  • How to open a text file that's not in the same folder?

    Since C it's not a language I am used to program with, I don't know how to do this. I have a project folder where I have all the .c and .h files and a conf folder under which there is a config.txt file to read. How can I open that?   • How do I deny access to everybody but me in Windows 7?

    I am trying to set up a file server on my my Windows 7 Pro system at home. I set up one common "Share" folder that I have shared/published. Within the share folder I want to have individual folders for me and my wife...that is only I can read/write my folder and only my wife can read/write to her folder and neither of us can read the contents of the other person's folder. Then I want to have a "public" folder where we can both read/write to contents of the folder as well as any sub-folders created, but my "kids" account can only read from this folder and sub folders. It seems really confusing to set up something like this and it really shouldn't. I am really confused between the "allow", "deny", and dimmed check boxes in the security tab. It seems that if I "Deny" access to "Everyone" on my private folder, then I don't even have access to it. Windows security seems backwards from the rest of the world's security models. If I am in two groups and I deny access to one of the groups but allow access to the other group then Windows security denies me access as I am in one of the groups that has access disallowed. Very confusing.

  • Strange corruption saving from Textpad 5 within Windows 7-64 VirtualBox VM to shared folder with Mac host

    I have a fairly new Window-7 64bit install running in Virtual Box on a MacBook Pro. I'm using TextPad 5 within that environment to edit source files that live on a shared folder that is on the Mac Host. When I save some of these source files, the saved file ends up with some amount of the end of the file repeated one or more times. For example, a file that has this at the end: ... return ttp; }; would, once saved, open up with: ... return ttp; }; }; It is definitely a problem with how the file gets written as opposed to how it's read, because I can see this now matter what app I use to open the file with (NotePad & Word in Windows 7, TextWrangler back in the Mac). I've tried saving as ANSI and UTF-8, and with or without the 'Write Unicode and UTF-8 BOM' checked in TextPad preferences. It doesn't happen with all files though I can't see any pattern about which files do or don't have the problem. It doesn't happen with files written to the Windows 7 c:\ drive. And so far it doesn't happen from other applications saving files, only TextPad. Any ideas? My versions: Textpad 5.4.2 Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, fully up to date VirtualBox 4.0.8 r71778 OSX 10.6.7

  • Is there a quick way of undoing a folder change in Far Manager?

    I love Far Manager. However, it has a feature to quickly go to the root directory of a drive with Ctrl+\. I do sometimes need and use this feature, but more frequently I use Ctrl+? to quickly insert the file name under the cursor into the command line. As it so happens, the ? key is located dangerously close to \ which is why I sometimes erroneously go the root directory (which then is doubly unfortunate since I originally wanted to work with a file in the directory I was in). Now I could probably just redefine Ctrl+\ to do nothing, although I still sometimes need that (can be replicated with a quick cd\, though). But Windows Explorer, in the wake of the WWW, provided us with a handy directory history and two separate ways of navigating backwards: backwards through the history and backwards through the hierarchy. Is there something quick and easy to get back to the folder I were in? This is less of an issue in C:\Users\Me (still nagging) but more so in deeper hierarchies.

  • Limit the amount of data that can be stored in a folder on Ubuntu Server 12.04?

    I'm in the process of building my first server. It's up, it's running, I'm transferring copious amounts of data away from my horrid little Drobo (DO NOT BUY ONE OF THESE, EVER). However, there's one thing I have yet to do: I'd like to set it up for Time Machine backups as well. I've seen all the guides and I have some idea of how to set the whole thing up, but the issue is that Time Machine will just fill up as much space as you let it. So if I let it lose in my 8 TB zpool it'll slowly consume every last available sector. This, of course, is not acceptable. I have a folder at the root of my zpool called "ZFS Time Machine" and I would like to limit it to 1 TB (all I need for backup purposes). However, I have no idea how to do that. Is this possible? I can continue using a small external hard drive attached via FW800 if I have to but I'd much rather prefer putting everything on my server.

