• Proper response for a REST insert - full new record, or just the record id value?

  I'm building a REST API which allows inserts (POST, not idempotent) and updates (PUT, idempotent) requests to add/update database to our application. I'm wondering if there are any standards or best practices regarding what data we send back to the client in the response for a POST (insert) operation. We need to send back at least a record ID value (e.g. your new record is record #1234). Should we respond with the full object? (e.g. essentially the same response they'd get back from a "GET /object_type/1234" request) Should we respond with only the new ID value? (e.g. "{ id: 1234 }", which means that if they want to fetch the whole record they need to do an additional HTTP GET request to grab the full record) A redirect header pointing them to the URL for the full object? Something else entirely?

• How do I stop Ubuntu from hanging due to processes going into 'disk sleep'?

  I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 64 bit on an AMD. It regularly hangs for a few minutes at a time when some of the processes's CPU usage % goes into 'disk sleep'. During that time I can't start new programs and most of the programs on the desktop become unresponsive. I would rather it didn't hang and my applications remained reliably responsive. Why does this happen and how can I stop it?

  I have a windows service that needs to run with High Priority. I still get the "access denied" message when trying to change the priority. Any ideas what permission I need to do that?

I surmised it was because it needs to be started as root. I know you can make a startup script some how, but I'm not sure how to do it. • How to prevent these executables from starting up?

  After removing the following executables from starting up, in the near future they reappear again: DDMService.exe: Re-enabled when visiting a DivX video online. DivXUpdate.exe: Re-enabled when visiting a DivX video online. GoogleUpdate.exe: Re-enabled task, I think by Google Chrome? I see no auto-update option. iPodService.exe: Re-enables after starting iTunes. iTunesHelper.exe: Re-enables after starting iTunes, useless on SSDs. Reader_sl.exe: Re-enables when updating Adobe Reader, useless on SSDs. It bores me that these processes keep popping back up, while my software functions well without them. I'm smart enough to update the software weekly through FileHippo so I don't need automatic updates. What can I do to never see these processes again? Even after reinstallation of those applications... A general solution is also welcome! :-)

• Server freeze restarted quickly so how do I fiond what went wrong?

  I have a SQL SERVER DB running on a windows server 2008 (VMWare) Yesterday I could not RDP to it so I ended some RDP sessions which were left logged in. This seemed to solve the problem. However last night I learned that the DB was inaccessible and unresponsive to customers. My colleague checked the server but again is unable to create an RDP connection. He then restarted the server and since it has been fine. Looking at the CPU Readings of the Server it spiked up to 100% before the original RDP problem .After I ended the extra seeions uit again dropped down to normal levels however before the time of the customer complaint it had rose to 100% again - before it had to be restarted. Is there anyway I can investigate which processes may have caused the problem in the first place. Would there be some kind of memory dump from when it was restarted. I would prefer to find out what is wrong now instead of waiting until it happens again.

  I am trying to troubleshoot a problem. Some very helpful information would lead me to a solution is: Often does Linux check the /etc/localtime file? Additionally if there is a configuration file to increase the frequency (for testing) that would be helpful. Normally I would assume that it would check when a call to the ntp server has been executed, but NTP is not installed. It couldn't possibly check every time the date function is called as this would result in many problems on busy web servers. Server is Ubuntu 12.04, but I don't think that is relevant to the question.

I need to be able to capture the stdout, stderr, and exit code of the process, and I need to be able to see if a process exceeds it's allotted execution time. Everything is working correctly if $time = -1 (no timeout is needed), but the system thinks that kill 0, $pid is always 1. This makes my loop run for the entirety of the time allowed. Some extra details just for clarity: This is being run on Windows. I know my process does terminate because I have get all the expected output.   I am trying to diagnose this exception. "System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80070008): Not enough storage is available to process this command. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070008) at System.Runtime.Remoting.RemotingServices.AllocateUninitializedObject(RuntimeType objectType) at System.Runtime.Remoting.RemotingServices.AllocateUninitializedObject(Type objectType) at System.Runtime.Remoting.Activation.ActivationServices.CreateInstance(Type serverType) at System.Runtime.Remoting.Activation.ActivationServices.IsCurrentContextOK(Type serverType, Object[] props, Boolean bNewObj) at Oracle.DataAccess.Client.CThreadPool..ctor() at Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleCommand.set_CommandTimeout(Int32 value) ... It does not look like any of the normal types of "storage" have hit any limits. The application is using about 400MB of memory, 70 threads, 2000 handles and the hard drive has many GB free. The machine is running Windows 2003 Enterprise server with 16GB of RAM so memory shouldn't be an issue. The application is running as a windows service so there are no GDI objects being used. Running out of GDI handles is a common cause of this exception. Database connections, commands & readers are all all wrapped with using blocks so they should be getting cleaned up correctly.

• Windows services with windows forms in the same process

  Hello, I have a c# application that runs as a windows service controlling socket connections and other things. Also, there is another windows forms application to control and configure this service (systray with start, stop, show form with configuration parameters). I'm using .net remoting to do the IPC and that was fine, but now I want to show some real traffic and other reports and remoting will not meet my performance requirements. So I want to combine both applications in one. Here is the problem: When I started the form from the windows service, nothing happened. Googling around I've found that I have to right click the service, go to Log on and check the "Allow service to interact with desktop" option. Since I don't want to ask my users to do that, I got some code googling again to set this option in the user's regedit during installation time. The problem is that even setting this option, it doesn't work. I have to open the Log On options of the service (it is checked), uncheck and check again. So, how to solve that? How is the best way to have a windows service with a systray control in the same process, available to any user logging in? UPDATE: Thanks for the comments so far, guys. I agree it is better to use IPC and I know that it is bad to mix windows services and user interfaces. Even though, I want to know how to do that.

  I've seen this question and this article on how to debug a native Java crash. The article is with respect to Windows. What are the equivalent debugging aids on Linux? Note: All I have is this crash log from a user in the field. I do not have access to the machine on which the crash occurred. Update: I am pretty sure the crash is due to JNI code we have. I never meant to imply that it was the JVM itself that was faulty. • Long running stats process - thoughts on language choice?

  I am on a LAMP stack for a website I am managing. There is a need to roll up usage statistics (a variety of things related to our desktop product), and I initially tackled the problem with PHP (being that I had a bunch of classes to work with the data already). All worked well on my dev box which was using 5.3 Long story short, 5.1 memory management seems to suck a lot worse, and I've had to do a lot of fooling to get the long term roll up scripts to run in a fixed memory space. Our server guys are unwilling to upgrade php at this time. I've since moved my dev server back to 5.1 so I don't run into this problem again... For mining of mysql databases to roll up statistics for different periods and resolutions, potentially running a process that does this all the time in the future (as opposed to on a cron schedule), what language choice do you recommend? I was looking at python (I know it more or less), java (don't know it that well), sticking it out with php (know it quite well). Thanks for any suggestions. Josh
