• Will adding top level directories with similar structure to existing directories change the SEO of my site?

  I've been pointed this way for SEO related questions and this one has had me pondering for a little while now. I'm recreating a site's structure. The website's content is generated through several feeds and unless I want to place each and every - of the 10,000 odd - venues into their own category manually, I can't avoid categorising each item by using its address. The current the structure looks like this Homepage > region > county > city/town > venue page and the URL looks like domain/region/county/city/venue/ I'm relatively happy to use this structure as it's not too convoluted. However we also promote deals and we also group the venues into their respective franchise, so that leads to URLs such as: domain/groups AND domain/deals My question is: how would the directory structure look with these new additions? Would I have a URL that looks like domain/deals/region/county/city/venue or domain/group/region/county/city/venue and just put a 301 or a canonical link tag on the page to prevent the duplicate pages competing with each other? Am I just worrying about it needlessly and perhaps link straight from domain/deals to the venue page URL domain/region/county/city/venue, this bothers me a bit though as the deals and groups will not be in the breadcrumbs.

• Slideshows in elastic or fluid layouts?

  Hi folks, I'm building a new WordPress TwentyTen child theme using the ElastiCSS framework ( http://elasticss.com/ ) and am trying to figure out the best way of using some sort of dynamic content slideshow. What is the best way to implement a slideshow in a fluid or elastic layout such that it remains proportional to the other items in the content area? Should I even bother trying to obtain that? Or should I use like four different sizes in conjunction with something like the Less framework ( http://lessframework.com/ )? Thanks! • Three apps going through apache. How to configure apache httpd? [migrated]

  I have a quick question but I've been struggling to find the best solution: I have two java webapps and wordpress (php) that I need to serve through my Prod website: App #1 should be accessed when pointing to www.example.com/ (this would have other url too such as "www.example.com/book") App #2 should be accessed when pointing to www.example.com/manage Finally WordPress would be accessed at www.example.com/info How can I configure apache to serve all these three instances at the same time? So far I have and it's not quite working right. Any suggestions would be much appreciated! • Google not indexing new forum

  We installed a new forum a few months ago now. The URL is: https://www.scirra.com/forum I've 301'd the old topics/threads, as well as included all the new URLs in the sitemap. Yet they still are not appearing. Webmaster tools is showing: 139,512 URLs submitted 50,544 URLs indexed And has been stuck there for quite some time. • Is PhotoBucket a viable solution to host a website's photo galleries

  I'm currently working with a lot of photographers and will probably be picking up development on a professional photography site soon. With that in mind, and I can't stop thinking about a way I can implement a user-friendly photo gallery hosting solution where the site owner can upload images themselves without any webmaster intervention. Kind of like a CMS for image hosting. The idea is: - The user can log in to PhotoBucket - Upload their gallery - Visit an admin section of the site - Enter the new gallery name to the listing And... Voila, the gallery automagically gets displayed on the website in a clean lightbox-style presentation format (ie, no iframe nonsense). I took a brief look at the API and it looks promising. Is this a viable solution? Bonus points if you have implemented something like this with Photobucket and/or another 3rd-party image hosting site. Note: Purchasing a premium account is expected if necessary. The limitations on free accounts at most image hosting sites are just too restrictive to be useful.

  The clients on my VPS are all getting spammed. The spam seemingly comes from their own email addresses - it is clear that somehow something got into my VPS and was able to capture all the email addresses that existed and is now using them to send spam. I was advised to set up a SPF record, but I am unsure what this is or how to go about it. After reading, I have figured out how to create one in CPanel, but I cannot find what to do with it now. Do I copy it into somewhere in my DNS records in Zone Management? Can anyone point me in the right direction?

  The Technology website Ars Technica has adjusted their URL rewrite rules to end with a .ars. Traditionally, sites have taken advantage of this URL rewriting capability to completely eliminate file suffixes like .html, .php, .aspx etc, under the theory that this made for better SEO (since the content of the URL was more relevant to the content) Ars Technicas, though, look like this: http://arstechnica.com/science/news/2011/03/flow-from-the-poles-drive-sunspot-levels.ars So, is Ars Technica adding the .ars file suffix purely a vanity play? Or is it an SEO trick to improve the site's SEO by cleverly inserting their site name into every URL slug? And, if this is indeed an effective SEO trick, should other sites follow suit?