    Background: When used as an IMAP client against Gmail, Thunderbird 3 (may be the case in v2 also, not sure) will refresh it's list of folders (the folders correspond to Gmail labels) when you do "Download/Sync Now..." or restart the Thunderbird client. Any new folders (labels) created in Gmail will sync to the client and any folders moved/changed/deleted folders in Gmail will move/change/delete on the client as well. (Note: Thunderbird has the concept of "subscribing" to IMAP folders (assumingly allowing you to determine which folders you want, rather than bringing all of them down and dragging loads of data across the wire). When used against Gmail, Thunderbird appears to automatically subscribe to all folders (including when folders are newly created in Gmail), so this might be why the refresh is happening properly.) This behavior is what I want with Exchange. When using Thunderbird with Exchange (2007), the folder list doesn't refresh when folders are added/changed/deleted on the server and/or from a different mail client. When I look at the subscription options, some are checked and some are not (not sure why Thunderbird picked some and not others). And when I add new folders on the server and/or from another client, they never even appear in Thunderbird's list of folders, preventing me from subscribing to them.

    After finding an amusing picture on a popular imageboard, I decided to save it. A few days past and I was browsing my images folder when I realised that the thumbnail generated by Windows XP in the thumbnails view did not match the actual image. Here is a comparison image: What's even stranger in this situation is that the parts of the photograph that are different have actually been replaced with what might be the correct background. Furthermore, it is a jpeg (no PNG transparency tricks) that is 343 kilobytes but only 847x847 pixels wide. What could be going on here? Could there be anything malicious in the works, or hidden data? Before anyone asks, I have checked and preformed the following: Deleted Thumbs.db to reload thumbnails. Opened image in different editors. (they appear with the text) Moved image to a different directory. Changed the extension to .rar. All these steps produce the same results. Pre actual posting update: It seems that opening the image in paint, changing the image entirely (deleting entire contents and making a red fill) will still generate the original thumbnail, even after deleting Thumbs.db etc. I'm also hesitant to post the original data, in case there is something malicious or hidden that could be potentially illegal. (Although it would be very beneficial to see if it works on other computers and not just my own).

    So I followed the "Chroot and Debian" tutorial in http://sublimation.org/scponly/wiki/index.php/FAQ Then when I log into user "upload" via ssh I have no access to the command line (this is what I wanted). But then when I SFTP into the upload user I can still see all the root files (/), it didn't chroot me to just /home/upload whats going on? …. I added this to the end of my /etc/ssh/sshd_config file, then done a restart Subsystem sftp internal-sftp UsePAM yes Match User upload ChrootDirectory /home/upload AllowTCPForwarding no X11Forwarding no ForceCommand internal-sftp Then when I log into sftp I can only see my upload folder (this is what I want), but now scp doesn't work :P SCP will accept my password then: debug1: Next authentication method: password [email protected]'s password: debug1: Authentication succeeded (password). debug1: channel 0: new [client-session] debug1: Requesting [email protected] debug1: Entering interactive session. debug1: Sending environment. debug1: Sending env LANG = en_NZ.UTF-8 debug1: Sending command: scp -v -t /test It will hang on that last debug message.     Does replacing chrome User Data with my own - works without leaving any trace behind? Where else chrome writes data outside of User Data folder? I used to start office work by removing chrome User Data, replacing it with my own User Data copied from my external drive, saving the original User Data to other folder. Before leaving in the evening, I will take back my own User Data, and bring back the original User Data where it is originally saved. Is this process advisable? Would I be safe this way or if not, where else does chrome save data outside of User Data folder in AppData? Also, how is the process in Mozilla Firefox?

    I have a client who runs a small business with 4 desktop systems, two of which are inexpensive [ The XP Pro system is currently being used as a file "server" for time sheets and QuickBooks data. It also shares an HP ink jet printer. The client wishes to decommission this system because (1) it's ugly [it is] and (2) it uses too much power [it does]. If we share a folder on one of the Windows 7 Home Premium systems will there be a problem connecting to it with up to 3 other computers? What about the printer sharing? I vaguely remember seeing that Windows 7 is less usable for "server" purposes and has severe restrictions on the number of clients. But I cannot seem to find those numbers. In my own network (over 12 systems) we have no problem sharing from Windows 7 Ultimate to a few other systems where needed. I am embarrassed that I cannot seem to find the answer to this in a couple of days of searching. I can do an anytime upgrade of one of these systems to Pro if that would improve the ability to share from it. I am not able to convince the client to put a "real server" into their network.

