• SNMP from the browser

  There"s this idea of having a web app search for devices in the network (with elevated user permissions, of course). Checking the silverlight and flash APIs, there does not seem to be a way to do SNMP ( the UDP APIs are limited to multicasting media ). Anyone know a clever workaround? In windows, a small XBAP utility can do the SNMP stuff, but that leaves out the Mac OS X platform. Thanks for any ideas. ( I do have a SO account but I"m in a not so trustworthy public PC right now so I didn"t log in. )

• How to stop ReSharper from showing error on a lambda expression where Action is expected?

  In Silverlight, System.Windows.Threading's Dispatcher.BeginInvoke() takes an Action<T> or a delegate to invoke. .NET allows me to pass just the lambda expression. but ReSharper sees it as an error, saying "Cannot resolve method 'BeginInvoke(lambda expression)'": Dispatcher.BeginInvoke(() => { DoSomething(); }) The error goes away if I explicitly create the Action around the expression like this: Dispatcher.BeginInvoke(new Action<object>(o => { DoSomething(); })); I prefer the least amount of code in this case for the best readability. Is there a way to disable this specific ReSharper error notification? I tried some of the options, but could not find it. Thanks, Carl

• PropertyChanged doesn't work properly

  Hello, I have a Silverlight application in which I implemented MVVM pattern. In my application there is a child window on which I have ComboBox. I bound ItemsSource and SelectedItem of my combobox to a property (typeof ObservableCollection) and property of MyType appropriately. MyType is a "MODEL" derived from INotifyPropertyChanged. When my window is loaded I set values to this properties. But my combobox doesn't display selected item. I found that when I set property which is bound to selected item (in ViewModel), the PropertyChanged event is null. Can anyone help me. Thanks.

• Does a WCF service with basicHttpBinding create a new connection for each request?

  I have a Silverlight client calling a WCF Service on an IIS web server. It uses the default basicHttpBinding setting for the calls. My client code has the usual Visual Studio generated proxy that is generated when using the 'Update Service Reference' menu option. Does every call to the service using that proxy use the same connection? Or does it create a connection each time a call is made and then close it down once the reply is received? As the client is actually making a SOAP call over HTTP I just assumed that every service request had a new connection created but I want to check if that is the case? (I need to know because if it creates a new connection each time then each request could end up at a different server because there are several servers being load balanced. It is uses a single connection for the duration of the proxy then I can assume they all end up at the same machine and so it would cache state.)

  Hi, I have hosted my Silverlight application in IIS, now when I try to access the application I get the following error System.ServiceModel.CommunicationException: an error occured while trying to make request to URI This could be due to attempting to access a service in a cross-domain way without proper cross-domain policy in place, or policy that is unsuitable for SOAP services..... • application authentication design ideas

  Hello I am working with on an app that uses wpf / silverlight on the front end and nhibernate on the back end, and looking for some design ideas to address authentication; I was looking at Rhino Security which I think is pretty slick and certainly useful, but doesn't in and of itself seem to address authentication. That said, I am looking for something of a technology agnostic overview of authentication design issues at this point. Does anyone have any links and / or experiences with an authentication design that is relatively easy to adapt to different common technologies. Cheers, Berryl

• Grabbing values from Expression.Blend.SampleData

  I am trying to figure out how to grab a value from Expression.Blend.SampleData. If my id is equal to a drop down for example, I can grab it by doing this: ((Expression.Blend.SampleData.MyDatabase.something)(MyDropDown.SelectedItem)).description; I need some way to place my own value where (MyDropDown.SelectedItem) is. Visual studio wants me to convert it a "Expression.Blend.SampleData.MyDatabase.something" format. I have tried a few ways to do this but I have been unsuccessful. Any Ideas? EDIT I am starting to think there is no way in Silverlight to do this

• Portable way to determining of printer is physical or virtual

  I need direct-to-printer functionality for my website, with the ability to distinguish a physical printer from a virtual printer (file). Coupons.com has this functionality via a native binary which must be installed by the user. I'd prefer to avoid that. SmartSource.com does it via Java applet: Does anybody know how this is done? I dug through that Java APIs a bit, and don't see anything that would let you determine physical vs virtual, except looking at the name (that seems prone to misidentification). It would be nice to be able to do it in Java, because I already know how to write Java applets. Failing that, is there a way to do this in Flash or Silverlight? Thanks in advance. That time problem was resolved himself (without any actions from my side, with Visual Studio restart). At the moment, I had the same problem on another PC (Vista x64, VS2008, Silverlight 3.0, RIA Services Toolkit): ThomasDomainContext class that inherits DomainContext was not visible from the page's codebehind file. Again, it was resolved after VS restart and after that I got another problem: Error 1 'VfmElita.Web.ClientBin.ThomasDomainContext' does not contain a definition for 'employee' and no extension method 'employee' accepting a first argument of type 'VfmElita.Web.ClientBin.ThomasDomainContext' could be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) D:\Project\Budda\VFMElita\VfmElitaSilverlightClient\MainPage.xaml.cs for the following lines of code (error is noticed for the 31st line): 30: var context = new ThomasDomainContext(); 31: grid1.ItemsSource = context.employee; 32: context.Load(context.GetEmployeeQuery()); Any help is welcome.   First I need to state that I am not the developer so I will state the issue in business terms but please respond with a technical solution as I will be passing on your posts to the developer. We are building a web based application in SilverLight and WPF that consists of communication between a customer service rep and a customer. The application will inlcude a webcam that will provide the customer with the ability to see the customer service rep and the rep will also be able to see an image of themselves but will not be able to see the customer. Similar functionality to a live web chat with video component. There could potentially be bandwidth issues and we do not want the customer to have to download anything. Any recommendations on how to do this?