  I have a web site who's home page is at http://domain.com when a new user first hits the web site I'm creating a unique id of 5 chars for them (for example 'abcde' and redirecting them to http://domain.com/abcde so they can later bookmark and return to their workspace. My question is what's the best approach for SEO purposes, I need the main url domain.com to be indexed but google will also get the redirect and will not index the main page. I know about canonical urls, but this applies only when the domain.com url does not redirect also should I use 301 or 302 code in the redirect ?

• In-page Google Analytics giving no page views recorded

  I am trying to use Google In-Page Analytics. The rest of Google Analytics seems to work correctly on my site, but when I go to the new In-page analytics, I get no click appearing. I just get an error saying "There are no pageviews recorded for this page. Try adjusting the date range or select an alternate page." To the left in the content details it tells the number of page views. Do I need to setup something special for In-Page anayltics to work?

  Ok this is somenthing unbelievable, we have a website, users sign up and receives links to confirm they signed up BUT: 1 - microsoft blocked our IP (no one with microsoft email account can receive our emails) 2 - we tryed contacting microsoft submitting the detailed form about our problem 3 - we posted 3 times in their community about our problem 4 - we tweeted they about our problem 5 - we tryed finding out some telephone support number (the few there are arent' helping at all) Do you think we solved? the answer is NO :/ We still unable to send emails from our IP to microsoft email accounts, since 3 months back. Our emails are perfect we checked all the email headers following microsoft guidelines but it seems not enought, checking our IP reputation it seems everythings ok, indeed we can send email easly to any other provider , gmail, yahoo, etc Do you know any other way to try to get help ? • js includes for html seo-friendly

  I need to do client-side includes on a website for the navigation. The problem is the navigation is currently all html, and since I can't use php i've just been using js to include the html with document.write (). however, i read that this is not good for seo. While i know there are seo-friendly js navigation menus, I was wondering if there's a way to do this while including the html and not having to alter it very much? I also got it to work using embed with html which i know is super hacky but i don't really know that much about js and am frustrated being told not to use server side includes. thanks!!

• How web server choose between unicode and utf-8 for accentued characters?

  I have a web server with my ISP which replaces in the urls the accentued characters by their unicode values: for instance é (eacute) is translated to %e9 (dec 233). For testing I use locally Easyphp which translate those characters by their utf-8 equivalence: é is then replaced by the well known sequence %c3%a9 (é)... Browsers served by Easyphp don't decode unicode values but they do if running locally (utf-8 and non converted accent also)... I have been unable to find where this behavior is configured in the server. This is a problem as some urls are built by my application using the php rawurlencode() which seems to always encode with unicode values on both servers. Any idea? Thanks in advance.

• Managing user privileges, best practices [on hold]

  I'm am new to web development. I'm creating a website where different user can have different privileges, such as creating/editing/deleting a news, or adding/editing/deleting whatever kind of content on the website. I started by creating a "user type" that would indicate the user's privileges (such as "user", "newser", "moderator", "admin", and so on), but I quickly started noticing issues that made me think that this might be a naive approach to this issue. What if I want to give a regular user the right to edit a news (for whatever reason)? Then the user would be half "user", half "newser". But the system I use can only handle one user-type. So what would be the best practice here? I was thinking of removing the concept of roles (or "user-types" such as newser) and only have the concept of "privilege", where every user could have zero to many privileges. So, to re-use the above example, if I wanted a user to have the right to edit some news, I would only have to give him a "edit news" privilege. Is this the way to go?

  We have like 30 websites with almost no traffic (<~10 visits / day) which are currently hosted on a dedicated server. We are evaluating hosting on Amazon EC2 however I'm not sure how to do that properly. One (micro) instance per website is too expensive ~10 websites on one instance (using apache virtual hosts) make auto scaling impossible (or at least difficult) Or is cloud computing not suitable for such a usecase?

• Problem with user generated content

  In general, what do you think is better in regards to adding content to a site, to allow users to add content to the site and put a flag button to report it if it doesn't fit with the site, or should only I add the content and remove that option? It will be a small site but I don't know if I'll manage to scan the site constantly or deal with the flags and on the other hand I'm worried that the site wont move forward because there will be lot less content, thoughts?

However in an attempt to have everything hosted in AWS, we will have some sites that we do want to be interlinked. If the sites resided on the same subnet, this could be bad. However, with AWS, we can allocate multiple elastic IP addresses that do reside on different subnets. How does Google deal with this?