Thanks Im looking for an app that will let me automatically sync a usb drive with a folder on my home system over the internet. I would like to roam from computer to computer and run this syncing app from the usb drive. Im looking for the same functionally as DropBox but without the 2gb restriction and without the need to fully install. Two Way sync between a usb drive and pc over the net Utilizes the full size of the usb drive not limited by an online storage size. (I dont need online backup or versioning) Allows the removal of the usb drive, Plugging it in to another computer will resume its sync. While the drive is connected the app should run silently keeping changed files in sync. (I dont want to run a manual process other than simply starting the app) Must be able to run as a portable app from the usb drive but can fully install on home pc. Window 7 Support is preferable. Please let me know if such and awesome app exists. TIA!

  • Annotation Processor for Superclass Sensitive Actions

    Someone creating superclass sensitive actions should need to specify only the following things: The condition under which the popup menu item should be available, i.e., the condition under which the action is relevant. And, for superclass sensitive actions, the condition is the name of a superclass. I.e., if I'm creating an action that should only be invokable if the class implements "org.openide.windows.TopComponent",  then that fully qualified name is the condition. The position in the list of Java class popup menus where the new menu item should be found, relative to the existing menu items. The display name. The path to the action folder where the new action is registered in the Central Registry. The code that should be executed when the action is invoked. In other words, the code for the enablement (which, in this case, means the visibility of the popup menu item when you right-click on the Java class) should be handled generically, under the hood, and not every time all over again in each action that needs this special kind of enablement.   • C#/.NET Little Wonders: Comparer&lt;T&gt;.Default

