boot loader from where I access OpenSuse and Windows 7. I want to delete Grub and also the OpenSuse partitions. My first, failed, approach was to insert the Win7 DVD, choose Repair your computer and then enter the commmand prompt. I then typed "bootrec /fixmbr" and restarted. It didn't worked. Grub was still there, so was Windows7. I then tried using "bootrec /fixboot and /rebuildbcd and neither worked. So what can I do to fix this? I remember when I was using WinXP this was much simpler. I would just type fixmbr and that was it. Any clues? Thank you.

  I executed the following command from a Ubuntu live cd terminal (dont ask why). dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb2 bs=512 count=1 Where sdb2 is a NTFS partition (third partition) on a disk. Suffice to say it is now messed up. When I boot into windows 7, it does show me E drive but when I click on it it asks me to format it. I am not ever sure what I did, did I mess up partition table or only the MFT? Is there any way to get the data back PLEASE HELP! this is very important :(

• Recovering data from a Silicon Image SiI3114 RAID

  I have a set of 3 disks in RAID 5 originally created with a Silicon Image SiI3114 on-board RAID controller. The old motherboard is dead. The new motherboard (which has a different raid controller) won't boot from the array. I have no reason to believe that the drives are damaged or corrupted. I'm 99% sure that the problem is that the new controller isn't compatible or I'm not setting it up properly. Is it possible to recover data from the drives using a different controller? Would a PCI card like this one allow me to read from the array again?

I like the idea of dropbox - we have been using it for small remote sharing. If we buy the upgrade account, and move 30 to 70 gigs of files to it, will every user have to have the pro account?   Hello. I have a 500 GB hard drive with one NTFS-partition on it. I can mount it with Ubuntu and view the contents. But when I try to copy something, I get an I/O error. Ok, I tried to make its image with dd. I/O error as soon as it starts. I have installed ddrescue, but its manual page says not to use it with drives, failing on I/O. Can I manage to get some information from this drive and how to do this?

• Ubuntu loading stops ?

  I don't know why, or how... but my ubuntu's loading / booting stops right after the ubuntu logo appearing.. An underscore appears in the right top of the screen: _ then, it disappears leaving the whole screen black Version is 9.10 ,Kernel is .20 I have tryed recovering mode and selected recover damaged packages option, but it didn't do any good.. I have very important files in Ubuntu that I need to copy to a pen drive or something, today.. The terminal mode is working, so i think i can do this there.. My questions: How can I get my Ubuntu to load? Is it possible to copy the files i need via terminal mode? I dont know if with other of the previous kernels it would work... but I had configured my grub (inside Ubuntu's gui) to show only the last kernel... and now i can't select any other kernel then .20 because I don't know a way to configure Grub unless via Ubuntu's gui... My hardware: ATI Mobility Radeon 4650 HD P7450 2.13Ghz Core duo 4Gb DDR2