  Hi! I am having a hard time on this one, I have a folder over the network with public access (no credential restriction). I am trying to do a File.Exist or Directory.Exist and I keep on having a exception. Can someone tell me the good way to do IO over the network. EDIT 1 FOR DETAILS: if i do execture = \agoodip\Public\test.txt I get the file etc etc In my code it look like a basic Directory.Exist(@"\\agoodip\Public") or File.exist(@"\\agoodip\Public\test.txt") The exception I get is Path not found. EDIT 2 : I am using Silverlight 3, Is there any security pattern to be aware of to lookup file on the network? Thanks!

  I'm working on a tutorial to build a media player in Silverlight and am trying to wire up an EventHandler to the timer.Tick event of a DispatchTimer object so that the time of the video is synced with a Slider object. The sample code is in C# and I can't for the life of me figure out the proper syntax in VB.NET with RaiseEvent and/or Handles to wire up the event. Below is the relevant C# code. • Expand in linq not loading inner data collections from service.

  I am seeing odd behavior with service queries! I am using MVVM pattern for a silverlight 3 app on 3.5 framework and Dataservices 1.5. The following code eager loads correctly the parent object and the child heirarchy perfectly IF and ONLY IF I am preloading the data. But I would like to fetch a different set of the parent object (and its child heirarchy) on different button clicks. What I am seeing is that on button click, only the parent object is retrieved, and the child heirarchy contains nothing. Any suggestions? Any ideas how to tackle this? Thanks all.   Hi all, I have a Silverlight 4 Business Project where I have enabled the ASP.NET Authentication/Authorization role information. I would like to pass the currently authenticated user's account information from the app.xaml.cs codebehind to a different XAML page, but I have no idea how that is done, or if it's even possible. My goal is to databind the IsEnabled property of various buttons of my target XAML page, based on whether the current user is in a particular admin related role or not. The Application_UserLoaded event handler of app.xaml.cs seems to be the safest event handler to initiate this task because it fires only after the user's account information is loaded from the server. • RIA Services - Two entity models share an entity name

  I have two entity models hooked up to two different databases. However, the two databases both have a table named 'brand', for example. As such, there is a naming conflict in my models. Now, I've been able to add a namespace to each model, via Custom Tool Namespace in the model's properties, but the generated code in my Silverlight project will try to use both namespaces, and come up with this, Imports MyProject.ModelA Imports MyProject.ModelB Public ReadOnly Property brands() As EntitySet(Of brand) Get Return MyBase.EntityContainer.GetEntitySet(Of brand) End Get End Property giving me this exception: 'Error 1 'brand' is ambiguous, imported from the namespaces or types 'MyProject.ModelA,MyProject.ModelB'. Has anyone had experience with naming conflicts like this using RIA services? How did you solve it?

  Can anyone speak to the ease of dividing work amongst multiple developers when designing and building a medium- to large-complexity Silverlight or WPF application? My team is finding it difficult to cleanly split work when you've got, for example, a number of controls that provide different visualizations of a Model/ViewModel that's fairly complex and has a lot of properties and methods for interacting with data. It seems like a very big portion of the work ends up being the design and build of the Model/ViewModel, and much less inside each of the controls, which are naturally what are easy to ration out to multiple people.

• Best way to bind node collection to itemscontrol in Silverilght

  I have a Silverlight project where the main objects are just a bunch of nodes that are joined to each other. A parent node can have many children. I want to be able to bind the nodes to an itemscontrol or similar and so was wondering how to best structure the parent child relationship. Is it OK to create a flat top level list of all nodes (List allNodes) and add each node to that, binding the list to the itemscontrol, then on top of that add each node to it's parent's 'childnodes' list to establish the structure - or am I doing some kind of ugly doubling up? Just hoping there is some kind of best practice or pattern I can latch on to Thanks

• Xap file contents changes if built in Visual Studio or build server

  I'm using MEF with my Silverlight 4 app to dynamically load xap files. To optimize this process, I've removed various assemblies from my xaps since I know they've already been loaded by the base xap. This reduces the size of my dynamically loaded xaps. I accomplished this by setting the "Copy Local" flag for each assembly reference to "false". This all seems to work fine when I build in Visual Studio 2010 - my xaps are much smaller. However, when the same projects are built by the build server, all the excluded references are once again in the xap file hence tripling the size of the xap. I've read several blogs/articles regarding similar experiences but no resolution. Very frustrating - any help is appreciated.

• Ria Services loading foreign keys with Linq-to-SQL

  I have a database that consists of 5 tables : Course, Category, Location, CourseCategories, and CourseLocations. The last 2 tables just contain the two foreign keys. A Course has many-to-many relationships with both category and location. I am trying to load the data into a Silverlight app using Ria Services. My DB model is Linq-to-SQL. I have tried adding the [Include] attribute to the metadata classes and I have added the DataLoadOptions so it should load the all tables when you ask for a Course. However on the client side I am never getting back any entries in the CourseCategories and CourseLocations properties. What else needs to be done to get the foreign key relationships to exist across the serialization.

• Preventing concurrent data modification in Web based app

  Hi, I am building a web app in Silverlight which allows users to view and edit a database. In order to prevent multiple users from editing the same data, I was thinking of implementing a lock and key mechanism, so that other users are made to wait when one particular user is editing the data. Is there any way in which we can have variable(flag specifying if a user is editing data) in the server which can be shared across multiple clients? Is there a better way to manage this type of conurrent data access issues?