    I’ve been working with a wonderful team on a major release where I work, which has had the side-effect of occupying most of my spare time preparing, testing, and monitoring.  However, I do have this Little Wonder tidbit to offer today. Introduction The IComparable<T> interface is great for implementing a natural order for a data type.  It’s a very simple interface with a single method: 1: public interface IComparer<in T> 2: { 3: // Compare two instances of same type. 4: int Compare(T x, T y); 5: }  So what do we expect for the integer return value?  It’s a pseudo-relative measure of the ordering of x and y, which returns an integer value in much the same way C++ returns an integer result from the strcmp() c-style string comparison function: If x == y, returns 0. If x > y, returns > 0 (often +1, but not guaranteed) If x < y, returns < 0 (often –1, but not guaranteed) Notice that the comparison operator used to evaluate against zero should be the same comparison operator you’d use as the comparison operator between x and y.  That is, if you want to see if x > y you’d see if the result > 0. The Problem: Comparing With null Can Be Messy This gets tricky though when you have null arguments.  According to the MSDN, a null value should be considered equal to a null value, and a null value should be less than a non-null value.  So taking this into account we’d expect this instead: If x == y (or both null), return 0. If x > y (or y only is null), return > 0. If x < y (or x only is null), return < 0. But here’s the problem – if x is null, what happens when we attempt to call CompareTo() off of x? 1: // what happens if x is null? 2: x.CompareTo(y); It’s pretty obvious we’ll get a NullReferenceException here.  Now, we could guard against this before calling CompareTo(): 1: int result; 2:  3: // first check to see if lhs is null. 4: if (x == null) 5: { 6: // if lhs null, check rhs to decide on return value. 7: if (y == null) 8: { 9: result = 0; 10: } 11: else 12: { 13: result = -1; 14: } 15: } 16: else 17: { 18: // CompareTo() should handle a null y correctly and return > 0 if so. 19: result = x.CompareTo(y); 20: } Of course, we could shorten this with the ternary operator (?:), but even then it’s ugly repetitive code: 1: int result = (x == null) 2: ? ((y == null) ? 0 : -1) 3: : x.CompareTo(y); Fortunately, the null issues can be cleaned up by drafting in an external Comparer.  The Soltuion: Comparer<T>.Default You can always develop your own instance of IComparer<T> for the job of comparing two items of the same type.  The nice thing about a IComparer is its is independent of the things you are comparing, so this makes it great for comparing in an alternative order to the natural order of items, or when one or both of the items may be null. 1: public class NullableIntComparer : IComparer<int?> 2: { 3: public int Compare(int? x, int? y) 4: { 5: return (x == null) 6: ? ((y == null) ? 0 : -1) 7: : x.Value.CompareTo(y); 8: } 9: }  Now, if you want a custom sort -- especially on large-grained objects with different possible sort fields -- this is the best option you have.  But if you just want to take advantage of the natural ordering of the type, there is an easier way.  If the type you want to compare already implements IComparable<T> or if the type is System.Nullable<T> where T implements IComparable, there is a class in the System.Collections.Generic namespace called Comparer<T> which exposes a property called Default that will create a singleton that represents the default comparer for items of that type.  For example: 1: // compares integers 2: var intComparer = Comparer<int>.Default; 3:  4: // compares DateTime values 5: var dateTimeComparer = Comparer<DateTime>.Default; 6:  7: // compares nullable doubles using the null rules! 8: var nullableDoubleComparer = Comparer<double?>.Default;  This helps you avoid having to remember the messy null logic and makes it to compare objects where you don’t know if one or more of the values is null. This works especially well when creating say an IComparer<T> implementation for a large-grained class that may or may not contain a field.  For example, let’s say you want to create a sorting comparer for a stock open price, but if the market the stock is trading in hasn’t opened yet, the open price will be null.  We could handle this (assuming a reasonable Quote definition) like: 1: public class Quote 2: { 3: // the opening price of the symbol quoted 4: public double? The end goal is to have the whole works triggered by the business, and IT only looking in when there's an error reported. The interim phase is going to be semi-manual. That is a level 2 tech inputs the user's info and supervises the process. The current hurdle I'm facing is user profile archiving. Our security team requires us to archive the profile directories for any terminated user for 60 days in case the legal team requires access to their files. Our AD is as much a mess as everything else, so there are some users with home directories and some with profiles. Anyone who has a profile dir in AD also has a good deal of their profile redirected to our file servers over DFS. In order to complete the process manually you find the user in AD, disable them, find their home/profile dir, go there and take ownership, create an archive folder, move all their files over, then delete the old dir. Some users have many many gigs of nonsense and this can take quite some time. Even automated the process would not be a quick one. I'm thinking that I need to have a client side C# GUI for the quick stuff and some server side batch script or console app to offload this long running process. I have a batch script that works decently using takeown and robocopy, but I wonder if a C# console app would do a better job. So, my question at long last is, what do you think is the best way to handle this? I can't imagine this is a unique problem, how do other admins get this done? The last place I worked was easily 10x larger than the place I'm in now. If we would have been doing this manual crap there, they'd have needed a team of at least 30 full time workers to keep up. I have decent skills in C#.net and batch scripting, but am a quick study and I have used most every language once or twice.     Hi all, I use the following standard folder structure with my projects: workspace myproject conf development.properties production.properties src build.xml build.properties build myproject Unfortunately, working with scripted languages nullifies the concept of separating the "workspace" from the "build". In my development environment, I use a virtual-host for each project. The virtual-host for a project is configured during the "deploytodevelopment" ANT task. Which method would you recommend for integrating PHP into my build process? Change the virtual-hosts setup to point to the workspace/myproject/src folder. Edit the PHP in the workspace/myproject/src folder. or Check out another working copy of the myproject/src folder to the build/myproject folder.   • Relative paths in C#

    I need some help with paths please! Basically I have a project with the following folder structure: Project (root directory which contains the .sln file etc.) Project/MyProj (contains the code) Project/MyProjTest (the test folder) Project/TestResults Now with this Project I need to have a common folder where I can stick a bunch of files for use with the Application without having to copy the files to multiple locations etc. What is the best way to do this? Ideally I would like to have the folder as Project/ResourcesFolder, so that both the Code folder and Test folder can access it. Now if this is the case how do I call this folder from within C#? I've tried Application.StartupPath, Environment.GetCurrentDirectory but they both just return the CURRENT folder which is not what I want. Thanks in advance.
